Psalmy2cute:

pls how are you going to weed this 10 to 14 acres of pepper?? will you be using mulch?? is there a secret for weed control.,??. I'm having serious issues with weeds on my farm of just 3 plots.. even If I clear the entire farm today by same time next week... I'll see new batch of weeds competing with my pepper plants.. my entire farm right now is an eyesore.. though the plants are doing well.. but the weeds are just ......
we have three weeding options to choose from ,one is to get motorised weeders,(2)is to use plastic hooded knapsack nozzle and apply paraquat herbicide,(3)is to go medieval and use the manpower of our 12 farm workers to scrap, brush and clear the weeds with good old hoes and Cutlass.

.
Paraquat harm every plant. Just spray carefully on weeds alone. It is less risky than glyphosate because if u make mistake, only the leaves it touch will die.

there's no selective herbicide for vegetables yet,but paraquat is more forgiving than glyphosate that's why it is extensively used by contract sprayers in nsukka and that is another option in weed management I forgot to mention, there are team of boys their work is just spraying big farm with herbicides and they charge per plot,100% no crop damage assured, very expert sprayers, anytime,I get their contact I will post it,so farmers can utilize their services and breath easy for a long time before weeds will come again.

from several previous posts many analysts and agric pundits don't believe it is possible to break out ₦500,000 from one plot or 100 bags, even us on some days even think if we took it too far, but from previous results we know it is possible,we have harvested a total of 45-50 bags from 800 sacks of 1600 crops and so far that's the highest yield we have ever got from any of our cucumber farms,so we are already planning for a plan c ,if this current farm falls short on production Target then we are shifting to sack farming for the next project.

Thanks a lot. In my next cuke farm I won't worry about using too much bamboo. And for the net, I'll first check if I can get it in Onitsha.

U better start staking oo. My love for drip is increasing daily. Pls I want to ask. With this ur setup, can u irrigate the whole farm at once or do u do it section by section.

No amount of land is too small for farming.

3 plots of land is way too good for beginners.

You can see that Mr Okoroemeka started this thread with the GOAL of reaping 500,000 naira with 1 plot of land from just Cucumbers.

Thanks so much for your encouragement

I discovered yesterday some emitters on my dripline has failed to release water,.. is there a quick fix for this?? can I try to prick the drip emitter with a needle?

we are planning on how to be getting steady nutrients in small quantities everyday to the cucumbers on one plot ₦500k challenge,we have some ideas but the only one that will be economcal viable and doable is fertigating organic chicken manure through a Venturi injector,we have an open 2000 ltr tank ,we will fill it with water, soak 5-10 or more bags of chicken manure in it and after 1 week we will start to fertigate the manure tea any time we are irrigating and be topping up the tea as it goes down, one problem that is still keeping us on the drawing board is particles clogging the emitters ,we don't want that to happen,we are going ahead with the plan and be thinking how to solve the clogging issue, using new bags for the manure will be one solution, fitting extra filtering net is other,I think more ideas is needed if any of my dear farmers have one,he should help us out, pics of the setup is coming soon.

I suggest you put the manure in a clothing bag like a pillow case .. tie the mouth and soak it in the drum like Lipton tea ..
I think this should be able to reduce the problem

we already have staking net and binding wire on ground it reduces the staking job by 70% so we are not bothered, the irrigation system is connected directly to a 1 hp submersible pump borehole which can only put up enough pressure to irrigate half of the field at a time and we control by a ball valves, but if it is a 6.5 hp mud pump it will irrigate the whole farm at once

don't use needle on it,just give it a harsh tap

I've done this, I've rubbed it, tapped the emitter multiple times.. sometimes it'll bring out just little amount of water and suddenly stop,.. I'm starting to thing it may be error during production

carefully check the pressure of the pump,we have similar problems until we divided the lands in sections,if the water pressure is high enough it will unblock and work, also there are fake China drip that are so bad that we have measured 1.2 ltrs of water coming out from an emitter of 3 ltr/hr.

it's a 3 inch pump.. the pressure of the pump is so high that if we dont reduce it.. it sometimes damages the dripline.. and the dripline supplies reasonable amount of water,.. I made sure to check this myself by digging a hole and inputting a plastic bucket in the hole.. I got more than 3 litres in less than an hour.. it supplies enough water that weeds are growing so well.. you'll think we're in the raining season.. I'm having this issue with just one bed.. with double dripline.. less than 20 emitter are supplying water in the entire bed..

well that's a serious blocking of the emitter if the problem is just not much you can cut off the offending emitter and replace it with another emitter and rejoin with joiners.this blocking issue is giving us nightmares on fertigating organic manure ,what if 30-40% of the emitter got blocked, hmm!

using net bags will be committing sucide, the net has too big holes that will allow debris into the water,we are even considering using brand new garri bags for the manure and refilter the solution before use,,we don't want the added drama of blocked emitters.

if you are planting just for personal consumption market more and marketer are some of the great tasting varieties available, but if you are planting on commercial quantity that's when your focus will be yield,disease/weather resistance, shelf life, days to harvest, etc, which unfortunately market more is very poor in all those aspects.

Thanks for the reply. Wrt fertigating with manure, I found this: http://brucezimmerman.com/articles-4/. Maybe, some drips handle manure teas better than others.

Hello Okoroemeka,
I must say well done. You are doing a great job.
I have a few questions. Did you ridge this particular land or plough it? it looks like you planted on the flat yet you said it's virgin land.

okoroemeka:
With our never ending quest to touch #500k from one plot of land we have reviewed our spacing and planting strategy and found loopholes after careful experimentation on a smaller farm we decided to shrink our previous spacing even further, the result is 3,190 crops in a land measuring 104ft by 51ft,and fully covered by 1000 meter's of drip tape and also we planted at 50/50 ratio cu 999(a proven old school monocieous variety) and lion seed popular f1 a high yielding PF variety,we have known this tight spacing will work now in the dry season, but another good question is will it work during the rainy season?I think the answer will be a capital NO!

the land you are referring to is our own farm in the southeast not Southwest, the land has been disvirgined since time I'm memorial,we just levelled the old cassava mounds, set up the drip and dug holes for manure at intervals were the water is dropping, looking for a virgin land in the southeast is like looking for a virgin in the maternity ward, you can only see such things mostly in the west, north,Midwest and parts of cross river.
