The case of Goodness is that of sheer religious discrimination perpetuated by intellectual falsehood and clever manipulation to hide the truth. She scored the highest in UTME among the three of them under consideration. In order to ensure that she was edged out the ABU authorities inflated the post-UTME scores of the two Muslim candidates so that they can have a higher average score.

The post-UTME has become a manipulative tool in the hands of our tertiary institutions. The way forward is to scrap it so that true merit can be established.

What kind of nonsense "merit" system is offering quotas of 2 people per state? That's not "merit": that's just a quota system. In my admission time, I was only aware of a primary admission list that was purely on merit taking the top scorers in the exams (or using a cut-off), and then other supplemental lists that factored criteria including catchment area and indigenship, educationally disadvantaged states, VC lists etc. But to start making state quotas and calling it "merit" is madness. Northerners are so obsessed with quota systems and "Federal character" and it's destructive to fairness and competence. That was how they destroyed GEJ's PRESSID graduate scholarships because Northerners who were performing poorly could not get any quota allocation.

From the report & evidences allegedly tabled before the JAMB boss, the lady in question wasn't denied admission to study medicine based on "quota" as some have claimed but merit; that much was confirmed by Prof. Oloyede who said A.B.U gave admission to the best two candidates to study the course based on merit.

From Niger, based on the average scores, the lady came third (by JAMB score, she obviously is the highest from her state but when the Post-UTME scores are factored in, she is third).

Let's say in Bauchi the three best scores are 305, 300 and 298


And in Borno the three best scores are 278,276 and 274


It means the 298 in Bauchi would be dropped for the 278 in Borno and you will agree that it's not fair that way



If no one makes the cut in another state, so be it.

Now this is what a responsive agency of the government looks like in action! A tip of the hat to all involved, most especially Prof. Oloyede. That said, there is a need for all government agencies to be Proactive, rather than this reactionary response. This would help prevent issues like this and the many that didn't get this type of publicity.

According to the write up, after investigation JAMB noted "ABU limited their merit list to 2 candidates per state", and this was wrong according to JAMB. Well, by requiring all institution to communicate their admission criteria to JAMB for review before being implemented, would have help prevent future occurrence of such. After merit admission should be nothing other than merit! If ABU is taking 10 students into a department solely by merit, then rank all candidates that applied to that department in descending order of merit (average score in this case) and pick the top 10!

But there was a flaw in the so called merit admission list! You can't call a quota list a merit list. You think they just decided to offer her admission into medicine and surgery now out of the goodness of their hearts? No, it was because they were found out to be corrupting the merit admission list with what should be supplementary (catchment area, ELDA, and other criteria based) list.

Quota system can be unfair but I understand the need. It is all about the minimum. They are trying to give a chance to every state. It would be easier to train a doctor from Niger state than train a doctor from Benue and expect that doctor to move to Niger state to practice.
