I have so many AS female friends, they can fine sha; My female doctor friend comes to mind. We AA have nothing to fear then, oluwamae....... wink wink wink wink
Oga you have nothing to fear ONLY IF you marry AA too. But if as an AA you go marry AS, you have a 50% (fifty-fifty) chance your children will become AS, and your bloodline risks becoming tainted with the S allele genes. AA should only marry AA to avoid stories that touch (like this OP is saying) for your bloodline in future. An AS has a 50% chance to contaminate your AA bloodline, and once it happens, what is done is done, nothing can change it again.

Please this an advice to all AS genotype peeps. Especially the girls.

Whenever a guy shows interest in you and wants to strike a relationship, please the first thing you should enquire is his genotype. YES! It won't make you come across as desperate but will save you a lot of brouhaha in the future in case you decide to take things to the next level. Ask ask ask. Phew!

Some might say its not necessary or its too early to do so but I tell you its not. because you do not know the day the love will crawl up on you and then you want to have this fellow for keeps only to discover very late and then to let go becomes an issue and then you have to contend with a force driving you into obvious danger. Our emotions cannot be controlled as you don't know how and when it will metamorphose into the next level hence the need to pop the question before our emotions betray us.

My advise to every AS carriers. Do not lose hope.
Don't throw caution to the wind cos it might back fire and you would wish you never did.
Don't see your genotype as a barrier or limitation. In fact, we are healthier than AA carriers according to studies as we hardly suffer malaria. I might not be able to explain the science behind that now but its true. Do your research. So no cause for alarm as with the compatible genotype, we can have healthy babies and be free from stories that touch. grin

This is just my two cents. smiley

Shalom.
AS may not be prone to Maleria but to TYPHOID

Genotype is not the first thing I ask a guy cause I am an AA genotype, the first thing I ask a guy is his state of origin, then we can talk.
Let's talk

I am from one of these NC states

Op, you want make me and you enter d same trouser? AS healthier than AA? shocked
I doubt it o. I am genotype AA and group O and I can boldly tell you the last time I smelt malaria was 2010 2nd/3rd week fa.I don't use drugs and if you see pills for my mouth, n.a. Vitamin C i dey lick and that will be once or twice in a year or so.

As for the reason behind AS not been susceptible to malaria, someone already spoke about it but I will buttress on it. Quoting the person
''simply, the red cells dies before time thus the plasmodium doesn't survive such.'' .......that's why AS are immune to malaria.

N[b]ormal red blood cell has a life span of 120days before it dies naturally, and because AA has a normal red blood cell which is very rich in oxygen the cell lives longer hence, the plasmodium from the mosquito has enough time to mature, reproduce and circulate thru the system which will eventually result to malaria. But for AS, because it is a carrier cell, once it is infected with the malaria parasite, the presence of the parasite causes the red blood cell with defective haemoglobin to rupture prematurely making the plasmodium parasite not to be able to mature or replicate since it will need much oxygen to mature which the AS cannot offer. So how does this make AS healthier than AA? So Op com answer me before you see me at your door post early momo tomorrow. And above all, let God reign.

AS this As that . Too many fear how this one is AS or that one is AS and they should not marry. But the reality is that 1/3 of Nigerians have the AS trait and they turn out fine marrying another AS. Our forefather which many were AS did not even have time to think who have AS or who do not have As , they just marry. Enough with this fear factor , marry who you go marry.

You're right about our father's and grand fathers. [b]And that is why some of their wives born 12 and only 4 remains. And they call it Abiku because they lack the basic medical understanding. That's one huge challenge getting a spouse that ticks all the boxes for you. undecided.

The AA will come but with loads of error. The AS will come with so much niceness then boom! Incompatibility brouhaha will rear its ugly head. Its just tiring and stressful.
I tell you. Met very nice ladies then who jelled with me. Your thread is very relevant, because I had to start asking any potential lady for their genotype early..

You don't know. You just swallow propaganda and fear-mongering hook, line and sinker!
Truth is sickle cell conditions is probably a hoax. I have never met anybody with the condition, have you?
Even if it is a real disease it is no worse than many other conditions people are living with.

@ Topic/Original Poster,

The first thing I ask is are you married?

Genotype issues will only come up for me, when we both feel a connection and want an exclusive, committed relationship.

No be every man wey approach me or show interest, I go date or marry nah. Some relationships thrive better as friendships and not romantic ones.

I feel the need for sincere and authentic friendships more than romantic involvements.

Can't AS people marry without having children? They can adopt and damn whatever their family and friends, would think or say.

The kain mind wey I get for matters like these, is not the typical average mind I often see displayed on NL and IRL.
You don't know where anything will end.

You can think it will end in friendship, and then it develops into something more, is it then you will start asking for genotype?

If it is a guy you genuinely like at first, you should know where you want things to go, even before establishing connection. Not when connection has been established, then, someone's son will come and wail to us that he has a lady he wants to marry, but she is AS.

As an AS person, it should be the first question you ask. It is the responsible thing to do, so that you know how to define the relationship moving forward.
