That dividend is already priced in. It can only move price of companies without interim dividend history if they decide to surprise the market.
I don't think dividend is priced in, GTB may move up to 23.

If you bought Zenith bank on 01/01/2010 using N100,000 and reinvested all dividends received to buy more zenith bank shares on 01/04 each year, how much would your investment be worth as at 01/04/2020?

Great but before we can draw a conclusion on whether the said investment was worthwhile, we need to benchmark it against similar natural investment plays adjusting for risk.
…a brief;

Assuming u were to put that money(N100,000) in a different investment platform in 2010, and held on until 2020, would u have faired better?
…put differently, could u have derived a higher Real Return than N238,354(future value-invested capital) in another investment play than Zenith bank in 10 yrs?
To query this, we need to compute the FUTURE VALUE of that N100,000 initial invested capital playing in the fixed income space(say T-bills) and continuously compounded, to see how it compares to that N238,354 real return from playing the asset- Zenith bank.
Mathematically, the future value with continuous compounding FVw/cc= PV(e)rt
Given the data u provided;
Present value PV= N100,000
We use a discount rate relative to the interest rate in the last 10 yrs. …and if we do that, we should have an average that computes to just above 10%. So we peg r= 10% or 0.1
t =10(10 yrs), while e is the Euler’s constant
Therefore FVw/cc= 100,000(e)0.1x10
...which will be approx N271,828.2.
Hence Real return going by this will be N171,282.2… which is a N67,071.8 shortfall when compared to playing the Zenith bank asset.(N238,354- N171,282.2)

My further estimates also reveal that if one had invested that initial N100,000 capital in other instruments(bonds, mutual funds etc), FVw/cc would’ve still been less, so Real return would also peg at a shortfall from that of investing in Zenith bank.
…in fact the latter play(mutual fund) would’ve been lower than that cited above.

VERDICT: While the Real return from playing the Zenith Bank asset may not have been that juicy, it is still BETTER OFF than playing other assets for the most part.
There is a reason why the equity mkt space is about one of the best investment platform in delivering VALUE !!
...but u have to permute from among the RIGHT coys to achieve that VALUE though.

The real challenge here is with the larger economy. …Top-down view to equity investment often deviates away from the bottom-up view, leaving a wide disconnect/margin between the market price and FVE of most assets.
This explains why u see many assets with higher feasible yield/RR(MoS to FVE in view), but lower PEs.
...that's basically telling u that investors attach a higher degree of skepticism(risk premium) looking into the future.

Nigeria is the problem… not Zenith bank !!

That's why holding any stock for ever mindlessly does not make sense. Once the market prices your stock higher than your valuation, why hold on to it? You can sell and buy back later.

Imagine those that sold Zenith at close to N40/share in early 2018 and buying back now. Compare them to those taking N2.50k profit every year since then. Who is better off?

Well said.
An appropriate EXIT STRATEGY proceeding the RIGHT ENTRY price is pivotal to growing ones REAL RETURN over time.
...this is KEY !!

Like I always tell folks;
"In the stock market world, the real winners are those who can prioritize their TRADE SETUP ahead of the ASSET PROFILE and a little more than the quest for REWARD.
...without the 1st, the other 2 can engage in more "fight" but also concede more victories to the market"

Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by onegentleguy: 1:33pm On Jul 20, 2020
CashDiMkpa:

This is entirely up to you and how you want to play in the market.

Before you buy a stock you must have done your valuation to know if its over priced at current price level. Assume you valued "Stock A" at N5 in January 2020 but it was trading at N8 and you considered that price too high and decide to wait. Eventually, in March 2020 the market prices it at N3.50 and to you the fundamental are still the same. You buy at N3.50 and suddenly in May 2020 the market decides that the price is now N6.00. You look at the fundamentals again and its still okay and your valuation sheet shows the stock should still not be worth more than N5.00.

What will you do?

U immediately SELL/EXIT from the said asset !!
Now let me tell us why.
From ur question, we can derive the following:

SCENARIO 1 …In Jan 2020;
Mkt price of asset = N8
FVE= N5
So RRM= 60% deviation towards risk(3/5 x100)… Negative ROI… Negative Real return(-(3+effective inflation rate)), so u just had to wait !!

SCENARIO 2 …In march 2020;
Mkt price of asset= N3.5
FVE still= N5
So RRM= 30% deviation towards reward(1.5/5 x100)… feasible positive ROI and Real return, so u bought.
Though personally, I wouldn’t have bought here… given the smaller band of MoS.(FVE to price)
The only exemption is if the TA of the said asset suggest otherwise.

SCENERIO 3 …In May 2020;
Mkt price adjusted higher to N6
FVE now N5+
RRM assuming an equilibrium(zero yield(i.e 6-5+)/6 x100)… Marginal ROI but POSSIBLE Negative Real return. …so u’ll be better off exiting the asset at this time.

Takeaway…
The KEY is to always keep track of the RRM.(Risk-Reward Margin)
U BUY as RISK deviates further down from REWARD and sell as RISK closes in on, surpasses or runs at a faster pace than REWARD raking-off cost.(surrounding/inflationary risk and tnx cost)

If I may ask, why the Eular?

I though for compound interest this formula applies:

100,000 x (1 + 0.1) x (1 + 0.1) x (1 + 0.1) ... x (1 + 0.1) ten times over or 100,000 x (1 + 0.1) ^ 10 = 259,374 applies.

In 10 years, if you sold into every bull market and bought into every bear market and compounded 50% of your dividend since then, I'm sure you'd be better off on the NSE even the NSE.
Problem has always been buying when we should be selling and selling when we should be buying and compounding the problem with buying crap (loss making, no dividend coys)

Well spoken, but then again, it can sometimes be an "unfruitful mission" to seek to consistently time the market.
The KEY is; whether its a BULL or BEAR mkt, just have a STRATEGY that syncs with ur investment personality(risk tolerance in view) and goals, then allow matters to be guided by the trend/mkt sentiment at any given time.

...ceteris paribus, u should be just fine !!

There is a time for everything. A time to rise and a time to fall. When it is time to rise, even if there economy is in shambles, it will keep rising.

In 2016, oil was down to $27, Nigeria was in recession, yet the stock market rose till 2018.

Like 2018 to 2019 ending, even with banks churning out better fundamentals than previous years and paying good dividends, it kept falling.

And this was the same leadership manning the ship.

We have eyes but we don't see. We hardly invest in rigorous research to understand the 'why' of things.

I recently registered for this course on coursera platform. I am impressed so far, combining finance and python. I think the course will be a little hard if you don't have a basic background in programming.

I wonder howmuch it will cost to obtain historical data from NSE, I think I saw something like that on the website a few months back? I am seriously searching for that link.

Am not sure if it's the normal loan type. But its part of the #100B CBN intervention fund earlier in the year structured for the healthcare system as a whole.

I know of Fidson that recieved #2.5B to help expand their new production facility.

I agree with you if you in live in Nigeria and invest naira and spend naira.

Remember that some people don't live in Nigeria. Some live in Japan for example and invest in Nigeria. In Japan, inflation had been jumping from negative to around +1% for years.

The only thing such an investor will be concerned about is devaluation of naira. Nothing concern am with inflation in naira because he is not spending whatever he gets there in Nigeria.

Just my thought.

...and ur thought is very much in order !! wink cheesy grin
For such an investor, the discount rate will be the interest rate in his country of residence and Fx mkt dynamics at his investment destination.

I use Afri invest stock broking firm and no one offers me private placement to be pioneer investors on them platforms, Any other platforms that offers to private investors

...and u think that if a private firm/company with huge growth prospect were looking for funding, they would come ur way? wink cheesy grin
Oftentimes(over 88% of the time), such firms/coys have HNIs, DPIs, IBs, BANKS, FPIs, including that on vested interest from politicians and their cronies that they go to for money and other business related interest. ...and these are players with all the connections, so such fund-seekers will seldom remember u and I.
My dear there is a lot of money, so much money in this country waiting for such opportunity. ...money with the right connections !!

Telecommunication is a sector I play in. ...and talking about MTN, I know of a man(from the eastern part of the country) who bought some stake during the 1st private placement and now enjoying huge dividends from the said investment.
Though like a few others, he was an MTN TP, but he was mainly able to KEY in at the time because of his strong connections both in-house and externally.
There were some other TPs who weren't able to BUY into that private placement then.

Most fund seekers will usually come to u(via additional PPs or PO/IPO) when such offers have been "maneuvered" to price at a premium to what should've been their FV. wink cheesy grin
