They have done so openly , from the days when ISIS was in rampage in Iraq.

Understand this, for common people they are terrorists or for some they are saviours etc. What's in a label. Reality is they are tools who can be easily brainwashed for doing the bidding of whoever controls them.
The kind of security guarantees you get from your arms supplier, and the geopolitical environment you find yourself matters a lot.

These considerations matter more if you are in Algeria, Morocco, Ethiopia, Syria, Taiwan, Philippines etc

These considerations are different for Nigeria for example, as despite the fact we face serious security challenges, the likely hood another country would open support terrorists in the North or Pipeline vandals in the South is low.

If I'm Morocco, I expect that as I'm buying billions in arms from America, the American government will support me.

If I'm Algeria, I will expect the same from Russia.

If large European countries like France still depend on America to help with logistics of equipment for their operations in Africa, how much smaller countries.

My primary concern from an African stand point is Algeria. The US does not dump it's allies (client state).

The Russians apart from Assad have the most to lose in Syria.

In a theoretical war between Algeria and Morocco, the Americans would not leave Morocco hanging out in the cold.

Giving recent engagements in Syria, can Algeria depend on Russia when the going gets really tough?

Algerian1, what are your thoughts on this.
truth be told ,with events playing out in Syria Russia can't be judged a dependable ally.

Rumour has it Denel has been sniffing around.
Interesting! It started in the early 60s with the R1, their FN version. There were at least 2 serving Saffas who could've filled us in but it seens they've left us.

Edit: the AR 15 style is really popular; must be the modularity. I've even seen an AK/AR 15 hybrid !

Turkey is protecting its borders by sending in ISIS affiliates and head choppers ?

After Turkey wins what are these head choppers going to do ?

Retire or head to next closet area which needs liberating or in your words provide protection.

Tension between newly re-elected Jubaland state government and Somali's central Government seem to have escalated to a new level today, Reports coming in say SNA (Somali National Army) has launched an attack on Jubaland army positions near the Kenyan border town of Mandera.

Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Stargate254:
This whole situation is about Mogadishu government seeking to control Jubaland autonomous region...
But the current events that are happening today, started with when Mogadishu government arrested Jubaland Security Minister Adirashid janan for Human rights Violations (whether true or not ) six months ago Just before Jubaland held its elections.
Somehow he escaped from a Somali National Intelligence Prison in Mogadishu and went on the run, Mogadishu then issued an Interpol arrest warrant.... He eventually sought refuge in Mandera town in Kenya where he stayed at a hotel and Kenya was now in a real dilemma between complying with Mogadishu or Keeping the Jubaland government happy (Jubaland president (who fought alongside KDF) is accusing Mogadishu of trying to overthrow him and his govt). on getting wind of the news, SNA then camped at the town of Bula Hawo which sits on the Somalia side of the border in Mandera waiting to capture him if he crossed back to Somalia. They have been camping at the town for the last 30 days. And today, SNA eventually decided to escalate the situation by attacking Jubaland forces at the town. The Jubaland forces were probably also waiting for their minister to cross back so the can defend him and take him back to Kismayu.

Facing superior firepower from SNA who were using technicals, About 30 Jubaland Forces have fled on foot and sought refuge in the Kenyan side of the town, they are currently being held(more like hosted) at the Mandera police Station by Kenya's Administration Police.

I wonder why the SF's in Nigeria often show their faces on camera, if you look at some of these Western guys, they often cover their faces.
I mean, is there any SF group in the country right now whose faces aren't publicly known, and how is that good for operations

What happened to the border wall? It is foreseeable that a stable Somalia will one instigate a referendum in the northern part of Kenya for them to join

I remember when KDF was going to Somalia, I was a little exited but I also wondered on twitter, about what happens if we succeed knowing very well that most Somali's have grievances with either Kenya or Ethiopia. Historically speaking, if Somalia is not at war with itself, they are at war with someone else....
Even Alshabaab who are enemies with Somali government, but what they are doing in Kenya's former NEP along the border is something that has been a dream of Somalia even during the Shifta war days. They are attacking school teachers, businessmen, medical workers and the one University found in that region.... and Killing the Christians.... All in the attempts to make sure the North Eastern part of Kenya remains poor economically but also that this part of the country doesn't become cosmopolitan. (If the region becomes cosmopolitan it would make it very difficult to unify the people in this region )

Ethiopia went to War with Somalia because of this, Somalia wedged a Gorilla warfare on Kenya because of this. And now Alshabaab is attempting to keep the area free of 'non-locals' (Logic would dictate its because of the same thing) i.e .... for one day to create the "Greater Somalia" as one united country.
But, you can't create a 'greater Somalia' if Kenyan-Somalis are happy, have schools, universities, good hospitals and are better off economically.. So what do you do in the mean time.... undermine any efforts by local governments and National governments to bringing any kind of progress in the region.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/Somali_map.jpg

So it wouldn't be a wild exaggeration to Imagine once Somali stabilizes and is free of Alshabaab, Somali government would turn their attention back to this good old grievance and settle some old scores.....

I mean just a few days before this incident, Somalia's Ambassador to the UN went on a rant at the UN Security Council That we were encroaching on their border among other things, then a few days later they start fighting just a few meters from the Kenyan border... It seems to me that this was a well choreographed incident that they were hoping would give them the pretext to justify whatever they'll do next. Maybe they were hoping KDF across the border who were not part of AMISOM would have crossed the border and helped Jubaland army.. This would have given them all the ammunition for them to say, "see, we told you"

What Somali's ambasador to the UN said at the UNSC
"Kenya continues to be a destabilizing force for Somalia. Kenya’s continuous encroachment into Somalia’s border areas outrightly undermines our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he told the UN Security Council sitting on Thursday, referring to the border squabbles.
“If these aforementioned actions do not immediately cease, we will invoke United Nations Charter, Article 35, and bring our case against Kenya’s breach of our sovereignty … to the UN Security Council.”
The said article allows a member state to bring any dispute or situation likely to endanger the international security, to the attention of the council.

Kenya has written a letter of protest to Somalia following what Somalia ambassador to the UN said

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has written a protest note to Mogadishu in response to a statement issued on Friday by Somali Ambassador to the UN, Abukar Dahir Osman, who said Nairobi was destabilising his country.

"Kenya rejects the unwarranted and invalid allegations made by the Federal Government of Somalia and takes great exception to the fabricated indictments of interfering in Somalia’s internal affairs," Nairobi's protest note, seen by the Nation, said.
"These baseless accusations are part of a growing and persistent pattern of ill intent to use Kenya as a scapegoat and tool to justify unfulfilled legitimate and social demands in Somalia and for political mileage.
"Kenya will not accept to be used in that manner and encourages the Federal Government of Somalia to stop the campaign and use the energy to deliver leadership to their people."

Air Superiority really is what determines the outcome of a war, They destroyed 103 Tanks from the air, Most African countries have Tanks ranging that number, if the were to fight an adversary with superior air power, they would be sitting ducks right now waiting for land forces to invade and finish them off.

On the details of the operation, Akar said a drone, eight helicopters, 103 tanks, 19 armored personnel carriers, 72 cannons/howitzers/multiple rocket launchers, three air-defense systems, 15 anti-tanks/mortars, 56 armored vehicles, nine ammunition depots and 2,000 regime soldiers and elements have been neutralized so far.
