That person seeking a test right now is an unserious fellow. They are only testing those with symptoms such as fever, cough and body aches who may have been exposed to an infected person. There are very limited number of testing kits to go around, so yes of course screening is selective. Even in America and Europe, they are only testing people with symptoms, so why did your friend think he can just get tested like that?

My friend will you shut up and don't say what you don't know. Anybody can be tested upon request.

Without a national program of nationwide testing and tracing, there is no point in a lockdown. This is what I raised in my thread: https://www.nairaland.com/5760631/what-nigerias-covid-19-strategy-rationale

If you are only testing a handful of people, primarily the political elite, there is not much to gain from asking every Tom, Dick, and Harry to stay indoors.

What do you think Nigeria can do for you, we won't have it easy expect private companies come into the picture. It's a failed country.
Re: Trying To Get Tested For Coronavirus By NCDC In Abuja: An Experience by Caleb17: 10:59pm On Mar 29, 2020
What do you mean by limited number of testing kits? Why must our own be always limited? Where are the Billions donated?
Have snakes swallowed them as usual? We Nigerians are too stupid to a fault. Our neighborhood countries like Ghana have enough testing kits while we are still on garbage in garbage out. Thank God the virus paid a courtsey visit to aso rock when it landed if not our useless and hopeless leaders won't even give a damn..
JamParkMe:

You are a clown. So they should use up the limited number of donated testing kits to test healthy individuals at this early phase of the curve? When we reach the apex and have no kits to test those displaying symptoms, what will happen then? In fact by your logic, we should gather all 200 million citizens and start testing them.

Davido and his household that got tested, did they have any symptoms? Except they got tested in a private lab which we are not aware of, then you too are also unserious. As if you don't know the kind of Nigeria you are in again.

Absolutely. Restrict tasting to only those displaying symptoms while supply is limited and then once there are enough resting kits, ramp up testing. When while world is fighting and vying yo get their hands on the same limted supplies of testing kits, ventilators, N95 masks, gowns, etc. Think about that, there isn't an unlimited supply if this stuff neither is there a magic wand one can wave to make it available to all.
Didn't you hear that most cases are asymptomatic and they spread it the most?

There isn't an unlimited supply, but there should be a lot of it. Maybe not available to all, but available to most. The actual number of cases, hopefully, shouldn't have reached 5 figures yet. At this point, we still stand a good chance. If anyone feel they might have it, let them be tested. The government is not giving out incentives to its citizens like the countries you mentioned. Let them use all the money they would have otherwise used for that and the money they're getting to create and equip many testing centers now that it hasn't gotten out of hand ( hopefully).
If asymptomatic people are not getting tested, they will keep spreading and even those who were tested before and tested negative will eventually get infected.
Let's be wise.

I guess you've not heard of cases where the person does not show any symptoms or very mild symptoms but is infected and can infect others. It is not true that other countries are testing only those showing symptoms. Some countries quarantine you right from the airport and test you.

Most young people are carriers. So what would testing do in his case? How will it prevent him from spreading it? If you have no symptoms, no test for you, there's just not enough test in the world to test healthy unexposed people. Now if you have symptoms and test positive, they can give you some vitamin C and chloroquine, monitor you a bit and discharge you home to self isolate.

Believe nig govt at your own peril

Exactly my point.. They noticed the increase in the number of people infected with the virus, but did nothing until jack ma donates to the country testing kit.. This country immediately started evacuating their citizens.. Ask me why... Why? Because they do not trust Chinese to be good enough not to send the kits to Italy but Africa, u don't know we are simply black lab rats to them may God protect us,

And what difference will a positive test do for an individual who's asymptomatic? Will it stop the spread to those they have already come in contact with? Didn't the government ask everyone to remain indoors for this same reason, to maybe flatten the curve? Tell me how testing an asymptomatic person right now with limited supplies will improve the situation.

OP saying they are doing selective screening is right.
Is selective screening appropriate in this kind of situation? YES.

Should they use individual's economic or social status for screening? NO!

Why are they (NCDC) doing it this way?
I don't know.

Its simple for you to list what you think he should do but you've not been exposed or had to live with that fear. I see nothing wrong in what he has done and I appreciate his effort at unmasking just how f**ked up the whole system it. At the end, to each his own.
P.S, you don't really know what goes on when one is admitted. If it was that easy, most of the earlier cases would have been discharged by now.

What will it take them to explain to them the reason behind this...or perhaps calm them down by counseling them.

Coronavirus: A Facebook User’s Experience Of Getting Tested In Abuja

ATTENTION: PRESIDENCY & FED. MINISTRY OF HEALTH

To tell you the truth, NCDC can't do anything for you because they are not ready.
All this PR they are doing they are assuming people will not try that's why.
On Wednesday (25/03/2020) I and a colleague of mine decided we want to be sure of our status before going into #selfisolation.

So we went through the following steps

1. We called the toll free line and after all the normal recorded stories, when we chose to speak to an agent they end the call.

2. We went to University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, they told us they don't do testing there, that the hospital is only an isolation center. They refer us back to NCDC office in town, told us that's where testing lab is.

3. We drove to NCDC office at Jabi. There are two NCDC offices there in close proximity. The first office told us they don't do testing but they directed us to the second office saying that's where testing is handled.

4. The second office too absolved themselves of that responsibility and directed us to NCDC National Reference Laboratory, Gaduwa.

5. We visited the NCDC NRL. On getting there, the security at the gate informed us that a lot of people were there too earlier in the day and were turned away. That they don't do testing for individuals unless your state took your sample and submit to them.

6.They refer us to a circular posted at the gate and told us to contact the FCT Epidemiology team lead on COVID-19.

7. When I called him I introduced myself by name and then asked him if he's the FCT team lead on this issue. He answered yes. I then asked him how do I go about getting tested. He asked who are you? Who gave you my number? I told him I'm an Abuja resident and his number is on a circular at the NCDC office. He told us he doesn't know. He said we should go to NCDC. I told him but they referred us to you. He was silent. I then asked him to advise us. He told us to go to "National Health Disease Control" which doesn't exist.

I will send a copy of the circular to this forum.

Obviously they are doing selective testing which is dangerous.

It means a lot of people might have been infected already but for lack of testing they are moving about infecting others.

While the information from the official channels are saying people are not coming forth, the truth is that people are going but are been turned away.

And I know because I was turned away first hand.

It also tells you that either the NCDC are lying to us or they are not coordinated at all. How will you explain three branches of the office each denying responsibility and pointing us to the next instead of just explaining to us the laid down procedures by the NCDC

https://m.facebook.com/673827759324224/posts/3897292313644403/
it actually means that the corona virus is a hoax that's what you and many people don't get yet.
