My boss even said she don't have money and that she is also borrowing money a school that makes over 5million in profit a term. Anyway have involve myself in Home and Online lessons. For home lesson I protect myself like going to the moon and for online videos pictures etc I charge 10-25k, depends on what you want. Plus number of days and class.

Some schools collect school fees in millions per child and pay teachers #70 000. Such schools if the proprietor isn't greedy can afford to pay staff for 2 years without blinking.

Those are the few schools that are still paying in Nigeria and they constitute less than 1% of the schools in the country

You need wisdom to strike a balance between getting your debts and maintaining a profitable population

We can't do online classes in my schools because many don't have the means (phone, laptop, Internet). Either something for all or nothing for all.

Not as if what you pay them is enough to feed not to talk of phone.

Oga, private school get levels oh,...... there are some that are paying, and will continue to pay for the next 6 Months if lockdown continues,....... Some are even having online classes with their students on Zoom and Microsoft Team. It's not enough to just teach in a school, knowing the capacity of the school is also important.
This period is a lesson, a hard lesson, for a lot of people, I can only hope that we get some wisdom out of the situation

Some can even afford to pay for 2 years giving online tutorial.

Stop jumping into conclusion please. I don't take alcohol and I have a wife I use my small salary on. I couldn't save because of family expenses and wify. But my eye don clear sha. After lockdown I'll be more proactive

private school teachers are the most unpredictable set of people, Dem go dey teach from schools to school dey collect salary disappear, so my style is you only get salary after 4wks of work...and I don't owe salary, no such thing as half pay.

What's your grouse? Are you a private school owner?

The thing is basically many school owners, just like an average Nigerian, are corrupt. Students pay per term. A term runs for 14 weeks at most. That's about 3months. The school gets what it needs to run itself as the students return and pay their fees.
What's in the bill? Tuition, Developmental fees, Sports fee, Extra lessons, Club levy, Stationery fee, School bus run, PTA levy etc

If all of these monies add up to 100k and you have 400 children, how much is that? Now you have 40 members of staff who are grossly underpaid, only about 10 or 12 (30%) of your staff earn up to a hundred thousand monthly. Invariably, if you make 40m every term, staff salary will be less than 12m every term.
Other expenses: fuel for school bus, bus maintenance, fuel for generator, NEPA bills, govt. charges, Wi-Fi, scanners and printers don't develop fault everyday, water pipes don't burst everyday, possibly you don't pay rents, give or take all of these cannot gulp the remaining 28m every term.

If any school owner will use Covid as an excuse not to pay or slash salaries, it's wickedness. It should be by May ending before complain starts cos April technically is part of 2nd term. Yes it's the Easter holiday month but a new term doesn't begin until the holidays are ended. As the pupils pay in mid January, it should cover whatever till April.

Daily (28 days) = 1785 naira

Per Hour (8am - 4pm ) = 223 naira

Depending on the nature of the job, Ur 1 hour is only worth coke and gala

What if you work in a school that pays you only ₦30,000 because of the recent increase in minimum wage and I know people that are paid ₦18,000 here in Asaba, Delta State.

One of my colleague told me once that he might be forced to kidnap and sell one of the rich kids because life in Asaba ain't easy. Thank God he later got a private security job that pays him ₦45,000 and he left.

Private practice needs to be looked into because employers are enslaving graduates of Educational background and exploiting the unemployment situation in the country.

Sometimes I don't blame teachers and the absurd things they get involved in not minding the ethics and code of the profession. In a school where a child is paying over ₦120,000 as school fees and a teacher is paid less than the minimum wage. Devil is constantly knocking at the door o.

Our case is different here, ever since the lock down began we have not been paid even a dime or reached by our employer to know how we are coping during this tough period.

Those of us that understand better how things work, is it proper that way? What are your thoughts on this? Share your experiences too-those of us in private sectors.

It is unfortunate that Nigerian Proprietors treat teachers as if they were slaves. For your information, many of our colleagues have not only been paid but also sacked from their jobs.
