You are still under probation of three month
Your appointment can be terminated any time even without a notice and here the company gave you one week in lieu.

It is assumed that your performance was not satisfactory enough

Some company won't even pay you they will give you sack letter .

I will advise you move on with your life and strenghten up your job hurt or strategy .

It is your luck ,the company did not make profit for that days you worked and you want a full salary you can't win in any litigation case.
May be you want to pay that full payment of March and the partof 36,000 to a lawyer

Oga, face the reality and pack yourself together, if you need to apply for another job you better prepare your cv and start pushing it out and if is to learn new thing. Nigeria is a lawless country, forget about all this questions you are asking, the company has decided and that is the final.
Best of God in your next phase.
Na wa o. The guy tire me.
Is the company Father Christmas, to be dashing him full salary, when the company itself is unable to make any money?

I always advise employees, if you have a good boss, stick with the company even if the company is toxic. Your good boss will always fight for you.

If you are in a good company but with a bad boss, you will regret your career.

Employees don't leave companies. They leave bad bosses.

I will pick good boss, bad company above bad boss, good company.

Your boss has a great role to play in your career progression.

Your current boss must have donated you for exit on the basis of LIFO - last in first out.

Hi Everyone,

I want to run this through this platform, perhaps I would get some useful input.

I switched companies in March. It was basically due to locations. I was doing fine at my former company. I moved to the latter one because it's close to my house and offered a little salary raise. Turned out it would be my worst career decision.

First week in April after the lockdown was announced, the company came up with a work from home policy which stated that staff were meant to work only Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Consequently, only 70 percent of basic salary (without the allowances) would be paid, and worse, computation would be made for only the number of days (I.e, 12 days a month).

We were assured it's just for the lockdown period, and that things would return to normal afterwards.

Surprisingly, by third week of April, about 90% of staff (including I) was laid off, giving us one week notice.

Yesterday, i got N36,000 from them as my salary for April. My agreed net salary before accepting their offer was N240,000, and that's what I got in March

Considering I'm being laid off, shouldn't they have at least paid the full salary for the month? I feel greatly cheated. Any advice, please?

Thank you.

Bro! Are you ok! They even tried to pay you something.
Employee are always selfish. Do you know if the company has broke even since they commence business or they are operating on loan. Now here come unplanned global pandemic that has melt down economies. I beg which company dey pay you 240k per month? Na oil company? Just move on, you can't do anything at the movement.

36k to 240k that's ridiculous...they could have at least paid half of ur net salary..
U know what...a lot of employers have gladly seized the opportunity to use this corona thing as a reason to exploit their workers...
To even think that u are on contract...they have no right to pay that money without first consulting and u appending your signature...
I still believe 95% companies should still be able to pay April salary without struggling at least half.....
Almost everybody na scam

In my own opinion - I may be wrong - a company's policy does not supercede the terms of employment. And as it is clearly stated in the Nigerian labour act, the company is required to either give you two weeks notice (if on probation), one month notice (if confirmed) OR one month salary payment (in lieu) if termination is immediate. I'd advise you to check your letter of employment again for the terms you signed.

After this, I'd also advise you - this worked for a friend - to approach a lawyer who will write a letter to the company. The law firm will most definitely ask for full payment of your salary and all its associated allowances from the said company, referencing the terms of agreement you have with them, failure in which a lawsuit will be filed. If the company fail to acknowledge or do something about it (in my friend's case, the salary was transferred to the designated salary account at about 6:00 AM a day after the company received the letter), the law firm may threaten a lawsuit worth millions with accrued interest and litigation expenses, this will be filed with the National Industrial Court (NIC).

I am 60% sure that the company will want to avoid litigation.

If I want to learn software programming, is it better I learn it online or go learn it in a center?
Like how much is needed to learn it in ikeja
Actually I av tried learning but I got bored of it learning it myself
Secondly, someone gave me access to a cloud storage, I can find how to learn digital market, seo and so many plus videos.
I prefer you learn it on your own. So that you wouldn't need to go to that center whenever you have an issue.
About you being bored, are you sure you are interested? If you are, then you have to chest that boredom if you want to learn coding.
Start with Python, then JavaScript.
You could go to the webmaster section on NL for more info. There are good programmers there who could help.

How I see it..... this is somewhat like a natural disaster. This sudden economic shut down was never anticipated. The shut down of the company is not the company's fault.... therefore they are not obligated to pay you your contracted salary. Whatever your loss in salary the FG should be making compensation since they are the ones responsible for the shut down. In the US.... the FG has done the same.... ordered most businesses closed with a whole lot of employees in the same situation as yours. The difference is ..... laid off workers can receive unemployment payments.... a fraction of your normal pay.... then the FG has made it possible for employers to get loans to pay their employees their normal salaries..... never mind they are not at work. At the end of COVID-19.... employers only need to prove that the loans were used to pay salaries and the loans would be cancelled/taken over by the FG. This is their palliative. Nigeria has agreed to the shut down..... without palliatives... so what are employers supposed to do when they are prevented from earning the money needed to afford contracted salaries?.I truly believe the contract as regards to salaries is null and void.

We are yet to see the full effect of covid 19, so much doom and disaster await the world if a vaccine is not discovered in time.

Thank you for saying it as its.
Don't listen to any unreasonable comments.
The problem is real.
More people are experiencing the same problem.
More jobs will be lost.
It's going to take some time before the labour market will bounce back.

Forget about taking up your immediate former company.

I have noticed that private companies always want to cheat there staffs, i dont know why. I would have preferred they lay us off and pay us off.

I empathize with you. Paying salaries isn't easy, especially when income isn't happening for the company. Let's say I have N30m in my company account as a small private business, and my total staff salary is N5m/mo. What would you do if you were me, the owner of this company?

It is very painful to hear so much story about job losses in this trying time. To get another quick and lucrative job like that may be difficult during this time of deadly plague called covid 19. As touching the fight you want to put up to get justice might not be necessary due to possible further financial loss in legal battle and very slim chances of getting desired result. I will like to
suggest a polite dialogue approach. And if this does not work out, just console yourself and move with your life. Remember, when there is life there is hope.

There's nothing like that. The work from home policy was via email. My concern is shouldn't they have paid my full salary as agreed, considering that's what's on my contract? Can I take them up? If yes, how can I?
they shouldn’t pay u your full salary because your productivity for April was not the same for the month of March therefore low productivity= lower revenues = lower money to pay salaries. Just because you going into a company everyday doesn’t meant they have to pay you. Your pay is based on productivity not time

You are right but in times of emergencies like natural disasters, etc, laws do not count much. JCPENNEY went under and stopped paying wages the first week of locked down. Coca-Cola lay off some staff right from the start of locked down cos demand is largely affected. I am not making excuses for the company but being he is a new staff, you are the first to let go when company fall into difficult times. You can sue them but I doubt you going to win cos the lay off is not their fault either and they have little option. Companies are into business of making money and the moment they ain't making it, all hell is lose.
