This depends on the type of person accepting the money. Picking either option dosen't make one better or less. someone with an investment mindset will take the 5m and make good use of it in the short - middle term. His justification would be, that a bird in hand is better than two in the bush (100k job may not be there tomorrow) Whereas someone with same investment mindset won't mind taking up the 100k job, adjust his spending and in the longer term (i.e. beyond 5 years). His justification could be that having a lump sum of money may lead to bad decisions, so he rather works and earns overtime. Hmmm. I worked for almost 6 years as a graduate before seeing the light of self employment. The only but here is whether OP's friend has any entrepreneurial intelligence to appropriate the 5M. If yes, before the end of this year he will not only forever bid poverty goodbye but also better many people's lives. But if no, let him go for the 100K job and keep wasting his days on 8 to 5 because he will lavish the 5M and be worse than he was before receiving the bounty. I rest my case. It would take 4 years and about 2 months to make the 5M from the 100k salary. Meanwhile you might not even be able to account for the 100k at the end of the month because of expenses .
