Interview date: Dec 17, 2019
Location: US consulate office, Lagos.
University applied: North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro
Course: MSc Natural Resources/Conservation with $24,000 Research Assistantship. Bal ($7000)
Travel history: UK, US (twice), Australia, France, Ghana, Benin

Had the interview at window 8 (can’t really remember the number, but I am sure it was the last window). Everyone before me was denied including a couple who had been to US not less than 3 times. The consulate officer on window 4 was just denying people except extremely old people.

The interview went thus;
VO: Good morning
Me: Good morning

VO: Pass me your i20 and passport
Me: passed the i20 and passport

VO: Scan your right four fingers (excluding the thumb)

Me: I did just that

VO then typed in my document id on his system and began to make funny sounds with his mouth for like 10secs………. then, he faced me and asked

VO: why did you want to go to the US?
Me: I would like to go to the US for my post graduate program in Natural Resources/Conservation in the department of Agriculture and Environmental System at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (NCAT) State University, Greensboro.

VO then concentrated on tying speedily on his system for many seconds. I was just thinking, what is going on here? Then he faced me again and continued

VO: why did you choose this course?
Me: I chose this course because the first postgrad program I had wasn’t thorough enough (I had already studied masters in the UK). The research methodology was qualitative, and I wanted something quantitative. And I’ve had several discussions with Dr ******** who is the head of the graduate studies in the department at NCAT. He has assured me of getting what I want. More so, I have gone through the curriculum of the course and I could see that they are wider enough in scope to deliver what I want.

VO nodding his head as I was speaking.

Believe me, in my mind, I was already thinking that all I’ve said doesn’t really answer the question. I was just tensed with the fact that the fate of all my stress on getting the admission and securing the fund would be determined in few minutes.

VO: what will you be doing after this program?
Me: I just said PhD. Then I continued by saying, I am currently in contact with **** university and ******* research organisation in New Zealand to take up a project in Nigeria towards the award of my PhD.

VO was just nodding

VO: Who will be sponsoring you?
Me: I just answered my uncle, then paused for like 5 secs because I never wanted that question as it raises concerns from what I’ve observed in visa interview trends. After pausing for a while, I continued by saying he owns an integrated farm after he retired as a bank manager some years back. (This was not how I planned to give my response)

VO: But you have an assistantship
Me: (I had already forgotten to mention this. I thought in my mind that it’s been discussed). So, I quickly said yes, I have a full graduate research assistantship.

Then VO started typing profusely till he said today, we are going to issue your visa. At that point, I wasn’t even interested in anything he was saying after as I was too glad that I just wanted to leave to call my loved ones.

I have really learnt a lot on this group and that is the reason I am providing this transcript as it would help others in one or two ways.

Go through this thread from page 1, read all the transcripts, both denial and approval. Along the way, start building up your own transcript, type it somewhere and do a lot of mock interviews, infront of the mirror and in front of your family/friends.

OK thanks
Don’t send your original certificate for any reason. When you arrive, you can go to the office of graduate studies and show them a physical copy of the certificate. Cheers

Hello... i would like to know if someone with a 3 year bachelor degree, (didn't school in Nigeria), can apply for a graduate program to schools in the US? Studied linguistics but would like to change to communication studies
List of schools would be highly appreciated..... Thanks
The US does not accept 3 year degree equivalent. It has to be a four year degree.

Hello Nairalander,
If your dream is to come study, please don't give up on it, Michigan is a nice state so is America, it's getting cold little by little but i'm being told by winter i would really know and understand what cold looks like, lol...
Resumed this fall and for anyone considering Eastern Michigan university, Ypsilanti, you could shoot me a mail, it's not bad here...
God bless our hustles.

I am planning to apply for Msc Chemistry fall 2020. Well done. So how is the winter dealing with you now?

this is too much of a blanket statment .............. For example the UK are on a 3 years degree, are you saying US will not accept a UK 3 years degree . Instead i would ask what school is this and what country first

Hello guys, my visa was approved today Dec 19th, 2019 at US Embassy.

School: Western Kentucky University
Graduate Assistantship: $26k
Balance: $3297

Before I delve into questions I was asked. I will like to say every single I was asked where questions I had written down prior and my interview went exactly the way I prayed (I prayed against being asked SOA and I wasn't asked

My interview questions in no particular order

V.O: How are doing
Me: I'm doing great thank you.

V.O: passport and I20 pls
Me: passed it. (At this point I wasn't having cold feet and pretty much calm. Btw he had denied two guys before me

VO: why are you goin to the US
Me: To pursue a masters degree in Chemistry @ Western Kentucky University (WKU)

VO: why WKU
Me: because WKU offers interdisciplinary specialty such as computational chem, materials chem, nanochemistry, Env Chem, Hybrid inorganic-organic polymer. (VO cuts me and said but all school offers dat) Then i said not all schools do; must schools.offer courses in the traditional fields of chemistry namely organic, inorganic, physical and analytic process. * Btw I failed to tell him WKU has an advanced materials institute dat specializes in the analysis and characterization of materials for research purposes* However he was pleased wit my response. I must also mention that when he cut me I didn't fidget rather I used it to drive home my point, I was assertive in a way dat showed I know what I was talking about.

VO: How many schools did u apply? ( Didn't ask me to name them)
Me: 4

VO: do you knw any about Kentucky?
Me: Yes I do. "WKU is in Bowling Green which is the third largest city after Louisville & Lexington. The Gov is Andrew Beshear. Motto of the state is United we stand divided we fall. ( Kentucky is bounded by Ohio River in the North and Appalachian mountains in the East - didn't remember to say dis as he was satisfied wit the aforementioned)

VO checks my i20 and said "oh you were offered GT Assitanship, so whose gonna support you
Me: My dad
VO: what does he do
Me: He is a business man. He owns an oil. & Gas coy and dey are into sales and distribution of Diesel.
He didn't ask me to show my bank statement. The only documents are asked for were my passport and I20.

VO: what are you goin to be doing after graduation
Me: I'll come back to 9ja take a new position as a researcher in our lab.
VO: what does your company do?
Me: we into Engineering and Laboratory research.

VO: I will be issuing your visa @ dis tym
Me: at dis point I couldn't believe my eyes. Beginning of 2019, I didn't know when I was gonna write GRE but I would write. Collected the white paper - I momentarily felt like a star .
Got to the queue to pay the reciprocity fee excused myself to d bathroom and I jst started praising God.

My advice : prepare well. Speak confidently if possible slow in order to pick ur words right and audibly. Above all prayer every single I prayed about turned out.

This is how my interview went y'all.

Till we all make it, we are all a work in progress. Remember a pregnant woman doesn't envy a nursing mother.
Thanks and bye
