You’re way off.

I am blessed with an opportunity of early retirement.

A quick side note. An unsolicited advice to young folks just starting out.

1) Pick an end goal. Whatever it is. Canada citizenship. Castle in Edinburgh. N100M in savings. Shit shack on 100 acres. Whatever.

2) Hustle/struggle every waking hour of your daily life towards that goal.

3) When you reach that goal or within reasonable spiting distance of it then hang it up.

4) Start enjoying your non work life.

5) Don’t die on the job or work till death.

Good advice. Thanks for the advice sir. Make I find our oga house go pay homage cheesy

Don't you miss USA?

Being removed from 30 years of your life isn't exactly easy.
Plus I wonder if Nigeria's deplorable state makes you miss America.

I know it’s unbelievable but there’s really nothing that I miss about the USA. It’s a personal thing and a state of the mind. If I’m forced to come up with be thing I miss then it’s guns. I miss legally owning high powered weapons.

I officially moved back to Nigeria in February. In June I was offered a ticket to the USA by some friends. I left Nigeria hoping to spend a few months but I came back in exactly 6 days. I say this again, much to the chagrin of some mouth breathers on here, Nigeria is fine if you’re blessed and can compose yourself. Nigeria is deplorable but one can mitigate all that.

It’s probably an age and exposure thing. May our favors find us wherever we may be.

Of course now...after spending about 30 years plus living, enjoying, working and spending the better and younger years of your life in the USA why would you miss anything about the USA? cheesy

I just love my life in Nigeria more. As of today sha because in a couple of years after I’ve settled I’ll then start international traveling. A Nigerian friend is trying to get me to move to Thailand. He swears it’s heaven on earth grin

lol!...You should.

Every Nigerian retiree who has enjoyed the best of the Western World during their youthful age all make this same statement.

Nigeria is indeed a dumping ground for most retiree to enjoy their International pension money.

With the very cheap cost of living alone added with the un-countless things and laws one can get away with living in Nigeria why wouldn't an abroad retiree enjoy it more living in Nigeria. cheesy

You've said it all

To make it in Nigeria is very difficult for a common man except through grace of God

Anybody who's opportuned to leave should do so and not be decieved by what they read online

How could someone who spent 31yrs in usa motivate me to stay back in Nigeria! Someone who left Nigeria even when the system is still ok compared to what we have on ground now

Is it everyone who could afford to buy a power generating set?

Is it everyone who could afford to drill borehole?

Is is everyone who will be able to go to standard private hospital when they are sick?

Believe me, or not, there are many countries in South America and Asia where the dollar goes far too just like in Nigeria and they have a working system. I won't have access to my pension for a decade at least wink

Not sure why folks can't just celebrate with me that I actually love Nigeria and came back home. Must there always be an ulterior motive? grin

PS:

I guess I need to say this again.

1) We have an open border in Nigeria, anyone is free to leave at any time. In fact visas are given daily to countless countries in Nigeria.

2) I will never discourage someone not to travel out. It's has nothing to do with me. I made my choices, people should be free to make theirs.

To Nigerians who are here and making it, I will always salute you. It's bad but not the dire straits that some folks try to paint it. Keep on doing you.

As usual, may our blessings find us where ever we are at.

I can relate to this having had an eerily similar background like EgunMogaji2. I grew up in a semi-functioning Nigeria, middle class upbringing and all. I left when things were still relatively sane. The US has been very good to my family and I and many Nigerians I know. However, many elect to return to Nigeria in their retirement years for several reasons (from personal observations). First, the retirement dollar goes a very long way. Second, weather is much more conducive especially for those battling age related ailments. Third, kids are for the most part grown up and out of the house and there is largely no need to worry about them being that they are in the Western world. Fourth, retirement can be a lonely time in the US. Most people are chasing their dreams and have no time for retired people. In Nigeria, a retired person with means will easily make friends and have many people around them to keep them company.

Like EgunMogaji2 mentioned, there are many other countries one could easily go to especially in Asia and the Caribbean. However, it just isnt like your home country. There is nothing like hearing your mother tounge spoken around you constantly. Nothing like feeling you belong (although the locals dont completely feel that you do). Finally, theres nothing like having optionality. If it doesnt work out, you can always run back to the US. Many people I know occasionally come back for medical or other reasons or just to visit family and friends in the summer. The one thing holding me back is family. They have no history or emotional ties to Nigeria like I do so of course, see no reason to be there for more than a few days on any visit.

Thanks for the contribution.

Majority of us in that era and previous era wasn’t necessarily fleeing economic conditions like most are doing now.

Also we return not to break laws or oppress people but to simply enjoy our cultural heritage.

I feel pity for those that don’t see anything of worth in Nigeria. A crying shame really.
