I can't stop laughing, I have to read this many times to enjoy it more, the proud and selfish mezie has gotten what he deserves, imagine admitting to himself that he needs Akwa, but can't say it loud because of pride, I pray everything works out well for Morgan and Akwaugo, Olaedo needs sane parent to raise her not a proud Buffon like Mezie, actually this his name suits him.

Oh! how I have missed this story! A lot has really happened while I've been AWOL..
From Akwaugo leaving that Ewu of a husband, to Morgan helping her break the curse that was supposed to kill her. Mezie should just stop fooling around and accept his bride price.... he should drop that useless pride. Akwaugo returning to him is an impossible tense!

Rosemary Idi too much.

Babe, have i told you how much i love you and your work?

Well, i do.

Really. A lot.

I love its realism and the choice of words.

Well done.

P.S. I thought Akwa would walk out on Morgan, so i could have him. I think he's the first fictional character since Ricky Underwood in The Secret Life of an American Teenager, I've had a crush on.

Chapter 28

With his boys also gone, Mezie could now afford to break down and weep, punch the walls and kick objects. Leisure he had held up for long for fear of the boys seeing him as weak, their disturbing gazes following him, was worse than the mad rage he was fighting. And to add that he no longer had to keep pretending there was something to hold on to, lying about expecting a consignment that never came.

He would have worried so much about their unannounced resignations and departure, but nothing surprised him nowadays. Who said people were meant to bond with you forever? Akwaugo did leave after all he did for her- after what they’d been through.

He pulled the low stool closer and sat with a thud, tightened his grip on his cutlass and began shaving off the coconut skin, humming a soft tone. Then he hissed and shook his head, “Money” he said, money would be some person’s undoing. He chuckled. He may have lost his money, his manhood and his wife, but he still knew what it meant to be a man!

The scenes from the previous meeting played out in his head and he chuckled again. The man felt he could influence everything with money. He would make sure he frustrates Akwaugo and her money bag to the point that he would move on without her and she would be covered with shame.

He abandoned the coconut and the cutlass, folded his loincloth between his thighs and shifted his butt backward on the stool. He tried so hard not to allow her though creep in, but he wouldn’t deny how different she looked the last time he caught a glimpse of her standing with the Reverent father. she was like an Oyibo woman- one that hadn’t seen the sun for years, she’d add some flesh too, and that man was beside her, he never left her side, always parading her as if he could claim ownership.

He kicked the half-shaved coconut and stood up. He had suddenly lost appetite to eat the thing. He went to his wooden chair and relaxed. He felt an ugly sensation welling inside him, one he didn’t want to admit. He wanted her back- so much that his chest was tightened that day as it was doing now. How could he be so blind? He would have done somethings differently, at least she wouldn’t have left and that man wouldn’t have to look him on the face and talk about taking his wife.

He was about easing himself off the chair when his gate rebounded and Akwaugo walked in. the thumping in his heart surprised him, he wished he could clutch his chest and command it to stop. Where was the rage? The desire for her death? All he wanted now was the woman sashaying towards him. She removed the dark sunshade that hung on the bridge of her nose and beamed him a smile. Was it the time he was a complete man, he would have shamelessly had an erection.

He waited for her to get the bench that was propped by the wall and sat beside him, they said nothing to each other for a while, but he observed her from the corner of his eyes- her eyes roamed around the place that used to be hers, a place that she once transformed into a beautiful home- only that he didn’t see it then.

“You have grown” he managed to say. With his back bent and his eyes on the ground. A few months ago, she would have been the one with her back bent and her eyes on the floor. Not the kind of woman who would walk in so tall and have the confidence to sit beside him like an equal.

“So much has happened these past months” she widened her legs and balanced her elbows on her laps to support her weight.

He looked her over, his lips turned down. She now wore trousers, something she wouldn’t have dared when she was with him, that man did turn her into a city woman who even tinted her lips with lipstick.

“This place is so quiet” she muttered.

Such a kind word. Dead would have best described the situation of his house- the whole of his being, dead. “I am alone now; nobody stays with me anymore”

She didn’t ask why, she knew. Neither was there any pity on her face, a good thing though, she also knew he hated pity.

“This man…when are you leaving him? You know you can never be with him, right? And our baby will never be his. Did you tell him that?” he finally looked directly at her.

“That is why I am here Mezie”

He stared at her for a while, considering how best to approach this issue- he wasn’t only holding her back for nothing, he wanted her as his wife again, he wanted the scent of her in his house on his bed- he would give Okorie anything left of him to make him a man again just to make his woman happy.

“You have no life with him Asa m. you belong here…you used to make this place beautiful, you made it comfortable for everyone. Now look at it”

“Mezie…” what he saw in her eyes gave him a shiver. She was distant- how possible would it be to dig up the heart that once loved him. “I have moved on; I have adapted into this new life and will not want to come back here…”

“I can move with you, if staying in this village is what will make it difficult for you to come back to me, I will go to anywhere with you. I can start another business, you know I am a hard-working man, in less than a year, I will be on my feet and we will be happy again”

“You don’t understand what I am saying” she frowned “Morgan is my future now…he is the father of my child and he wants us!”

The more he tried to avoid bringing this man into the picture, the more it failed. “Morgan. Is that his name?” she said nothing. “I know you Asa m, I know what you want- what is good for you. Believe me when I say he is not what you want…”

Her face darkened “Please, can you help me highlight what you think is good for me?”

“You are as calm as the sea in the night, you had always loved it here- just the two of us. The lack of exposure, the noise and loudness of the kind of wealth that man has is not what you want…” she was being blind now, but soon she would see he was right all along.

“Is that really what is good for me or what you chose for me?”

“I was what worked for us then, you never complained…”

“I did complain Mezie, you didn’t listen” she squeezed her eyes shut, shook her head and open them “I have a job now as a nurse in a big hospital in the city…”

“You can keep the job! We will move together as a family…I have a cousin who will be willing to accommodate us until I get us our own house”

“Mezie…Mezie!!” she shouted “I don’t want to go anywhere with you”

He’d prepare for this day but didn’t know it would hurt this bad. “Sure, you will” she didn’t withdraw her hands when he took them, neither did she try to cover his fingers in hers. “You have to. I mean, we have nothing left but each other” he looked into her eyes “I beg you Onye nkem…please”
She shook her head, “No. there is no ‘we’ Mezie…”

“I can allow the man to have the child, then both of us can start all over…I will be a better man, a better husband”

she withdrew her hand from his, “You are no longer my husband Mezie. I will not start anything with you”

“Not even if I go down on my knees and beg?” the woman he knew would not wait for him to go down on his knees, she knew the implication of allowing a man bend for a woman. Would she watch him humiliate himself? Was that the price she would want him to pay?

“Not even that.”

He straightened on his seat. “Is this what he has done to you? Hardening your heart to the man whom you once called lord? The man who did everything to make you the woman you are today? He would never find you appealing if not for me” he spatted

“And I thank you for that. That is the reason I am here, to ask you respectively to allow me to go. Accept what is being offered. I will never see you the same way I saw you before…I know better now”

She wasn’t pleading. Just asking- the same way her new man asked. He stroked his hurting jaw and pulled his gaze away from her.

“Is there something I can do to make you come back?” his voice subdued.

“No”

He heaved. “Well, you have to go back to your adulterer, tell him I will never give him what he asks of me. I will not allow him have you and you know what would happen if you go ahead to leave with him as wife…” he fumed

She flicked her eyes to his face, beautifully trimmed brows arched up “You should know by now that I am no longer afraid of any consequences that will follow my actions, I am not afraid of your threats Mezie. I am here to satisfy my conscience”

“I am not giving you a divorce! I will not accept that bride price, period!” he snapped

“Not even when I have something of much importance to offer you in return?” she gleamed

“What can you possibly offer a dead man like me?”

“Life. To become a man again, to get back what Okorie took from you…” she must have seen the twitching of his mouth and the widening of his eyes. His hunger for feel himself again had betrayed him, “I can make him give it back to you, you can start a new life, get married and have kids…”

“What do I need performing manhood for, if I can not hold you in my arms and have sex with you”

She got up, brushed her trousers and clapped out invincible dust from her palm. “Ask yourself what would you chose. Remain miserable or grab what I am offering you. When you make your decision, go to Okorie, he would tell you what to do to get your manhood back.”

*
Morgan got off the phone for the third time that morning. He’d intended to stay no more than three days here, but somehow his plans seemed not to be working, thanks to the pig-headed man who didn’t know when to give up and let go. Idle living wasn’t his thing, he missed his office- signing papers and giving orders. But he was a man of his word, he promised her he would stay here until she became his…

The cracking of the gate got his head jerking towards the gate. The car stopped and she stepped out, sashaying towards him.

“I have looked for you everywhere.” He caught her wrist as she made to walk past him, and pulled her back. “Where did you go to?”

She arched a brow, her lips curled up in a smile “You missed me?”

“What do you think?” he muttered

“Well…I went to see an old friend, to settle an old score.” Her eyes glimmered

She was exceptionally happy this morning, the spark in her eyes, the swaying of her body from side to side… “Who is this old friend, if I may ask?”

“Hmm…” she observed him for a while “Mezie…”

He tilted his head backwards and squinted “You went to see him? Why?”

“To make a deal.”

“I don’t understand, what deal did you enter with him that you didn’t discuss first with me?” he demanded

She disengaged from his hold, stroking her arms and watching him “I had to do it on my own Nkem, I know this man more than you do…”

“You should have told me; I wouldn’t have allowed you to go there alone. What if?”

“That is the point…it is me he wants, me! He would have no other person to remind him it is over except me…”

“So? Did he agree to accept his money?”

“No”

“F*ck!” he muttered, threw his hands up and shook his head “What is the point then? It was useless…”

“I wouldn’t say that if I were you…I gave him an offer I know he can not refuse” she tilted her head sideways and watched his face creased with confusion. “I got Okorie involved…”

Now he got it! She’d decide to play a game- throwing a bone out for a dog and watch if the dog would go for it. This time she’d set a bait for the man with his manhood! He laughed. More at himself than the man. “why didn't I think of this?”

She drew closer to him, her palm on his bare chest, stroking his scar “I told you sir…money doesn’t solve everything”

“I believe you my love” she pulled gently on his hair, he grimaced and gave her hand a mild slap. “One more question, how did you get Okorie to reconsider and accept to take back his curse?”

“It’s amazing what money can do” she purred

He threw his head backwards and laughed. “Now she uses my word on me”

“You taught me well” she gave his nipple a pinch, sending sweet sensation down his groin.

He took hold of her hand “you are getting bold”

“Is there anything wrong with that?”

“I may not be able to wait a little longer to lay you down”

She skimmed her leg up to his hip, he caught it midway “Tempt me no further young woman. Trust me, I will not be gentle with you, A gam emeru kwa gi ahu” he swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat. How has he been able to survive with this woman beside him and not being able to…

“I can’t wait for you to do that to me” her warm breath caressed his lips.

"You don't know what you are asking for, my innocent beautiful one" desire smothered in him. his pulse raced,

"I had you before..."

"Oh fine face, it will be different this time" he pulled her against his chest and took her lips. he could do this all day and would never get enough of her sweetness "I want to take you gradually, exploring every curve..." his hands skimmed down her waist "I want to break your innocence, you will scream my name over and over again while i give you pleasure"

she tightened her grip around his neck and pulled his head down, "I want that so much"

"It will worth the wait my love, you will see"
