Still on the Turkish Cup final... It seems Nwakaeme won't be the only Nigerian on show.

Ndidi's 19/20 season: A success or failure?

Has Leicester City’s botched attempt to secure Champions League football soiled what was another impressive year for the evolving Nigerian anchorman?

Without question, Leicester City’s final standing had a ‘What might have been?’ feel to it, owing to how they had looked to have secured a Champions League spot at the halfway point of the campaign.

Indeed, the fact they were 11 points above Manchester United in eighth after 19 games only to end in fifth four points adrift of the Red Devils amplifies their collapse at the end of the extended 2019/20 season.

Even though the Foxes made the semi-final of the League Cup, quarter-final of the FA Cup, scored more goals and conceded fewer this season compared to 18/19, had their first Premier League Golden Boot winner in Jamie Vardy and will be playing in Europe next season, there’s a hint of sadness at how they unravelled since the turn of the year.

There’s an argument that Brendan Rodgers’ side would have taken fifth spot had it been offered to them a year ago, still, given the prolific nature of their start, preseason expectations were probably adjusted following a strong opening to the campaign.

While many continue to mull over the glass half-full or glass half-empty appraisal, the improving Wilfred Ndidi will undoubtedly be pleased with his season, which continued his progression as an all-round midfielder.

Given the 23-year-old arrived from Genk practically as a ball winner capable of scoring the odd cracker, his development since January 2017 has been outstanding.

Unsurprisingly, as has been the case in the two preceding seasons, Ndidi was the top tackler in the division, along with Man United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka with 129. In 17/18 and 18/19, that figure was 138 and 143 respectively.

What makes this year’s volume all the more impressive is because he registered this many retrievals despite the team's shift in style, which was highlighted by the increase in Leicester’s average possession.

In the Nigerian’s first full season, the Foxes' average possession was 48 percent and it just barely crossed the halfway mark last year. However, Rodgers’ troops had a mean of 57.5 percent this year, the fourth-highest in the Premier League, and a major indicator of their change in approach.

Thus, it was hugely impressive that the West African still topped that metric regardless of the alteration of the team’s style in possession. Only Bournemouth’s Diego Rico (84) made more interceptions than Ndidi’s 80, with the anchorman’s reading of the game as sharp as ever.

Nevertheless, the pertinent indicator of the ex-Genk man’s improvement hasn’t been what he’s done without the ball alone, rather his adeptness in possession to match the brutishness in the middle of the park.

According to Fbref, the Nigeria international ranks fifth for passes made excluding dead-ball passes, higher than James Maddison, the side’s creative hub this season. In fairness, the Englishman’s injury towards the end of the campaign probably saw Ndidi edge him in the closing weeks but playing a high quantity of passes in the first place demonstrates his importance in the Foxes’ build-up.

He played 44.4 passes per game, the fourth-highest in the side and an accuracy of 85 percent was a commendable completion rate. Unsurprisingly, the Nigerian completed 87 percent of his attempted passes in Leicester’s half while the decrease to 83 percent in the opposition half was a respectable return.

For passes longer than 25 yards, the mere fact that Ndidi successfully found a teammate 304 times from 376 tries (81% success) showed not all these attempts were short, simple passes.

While he sits sixth for percentage success for long passes, only Caglar Soyuncu’s 555 completed passes from 659 efforts was significantly higher (no other colleague with a better completion rate crossed the 100-pass mark).

Furthermore, 138 passes by the 23-year-old defensive midfielder were directed into the final third, only Jonny Evans (144), Maddison (155) and Youri Tielemans (157) attempted more. While the Nigerian didn’t quite attempt as many progressive passes (74) he still sits a respectable eighth when compared with other teammates.

The aforementioned truly highlight the transformation of Ndidi into a more complete midfielder, who not only thrives in the defensive aspects but is now becoming an accomplished player in possession as well.

In truth, it is no surprise he led the way for most blocks (81) while successfully harrying the opponent on the ball more times than any other Leicester player, given that’s what he thrives at doing. The improving adeptness with the ball, however, is why the African is becoming one of the top rounded players in his position.

Indeed, Ndidi’s influence on their play was felt early on in the Foxes’ slump from mid-January to February where he missed five of six league games. Rodgers’ men won none of those fixtures with the 2-1 home defeat by Southampton the perfect representation of how much they lean on the Nigerian.

While he was involved in a few questionable moments post-lockdown – the concession of penalties in damaging defeats by Everton and Bournemouth, especially – the former was a contentious handball while the other originated from Kasper Schmeichel’s poor kick at the Vitality Stadium.

Without a doubt, Ndidi has come on in leaps and bounds since his Premier League debut against Chelsea in January 2017, refining his style to suit the team while not losing his blue-collar tendencies in the process.

The Nigerian anchorman will finally grace European football with Leicester next season, still, it’s a shame it won’t be the Champions League as the continent’s most prestigious competition is where his talent ought to be showcased and where the Foxes seemed destined for before their post-January decline.

Come to think of how Semi Ajayi got a chance in the SE and has never looked back. Eze and Adarabioyo will be massive additions. Even Onomah. I can remember Omeruo didn’t have a commanding presence in the Championship but still arguably our best CB in tournaments.

komekn:

Meanwhile they will say one is biased.

Now compare the obsessive fixation and over hype associated with Nwakali, who has done absolutely nothing for 5 years beyond U17 football.

Then l will be accused of favoritism towards Nigerian origin players in the UK.

It's hypocritical double-standard as well as unguarded prejudiced and negative bias towards Nigerian players not considered to be "homegrown" in the context of Nigerian football.

HALLELUYAH NDIDI IS GETTING MORE CREATIVE WITH THE BALL. I MEAN HIS LONG PASSES, PASSING ACCURACY AND PASSES INTO THE FINAL THIRD ARE IMPROVING.
If he can improve on his proficiency with the ball and creativity, i can guarantee with all certainty that big clubs will come for him

Again , get this into your mind. Nwakali is a Nigerian born and bred talent. He has privilege , rights and advantage Onomah enjoys in England. The English will not furnish Nwakali with these benefits. Henceforth , we will take care of our own, firstly.

He knew this already, just that it is too hard a pill for him to ingest.

By the way, I saw Colin Udoh's article on how foreign born players are now being approached, I had nothing but props for Pinnick. Sound him out just as you would every other Nigerian player, no special treatment, if he comes good, if he asks for more time, make him understand you ain't in for games, hence, you ain't coming back again for him, instead he should be the one to reach out to you when he must have made up his mind. And that the said player ain't gonna be taken just bkus he has reached out, the coaching crew are still gonna weigh him up(this is mandatory) to ensure he is still worth it.

If we had used this measure, that scam of a striker from New Castle, Shola Ameobi would not have made it to Brazil in 2014

Being in a top league does not automatically make you a top player. You can be anonymous and almost a spectator.

I would rather have the most outstanding consistent players in the Championship than a players in a moi moi team in La Liga who has done nothing and will do nothing.

Eze, Tega and Ovie are outstanding players in thier league.

You could add Iorfa and Adarabioyo to that list in the context of defence. And on the wing we have Osayi coming in to stake a claim.

Finally, Scottish Premiership league may have a low rating. however the club Rangers has a much much higher rating than Huesca in European club ratings.

If you have the time look at the players and value of Sunderland and Hulls players and compare to Huesca and you will see gap that will suprise. And these are essential league one clubs now.

Osayi is no threat to anybody in the present team, there's nothing he can offer that those we have can't. He's not better than Bonaventure let alone.

The 2019/20 league season has virtually rounded up in Europe and several Nigerian players have seen their stocks rise. As such, there are some new faces in the Nigeria’s most valuable XI, as well as some very familiar ones.

Complete Sports here put together the most valuable XI for Nigerian players abroad based on the latest evaluations by Transfermarkt.com with a formation of 4-2-1-3.

Surprisingly, some notable names were missing in the line-up despite their popularity in the Super Eagles while team’s total valuation is estimated to be a whooping €154 million…

Daniel AKPEYI, 32, (GK): €600Th.

Akpeyi remains the most criticised goalkeeper by Nigerian fans for his alleged lack of confidence in goal but the South Africa-based goalie remains Nigeria’s most valuable goalkeeper rating slightly ahead of his compatriot and rival, Francis Uzoho who is valued at €525Th. Having moved from Chippa United late last season, Akpeyi has gone on to become Kaizer Chief’s first choice goalkeeper and they currently lead the race to clinch the Premier Soccer League title.

Ola-Oluwa AINA, 23 (RB): €8.00m

The skillful defender has continued to pull his weight in the Italian Serie A with consistent display for Torino as a right wing-back across two seasons. He has featured in 60 Serie A games so far and he be looking to help Torino retain their Serie A status with just two rounds of matches to go. Aina has also grown to become a regular feature in the Eagles.

Chidozie AWAZIEM, 23 (CB) €6.00m

The versatile Eagles defender had a good outing playing 26 LaLiga games for Leganes on loan from Porto. He will however, be heading back to Portugal as Leganes were unable to retain their LaLiga status after narrowly losing out in the relegation dogfight on last day of the season. Awaziem profile is rising and he is gradually staking claim to a regular shirt in the Nigeria defense-line amidst top competition.

Semi AJAYI, 26 (CB) €4.00m

Ajayi featured prominently to help West Brom secure promotion from the highly competitive English Championship to the Premier League for next season. His consistent and solid displays in the Baggies defense where he played 43 Championship games and scoring 5 goals did not go unnoticed, as he has been nominated for the West Bromwich Albion Supporters’ Player of the Season award. He had of recent eased himself into the Eagles’ central defense position.

Jamilu COLLINS, 25, (LB) €2.40m

A regular player as a left wing-back for Paderborn who unfortunately got relegated from the German Bundesliga in only their first season in the topflight having secured promotion in the previous season. Collins featured prominently for the modest side scoring one goal in 30 Bundesliga appearances in the German topflight with a number of clubs already showing interest in the defender. He has now become a regular feature in the Eagles.

Wilfred NDIDI, 23, (DM) €36.00m

The Leicester City midfield warhorse is currently Nigeria’s most valuable player. Ndidi has been the Foxes backbone churning out solid and consistent performances since joining the side in 2016/17 season. He has 120 Premier League games under his boots across four seasons scoring 6 goals. Ndidi finished second both as EPL’s top tackler and best interceptions in the concluded season and remains Eagles topmost box-to-box midfielder too.

Oghenekaro ETEBO, 24, (CM) €4.00m

The power-playing midfielder has struggled to get into his rhythm this season for Stoke City and was shipped on loan to Getafe in the Spanish LaLiga where he showed glimpses of his quality scoring once in 10 games. Etebo is Minister Hints 2020 Sports Festival Could Still Hold Upon PTF’s both in the defensive or offensive midfield positions and he has remain a regular feature in the Eagles with his high work rate.

Samuel CHUKWUEZE, 21, (RW) €27.00m

The young Villarreal winger has continued to impress in the Spanish LaLiga for the second season running to justify his high ratings as one of the most promising youngster in Europe. Chukwueze now has 63 LaLiga games under his boots with 8 goals to his credit in two seasons. The 21-year old has also hit the ground running for the Eagles where he is now a regular feature.

Alex IWOBI, 24, (F) €25.50m

The former Arsenal forward who recorded 11 goals and 16 assists for the Gunners in 100 EPL appearances has struggled to impress in his first season with Everton having managed only one Premier League goal in 25 appearances. Iwobi will now be under pressure to justify his record €34m move to the Toffees next season with better performances. He however, remains a regular feature for the Eagles.

Victor OSIMHEN, 21, (CF) €27.00m

With 18 goals across all competitions in only his first season in the French Ligue 1 for Lille, Osimhen rose almost overnight to become Nigeria’s most wanted player with Serie A side, Napoli already on the verge to completing a whooping €60m deal for the 21-year old striker which would make him Nigeria’s costliest player ever. The prolific scorer is also growing into his predatory form in the national team for the Eagles.

Emmanuel DENNIS, 22, (CF) €13.50m

The skillful forward enjoyed a solid outing in Belgium starring for Club Brugge and has scored 19 league goals in 76 appearances for the club across three seasons. His highlight performance in the outgone season was his brace against Real Madrid in UEFA Champions League group stages. Despite his growing prowess in Europe, Dennis however, remains a fringe player in the Eagles having made just two cameo appearances for Nigeria.

THE PLAYERS THAT MISSED OUT OF THE XI

WILLIAM Troost-Ekong (CB) €3.20m

It is such a ridicule that Troost-Ekong who has so far shone very much at Udinese in the Italian Serie A this season has a hugely low valuation of just €3.20m.

The 26-year-old has made 27 starts in 28 league appearances for Udinese this term and was highly impressive when the Maroons defeated Juventus 2-1 only last week.

KENNETH Omeruo, 26 (CB) €2.40m

Omeruo despite the fact that his club, Leganes suffered relegation from the Spanish La Liga Santander into the Segunda should be commanding a fee higher than €2.40m. The 26-year-old started 22 of 23 Spanish top-flight games in the just-concluded season with a goal and five yellow cards to his name. He is on Levante’s transfer radar.

LEON Balogun, 32 (CB) €800Th. – Rangers

Nigerian international, Leon Balogun last Friday completed a move to Rangers where compatriot, Joe Aribo is currently being managed by Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard.

Balogun upended his signature on a one-year deal with the Ibrox-based club-side after Rangers made a move for the defender following his departure from Wigan Athletic.

JOE Aribo, 24, (CM) €1.00m – Rangers

It is such a shock that Aribo’s monetary value on Transfermarkt is a meagre amount of €1.00m after the wonderful debut campaign the midfielder had for Rangers last season.
The midfielder who joined from Charlton Athletic last summer has been exceptional in pre-season, earning huge praise from fans and also from the Gers boss, Steven Gerrard.

KELECHI Iheanacho, 23, €12.00m – Leicester City

Iheanacho made 20 Premier League appearances for Leicester City this season, netting five times and making four assists to improve greatly after under-performing last term.
The forward also reached double figure of goals for the first time in one season since joining Leicester in 2017, having netted ten times in 26 games in all competitions.

AHMED Musa, 27, (F) €8.00m – Al Nassr

Skipper and one of the most senior members of the Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa has seen it all in football. He is a proud winner of the African Cup of Nations while he is also the highest-scoring Nigerian player at the FIFA World Cup with four goals.

The 27-year-old has, however, been very far from his best so far this season, having failed to score in 17 Saudi Arabian Professional League games for Al-Nassr FC with only five assists in his record.

MOSES Simon, 25, (F) €6.50m – Nantes

Simon performed creditably in his first season ever in France, scoring nine goals and making eight assists in 29 games overall following a loan switch from Spanish LaLiga outfit, Levante.
In the French top-flight, he registered five goals and five assists which earned him the team’s Player of the Season accolade – garnering 40 percent of votes in a poll conducted by the club’s faithful.

CYRIEL Dessers, 25, (CF) €3.20m – Genk

Red-hot striker, Cyriel Dessers will certainly give the Super Eagles number nine and Lille talisman, Victor Osimhen a run for his money should the Belgian-born finally make his international debut for Nigeria.
Dessers also recently made a departure from Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands to Genk in Belgium. The 25-year-old attacking sensation finished joint top-scorer of the Dutch Eredivisie with 15 goals in 26 games.

OTHER DEFENDERS

KINGSLEY Ehizibue, 25, (RB) €2.00m – FC Koln
BRIAN Idowu, 28 (LB) €950Th. – Lokomotiv
SHEHU Abdullahi, 27 (RB) €650Th. – Bursaspor
Tyronne Ebuehi, 24, (RB) €550Th. – Benfica

Osayi is no threat to anybody in the present team, there's nothing he can offer that those we have can't. He's not better than Bonaventure let alone.

The report is so in depth that I read with shock. The amount of insight into what went on wholly reflected on Ndidi.

I think Rodgers still has a lot of work to do on Ndidi with respect to his on the ball dictation of play. However, so far so good.

Makes me want to watch more Leicester City games because of Ndidi.

I think it is a nice journey for the young Super Eagles warrior.

What are you talking about? I said he should maintain the same energy which means he surely has been assessing other players.

He has been directing his energy to English kids same way Doherty has been doing too..you can tell him to dasses other players. komekn watch only English league and he has really bring some of this talented lad to our hearing the likes of ajayi, iorfa, eze, tega, ejaria, aribo et al IMO he has even contributed to this thread more than many of us here (am not asslicking him but thats the truth)
He made an earlier proposition that onomah should be invited same way you guys said nwakali should be integrated into the team it his choice and opinion you can tell him to change it ....he is putting in energy in what's he thinks is the best so who are you to tell him to charge those energy to other players ..common on !!!!
