What's rod?
Let give a disserted view from a bible scholar on discpline. This will answer your question on the word rod.
"Christian parents frequently seek the Bible in their effort to raise godly children. They believe that there is a biblical mandate to spank and they fear that if they don't spank, they will commit the sin of losing control of their child. They believe that God has commended them to spank and they take “spare the rod and spoil the child” literally, but in doing so they misunderstand the concept of the rod. The following are the biblical verses which have caused the greatest confusion:
1.He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” (Proverbs 13:24)

2.“Folly is bound up in the heart of a child. But the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.” (Proverbs 22:15)

“3. Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.” (Proverbs 23:13-14)

4. “The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to itself disgraces his mother.” (Proverbs 29:15)
At first glance these verses seem to be in strong support of the use of corporal punishment, but do they really? Through a closer examination of the Hebrew word for “rod(shebet) one can see that in the Hebrew dictionary it has various meanings, a stick for walking, writing, fighting, ruling, and punishment. The word “shebet” is most frequently used when referring to shepherds who are tending their flocks. The Shepherds used the stick to fight off prey and to gently guide wandering sheep, not to beat them
Reread the passages above and replace the references to punishment and the use of the rod with the word “accountability” and the meaning stays the same.

For example:
Proverbs 13:24 would read, “He who spares accountability hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.”

Proverbs 22:15 would read, “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child. But holding him accountable will drive it far from him.”

Proverbs 23:13-14 would read, “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you create a culture of accountability he will not die. Create accountability and save his soul from death.”

Proverbs 29:15 would read, “The culture of accountability imparts wisdom, but a child left to itself disgraces his mother.”

Christians believe that the bible is the inspired word of God and yet while holding fast to interpreting the “rod” in the Proverbs passages above as a mandate to spank, they dismiss other passages that seem too harsh by today’s standards, such as, “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.” (Exodus 21:15) or “If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother, and his blood will be on his own head.” (Leviticus 20:9) Almost every parent would admit that their child has at one time said, “I hate you.” or “You’re not the boss of me.” or maybe, “F--- YOU.” But no one would say that their child should be put to death. And we would all agree that that child needs to held accountable for their choice in behavior. The Bible simply does not support spanking, it supports holding children accountable.

@Post

I also thought it was child abuse. The average Nigerian parent is abusive and most Nigerians consider physical and verbal abuse okay. I didn't know what child abuse was until I was brought to Nigeria as a child against my will. I experienced so much child abuse that it has affected me today as an adult. I am no longer in contact with all those family members who are narcissist and abused me.

This is also one of several reasons why I am not generally fond of Nigerians and keep them at arm's length. It is also the reason why I can never see myself residing in Nigeria again not even in old age because the childhood trauma I experienced while growing up in Nigeria is something I can never forget.

Most Nigerians are evil and that is the reason why that country Nigeria will never rise from the ashes.

When relating the UK to Nigeria abuse situation, please remember UK has constant power supply, legalized marijuana use for recreation, railway is superb over there, citizens get government tokens for financial support, developmental strides are top notch I can go on and on.

So when comparing and suggesting needs for reforms and laws on Child Abuse, please don't forget the aforementioned.

Cuz the lack of those are what causes madness and it results in so much frustration that if a child mess in the presence of their parent it's counted as a major offence and can be caned for that.
It's a vicious circle

So madam onochie advice the government first on the needful and AL others will be automatically taken care of.

Some of you are sick seriously. You called that child abuse? How did she abuse the boy? Spare the rod and spoil the child. No wonder we have generation of idiots, who cannot differentiate between what is right and good. Am sure we all listen to what that woman was saying in the video. The young chaps took something which he wasn't supposed to take in the first place and the mother decided to punish him. If he was to be left alone without corrections and maybe spank him, he will definitely think that's a way of life and has he grows he begins to take things that doesn't belong to him. At that age talking to him alone cannot and will never do the job. Spanking atimes must be added so he would know there is punishment for every offence. So I do not subscribe to this don't spank a child principle coz that is one reason why there is so many immoralities in our world today.
the way you think is way most nigerians think thats why we cant progress. only few nigerians are thinking like 21st century peeps.

Withhold discipline from your children and watch them go haywire.

Africans are suffering from inferiority complex.

Must we copy UK and US.? Can't we set our own standards and maintain it. Even people that have not crossed cotoneu are even telling us "if it's in UK."
That's why they kill you in Europe because you can't do something on your own without copying them.

Madam, this is not an abuse. In Yoruba land we're highly discipline and still such in our wards. The boy wasn't spanked in that video. The bible even made it known that we should train up our children. It is obvious the boy has been in the habit of doing such thing, hence the need to reprimand him seriously and even at that the mother still allow him express himself - dialogue with him, for him to know that His continued behaviour in such manner is not acceptable.

Many children have been turned hard nuts before of the western way of raising children. Bad!....a Yoruba adage says..."it is when a fish is fresh you can fold it, once it's dried is not possible again."

Corrections should be done out of love. The truth is this is a case of child abuse.
Irrespective of the comedic relief .The boy is a child that needs protection. He was accused of theft .taking what does not belong to him.forget what you see as benefits .he can be bullied and called names in future by friends classmates etc as a result of the video which he might not like. This can result into depression. The primary issues is the recording and publications.take a scenario in future he goes for an interview .he was ask are you not the boy who stole his mother's stuff.and he said yes all a sudden the busted into laughter . someone says hope you will not do the same here jokingly. That speaks alot.

She should shut up. She's acting like she's not aware how silly Nigerian children can get at times. When you ask them don't do that's when they want to do. Don't discipline your kids all in the name of trauma and when they grow they can't face tough situations. That's why suicide is on the rise.
it means you are silly also. That a child is silly does not warrant being displayed online without his or her consent.even from the video the child knew the implications of that. It's sad that adults would justify the showing of such online. The parents should be sued.
I would never tolerate such .

you don't even know the meaning of abuse not to talk of child abuse.
Child abuse refers to any emotional, sexual, or physical mistreatment or neglect by an adult in a role of responsibility toward someone who is under 18 years of age. It refers to any kind of action or failure to act that results in harm or possible harm for a child. The keyword as regards to the boy is Emotional.
He was being emotionaly abused
The child even beg not to be taped.
It sad that adults would behave in such manner
