Here is the time schedule:

Secondary school: 8:00AM - 4:00PM
University: 8:00AM - 6:00PM

I used to teach some Lebanese and Pakistanis children private lessons from 4:30 to 6:30 in which I make up to N58,000 a month. I have to sacrifice that too if I accept the university work

I think you already know what you want..
You are only looking for validation elsewhere.
Follow your heart mr man. And not the pressure of men (or women)..

Hello Nairalander,
I really need advice concerning making a choice between the two jobs before me. My family members are divided over which job I should choose.

I'm working in a highbrow secondary school and my start up salary was N75,000. After three years, my salary is now N96,000.00. I just got a lecturing job with a private university and my gross salary according to the appointment letter is N88,000.00. My father wants me to continue with my teaching in the secondary school but my mother and fiancee are pressuring me to write acceptance letter to the university and accept the offer. There's no time, both the university and the secondary school will be resuming on 12/10/2020 and I have to make a choice between now and Thursday. My fiancee is already calling herself "wife of a lecturer" and threatening that she will quit the relationship if I did not accept the university offer. My mind is in the secondary school because there is free lunch and N150,000.00 housing allowance per year, but the university doesn't give lunch and housing allowance.

Should I go and become Mr. Lecturer and sacrifice my secondary school benefits?
.

Continue in the secondary school, do your PhD and reapply to another university.

hmmm private uni, na uni? They will owe you oh. Alot. I know a lecturer that worked for Novena Uni. He is stilled owed 2years of salaries.... So continue with your private school, it's obvious your fiance is not reasoning deep, they just here lecturer and she is carried away. I bet she will be the one to taunt you when you accept the job and the salaries won't be enough to take care of those stuffs you use to take care of, or when there is no salaries for a while.

In this case, I think you are the smartest person in this matter, so listen to yourself, and not somepeople who want to fill their selfish prides.

For me 1st decision is to end your relationship with that your fiancee. Someone that manipulative and unsupportive is a recipe for disaster. How can a job make you threaten to leave your fiancee not even boyfriend. Thats a huge red flag to me definitely.

As per your job, stay in the secondary school, get your phd and apply for a better lecturing job in the future. In the end do what makes you happy. But that fiancee watch her well.

88k job? And you're even considering it?
Stay in that Sec. School. You'll most likely get a job in a Federal or State University even without a Ph.D.
If you go for the lecturing job because of your fiancee, she'll most probably leave because of hunger. 88k can't satisfy a woman of her type. She's still with you, because you're earning a better in your current job.

The secondary school pay is good. But like someone said earlier, you won't teach these kids forever. Which I will say it's true because by the time you achieve your doctorate degree, you would still want to leave. Why not leave now that you'd be in a better space for salary increase and all other benefits.

My take, go with the lecturing job!

I would advice you go for the lecturing job

There's high chances of salary increment in universities
Also if you know your onions there's also high chances of you becoming a senior lecturer within time

Also you have more time as a lecturer to start up a business to support your self and family

You get to meet a lot of influential people since its a private university
If you behave like the "Nigerian Lecturer" You'll make it big time if you know what I mean grin

Secondary school job isn't secured at all as you can easily be replaced at any slightest issue, But its all about fulfillment. If you feel fulfilled there you can as well stay back
and he has said it all.

The University that said you cannot start your PHD until after 3years is very anti progressive and more or less a slave camp.

My brother , its a very odd your fiancé threaten to call it quite if you didn't accept a lecturing offer, for a private university to offer 88k is very poor, its obvious you really don't want to quit the secondary school now, and your dad supporting you base on his experience, You can apply for other universities for beta offer, be very mindful of any gf who threathen to quit relationship because of her own selfish showoff reason neglecting the implication.

I will advice you remain in your secondary school and do your PhD . In 3 years time, you should be through with your PhD than become a lecturer and not start your PhD till 3 years time with limited funds. When you have your PhD, you can apply for job in any University of your choice. The University is giving you the condition of not doing your PhD until 3years time because thy don't want to be involved in any substantial salary increment. That's slavery.

Depends on the university... A lot of private universities are glorified secondary schools. So, why leave one private secondary school doing you well, to another private secondary school??!

Those typing about meeting influential people in that private university have no idea of what they are dreaming.
I see it ending in tears if you make the switch to that private university as a lecturer right now, it's not even Federal university sef.

Pls forget about your family stand on this, follow your heart and your heart is in the secondary school.

For University, I will advise you upgrade your current educational status

Though you will make more money in the university but then, just follow your heart
Re: Secondary School Teaching Vs Lecturing: Which Of These Two Jobs Should I Choose? by kingi777: 11:28am On Oct 07, 2020
My advice:
1. Make inquiries about the university. Is the university a standard one or a mushroom one? Do they pay regularly? But even if they do all these, why should they have timetable for lecturers? Caging you means you're there for slavery.
2. Why must they peg your time to pursue your PhD at 3 years service with them? With MSc, you get employed as Assistant Lecturer/Lecturer II depending on your profession. With your MSc you can progress to Lecturer 1 and that's all. Based on NUC regulation, you can't progress to Senior Lecturer levels without PhD. Lecturing is sweet from these Senior Lecturer, Associate Prof and full Prof levels.
3. Is the private university close to the secondary school? If close, can you get part-time lecturing there even if without pay? That appointment letter as part-time lecturer will help you a lot in future.
4. For your PhD, you need finance; the secondary will help you to start. While doing the PhD, be applying for university jobs with your CV having PhD in view which is an added advantage. If God helps you to get state or federal university, you can even get TETFUND scholarship for your research locally or internationally. As a PhD researcher, you could be lucky to get many research opportunities abroad. Your supervisors can recommend you for opportunities too. Don't be caged!
