Ya. There is a difference. You should rather be using 'good dusk' for 5pm and 'good evening' for 8pm and 'good night' for 10-12pm.

As for me, 'morning sir' all through.

Yes that's why Yoruba is above the English in this regard just like the Urhobos: Omamede=Good day, Omamurioke=Good morning, Omamu-ogheruvo=Good afternoon, Omamo-ophuovwo=Good evening etc.....

accquiittances between the hours of 5pm till you are parting ways are greeted good evening

parting ways with accquittances within same hour is goodnight.

starting a dinner or night outing you greet fine evening ma'am to ladies or Evening sir not good evening

u add "good" to formal outings in the evening or night accquittances

Be a fine gentleman know the rule of the game

That's the beauty of yoruba language..every language is rich in nigeria but Yoruba is very rich and quite comprehensive..

It think it has more to do with the relationship of activity than it does of the clock. Essentially good evening has a ring to it that shows amber, and says, 'I am still here, up and doing, not done for the day', while good night has a ring of finality and termination as someone closing down or being urged to give up on the day.

So I can say good night at 4, 5, 6pm to my staff because I will not be seeing them till the next morning but good evening to the door man at an almost midnight club crawl. I may even venture a goodnight to someone returning from a vigil at 4 in the morning and trying to get some shut eye. You certainly won't be saying good morning as he/she flops onto the bed.

Just like in culinary world where the terms breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper donot have universally accepted definitions, so are traditional clock face greetings.

All these are as result of scarcity of news these dayz.. So you guyz would just dish out anything for folks..

Technically, there's no difference.

Evening starts by 4:0 pm and ends by 9:0pm.
Saying good evening by 5 & 8 is right.

In English there is no difference but in some other languages there is.

For example, Yorubas distinguish between the two with the words Eku Irole and Ekaale.

No Language has a compete set of vocabulary for everything in the universe. That is why words are borrowed from other languages.
