Emir8:hmmm private uni, na uni? They will owe you oh. Alot. I know a lecturer that worked for Novena Uni. He is stilled owed 2years of salaries.... So continue with your private school, it's obvious your fiance is not reasoning deep, they just here lecturer and she is carried away. I bet she will be the one to taunt you when you accept the job and the salaries won't be enough to take care of those stuffs you use to take care of, or when there is no salaries for a while. In this case, I think you are the smartest person in this matter, so listen to yourself, and not somepeople who want to fill their selfish prides. 2 Likes |

88k job? And you're even considering it? Stay in that Sec. School. You'll most likely get a job in a Federal or State University even without a Ph.D. If you go for the lecturing job because of your fiancee, she'll most probably leave because of hunger. 88k can't satisfy a woman of her type. She's still with you, because you're earning a better in your current job. |

The secondary school pay is good. But like someone said earlier, you won't teach these kids forever. Which I will say it's true because by the time you achieve your doctorate degree, you would still want to leave. Why not leave now that you'd be in a better space for salary increase and all other benefits. My take, go with the lecturing job! ~Skedy |

My brother , its a very odd your fiancé threaten to call it quite if you didn't accept a lecturing offer, for a private university to offer 88k is very poor, its obvious you really don't want to quit the secondary school now, and your dad supporting you base on his experience, You can apply for other universities for beta offer, be very mindful of any gf who threathen to quit relationship because of her own selfish showoff reason neglecting the implication. |

I will advice you remain in your secondary school and do your PhD . In 3 years time, you should be through with your PhD than become a lecturer and not start your PhD till 3 years time with limited funds. When you have your PhD, you can apply for job in any University of your choice. The University is giving you the condition of not doing your PhD until 3years time because thy don't want to be involved in any substantial salary increment. That's slavery. |

Depends on the university... A lot of private universities are glorified secondary schools. So, why leave one private secondary school doing you well, to another private secondary school??! |
Re: Secondary School Teaching Vs Lecturing: Which Of These Two Jobs Should I Choose? by Heavance(m): 11:20am On Oct 07, 2020 |
Emir8:With what you have added so far, I would pray you remain with the secondary school. Those typing about meeting influential people in that private university have no idea of what they are dreaming. I see it ending in tears if you make the switch to that private university as a lecturer right now, it's not even Federal university sef. |

Re: Secondary School Teaching Vs Lecturing: Which Of These Two Jobs Should I Choose? by kingi777: 11:28am On Oct 07, 2020 |
My advice: 1. Make inquiries about the university. Is the university a standard one or a mushroom one? Do they pay regularly? But even if they do all these, why should they have timetable for lecturers? Caging you means you're there for slavery. 2. Why must they peg your time to pursue your PhD at 3 years service with them? With MSc, you get employed as Assistant Lecturer/Lecturer II depending on your profession. With your MSc you can progress to Lecturer 1 and that's all. Based on NUC regulation, you can't progress to Senior Lecturer levels without PhD. Lecturing is sweet from these Senior Lecturer, Associate Prof and full Prof levels. 3. Is the private university close to the secondary school? If close, can you get part-time lecturing there even if without pay? That appointment letter as part-time lecturer will help you a lot in future. 4. For your PhD, you need finance; the secondary will help you to start. While doing the PhD, be applying for university jobs with your CV having PhD in view which is an added advantage. If God helps you to get state or federal university, you can even get TETFUND scholarship for your research locally or internationally. As a PhD researcher, you could be lucky to get many research opportunities abroad. Your supervisors can recommend you for opportunities too. Don't be caged! 1 Like |
