How then do you determine when it is a figure of speech and when it is a literal expression?

Zephaniah's prophecy should be of help here!

He said "Before the decree takes effect, before the day passes by like chaff, before the burning anger of Jehovah comes upon you, before the day of Jehovah's anger come upon you.....Seek Jehovah you MEEK ones of the earth, who observe his righteos decrees, seek RIGHTEOSNESS, seek MEEKNESS, probably you will be concealed on the day of Jehovah's anger" Zephaniah 2:2-3

Humility (MEEKNESS) is the key here!

You've always argued that Christianity and Bible is filled with contradictions but now is the time to meditate on things with an open mind.

To illustrate think of two persons disputing over the possession of a certain key, both claims they have the real key that's designed to open a door, behind the door are certain treasures that's very costly and needed by all. Both of them continue arguing about the description of the key but their descriptions totally contradicts each other.
Will it not be appropriate to ask each of them to try opening the door to the treasure so that all eyes can see who truly possess the unique key? Matthew 5:13-16

Jehovah's Witnesses Organization said "God's holy spirit is his active force which he uses to accomplish his purposes"

Others are saying "God's holy spirit is another Person and part of a TRINITY"

Instead of focusing on their arguments, why not ask for the FRUIT Jesus promised that will be evident with the group having the holy spirit? Matthew 7:16-20

LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, GOODNESS, GENTLENESS, FAITH, MILDNESS, and SELF-CONTROL are the qualities of this FRUIT! Galatians 5:22-23

Why not observe carefully the group that's exhibiting those qualities? Daniel 12:10

You don't need to listen to arguments of two men debating on how to make money, all you need is check their assets and networth, that one can't be hidden too, can it? smiley

But the apostles communed with the Holyspirit, didn't they? Was that also an Apostrophe? Lol Acts 13:2

When has the holy spirit ever had a two-way conversation with anybody in the Bible?
Shouldn't be so hard to show such a scripture, should it?

At Acts 13:2, Paul and Barnabas were simply appointed as apostles by holy spirit – it doesn't mean holy spirit was having a conversation with them. The to-be apostles got the message/assignment directly from Jehovah God himself, so God spoke to them through a figurative ‘loudspeaker’ – that is, holy spirit. A loudspeaker isn't a living being, is it? Just a means of transmitting messages/information. That's how God, by his holy spirit communicated with them.

Janosky abeg come explain this with better illustrations.

Study light.org is a Trinitarian website.
Bros,go and argue with your fellow Triune spirits believers RUBBISHING your false claims grin

John 4:24,Jesus said " God is a spirit".

Almighty God is Not your "3 spiritual beings"
John 7:16, 15:15. Almighty God taught his son, Jesus Christ.
"

Bros, do you no know the Bible or know the only true God (of John 17:3 and John 4:24) more than Jesus Christ ?
.

Don't DISGRACE yourself. grin

You want us to argue over Scriptures.

Because Studylight website support your position on this matter, you quickly ran to them.

This same Studylight didn't refer to Jesus as god as you portray Him to be in your New World Translation, neither does it support your claim of the Holy Spirit as an active force. This same Studylight didn't support most of your erroneous beliefs and spurious doctrine. But you won't quote them. Why do you now think they are reliable sources in this case. You just want us to argue unnecessary over words.

God is a spirit as John 4:24 says. Is a spiritual being not a spirit? The Father and Jesus Christ are spiritual beings. Jesus came to this world in human form. We have finite knowledge and understanding about the Godhead - these spiritual beings - because only what God want us to know He has revealed. Deuteronomy 29:29.

If we continue like this, as I earlier said, it will only amount to arguments over words/beliefs/concepts. We've not even started yet. Time & other engagements won't allow me to do this. Aside that, it will look like I'm attacking this denominational sect (JW) because of her erroneous and spurious doctrines about Jesus Christ, Jehovah God, the Holy Spirit, the state of one who died, life after the advent of Christ, the spirit and soul of man, heaven, government, to mention a few. Even the name Jehovah Witness chosen and used by this group is a misnomer.

My final word for you: Try to study the Scriptures with an open mind, not with a mind closed by JW concepts and beliefs. When you do, you will come to know the real truth, not a truth "slanted" or "coloured" according to JW's beliefs and concepts.

Only a thoughtless person will remain in that group after careful study and research of JW's origin, belief and doctrines and their failed prophecies!

You only need to humble yourselves before you can see God's glory as brightly shown amongst Jehovah's Witnesses. What most people call failed prophecies makes me pity innocent ones like you. Jehovah's Witnesses are fulfilling Jesus' words to keep on the watch for the appointed time and they are constantly paying attention to observe the fulfilment of Bible prophecies.
So simply because they are always discussing amongst themselves how to remain alert while doing God's work of preaching and teaching, the enemies of truth are brainwashing persons like you telling you JWs are responsible for failed prophecies abi?
Please when did paying attention to prophecies recorded in God's word become prophesying?
Perhaps you don't grasp the meaning of prophesying!
It simply means telling people what has not been heard about the coming events that are destined to happen, Jehovah's Witnesses are discussing amongst themselves how to pay attention to the Prophecies found in God's word they are not making any new prophecy but what is found written in God's word!
So use your brains and not lie that the enemies of truth are spreading about them! undecided

Now the Holyspirit is not a force but a loud speaker?
Like I always tell people, you can defend what you want to believe in the bible. The bible is an interesting book like that.

Anyway, I've shown you portions where the Holyspirit was addressed as a Person by Jesus Christ himself and also the apostles.
I understand you don't believe in trinity but that doesn't mean you should deny portions of the bible which personify the Holyspirit.

Yes sin and death were also addressed as kings. (Romans 5:14,21).
But I don't think that made them real persons with identities.

Please study and meditate the Bible very well. Read and study John chapter 1 vs 1, which says
'In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God' mean. It's a reference to the Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity - Jesus Christ, who is the Word incarnate.

Most translators did some omission in that account while some merely copied froreference.
See the references materials below.

I want you to take note of the difference in the use of the word "God" in John 1:1. God appeared twice in John 1:1. (See screenshot).
The Greek word for the 1st God is this...(θεόν).
(See 1st arrow to your right)

While that for the 2nd God is this... (θεὸς)
(See the 2nd arrow to your left).
They're both different. While the first one is rendered God, the 2nd one is rendered "a god." There is an indefinite article "a" which precedes the second. This indefinite article "a" was omitted in most translations.

Have you read John 1:1-14 before? if yes, what is your understanding of vs 1 and 14?

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Yes i have. But unfortunately something was omitted in this verse you quoted. Study this materials below carefully.

Only those who don't know this sect erroneous doctrines and their failed prophecies, better called predictions, first started by Charles Taze Russell (founder and their first prophet) and continued by his successors about:

• the setting of God's kingdom during his time and the exercise of power in 1878 (The Time Is At Hand, 1888-1911 edition page 101),

• how Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the prophets of old, particular those mentioned in Hebrews 11 will return in 1925 as men of human perfection (Millions Now Living Will Never Die, 1920, page 90), with the claim that these dates are evident in the Scriptures.,

• how all members of the body of Christ will be changed to heavenly glory during this year, that is 1925. This may be accomplished. It may not be" (The Watchtower, January 1, 1925, page 3). They are not even certain of their prediction here, but cautious, so that when their prediction fail as did in the past, they would have a defence to give. As expected it failed.

• how the "Nazi-Facist-Hierachy rule will come to an end, and that will mark the end forever of demon rule" in 1941 (The Watchtower, December 15, 1941, page 377). The question is: Is the devil still active today?

When their prediction of 1914 didn't come to pass, they later predicted that in 1975, world affairs will come to end.

"In view of the short time left, a decision to pursue a career in the system of things is not only unwise but extremely dangerous" (Kingdom Ministry, June 1969, page 3).

Many gullible brothers and sisters of theirs who were offered scholarships and employment that promised fine pay turned them down to pursue spiritual interest first. Some of their brothers went as far as selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world's end - 1 John 2:17 (Kingdom Ministry, May 1974, page 3). Prophecy failed again.

These few list of their predictions, among many, that failed and their erroneous doctrines and self-made beliefs still amaze me how some of their members still defend their position and remain in that sect! Either they are ignorant about the beginning of this denomination or they know, but as usual, is my parents' church, and stay put. (The above mentioned predictions were historical facts in their publications as stated).

A sincere seeker of the truth who have investigated the sect from the early beginnings to date will leave this group who propagate things written in their New World Translation (an edited version of the Scriptures) and their so called "inspired books" published after they have been censored by their ruling body (some books mentioned above).

So many things wrong about this sect who even chose the name "Jehovah Witness" that doesn't fit them in the first place but false and misleading and taken out of context of Scriptures.

Discussing their beliefs and erroneous teachings will amount to argument.

This will be my last comment on this thread.

Let me leave you with these departing verses of the Scriptures OP

"But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die......And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’—when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him." (Deuteronomy 18:20-22)

"But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction." (2 Peter 2:1)

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1)

Thank you for your time OP.

And upon all this lengthy epistle of yours the same thing you're here to keep repeating is this old story of FAILED PROPHECIES! embarassed

The post above yours have nullified this with just one point, Jehovah's Witnesses are keeping in mind the very word of Jesus who said "keep on the watch" Matthew 24:42

To illustrate, the king of a city travelled on a journey and told his people he will be back but never told them the date or time instead he gave them signs that they have to watch out for in order to know he's the one approaching, do you expect those keeping AWAKE on the WATCHTOWER to be there without warning the city of whatever is approaching? smiley

Well i'm one of the concerts who left Islam to join this organization, and i've heard so many stories like your type, but as a former soldier i know for sure what it takes when soldiers are keeping watch over a city. So what sincere and honest hearted individuals like myself would have expected from your epistle is a better performing group that's practicing Christianity in the right sense more than Jehovah's Witnesses and not just the same old stuff of failed prophecies!

If you must know, Jesus truthfully returned in 1914, from that year till today so many signs Jesus mentioned has been unfolding one after another, religionsists have never experienced persons performing signs and wonders of no repute before then, famine, pestilence, wars, earthquakes, rumours of wars and false religions have never in the history of mankind being this rampant and there has never been a time when people devoted their time, effort and resources to preaching and teaching a message of PEACE globally like that before. Which group has worked out this PEACE amongst all their members globally? Only Jehovah's Witnesses! smiley
In every nation i've been, whenever i here people talk of a group having unshakable Love amongst themselves {John 13:34-35} and at the same time people are saying they hate them {John 17:14} it's no other group than JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES!
So try to point out another religious group that is performing better than Jehovah's Witnesses in all these areas, your lengthy epistle is of no use Sir! smiley

Jesus Christ has risen to heaven. John 20:17

Revelations 3:5,12,21 , Jesus Christ himself CONFESSED that John 4:23,24. 17:3.
Acts 3:13. Isaiah 43:10-12 . 1 Corinthians 3:23 is the truth.

Compare John 14:28, John 20:17,30-31 and Revelations 3:5,12,21.
Is the spiritual realm Superior to the physical realm?

Therefore, Jesus utterances of Revelations 3:5,12 in the spiritual realm is solid EVIDENCES of his inferior status in heaven as well as earth.

I have said I won't reply you anymore but you keep presenting materials that your sect has provided to prove its erroneous assertion

This is one of the most common verses of contention between the Jehovah's Witnesses and Christians. Their false assumption is that Jesus is not God in flesh but Michael the archangel who became a man.  Therefore, since they deny that Jesus is divine, they have altered the Bible in John 1:1 so that Jesus is not divine in nature.  The New World Translation has added the word "a" to the verse so that it says, " . . . and the Word was a god."  The correct translation of this verse is "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God."  This is how it is rendered in the NASB, NIV, KJV, NKJV, ASV, RSV, etc.

The New World translation is incorrect in its translation of this verse for several reasons.  First of all, the Bible teaches a strict monotheism.  To say that Jesus is "a god" is to suggest that there is another god besides YHWH, which is contrary to scripture Isaiah 43:10; 44:6, 8, etc.. Of course, the Jehovah's Witnesses will respond that Jesus is not the Almighty God, but a "lesser" kind of God.  He is the "mighty God" as is referenced in Isaiah 9:6, "For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us, and the government will rest on His shoulders, and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace."  Therefore, they say that Jesus is the mighty god but not the Almighty God.

The immediate problem with this explanation is that YHWH is also called the Mighty God in Jeremiah 32:18 and Isaiah 10:21.  In all three verses, including Isaiah 9:6, the Hebrew word for "mighty" (gibbor) is used.

Isaiah 10:20-21, "Now it will come about in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.  21A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God."

Jer. 32:18, "who showest lovingkindness to thousands, but repayest the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O great and mighty God, the LORD of hosts is His name."

We can see that the Jehovah's Witness explanation is not valid; both the Son and God are called the Mighty God.

Furthermore, how many actual gods are there in scripture?  The obvious answer is that there is only one God in existence.  Though there are others who have been falsely called gods 1 Cor. 8:5-6 or even said to be "as God" like Moses (Ex. 4:16; 7:1, there is only one real God Gal. 4:8-9; Isaiah 44:6, 8. If Jesus is "a god" that was "with God" in the beginning, then is Jesus a true god or a false god?

But, the Jehovah's Witnesses often claim that Jesus is a god in the sense that Moses was called a god; but, Moses was not called a god.  Rather, he would be "as God."

"Moreover, he shall speak for you to the people; and it shall come about that he shall be as a mouth for you, and you shall be as God to him." Exodus 4:16

"Then the Lord said to Moses, 'See, I make you as God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet.'" Exodus 7:1

Why was Moses going "as God" to Pharaoh?  Because Moses was given the authority and power to display powerful miracles that decimated much of Egypt.  Was Moses really a god?  Being "as God" with regard to the power given to perform miracles over Egypt is not the same thing as being called "a god" that was in the beginning with God. John 1:1

John was a strict Jew, a monotheist. Does the Jehovah's Witness really think that John would be saying that there was another God besides Jehovah even if it were Jesus? Being raised a good Jew, the Apostle John would never believe that there was more than one God in existence. Yet, he compared the word with God, said the word was God, and that the word became flesh John 1:1, 14

John 1:1 in a literal translation reads thus:  "In beginning was the word, and the word was with the God, and God was the word."  Notice that it says "God was the word." This is the actual word-for-word translation.  It is not saying that "a god was the word."  That wouldn't make sense.  Let me break it down into three statements.

"In beginning was the word . . . "
(en    arche      en  ho  logos)

A very simple statement that the Word was in the beginning.

"and the word was with the God . . . "
(kai  ho  logos  en  pros ton theon)

This same Word was with God.

"and God was the word."-Properly translated as "and the Word was God."
(kai theos en   ho  logos)

This same Word was God.

Regarding statement 3 above, the correct English translation is " . . . and the Word was God" and not "and God was the word."  This is because if there is only one definite article "ho"="the" in a clause where two nouns are in the nominative "subject" form "theos" and "logos", then the noun with the definite article "ho"="the" is the subject.  In this case "ho logos" means that "the word" is the subject of the clause.  Therefore, " . . . the Word was God" is the correct translation and not "God was the Word."1 But this does not negate the idea that John is speaking of only one God, not two, even though the Jehovah's Witnesses maintain that Jesus is "a god" or the "mighty god" as was addressed above.

Is there suddenly a new god in the text of John 1:1?  It is the same God that is being spoken of in part 2 as in part 3.  How do the Jehovah's Witnesses maintain that the word had somehow become a god in this context since there is only one God mentioned? Remember, the Jehovah's Witnesses teach that Jesus was Michael the Archangel.  Therefore, is there any place in the Bible where an angel is called "a god" besides Satan being called the god of this world in 2 Cor. 4:3-4

John 20:28--"Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord and my God!'"

In the Greek in John 20:28 Thomas said to Jesus, "ho kurios mou, kai ho theos mou," "The Lord of me, and the God of me." If Jesus was not God, but "a" god, then shouldn't Jesus have corrected Thomas?  Shouldn't Jesus have said, "No, Thomas, I am not the God.  I am a god."?  But Jesus did not.  To do so would have been ludicrous.  Nevertheless, the Jehovah's Witness will say that Thomas was so stunned by Jesus' appearance that he swore.  This is ridiculous because it means that Thomas, a devout man of God, swore in front of Jesus and used the Lord's name in vain in violation of Exodus 20:7.  This is hardly the case since we find no New Testament equivalent of a disciple of Christ using God's name in vain.

In conclusion, John 1:1 is best translated without the "a" inserted into the text.  "The Word was God" is the best translation.  This way, we do not run into the danger of polytheism with Jesus being "a god."  We do not have Thomas the disciple swearing and using God's name in vain; and, we do not have the problem of Jesus being a "mighty god" and yet not the God--even though God Himself is called the Mighty God Jeremiah 32:18; Isaiah 10:21

Most translators did some omission in that account while some merely copied.
See the reference materials below.

See the second screenshot below.

God himself declared that Moses will become a God {Exodus 7:1} yet Moses (like Jesus) keep telling everyone that there is a Supreme Being who made him great! Deuteronomy 6:4

Moses prophesied that a prophet like him will be raised amongst the Israelites {Deuteronomy 18:15-18} Apostles Peter declared Jesus as the prophet Moses spoke about {Act 3:22} So Jesus served as both God and Prophet at the same time just like Moses.

If you wish to know the similarities between this two prophets feel free to ask, but be rest assured that Peter (one Jesus' closest confidants) also believe that Jesus was also a prophet in the manner of Moses!

God bless you! smiley

Yes sin and death were also addressed as kings. (Romans 5:14,21).
But I don't think that made them real persons with identities.

Theres a difference between personification and an actual person.
Let me ask you one simple question.
Is God a person or is personified?
Because the Holyspirit is the Spirit of God.

Is there a body for Spiritual beings and a different body for human beings?
1 Corinthians 15:40 says yes .

However, holy spirit is NOT another Spiritual being with a life of its own (Contrary to the false claims of Trinitarians).

What is the EVIDENCE

Open your Bible and study the words of Jesus Christ and Apostles John and Paul.

Jesus Christ speaking, John 20:17 and Rev 3:12,
Whose God did Jesus Christ ascend to ?

John 20:30-31, John 17:3,17 what must you believe to gain everlasting life?

Acts 3:13, 1 Corinthians3:23 . 11:3 whom does Jesus Christ in heaven belong to?
Whom do you belong to ?
Is God the head of Himself?

Bros, these very Scriptures here are what you have claimed to be " erroneous and spurious doctrines" grin

We have seen that sonofElElyon ,an imperfect man, knows the Bible and knows God more than Jesus Christ to the extent that the teachings Jesus learnt from his Father (John 15:15. John 7:16) he shamelessly rejected on this public forum.

Bros, enjoy your night and day.

Jesus says whoever commits blasphemy against The Holy Spirit commits the unforgivable sin..

I guess you can also commit sin against a loud speaker

the more you try to justify your position the more ridiculous you sound

DappaD:

Yes sin and death were also addressed as kings. (Romans 5:14,21).
But I don't think that made them real persons with identities.

It's obvious you don't know what Jesus meant in that verse! undecided
When you're ready to know more about Jesus' words at Matthew 12:31, mention me or forever hold your peace.
