Meanwhile, I could figure out that the man was trying to make sincere repentance by making self confession and accepts punishment. This is the highest of repentance in Islamic sharia. The man has the opportunity to deny thereby leaving his punishment to Almighty Allah after his natural death which is most severe than stoning (I don't force you to believe this).
May Almighty Allah forgive this man, accept his repentance and grant him Jannah firdaus.

Death is over the top.

Punishment needs to fit the crime.

A long jail sentence could be determined commensurate depending on the circumstances of the rape. But never death . Unless the rapist fatally wounds the victim during the rape.
