CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE


He parked right in front of her shop and got down. "Exclusive Fashion Home" he muttered, before walking into the shop. Five girls were busy with their work as the sound of rolling sewing machine filled the air. One of the girls looked up at him and gasped in shock while tapping the other girls who had the same look on their faces.


"Brother Daniel" one of the girls called out in shock and ran into a small cubicle in the shop. Almost immediately, she came out with Bari who was already shaking like a leaf.


"Hello" he muttered to Bari whose facial expression had turned from shock to surprise. He squinted his eyes at her hair, even though she had covered her hair with a shawl at the funeral, he was sure she wasn't on low cut.


"It's you? please have a seat" Bari told him with a sigh, then turned to the girls "He is not Daniel. He is David, Daniel's twin" she gave them a reassuring smile. They nodded their heads and went back to work.


"Am sorry, i gave you guys a scare, but i needed to see you and discuss an important issue with you" David said, after he had sat down.


"Okay, first of all, how did you find me?" Bari asked, sitting adjacent to him.


"I have my way" he replied with a nod "What happened to your hair?" he asked.


"Oh, my hair? I cut it, i was getting tired of it anyway" she replied.


"Okay" he shrugged. He knew she was acting like it was the end of the world for her, but then he didn't want to interfere.


"You said you wanted to talk to me about something?" she asked.


"Yes, it is about Daniel's death actually"


"What about it?" Bari asked.


"When you visited the morgue, did the morgue attendant give you any belongings of my brother?" he asked.


"No, not at all. I was too shocked to even ask him anything" she shook her head sideways.


"How long were you with Daniel before he died?"


"About a month plus. We had just started dating before tragedy struck" she replied, groggily.


"Do you know if he had any enemy? like someone that wanted him dead?" he probe further.


"No, not at all, none that i know of" she replied. David smiled and stretched his fingers.


"Why are you smiling?" Bari asked, confused.


"I don't really know if it was Daniel's body that was buried or not, but what am Too sure about is that, it wasn't an accident but murder" he rested his back fully on the chair.


"Murder? how?"


"Okay, look at this" he said, bringing out a few pictures from a big brown envelope. "Before the accident, two things happened, his car was bashed from behind and the two back tyres were deflated with nothing other than a gun shot. An accident doesn't have a connection with gunshots, so that brings me to the question of "who is the murderer" he concluded, shifting the pictures to Bari.


She hurriedly took the pictures and stared. In the first picture, a half burnt car was captured, just the back of the car was in view because the front was burnt completely. The booth of the car looked bashed. In the second picture, the two back tyres had small holes on them. She looked up at David, her mouth opened in shock.


"Fortunately, the fire was put out before the entire car got burnt" he muttered, when he saw the surprised look on her face.


"How did you get all these? who are you?" she asked.


"Am a detective" he stood up and stretched his hand out, towards Bari, for a handshake. "Am detective David Larabee, and i am on a hunt for my brother's killer" he added.













NAZE IMO STATE


Paulina watched the neighborhood kids as they bickere and chattered noisily. There were about four boys, who would be around 15 years of age, shirtless, playing in front of the flat next to hers. They banter happily like humans without worries or troubles.


"I want to be a Medical doctor when i grow up" one of the boys spoke up.


"I want to be a Lawyer" the second person giggled happily.


"I want to become an Engineer" the third boy spurred.


"Mine is Pastor. I want to be a Pastor" the fourth kid shouted. They laughed and hailed him "Pastor Ekene, Pastor Ekene"


"What of you, Promise? you have been quite since we started sharing our future dreams" one of them asked.


"I want to be a Yahoo boy. I heard they are always Rich and they drive fine fine cars" he muttered.


"Police will catch you ooo" one of them shouted.


Paulina scoffed and looked away, towards the gate, a woman entered the compound with a sac bag on her head. "Here comes the poke noser" Paulina hissed.


"Neighbor, how you dey na?" the woman asked when she got close to Paulina.


"Am fine, how was today?" Paulina asked.


"Today was fine, we thank God. This one you are at home today?"


"I came to make food for my husband. I will soon leave for the hospital" Paulina replied, hoping she would go away and stop asking plenty questions.


"How is he? I hope he is getting better?" she asked again.


"Yes, he is. The doctor said he will be discharged soon"


"Thank God. Let me go now, we will talk later. Greet your husband for me" she said, walking to her flat.


"Okay" Paulina replied, then scoffed "What will i tell my husband? honey, the tatafo that stays in our compound said i should greet you ooo" she chuckled.


There were five flats in the compound. Paulina and her husband stayed in the first flat. An unmarried corper lived in the second flat, just beside Paulina, while Mama Chinwe, who Paulina had named Tatafo, stayed in the third. The fourth flat was vacant and the last flat was occupied by a man and his wife, with three kids. When Paulina and her husband moved into the compound, mama Chinwe had told her about everybody in the compound, how the woman in the last flat had been the bread winner of the family since her husband became jobless. Since then, Paulina decided to avoid her and her gossips. She stood up and went inside.
