No sir this is not entirely true.
Agencies(especially licensed agents) usually are given tickets directly by the airline at a lower price the customer would get himself and in order to gain customers the agents may sell sometimes at lower price than the airline itself. For example those that got BA tickets here at a low price than usual.
And yes its true most of what we leave to agents we can do ourselves. But not everyone believes that and thats how it is.

Hope you get what im tryin to say please

No, agent's ticket price + commission will not be cheaper than that of airline especially when you are buying online.

Thanks for this.... pls can one open this account while still in Nigeria or I need to get to UK first? Also how will I be able to transfer from my Nigerin account to this new one?

Monzo: https://monzo.com/i/current-account
Starling: https://www.starlingbank.com/
You open your account from your phone and have your debit card delivered to your address. You can use your BRP, passport or DL when opening. Payment into the account will be via bank transfers or the post office since they don't have brick and mortar outlets. Debit cards arrive in 2-5 working days.
Re: Uk Student Visa/tier 4 Pbs - Your Questions Answered Part 4 by mimilyrics: 10:55pm On Sep 22, 2020
You need to get to the UK to open it because you'll need a UK number and address for the application.

You can use transfer wise to transfer to your UK account from your NGN account but you'll have to use a VPN service to enable select Nigeria as your location if not the default location will be the UK based on your IP.
If you've got a dorm account, you should be able to do online transfers for your NGN account but this may be subject to your bank's restrictions.

You can also transfer using a Nigerian BDC. You give the person Naira while the person transfers £ to your UK account. I think Omopapa and Mamatukwas also sell Forex.

No you'll have to transfer to your UK account via
1. Transfer from your NGN dorm account by sending in this request to your account officer or online banking.

2. Via TransferWise or PayPal. You'll need to use VPN so that the detected location will be Nigeria. Your NGN line will also need to be roamed for any authentication codes sent to you. Also check Mamatukwas and Omopapa from the Living in the UK thread; I think they do ForEx based on their posts.

3. Use a BDC. Transfer Naira to the BDC in Nigeria and have £ paid into your UK account.

Thanks a million mimilyrics, but will this allow me use money from my naira account in the UK?

I'm not sure i get what you are trying to say there.

What I was saying is that travel agents CAN indeed obtain prices lower than what is available on the airline website, but that in my experience it is usually Emirates and co that provide discounted tickets through the travel agents, while is is generally not possible to get lower fares than those displayed on airline websites through agents for the European airlines such as KLM, Lufthansa and Air France.

I buy all my tickets myself through airline websites.

My cousin and a good friend's wife are travel agents.

Great job!

Personally I feel you would be best served by developing your technical skills before Jan (if you dont have that already), you can develop these skill by taking courses online from udemy, Coursera, edux YouTube etc. Create a profile on GitHub and take on projects. Practise! Practise!! Practise!!!. You will be better served with your ability to solve problems, solutions you can create than the degree you will earn. Combine these two and you should be able to stand out better.

Also learn python..it will help

Thanks so much

All of you saying agent agent agent regarding flight tickets, are you saying if I purchased a ticket online last month for departure date of 23rd September at £500, if I approach an agency today, I can get a ticket for less than such amount?

I guess this should show the reason why you think the agency tickets are cheaper. As much as an agency could get discounts from an airline, I doubt they will sell below what was purchased.

Contact an agent today for a ticket in October, go online and check the price for same date, it is lower than what the agency offers.

I will try to break it down as much as I can. I hope it helps.

You can only open Monzo and Starling accounts once you're in the UK because you'll need a UK phone number and address.

Transfer wise is an app that you can use to transfer money across different countries. If you don't download a VPN app / service (VPN - Virtual Private Network - allows you to use IPs that mask your location and shows IPs from other countries making it seem like you're in a different country), the Transfer Wise app will automatically select your location as UK (for example) and you'll only be able to transfer from the UK to other countries and not the other way round because of your IP address.

Dorm account is your $£€ account in Nigeria. You can usually transfer to foreign accounts via online banking or by sending an instruction to your bank or account manager to do this. This will be subject to any restrictions that your bank has in place.

BDC is Bureau De Change aka black market sometimes. They usually take your Naira while they transfer the £ equivalent to your UK account.

But if the above still seem complicated, just carry cash on you and open an online account that you can pay your money into as soon as you arrive and sort your phone number and address. You can always open account(s) with a brick and mortar bank after you get your BRP and are settled.

I did mine on 26th August, got the non straightforward email on 10th September, no other mail for 2nd interview, my schl resumed on 7th September and if by 25th September I don't complete matriculation, i may loose the offer. This wait is quite frustrating and am feeling sick already

Thank you so much for this explanation,
this makes much sense. Option 1 is my best bet cos am a sponsored student and my maintenance fee will be paid in naira. I need to be able to do direct transfers by myself. Thank you very much once again,
God bless you.

I use a VPN when buying Lagos to London tickets and change my location from Nigeria to the UK.

Previously you usually get lower prices when you buy your tickets from the UK as opposed to buying from Nigeria, except that you have to pay with your card, which is no longer feasible with Nigerian cards.

In any case, prices on BA's website for 2nd week of October are down to tolerable levels ($410 for a one-way ticket to Manchester/Aberdeen, about 160k), and I just bought earlier today.

ALL you can do is to stay calm and positive.
In my case, after the 2nd interview the visa was issued the next day, so at least these things can move quickly.

Arrived safely in Newcastle this morning.
BA booking was to Newcastle but of course, landed in London first before we proceeded with a local plane. For those having connecting flights, please ensure you have at least 3 hours in between your flights when booking that would give ample time for any delay. BA left an hour later than scheduled plus you need time at London airport for immigration and checking in. Border was a breeze, they only asked “where are you going and what course?”

If traveling with kids on BA, ensure you pack something for the kids to eat on board Incase they don’t want the food served. I didn’t like it too but thankfully we had a back up.

Was welcomed by family with a sumptuous poundo and Edikaikong before sleeping for hours after a very hectic weekend.

Thank you all for the support I received here, and to those still processing, wishing you all the best, we look forward to welcoming you HOME.

What Uni are you going? I'm aware enrollment is done online in a lot of these schools. Can you confirm if yours is? I'm almost certain it'll be given the covid situation. I've completed my registration and already started classes despite still awaiting my visa decision.

Find out what obtains in your university and mail them immediately.

I use windscribe but when I search, it's still same price as when the VPN is off.

I use Surfshark, but like I said, this was something that used to generally work before the pandemic for buying tickets, given that airlines are in serious financial wahala these days it might not always work now. But you can only try.

Set your location to different cities in the UK (mine offers e.g. London, Glasgow, etc.) and try. But note that once your location is not set to Nigeria you will not have the option to pay in naira, only online by card, so this is only something you can try if you have a funded domiciliary account. Previously, when naira cards used to work fully with no limits it was an excellent option.

Note that the more you search an airline's website for a date, the higher the fare could go. I'm going with children, so the cheaper the fare the better for me. For instance, I was previously looking at 1 October as a travel date and it was at $810 one way. I checked it again twice, no change, and the 3rd time I checked it had ballooned to more than $1,000 economy one way (yes, that high!). I left it for a while, and tried a different VPN location and finally saw the week starting 12 October down to $410 and decided to take it.
