In this part of the world it isn't polite by African tradition. You don't relate with an older person in such manner, that is lack of courtesy. It can only be proper after greeting him, and accord him that respect, then you can now say, ' how are you sir/ma'
Or how are you doing sir/ma.
Not 'how are you' like he is your mate

I don't know about "how are you" but I've heard a few people say so about "how was your night" lol

Most married people find it offensive. But I think people are just too sensitive these days, these things are too flimsy to trigger an angry reaction.

When you see things as what they are without reading unnecessary meanings to it, then you will be fine.

MY BEST PART IS WHEN I LEAVE MONEY FOR THEM ON THE GROUND (OR WHEREVER) BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO TAKE IT FROM MY LEFT HAND.

This is Nigeria not USA.

Some sentence and how you present them might be offensive here and not in other parts of the world.

Same things applies to other part of the world

It all depends on how you as people or community or gathering view such sentence or formation of word...

It applies to other things such as using your left hand to receive or collect a thing from your elders in Nigeria or Africa may be deemed as offensive why in other parts of the world seen as perfectly normal.

How are you can be termed an insult when it's coming from a much younger person.

I think the problem is most people dont understand English Language, it's not just to speak it fluently that matters, rather ; do you understand what you speak huh

For instance ,

On a fateful morning, I got to work and instead of one of my boy to simply say Good Morning, he said " Mama, How you dey "

Throughout that day hell was let loose on him for that.
