The man paced the length of the room, moving from edge to edge like a pendulum. His wife redialed the number and waited for the person on the other end to pick the call.

“Hello?”, the caller said.

“Aminu, it’s me, Chief Oduah.”, Mr. Jason said grinding his pacing to a halt.

“Ah, Chief good afternoon.”, he replied.

“Aminu, what is good about the afternoon? I ask you. I thought we had an agreement.”, the older man barked.

“Chief, calm down…”, the man pacified.

“Calm down? Aminu, it’s the lives of my grandchildren and you’re telling me to calm down? I thought I explained everything to you. You promised me that Justice Musa would preside over the custody case. How on God’s green earth did Justice Mustapha get the case file?”

“Chief…”

“Don’t 'Chief' me. You know how to begged me to use my influence with the NUJ to get you appointed as Chief Registrar. Now, I ask you for a small favor pertaining to my grandchildren, you cannot perform. Aminu, my grandchildren are in peril because of your incompetence. If anything happens to them, you can forget about working in a Sharia Court.”, Mr. Oduah promised.

“Chief, don’t threaten me o. Do not threaten me. I …” Mr Oduah grabbed the phone from the table and hung up. He looked at his worried wife and continued pacing.

“Jason, what do we do? The children are not safe with Tinu’s friend. If they were able to get pictures of them in school then they can hurt them.”, his wife whined. “I thought at least that Dele guy would get custody. But… Jason what do we do?”

“Bridget, I am thinking here. I…” His phone vibrated with a text. His wife picked it up and read it before handing the phone over to him. “Who is in coma?”

The man read the message and smiled, “The new stupid, driver we hired hit someone. The guy fell into a coma. Thank God he’s awake now.”

Tinu trailed Ireti's hands closely as they worked to weave a table mat. Tinu looked at her attempt and didn’t know where to begin from. She groaned and Ireti laughed.

“It takes practice. Loose it and when I’m done I’ll help you start.”, Ireti said. Tinu smiled and loosed the mat. She watched the other women weave their wares with dexterity. She turned to the other table and saw other women knitting and crocheting with skill as they gossiped. She sighed and grabbed a newspaper from the centre of the table and opened it. She flipped through the pages and found nothing new. She dropped it back and decided to stretch her legs a bit.
She stood and told Ireti she was going to stretch their legs a bit. Ireti nodded at her and she left the room. She walked out of the building and onto the field. She stretched a bit and rubbed her belly and her baby kicked. She smiled at the girl's reaction. It was Thursday and the air stank of carbon. The incinerator was at work. She sighed in irritation and turned to leave. She bumped into a guard.

“Officer”, she greeted.

“You have a visitor.”, the man informed with his eyes on her chest.

“Thank you.”, she said ignoring his lecherous stare. She had gotten used to it. Stares from the guards were familiar to her. It disgusted her but there was nothing she could do about it. She cleared her throat to snap him out of whatever filthy thoughts he was entertaining.

He led the way to the visiting area. She smiled when she saw her visitor.

“Monique.”, she said and hugged the young girl.

“Sis. Tinu. How are you? How is the baby?”, the girl gushed. “Im so sorry I couldn’t come to visit you earlier. I just got back from school last week and mum and dad would not let me leave the house.”

“I understand.”, Tinu said and they sat.

“Sis. Tinu, I don’t believe you killed him. I know you’re innocent.”, Monique stated.

“Thanks for believing my innocence. It means a lot to me. How was school? Wait a minute, do your parents know you’re here?”, Tinu said.

“School was fine. No, my parents do not know I’m here. I told them I was going to the mall…”
“Monique…”

“I didn’t lie. I did go to the mall. I asked the driver to drop me off there and I took a taxi here.”, the girl explained.

“Your mum will kill you if she learns you took public transport. And if she finds out she came to visit me?

“Well, if she kills me she’d come and keep you company here”, Monique said laughing. Tinu raised her eyebrow. “Sorry. It sounded funnier in my head. Anyway, I just wanted to see you and inquire after your well-being and that of my niece.”

“Were as good as prison let’s us be. The doctor here is nice. He’s a priest and… What on Earth are you doing here?”, Tinu exclaimed and stood. Monique turned immediately and saw a man standing in the doorway.

“How are you doing, Tinu?”, Dele asked.

As per my retort to someone's comment.

Writing these prison scenes is really arduous. I am trying real hard to picture what a Nigerian prison looks like. Who knows next year I might sign up for my faculty's HR trip to Nigerian prisons and maybe suggest a trip to a female prison.

If we want I can just fast forward to the part where things pick up again.

I'm angry with myself already. Please don't put me down more.

Thank you.

Hi Millie (since I don't know your beautiful name). Thanks for this beautiful story. I know it can be really challenging trying to make the story as real as possible by doing as much research as you can. I just want you to know there are people who really appreciate the lengths you go. Please don't be angry with yourself at all.
I know inspiration doesn't come at all times, so take your time and live life as you write.

It was a few days till her husband, Jolá came back from his trip to the capital. She longed for him. He had been gone for two months and though he called her every night, it wasn't like having him around and being in his strong and loving arms.

Folá, his twin brother was besotted with her. He had made passes and innuendos even when her husband was present. She always felt irritated and annoyed but her husband told her it was Fola's nature. She was a woman and she knew the look in his eyes when he spoke, she knew he was serious but her husband always shushed her and said his brother would never do anything to her.

That night she had dropped Délé off at her in-law's house. She sat on the sofa in sitting room reading the new literature text she had to treat in class with her students. She heard the doorbell ring and she went to see who it was. She asked who it was and the caller said “It’s me, sugar!". Her heart got giddy as she heard her husband's voice. She excitedly opened the door only to see the menacing and dreaded eyes of her brother- in - law.

Her husband and his brother were photocopies of each other, with the same look and appearance and even the same voice. The only difference between her husband and his brother was their eyes. Jolá's eyes were like stars, shimmering with calmness and peace, whereas Folá's eyes were like brimstone, dull and dangerous. She regretted her decision immediately.

He ravished her with his eyes, licking his lips like a lion looking at a fleshy gazelle. She hated the fact she wore only a tank top and shorts that put her thighs on display. She tremored in fear. She, in reflex, quickly shoved the door in his face. But he was stronger and pushed back. She fell due to the impact. He entered and tsked and he locked the door.

"Is that how to treat your brother-in-law?", he asked mockingly.
“What do you want?” she inquired in fear as she crawled backwards slowly. She looked at his eyes and was afraid as they held the answer.
“You. ", he answered huskily, obviously aroused.

She mustered up strength from the depths of her soul and got up and tried to run but he caught her and shoved her against the nearest wall. A sob escaped her lips just before his lips came crashing down on hers. His hands were everywhere and she instinctively grabbed a picture frame from the table beside them and hit it on his head.

“Bitch!", he swore and held his head in pain. She tried to escape but he was quicker and he pulled her back and back handed her. She kicked him in the groin and he groaned in pain. She tried to run again but he pulled her back and punched her twice in the stomach. She fell in pain. She tried to scream for help, hoping her neighbours were around. He slapped her twice and she whimpered in pain.

"Please", she begged appealing to his sense of humanity.
He ignored her and pressed savage, disgusting kisses to her body. His hands went lower and undid her shorts. He took advantage of her weakness and she cried throughout it all. When he was through he carried her to her matrimonial bed and resumed his acts of desecration. She cried harder as she felt impure on their matrimonial bed.

Will Jolá ever forgive me?
Excellento, the simplicity of your work makes it all the more classic, bravo!!

Ok. I don't know if this is a crass joke or it's meant to be offensive. Sarcasm and jokes are usually lost on me. I will keep calm as per civility.

Dude, I am holiday. I am not in school anymore where there is practically uninterrupted power supply. We've not had light here for going to a week. And I charge my phone at night to use for my research work. Besides, I have things at home I am doing that take up my time. And sometimes there is no inspiration. What exactly do you want me to do?

Last week, I said I was feeling under the weather and not so strong. So please be considerate..

I sincerely apologise if I misunderstood your comment. Like I said earlier, sarcasm is usually lost on me.
Wish I can say I understand your plight, guess I do. Anyway, here goes: As an average Nairalander, we see a story we like we follow, and when we follow, all what we want is regular consistent updates.

Trust me, we're not concerned with or about your personal drama and situations. You don't like it that way, don't write interesting stories.
And as for the power issue, MTN has a solution, or you try other channels.

Summary is, this story is making sense, I want regular updates.

Well done

Mimi, you're doing an exceptionally amazing work with this piece. I really do applaud you because I know what it means to write. Tinu stood before the Director of the Prison watching him answer phone call after phone call. Her legs were aching but the man thought it nice and dandy to keep her on her bloated feet for thirty minutes while he conversed about a secondary school students reunion. Well, she was the prisoner. She couldn’t complain. Finally, he hung up. The man looked at her and shook his head in irritation. He twitched his somewhat handlebar moustache and looked at the file before him and tsked.

“I can’t begin to understand you women. According to your file, you came into this prison roughly two months ago and now because what some stupid notion you have inside your head, you think you can begin to cause trouble. In my prison? Ehn? Did they not tell you? Abi you did not believe them?”

Tinu brows stitched themselves together in confusion. How did she cause trouble? She had been the one on the receiving end of trouble.

“Answer me!”, the man shouted causing Tinu to jump.

“Director, I didn’t do anything.”, she explained.

“So I’m the one lying? Or the bruises on Aliya are the ones lying?”, the man snapped.

Aliya? Which bruises?

“Bring Aliya in here!”, the man barked the order to one of the guards standing behind Tinu.

“Yes, sir”, the man shouted as he stamped his foot in an attention and left the office slamming the door behind him.

Were they mixing her up with some other Tinu? Or did Aliyah lie against her because she slapped her. The door whined as it was swung open. Tinu turned to see a battered Aliya and she clamped her hand against her mouth. Not because of the table tennis balls with slits that were now Aliyah’s eyes or her bloodied mouth that looked like she had two limes in them but because Aliya could go to such lengths to get back at her. She watched Aliya walk into the office as though she had spring onions for legs.

“Aliya, is this the person that beat you?”, the director asked.

Tinu jaw dropped and her eyes widened as Aliya groaned and nodded sluggishly.

“Sir, I swear I didn’t do this to her. I mean, I’m six months pregnant. How could I have possibly beaten her?”, she asked perplexed.

“Be asking me. Take her back to the infirmary. “, the director ordered. Tinu watched in consternation as Aliya limped towards the door with the guard's hand on her arm. “Shebi, you want to prove you have wings. I will clip those wings and show you who is in charge here.

“Sir, I didn’t do anything.”, she said.

“Garba, process her file. As from today on, she will remain in solitary confinement till I say otherwise. She will have that bastard of hers in there. She will rot in there till I say otherwise. No visitors. No nothing. When you get in there, that Mohammed Ali in you that is making you beat up innocent women will disappear. Get her out of my sight.”, the man ordered.

Seyifunmi whimpered with unshed tears in her eyes as she returned to Dele’s room. She gulped down a sob and picked up her handbag. She sat on the bed and rubbed her forehead and took a deep breath. Tears wouldn’t solve anything. That was her mother’s mantra. She had been so selfish. If only she had heeded to mother’s pleas then it wouldn’t have happened. God, what was she going to do?

She looked up as the en suit door creaked. Dele stepped out of the bathroom in a towel. At any other time, she might have ogled his body. But not today, not when she knew her mother was in the hospital, not when her mother was suffering because of her selfishness. She turned away from the fine specimen of the male species and faced the door.

“Are you okay?”, he asked. She heard the opening of his armoire and the spraying sound and the fragrance of his Axe body spray.

“Um, yeah. Please, I need a ride home. I need to get home immediately.”, she replied still facing the door.

“I thought we were spending the weekend together before I return to Abuja.”, he stated.

“Dele, please.”, was all she muttered and bowed her head. She heard him pad towards her and stop right in front of her.

“Seyifunmi, are you okay? Did I do something wrong?”, he asked as he sat on his haunches. She shook her head and he tipped her chin up. She saw his worried eyes dilated in shock. She finally released the sob that was stinging her throat and threw her arms around his neck and wailed. His hands rubbed her back as she cried.

Dele had never seen her cry before. His eyes went wide at her wet eyes and her quivering lips. He wondered what could have made her cry. She was still laughing when he entered the bathroom. What could have changed in the ten minutes he was in there?

“Dele, it’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have taken the transfer. She begged me not to but I was so selfish.”, she sobbed into his neck.

“Calm down. Everything is going to be ok.”, he pacified and stroked her hair.

“No, it’s not. You don’t understand.”, she said and broke away from his embrace. She sniffles and wiped her tear sodden cheeks with the sleeve of her blouse. “Dele, my mum had a stroke. No one was at home with her. If not for the neighbor who wanted to check if she wanted to buy ogi then no one would have found her. She begged me not to leave her alone in the house and I told her not to hinder my progress, Dele. Dele, I told her not to hinder my progress. Now, she could have died because of me. How will everything be ok? What do I tell my brothers and sisters? What do I tell Dad? If something happens to her, how can I live with myself when the last thing I ever told her was not to hinder my progress?”

“Calm down. I know it hurts but you need to calm down. We can fix it.”, he said.

She sniffles again and said, “I’ve already thought about that. I’m going to resign. I’ll email my resignation letter to them tomorrow or better yet, I’ll drop a letter at the Ibadan office.”

“Ibadan?”, he said and sat beside her on the bed.
“I’m going back home. I need to be with my mother. She needs me now.”, she explained.

“I think you’re taking things too far. Be rational.”, he said.

“Rational? My mother just had a stroke. Did you not hear me say that?”, she glared up.

“I did but then be practical. Where are you going to get a job if you toss away this one?”, he asked.

“I don’t know and frankly, I don’t care. My mother is more important to me than having to write codes and programs for someone. I have enough savings to live on and besides, I can always work for my dad again.”, she answered.

“I still feel it’s impulsive. You could get a nurse or have one of your siblings take care of her.”, he said and went towards his armoire.

“Why are you talking like this? Half my siblings are abroad. Brother Lekan is based in Port-Harcourt and Brother Lanre basically works offshore. Sister Liza is pregnant and Sister Simi just went back to work after her maternity leave. So which of my siblings are you referring to?”, she explained as she stood to face him.

“Look, I’m just giving an opinion. Do you really want to give up your career for your mother?”, he stated.

“So are you opining that I turn my back on my mother? Like you turned your back on yours?”, she stated in fury.

“Seyifunmi, you are crossing the line.”, he said as he spun to face her.

“No. I’m just stating an opinion. You know what, I shouldn’t have discussed this with you. You can never understand. While you may see your own mother as nothing, I cherish my mother. I made a mistake leaving her and I’m going to make up for it. Don’t worry about the ride. I’ll call a cab.”, she said and stormed out the room.

Rosanna groaned and turned to face Dare. He had that amused look in his eyes. Those eyes. Her gaze descended to the smile on his face. His pink, full lips were spread in a crooked smile. She used to love kissing those pink, pillowy lips. She sighed and bit her lower lip as she remembered what those lips had done to her that night. She shook her head to dispel those raunchy memories.

“Dare, what do you want?”, she groaned.

“Dinner with you.”, he said simply.

“And if we have that dinner with me, you will leave me alone, return to L.A. and forget about me?”, she asked.

“I promise. But I’m not so sure you’d want me to leave after tonight.”, he said and closed the gap between them.

“Don’t bet on it, Alisdare…”

“I miss hearing you say my name like that.”, he said breathily and tucked a stray strand of her hair behind her ear. Her breath caught at the simple act. His touch caused sparks to fly and a shiver of excitement ran from her crown to her toes and her tripled it’s pumping rate. She looked up to his eyes in amazement. She met his honey brown eyes shimmering with an emotion she had seen in them all those years ago. She saw his eyes look down at her lips. She averted her gaze and nervously ran her tongue over her bottom lip. She heard a rumble emit from him and she looked up to meet his eyes turn the darkest shade of brown she had ever seen them go.

“I’m going to kiss you now, Rosanna.”, he informed her and pressed his lips to hers.

✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴

Dare sauntered in air of achievement into the flower shop. He smiled as he remembered the breathtaking look on her face after he kissed her. She still tasted the way he remembered. She probably still eat orange Jell-O every morning for breakfast and still used the cherry lip-gloss she used all those years ago. He went semi-hard recalling the way she had arched against him and moaned as his tongue danced with hers. She had kissed him back with equal fervor. He smiled and left his reverie. They’d finish what they started in the evening.

He turn towards the desk and smiled at the elderly woman at the desk.

“Goodmorning, welcome to Flora et Al. How can I help you?”

“Morning. I’d like to order some flowers and have them delivered somewhere.”, he answered.

“Natural or artificial?”, she asked as she brought out a pen and notepad.

“Natural.”, he answered.

“We have roses, African violets, orchids, lilies and sunflowers.”, she answered and looked up at him.

“Sunflowers. They are her favorite.”, he said and the woman smiled at her.

“So how many? And do you want to pick out a vase?”, she asked.

“About two dozen. And I’m not sure what kind of vase will impress her.”, he said.

“How about a simple clear cut crystal vase?”, the woman asked and pointed at a sample on the rack behind her

“It seems ok. I want to leave her a message.”, he said.

“No problem.”, the woman said and bent to look for something. After a few minutes, she stood and faced him. “My dear, I’m so sorry. It seems we’verun out of cards here. We have them in the back but my son is the one who knows where they are exactly. Can you write the message in this pad?” We’ll typeset onto the card., the woman pleaded.

“I really want to leave the message in my handwriting.”, Dare said.

“Im sorry. If you’re not in a hurry, I could go to the storeroom to look for the cards.”, the woman said.

Dare looked at his watch and shook his head. “No, I have someplace to be by ten.”

“So will you write it down?”, the woman said smiling pleadingly.

“Oh, alright.”, he said succumbing to the old woman’s plea. The woman smiled and handed him the pad.

Roselle laughed at Mayowa’s joke as they strolled out of the elevator. She put her arm around his waist and rested her head on his shoulder. She was so happy she came to her senses sooner and asked for his forgiveness. She couldn’t imagine her life without him. They halted as someone stopped in front of them. She looked up and saw Ose. He looked from her to Mayowa. She felt Mayowa’shand come around her waist protectively. She could see the green eyed monster in his dark eyes and clenched jaws. She had hurt him.

“Ose..”, she whispered in shame. He shook his head and walked away from them and to the elevator.

“Roselle.”, Mayowa called.

“I feel so ashamed of myself.”, she said.

“Its ok. Let’s have dinner together tonight.”, he suggested.

“Can we just grab some snacks from the café across the street instead. I’ll be busy tonight.” He raised his eyebrow. “What?”, she asked as his arm fell off her waist.

“I thought you were free throughout this week.”, he asked.

“A last minute meeting came up.”, she answered.

“Fine, if you say so.”, he said. She smiled and wound her arms around his neck. “You know, jealousy os a very randy colour on you.”, she breathed into his ear.

“How randy?”, he asked smiling.

“Make me wet kind of randy.”, she breathed smiling.

“Roselle, you are playing with fire.”, he advised and removed her arms from his neck and she laughed.

They approached the security desk with their hands intertwined. Roselle watched Mayowa drop his visitor’s pass and sign out in the register.

“Sorry, good afternoon. I have flowers here for a Miss Rose, FDL publishing house.”, a man said and she turned around.

“That’s her.”, the security guard informed the delivery man.

“Miss Rose?”, he asked. She nodded and turned to smile at Mayowa. He shook his head and she turned to look at the delivery man in confusion. The man handed her a clear cut crystal vase with long stemmed sunflowers and gave her a card to sign.

“im sorry. Who sent this?”, she asked the man as he turned to leave.

The man smiled and said, “Dare sent it with all his love.” The man winked at her and left. Roselle stood there confused and opened the card stuck on a cardholder. 'Rose, I can’t wait for our dinner tonight. And I missed kissing you. Love, Dare.”

“Wow.”, Mayowa said. She turned to face him. “Mayowa, this isn’t mine. I don’t know this guy.”, she explained and dropped the vase on the security's desk.

“Save it. I should have known a leopard never changes his spots. Please, just don’t say anything because I might not be able to control myself.”, he said and walked out of the building.

Gabriel latched unto MJ's arm as she walked past him. She turned and gave him a glare.
“Please, let’s talk.”, he begged.
“Are you sure you have the time? Your girlfriend might be waiting for you.”, she said cheerily with a cynic smile on her face.
“MJ, she is not my girlfriend. I don’t date traitors and skanks.”, he replied gritting out the not.
“Your preference of women is not my business. My business is getting revenge and avenging the death of Simon. So, I ask you 'Gabe'”, she said moaning out the Gabe like Tanya had when she saw her. “Is your head in the game?”
He sighed. She was still on this revenge issue. He knew MJ was never one to let things go but he had hoped seeing him with another woman would make her feel somewhat jealous and maybe invoke feelings in her.
“Yes.”, he said. It was only a matter of time till they got their revenge and she’d be his. “What did you want to tell me?”
Her voice went up an octave and stars shimmered in her eyes. She bounced on her feet in excitement. “I found out who was behind the pollution and murder charges Oduah Holdings is facing.”
“Who is it?”, he asked with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“Al-Nasser Jewellers. But that’snot the interesting part. Guess who gave them all the information they needed.”, she asked in glee.
“Who?”, he asked.
“It was…” His phone blared out his rock n roll ringtone and he brought it out of his pocket. He checked the caller ID and rejected the call.
“Who was that?”, she asked.
“No one important.”, he answered and the phone began to ring again. He grunted and rejected the call. “What were you saying?”
MJ eyed the phone in skepticism and shrugged it off. It wasn’t her business. If he chose to ignore his calls, it wasn’t her business. Though she could bet her arm and leg on who was calling him. She sighed as the phone erupted into the loud song again.
“You know what? Pick your call. I’ll wait.”, she offered.
“No MJ. You’re more important.”, he said and opened the case of his phone, removed the back coverand pulled out his Sim. “Nothing matters more than you, MJ.”
“Nothing matters more than avenging Simon.”, she corrected smiling.

Ose scanned the café for a free table. He knew he should have come down for lunch after rush hour but he couldn’tget his mind off Roselle. He had thought she would choose him but apparently he never meant anything to her. He’d never forget the glee in voice as she laughed with her boyfriend. It sickened him. The jealousy sickened him. How could she tell him she felt something for him, lead him on, make him fall for her and not still choose him in the end. His grip tightened on the tray. He wished he had chosen another day to collect his cheque. He wished her the same pain she had caused him. Yes, the same pain. How could she be laughing in glee when he had been pining for her for months. His phone was never far from him as he waited for her to call. But she never did.
It was his fault. He had no one else to blame. He was the one who jumped at the first woman he saw in her underthings and said she felt something for him. No, she took advantage of him. Or did she? She never forced him to act on her feelings. He sought her out. And that was the biggest mistake of his life.
He stomped towards the only free chair he found and slammed his tray onto the table causing the diner there to look up. She smiled at him.
“And like usual, I’ve caught you in a bad day.”, she said. A small chuckle left him as he sat. “Im sorry. Just a really bad day.”
“I should know. It seems today is everyone’s bad day.”, she answered.
“You having a bad day?”, he asked as her opened his doughnut.
“Nope. My boss is. That’s why half the editing department is here. We’re steering clear of the wrath of Roselle Pepple.”, she stated anf took a sip of her coffee.
“Hmmn.”, he said. Karma was fast.
“So why are you having a bad day?”, she asked.
“Women issues and let’sleave it at that.”, he said.
“I never pegged you as the sort to have women issues. You seem like the type that creates issues for women.”, she said.
He smiled. He used to be. A big player, going through women like hot knife through butter. But Bibiana changed all that. She made him believe in love. And that was the reason for his current predicament.
“Domt judge a book by its cover”, he said and took a bite out of his doughnut. “Besides, women can be nasty even for women issue creators.”
“Well, you have a point. But men have been in the business much longer.”, she asserted.
“Don’t tell me I landed on a feminist table the one day I want to bitch about women.”, he said laughing.
“Nope, just the table of a woman with men issues.”, she said and groaned.
“That bad?”, he said and took a gulp of his soda.
“I’ve never been more confused. I want him so bad yet I can’t seem to let go of what he did to me. Does that make me a masochist?”, she asked groaning.
“Uhuhn. You can’t have it both ways, dear. You want to hold on to the past because you’re afraid of what you feel for him. You love him so much that you want to find a reason not to. Hence, you holding onto his mistake. Love is a gamble. You’re either in or out. And please as a man who is hurt by a woman’s fickleness, I beg you. Make a choice soon. Don’t leave him hanging.”, he said.
Her eyes met his and she let out a sigh of frustration. Was she ready to trust Dare again? Was she ready to give him the whole of her heart like she did back then? Was she willing to let him go? Was she willing to forget about him? Was she ready to make a choice?

Tinu sat in the dust sweltering like a lid over boiling water. She clutched the shirt of her uniform as the jagged teeth of hunger ripped at and lacerated her stomach. Regina kicked in protest to the starvation. Her empty stomach throbbed with echoes of her fast heartbeat. She yawned and tears let her eyes.
God, please, some food. Even if it is stale bread. Anything please.
Her baby kicked again but this time more violently. She yelled in pain. She hissed and yelled at the spoilt brat. If she wanted to kick someone, she should kick the foolish director who confined her into this dusty, six by three cell. She looked up at the flickering bulb. She knew she’d be using glasses after the assault of the bulb's going on and off on her eyes. She looked away and hoped for food. She looked at the light coming in from underneath the door. The guard lights were on. This was the third night without food. She’d give anything for the small portion of stone and debris filled beans she usually got. She’d eat it without complaint.
The loud clank of the latch of her cell door being opened made her jump up in alacrity. The speed of her movement caused her eyes to go dark with white light dancing in front of them. Her ears rang loudly and she leaned on the wall for the spell to abate. Her mouth pooled with saliva and her heart danced. Food was here.
The door opened and she saw a guard come in holding a black small nylon. She looked past him to the waiting earnestly for the small stainless steel plate that connoted dinner. Her hopes were abruptly dashed as the guard outside pulled the door shut. She looked at the man’s hand as the aroma of suya filled her nostrils. She swallowed her saliva in a loud gulp and her mouth began to fill up again as though someone left a faucet on. The guard opened the dark nylon and unwrapped the sheet of newspaper used to pack the grilled meat. She sighed and hoped the man had taken pity on her and decided to feed her.
Her eyes trailed the man’s hand as it dipped into the nylon and picked up a large piece of suya and throw it into his mouth. She looked at the man and found his eyes on hers. Did he come to taunt her? To mock her? To show her what she was dying for but could never have? A please came into her throat but she swallowed it with the flood of saliva in her mouth. Did he want her to beg? She watched the man pick up piece after piece of meat and chew them with relish.
She decided to throw her pride outside the window. It hadn’t fed her and it wouldn’t now.
“Please sir.”, she croaked and cleared her throat and begged again. “Please sir. I’m hungry.” She gulped and hoped he would pity her.
“Quid pro quo, dear, quid pro quo.”, the guard replied.
“Sir, if you let me get in touch with my people, they can get you money. You can even receive the alert now now.”, she rambled. Her heart beat in excitement and the possibility of getting dinner.
“The man smiled and crossed the small distance between them. He looked into her eyes and told her squarely, “That wasn’t what I had in mind.” His gaze descended to her heavy breasts and back up to her eyes telling her exactly what he had in mind.
“Never.”, she spat out.
“Are you sure?”, he asked laughing.
“I’d rather die hungry.”, she retorted.
“What about your baby? Is servicing me more important than your baby’s life?”, he asked. “How long will it survive without food?” Her hand protectively went over her belly.
“Food will come.”, she replied.
“Food is here. Only for a small inconsequential token. I offer food in return. Where the others will rape you and take without your consent, I promise to be a gentleman.”, he stated matter-of-factly.
“No.”, she said shaking her head.

Rosanna tiptoed along the walls by Roselle’s office. She didn’t want to be on the receiving end of her rage. She almost made it to the bullpen when she heard a shrill voice say “Rosanna Amaechi, in my office right now!” She winced in terror. Why on Earth had she gotten carried away? It turned out lunch with Ose would get her fired. They had gone on and on talking about their favorite books. When Ose commented that he didn’t really like Jane Eyre, she had gone all out to defend her favorite book. She hoped she wouldn’tget fired. She had never been fired and she didn’t want to start now. Not when her interview at the University of Lagos was in two weeks.
She raised the knuckle of her index finger to forehead and two shoulders in the sign of the cross and kissed it and prayed to whoever was the patron saint of temperamental bosses to touch Roselle’s heart. She entered the office and shut the door behind her.
Roselle’s office always took her breath away. It was a mini Beast’s library. Every free surface was covered with books of all shapes and sizes, covers and jackets. She wished she could do something similar when she got her lecturing job in the University. She probably wouldn’t get an office to herself.
“I didn’t call you here to gawk at my office. I called you here because your goddamn boyfriend can’t specify which blasted Rose he wants his flowers delivered to.”, Roselle snapped.
“What? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”, Rosanna said whimpering.
“This.”, Roselle shouted and threw a card at her. She sighed and picked it up. She opened it and there in beautiful cursive letters, sat ‘Rose, I can’t wait for our dinner tonight. And I missed kissing you. Love, Dare.' Embarrassment coursed through her. Roselle had read her card.
She swallowed and said, “I apologise. It won’t repeat itself. Where are my flowers?” Roselle rolled her eyes and said, “ That is not the issue. My boyfriend was with me when I received the blasted sun flowers and now he believes I’m cheating on him with a Dáre…” Rosanna's breath caught at the mention of sunflowers. He remembered.
“Dare.”, Rosanna corrected.
“Do I look like I care? You are going to help me fix it.”
“Ok? But where are my flowers?”, Rosanna insisted.
“I’m talking about something important and you are asking for flowers?”, Roselle asked bewildered.
“But where are my flowers?”, Rosanna said laughing mirthlessly.
“I threw them away before I realized they were for you.”, Roselle said offhandedly.
“Look, im sorry to say it but I say it nonetheless. I don’t give two f***s about your relationship. It is not my duty to fix the goddamn trust issues you and your boyfriend have. I apologise for my boyfriend’s ineptitude in addressing the flowers to the right person but you had absolutely no right to trash my flowers. And you can fix your problem without my help.”, Rosanna said and walked out of Roselle’s office.

Dele's fingers tightened around the steering wheel. He wondered what he would tell her. Though she hurt him, he had punished her in to cruelest way possible. He severed ties with her. He had stopped picking her calls and replying her text messages. She used to be an edifice in the centre of his life but he had long demolished the structure. She used to be on a pedestal but he had knocked her. She used to be his greatest friend but he turned his back on her.
As much as he tried to justify he actions with what she did, his justification didn’t suffice. He had to apologise. Whether he liked it or not, she was his mother. She had sacrificed a lot for him and made him what he was. He couldn’t throw her away because of a singular mistake, despite it’s gravity.
He looked out his window and saw an elderly couple walking their dog. He smiled. He wanted that with someone. He looked again and noticed how awfully the woman’s portrait had an uncanny semblance to that of his mother. He pulled his car over and wound his window down. It was his mother.
His heart jumped on treadmill. What would he say to her? Was he to keep on driving? Was he supposed to go over to meet her and her … What was the man to her? Was he just a friend? Or was he her love interest? He decided to go over to greet them. He got out of his car and crossed the road to meet them.
“Mum.”, he called and she and her friend turned around.
“Bamidele?”, she asked doubting her eyes.
“E k’aro, ma.”, he greeted in a half prostration. “Good morning, sir”, he directed at the man by his mother’s side.
“K’aro. What a surprise.”, she said emotionless. Dele found it hard to believe this woman was smiling thirty seconds ago. He never thought he’d live to see the day his mother was not happy to see him. His heart tore into shreds. “Donald, this is my son, Bamidele, the one I told you about. Dele, this is Donald, my friend and nextdoor neighbor.”, she introduced.
“Let’s not forget doctor and exercise partner.”, the man said laughing and stretched his hand out for a handshake. “Young man, it’s nice to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you. Both good and bad.”, the man said as Dele shook his hand. He contorted his face into a mock frown. “But mostly good.”, he added again smiling cheerily.
“And this is Robert.”, his mother said gesturing to the big, white shepherd dog Donald was holding by a leash.
“Its nice to meet you both, sir.”, Dele said.
“How are Oluwatomini and Temiloluwa? Are they here with you?”, she said with excitement dancing in her eyes.
“No. They’re not.”, he answered.
“So what brings you over to this side of Lagos?”, his mother asked with her voice clipped.
“Elsa.”, Donald chided.
“Donald, what? Did he sleep for a year and suddenly woke up and remembered he has a mother?”, Dele’s mother asked more to Dele than to Donald. Robert barked at the seeming growing confrontation and moved restlessly.
“Robert, behave yourself.”, Donald warned sternly. The dog whined and calmed down.
“Mum, please. I’m sorry. I want to talk to you.”, Dele pleaded.
“As you can see, I’m on a walk right now. If you really want to see me, you can go and wait for me at home.”, she said
