Almost every PhD is funded in the US, why so particular in the UK?

I guess that's because the specific research he wants to do can only be done there in that particular university.

When you apply for a PhD, you are also hoping a specific supervisor would take an interest in your project and hopefully there would be space in the school for you. Applying again to any US university might take a long time...as he may have to find an actual university where he can do his project.

I also suspect OP has found his funding....and the funding has to be spent in that particular university.(though from the way he is talking, he may not have found it yet)

Hello everyone - I'm not quite sure whether this is the right section to post this.

Anyways, I currently hold a Master's degree and I also recently gained admission into a PhD program in a UK university but with no funding from the school and the estimated total cost of the tuition and living expenses amount to about #16 million for the 3 years.

So, I decided to come seek the opinion of folks here with better experience if it really worth spending this amount in the long run or should I rather invest this amount?

Thank you in advance!

If it is a STEM course and you are very good academically and intend to stay in Europe or developed world, then good to go. But if you intend to come back to Nigeria, please forget the idea

if it is not STEM course, please don't waste your money. More over, get attached with a seasoned professor to carry out research on topical issues.

Some seasoned Professors get funding and grants and take good PH.D students to work with them. Try and always publish in a learned journal

OP, you have to go back to your drawing board and do your calculation again, so you don’t make a very hasty decision, and get stuck in your second year.

Since you already admit there’s no funding from your Uni, there is NO WAY 16M would be enough for the 36 months of your research (Tuition fee and living expenses). I haven’t added conferences, symposium and seminars which you must attend as a PhD student. And I won’t advice you to actively work (that is depend on 20hours/week) to pay your rent and others, because, trust me, it’ll affect your research!

Your annual tuition won’t be less than £12,000 and living expense about £8,000, which will rise if you stay in London. So you’re looking at £20,000 per academic year.

16M is about £35,000, which means by your second year you’ll be stranded if you don’t get support from your school?

My thoughts exactly 16 million will not even be enough

As someone with a London Master degree from one of the leading university in the World and a PhD from Germany, I can tell you upfront that it ain't worth it. There, I said it. I consider the tuition and accompanying expenses for PhD degrees in the UK highly exploitative and no one should ever have to pay for a PhD degree.

You would ask me why. PhD training isn't about you get a degree but is about you contributing effort, time and lota lota pain to solving a human problem. PhD training is more an employment that it is schooling. The more reason I so much respect countries that pay PhD candidates monthly salaries/stipendum. My PhD in Germany I was receiving a monthly salary of about 1,700 euro after all taxes and deductions.

Getting a position like this in Germany, The Netherlands, etc is very competitive but you should insist on being fairly paid for your effort during your PhD training. No matter how long it takes for you to get such a position, well except you are not good enough for the openings (no pun intended here, just stating the obvious).

Plus, no matter how much you spend on getting an overpriced PhD, employment after the degree is never guaranteed.

UK exploits people in this regards, don't waste your money on a UK degree which is arguably not as good as what you get from countries like Germany.

Excellent analysis but he will be able to commit 8hrs per week to work after he must have settled in fully after his first year and augment the 16m. Alot of us did that while studying and that doesn't affect our research at all. Infact it helped us build work experience in am advanced work setting which is lacking back here in Naija.

Don't laugh, we don't have enough lecturers in this country...as this report from Vanguard put it

He said that 70,000 lecturers were needed at that time to serve the universities. “From available records, the system had 37,504 academics during the 2012 NEEDS assessment of universities sponsored by the federal government. “This is grossly inadequate as the system is in need of 100,000 personnel for academic workforce. “Out of the 37,504 lecturers in the system as at 2012, only 40 per cent of them had PhDs. “Today, we have more universities and this means that to actualise the mandate given to them (universities) and remain relevant, the system will need not less than 100,000 lecturers,’’ he said. According to him, the development is worrisome and calls for concern as it is a major threat to government’s quest for national transformation and development. “This is one thing we, as members of ASUU, have been engaging successive governments about. “Today, we have less than 40,000 lecturers in the entire university system, which is grossly inadequate. “There has not been provision for enough manpower over the years in tertiary institutions,’’ he said. The unionist recalled that at a time, even the National Universities Commission (NUC) also came up with an estimate of 60,000 lecturers needed for the university sector alone. He said that as that period, the country had less than 20,000 lecturers in the system. “This is made worse today with the proliferation of private universities in the country.

As a realist, I would say this: studying for the PhD should have a reason why and that justifies the intention. and 16 million is only an estimate. I spent over 20 million now. The UK educational system is very promising and encouraging and why the expense is overwhelming, the quality of education is second to non. Given that you are in line with your study, and with God on your side obviously, you can actually gain more after the completion of your study. Statistically, a lecturer earns at least £35k and above and the remuneration structure is fab! Now, if you don't intend to go into academia or research study, any employer will value your degree; it comes with a handsome package and a very well due respect. Alternatively, you can start your own firm because you will most definitely have an innovative idea during these 3 years programme undoubtedly,
For me, the money counts but contributing to the general body of knowledge is a bolster.

That sum won't be enough for a 3years programme which could shoot beyond 3years in some cases based on unique or mitigating circumstances. Remember if it's a science related discipline, u will need bench fees, and in some UK universities it is about £5,000 per year. You can give it a try though if you have a spouse who could join u while working full time to support you or if u can get a research assistant position in your Uni. Either ways, some European or Western universities could offer some partial funding for your programme which you can explore...if you are cut out for a future in research and academics, then give it a go, but u must begin to explore ur potentials for a long term stay in the UK, Europe or an advanced country, else you may not get a mega renumeration anywhere in Africa, except as a special consultant in a really big multinational or UN related agency.

As a Master's degree holder, if this is true, you do not need people here to advice you on this subject, unless you were not paying attention in school from the time you started your undergraduate studies through graduate school program! What will you gain with a PhD now? Not even the prestige of those days! Let's assume you already have the N16,000,000! Ask yourself what you can invest the money on in Nigeria and with proper management of your choosing business, you will be thankful in a few years for a good decision. PhD holders will be knocking at your office door for employment opportunities. You are already in doubt, looking at your question, so you know the answer to this one. Just my input.

While it’s good to pursue education, it would be fine to be honest with yourself on your end goal.

1. If your goal is to get a job, unless a very specialized field. its not worth it!. In fact, many employers won’t employ you with such a degree.

2. If your goal is to get lecturing job, you may want to look into other country that are less expensive - think Germany.

3. If your goal is to emigrate, UK is not your best option.

With that being said, you can get your PhD fully funded in the USA, try it or go to another country. And in all honesty, I think it would be kind of you to invest such amount than having to use such for PhD.

After school, you’ll need some money to start your life.

PS: this is coming from someone who spent close to 10m for MS in the USA and trying to break into job market after graduation.

An opportunity of a life time if you'll permit me.
Global exposure, world class environment, cutting edge knowledge etc are just some of the benefits you'll gain from this study.
However. my question is :how do you want to fund your tuition and living expenses?
What program are you interested in pursuing?
What are the underlying terms and conditions that come with your admission like extra fees etc
Have you factored in the recent devaluation of the Naira into your calculations?
Once you have solid and concrete answers to these questions. I think you can go ahead.
If not you should reevaluate your strategy and opt for a cheaper country in Europe or the Americas.
Cheers
