Should I Resign From This Job? Pls Help Me by bigtimemugu(m): 12:40pm On Jun 14, 2020
Gudnoon Nairalanders, I have been working for a company for 35k per month for 12 months no increment. I have been promoted from one position to another without a payrise.

Late may this year my salary was increased to 50k with a whole lots of task, I work Monday to Sunday, 7.am to 7pm some times down to 9pm.

1st week of June a similar company based on recommendations invited me for an interview, they offer to pay me 120k, which I insisted on 150k, finally they agree to pay but when we went to the business place, it is a little beginning business that I have to grow from the scratch in an isolated area. I began to reason if I opt out of my present job and venture into this, how long will this payment last, if the business folds up, where will I start from?

In my present job it might take another 12 months before another increment but I can work there as long as I may wish to work cos it has job security.

Please advice me am confused and I have family with kids.

Guy, move already.

In the small business, apart from earning more, you are going to be learning the great skill of an entrepreneur. You will do more work and would be able to replicate what you learn in your own business when you start.

Your current job is a dead end.

In your current place of work, are you seeing small change or strictly the salary?

What he means is that you should expand your comfort zone. If you always do what you can do you will never be more than you are.You need to grow.

Is just the salary no attachment except that u might been given a house rent loan without interest, nothing more, there are people I meet there that have spent 6yrs some 8 -10 years ,their life has been stagnant no reasonable or remarkable progress, I have seen all of that ,I have equally seen some who resign to other places and later come back begging for reemployment, I will not like any thing that will make me leave and come back to them agian or stay jobless and watch my kids hungry and out of school.the new place I can grow it up as a production manager, raise an active team that will make things happen but what if the owner lost patient and decided to shutdown,

Life is full of risks. Prepare and take the risks. If actually you have been surviving with 35K, 35k jobs are not so difficult to find. I advice you take the new job paying 150k. Spend only 50k if possible (since you have been surviving with 35k - 50k). Save up 80k every month. In a short while, you would have saved up money that can help u start some biz, buy a job or keep u till you finf another in the event of the company folding. Pray about it and commit it into God's hand as well. Life is full of risk and not taking risk is even another risk on its own.
So, bottomline, go for the new job, save from the first month and be prepared for any eventuality.

Good afternoon Bigtimemugu - These are my few cents if you have not yet made a decision yet. It appears your present job takes a lot of your time but you would need to be very honest with yourself about your dissatisfaction on a particular job. You stated you have been promoted from one position to another which is a very good one which will look good on your C.V and will show you are a very competent staff to be saddled with higher responsibilities. Please don't always base the decision on money. The money will come eventually. Focus on your career growth and development. A prospective employer will respect you when they see you have been having a steady rise in your current employment which is a good pedestal to negotiate your desired salary. Don't be in a hurry to change job at just any opportunity that comes your way especially if you have not convinced yourself to take the offer but target an employer that will help your career growth trajectory. Exercise a little patience. It will pay-off.

Good day brother, please be honest with yourself and answer the following questions.

Are you sure that the new salary is not a click bait that would be reverted after some months?

Are you sure that the organisation can conveniently pay that amount as a start up?
Is the organisation self sustainable for the first 5 months?

If you can answer the above questions, your problem is solved.

Bro quit this fear of the unknown! You are afraid of change; which is, by the way constant. I will advise you pick up that offer and start saving up for to start your own business. Your 7-7 job is not sustainable no matter how stable it’s looking now.

Look for a way to get info about the new place, be sure they don't delay salaries, or pay for a month after working for two.

The thing is nothing is known, even in ur present place of work

If there is a way you can ask for a leave, afterall you have been consistent, look for a genuine reason to take a month leave and go get first hand impression at the new place.

Mind you, some companies may do well in the first few months just to settle the minds of new employees only to change afterwards.

Another thing is, try asking for an increase in your present place of work.

My brother, in the end, the choice is yours make, weigh your options and think through carefully.

I trust you to make the best decision

Cheers

It is a very tight decision to make because of the fear of uncertainty and the responsibility at hand... My current job pays me 35k since two years now and takes my time too....but am not the case study here....
Truthfully speaking, I would have said why the rush..they have increased it to 50k now..why don't you chill till you get a better offer that guarantee job security then you move...for now,you can't risk it..Am single I can risk it...you can't becos you have responsibility.. let's us be real here! calculated risk is profitable..not just taking risk...I knw the pain of having to work 7-7 and Monday-sunday with just a day off....your social life is ZERO.. you cant run a side business, you can't further etc..so bottom line is stay a little more and save a little more..better opportunities will come...ONLY If deep down you are sure of atleast 3months stability of ur so called 150k then u should follow what my brother @esknyNelson said..valid point he raised.

Thanks to all of you who take their time to advise me, it shall be well with you all, candid advice will always come your ways. I put a call to our accountant few hours ago asking if I can apply for annual leave since am due for it, this is to give me a space to checkout the new place, although the leave is just 14days, she said am due but the operations manager instructed her to monetize annual leave of some key staff which I happen to be among the list ,it pains me so much cos i belong to those list only when it come to duty ,but in payroll am far behind, am finding it very tough to decide , a bird at hand they say ...... But 150k will take me 3months here, and my savings @ 150 for 3 months might take me 12months here, pls more advice my people.

If you don't take RISK has advised, you would be stagnant forever. You compare yourself to others that left and came back. Stop that and face your own life. Don't run your race with anyone. Run yours at your own pace.

Risk is risk. Take it and be a man. If it's positive, you win and if otherwise, you learn. It's something we must do sometimes in life. A man who doesn't take risk will forever remain a coward.

Baba you have a phobia for failure and it is normal u do
When I left my previous job to the current one am in now, many thought kept coming to my mind
Like
1. What if I don't like the environment?
2. How do I cope with a strict and bossy boss?
3. What if I don't like it in my new place?
4. What If my new colleagues don't like me or I don't like them?
5. What if! What if?? What if??.?

Fvck what if. I took the decision move to my new, and that the best decision I have taken.
I have my Saturday and Sunday to my self, I go on leave 30 days every year, and promotion is fast unlike my previous place where I have to go to work on Saturday and you can't even go on a 2 days casual leave.

You better leave that place before the offer slips outa ya hand, dem no bury ya placenta there
Cheers cool

You should seriously consider the fear of the unknown.
You also need to consider the chances of survival of the new place of work. Like someone said, you have responsibilities and should not gamble the way a single guy would.
I'm currently in this same scenario and I'll advice you do some real thinking, and not just rush to the new job

If I should put myself in your shoe.. I'll leave the previous job and suit up with the newly duty, from 50k to 150, that's alot of money and for u to be working round oclock with 50k and I believe u will definitely find a space to have some savings out of it.. so why don't u leave that previous job and move with the new one. If u can survive with 50k in a month. I believe u can save up to 100k in a month with the new job. Pop. then u can think of what do with your savings if evetually the newly job close down as u predict

No stay there since Na your papa company.

Baba, Owonikoko!!
As far as you're an employee, always go for where you'll earn better. Forget all those company folding up thing. How about they sacking you? Abi you think you're indispensable..?
If you plan yourself well, you shouldn't even be working in one place for more than 5 years.

You should be constantly moving from one organization to the other and from one rank up to another and also up the pay grade.

Hmmm personally I'll advice you to quit the current job and move to that if 150k per month. After all, it wasn't like you were told that the 150k payment will be conditional I.e, will only be paid if you're growing the business monthly.. All you need do is focus on doing your own job diligently and earn your pay. While earning, try as much as possible to save up some funds, say like 50k every month just in case the business ends up folding up just like you fear it might. With the savings, you will have something to fall back to and probably start a business for yourself... Good luck

A biz coming up is even the best place to work as a young man because you have the opportunity to try out many things and gain experience in different departments.

Do you know what it means to say that you were a pioneer manager of a biz? That dwarfs any experience.

I don't know about you but I love to the at the war front not hiding cowardly at the back. This is a new experience, with a better pay grab it!!

If it doesn't end well, like every soldier, you live to fight another day.

What is fear of the unknown? Do you think the Russians knew what was in space when they launched or you think Neil Armstrong knew what lay beyond the sky before he set his foot on the moon?

No guts, no glory.
