A case of an independent oil company ill prepared for the task ahead, yet embarking on a project well beyond its capacity.

Cutting corners on a project of this magnitude and the result is there for all to see.

They should not only be fined by the authorising bodies, they should be blacklisted for years to come.

On the flip side, DPR is equally complicit in this whole debacle.

There's no way they weren't aware of available logistics, which led to this fire incident.

The fallout is a huge environmental disaster however, I'm not buying the whole fish contaminated story.

They were in a gas region when the blowout occurred, there would have been no fishing for miles while this was taking place, and it would have been adequately compensated for that period.

It's just another avenue to extract as much as they can from the irresponsible organisations involved.

Some of you people are very cruel in your comments towards the Niger Delta. Without that region, there is no GDP in this country as the demons in power have failed to diversify the economy. Do you think the oil companies just appear in the Niger Delta, the governors, councillors, kings all get a share of the monies and refuse to trickle the money down to the common man.

These same oil companies will behave ethically in Europe or America because there are stringent laws there. Nigeria is a corrupt nation and any crimes committed against the state can easily be overlooked if money exchanges hands.

What happened to the ogoni clean up? What are the spoke men of the region doing? They really need to be held accountable by their people who are also involved illegal bunkering. Also, those who claim to represent their people, claiming security contract from these oil company and doing nothing, but lavishly spend the money.
All these and many more contribute to the problems of the people living in these region. Their representative are just too greedy and self centered.

For those of us who are quick to blame everybody. First of all that is not an oil rig but a Jack up barge called Belletto. It caught fire at Escravos oil field belonging to Chevron and the fire did not involve any platform. Jack up barges are not used to transport crude oil and could not have been responsible for any crude oil spill.
