Hello Nairalander,
I really need advice concerning making a choice between the two jobs before me. My family members are divided over which job I should choose.

I'm working in a highbrow secondary school and my start up salary was N75,000. After three years, my salary is now N96,000.00. I just got a lecturing job with a private university and my gross salary according to the appointment letter is N88,000.00. My father wants me to continue with my teaching in the secondary school but my mother and fiancee are pressuring me to write acceptance letter to the university and accept the offer. There's no time, both the university and the secondary school will be resuming on 12/10/2020 and I have to make a choice between now and Thursday. My fiancee is already calling herself "wife of a lecturer" and threatening that she will quit the relationship if I did not accept the university offer. My mind is in the secondary school because there is free lunch and N150,000.00 housing allowance per year, but the university doesn't give lunch and housing allowance.

Should I go and become Mr. Lecturer and sacrifice my secondary school benefits?
You can NEVER EVER COMPARE A PRIVATE JOB TO A FEDERAL IF IT'S A FEDERAL UNIVERSITY.. Even so if it's a private university there are better prospects compared to a private school. Bro, go for the lecturing job you will not regret it.

Here is the time schedule:

Secondary school: 8:00AM - 4:00PM
University: 8:00AM - 6:00PM

I used to teach some Lebanese and Pakistanis children private lessons from 4:30 to 6:30 in which I make up to N58,000 a month. I have to sacrifice that too if I accept the university work
Take the lecturing job. There are chances for career progression there.

More so are you sure that Lady loves you, she sounds like an opportunist?

Guy please if u can listen to me please do.... Don't accept that private uni job... The pay is low and can't pay bills... Why are u even considering the private uni?? Here is a close comparison between both job
Salary wise : the secondary school won
Accommodation allowance: sec school won
Staff welfare: secondary school won

Ask urself if u pay rentage with ur salary In the private uni what is lefthuh At least ur 90k plus from the sec school is entirely ur own u don't spend it on accommodation.
Forget those saying job prospect, improvement, growth, job security blah blah blah... The truth is SOME of those private uni is just an advance secondary School period!!! All the disadvantages the secondary school possess, the private uni possess it too, truth be told... Go for what pay the bills and gives u better saving power. Afterall u aren't gonna do the job forever.
If I were u I will quickly break up with that girl coz she doesn't have ur welfare in mind, but just want the name of a lecturer wife.... Outside lecturer as a name what else is beneficial to u in that job..huh Ask urself...

Can you teach these kids forever? No!
Think about career prospects rather than the current pay!
Do you know how lecturers make their money?
From sales of hand out and textbook
Imagine you get to sell handouts at the rate of 1k to 100 students per department and you're lecturing about 5 departments (100Level)
Do the math
As a lecturer you can't possibly have class from 8-6PM
Every school session ends by 4pm
I don't want to including sorting grin because that's corruption
Anyways its still your choice to make
Just lent my advice
Lecturers are forbidden to sell handout now in public universities .
. They can only give a copy and students photocopy it... But they cannot sell... If u do u get sacked.. things have changed..@Emir8 just clarifying what he wrote here not to give u a wrong impression

I left a high paying job cos it didn't offer me great career prospects. Don't b tempted by money for now. If you want to get lecturing job in public universities later, experience in the private university will count.

I've now gotten a job with better career prospect, people called me names when I quit the former one

Chairman run away from that University, a school that wants You to work for three years before going for PhD wants to enslave You.
Infact they are slave masters, reaping where they didn't show.
Abeg do your PhD and get a lecturing job with a government University or any big organization.

Thanks dear
some of these private universities are glorified secondary schools, consider the odds, u won't have time for your PhD until 3years time, you will start from scratch to becoming relevant there cos u are a junior staff, u may not be allowed to sell handouts cos these private unis have stringent laws, most of their courses may not be accredited, u may fall into temptations with d female students and lecturers, no housing allowance,

As for the secondary school, u are already established there with better pay, annual housing allowance and time to further your education, u stand d chance of gaining favours from parents of the wards in your care which may change your life forever buh in d uni, no one cares cos the students are adults, as for job security, I think it's higher in d secondary school cos your replacement may not come easily.

In conclusion, stay where you are, forget about d reputation for now, bigger chances would come buh certainly not a private uni, except it's Covenant, Landmark or Redeem.
Re: Secondary School Teaching Vs Lecturing: Which Of These Two Jobs Should I Choose? by KayyDee:
Hello @OP

First, I want to say that it depends on the kind of person you are.
If you are an ambitious type (like myself) you would realize that ambitiousness does not look primal at money, but achievement, fulfilment, and steady growth.

Having said that, each option has its PROS & CONS.

For the Secondary School, the only PRO i Immediately see is the higher pay/other benefits (which I consider just a slight financial advantage)

However, I dont know how that Secondary School will afford to pay you as much as say 250k in the next 7 years.
Because, the truth is that yes they will increase you r salary, but they are not government owned, so it can't be guaranteed nor necessarily commensurate with the time you've spent in there.

And don't forget that sooner, 96k wont mean much to you as you marry and have a few kids to your family.

But when it cones to Lecturing work; initially, especially on financial grounds, it seemed quite the lesser offer. Then, there's this issue of being a private University...and we know that since it's not Government owned, it can be a bit dicey when it comes to steady promotions, and how much each promotions are worth in salary increments.

But the major advantages of a university (even a private one) are listed below:

1) You are more likely to grow with additional education, like getting your PHD.
Besides, when you have that PHD, you can more easily get a much higher placement in another university (even Federal) seeking to fill Lecturing openings/Positions in say, Lecture 1, Lecturer 2 or even A senior Lecture.
These positions i listed above are well paid in most Schools.

2) Again, you get to meet rich and influential people whom you teach their wards ( although I imagine that your current Secondary school job may be affording you this same privilege already and perhaps, even better at secondary school level, giving that the kids are still young, and so, parents tend to hitch them up with a good teacher at this leve l for better care)

3) As a lecture, you will have much time to pursue other endeavours (even if the chance is not there right now as a beginner, you'll figure it out sooner as you progress)

4) You could become an author easily and sell your books. If you are in the sciences, you could become a major researcher, and that could open you up to international repute, and could bring you research grants too.

5) Finally, being a lecturer places you higher in the society, regardless of the salary, and so it could build you up to a better equipped man. This could help you land better appointments or positions in the future.

Very Importantly;
Before choosing the Private University, be sure they are doing well as a School, I mean, already well established.

So, that you don't get in, and realize that they tend to owe salaries at the end of the month, or that most of their courses are not yet accredited.
All these may mean that the university could close up any time, and you will feel worse, having left a seemingly better paying job for it.

Just carry out some research about the school, and how reputable and suitable they are for your General life plans, and do your due diligence.

However, in all these, you should follow your own heart the most. Some people prefer teaching and mentoring younger children, as against teaching in the university.
So, if you are like that, and much more happy in the Secondary School, then stay on, and you will most probably be happy and fulfilled in the future.

But, avoid using current pay package as your major reason for reaching any conclusions, for tables can so easily turn
.

Finally, your Fiancee is only doing what some women tend to do (preferring to be called a wife of someone seemingly more respected in the society)

But threatening to leave a relationship on that grounds is all shades of wrong, and I totally frown at such.
Hence, I have no reason to try and convince such a woman to stay, if she's no longer comfortable with me and whatever LEGITIMATE stuff I choose to do with my own life.

It's your life, it's your decision to take, although it's a good thing to consult people in your life about important life decisions like this one, so as to get their input, listen to their legitimate concerns, allay their fears and convince them where needed, or maybe amend where needed. By so doing, reassuring them of your respect for their opinion, and because good communication is the lifeblood of any relationship.

But to arm-twist you into choosing what they like, instead of what you like, is a no no for me.
So, be strong-hearted about what you love and choose, regardless of what others want to cajole or emotionally blackmail you into choosing.

So, think deeply with all these points I listed above, and if you are honest to yourself, you will easily come to a solution good for your heart and life too.

Pls stay with the Secondary school, it has more prospects, better pay plus housing, flexibility and also a chance to do your PhD.

With your PhD, you ll get better offers in time and working in the Secondary school which allows you run your PhD will save you time. As for your Gf, I know she means well for you but honestly, better offers are coming.

Bro, I know you must have gotten lots of replies by now, but I pray you see this one.

Before you decide, there are two main factors I need you to consider;

1. Where does your passion truly lie? Or is it only about the money?

2. This is the most important, I want you to project yourself 10yrs down the line. Which one of the 2 job prospects do you see taking you farther? Remember, it is not only about today, tomorrow is much more important.

I pray you see this. Shalom

I wish I can read all the comments. However, I have read a number of them. Some got me laughing for a number of reasons.

To start with, there is asymmetric information following your submission. To that effect, let me assume you have MSc given that most private Universities in Nigeria in recent times, hardly employ BSc for lectureship position.

If my assumption is 100%, then we can proceed.

For your gross pay to be N88,000 with MSc as Assistant Lecturer, it is glaring clear that the said University is either located at South-East or South-South. You might want to ask, why do I say so? The answer is straight. Private Universities in South-West Nigeria adopt federal Universities scale in paying academics (lecturers), except for some few mission Universities such as Covenant University and Landmark University that pay academics, federal scale plus 10% in addition to accommodation suitable to the employee family status.

Back to the issue on ground. Some people including your fiancee might want to see opportunity with the private University offer. The argument can be premised on the fact that nominal wage should not always be the basis of evaluating job offer. Here, I share their thesis. However, I am to advise you as one who has experienced the two scenario presented by you. And who also has a number of friends who have taken decision in this direction in time past. Some are regretting till date.

For your record, there is no career prospect for teachers in affluent secondary schools. Most of the proprietress/proprietors see the teachers as tools. What they pay the teachers are very insignificant in relation to the school fee they collect. You can attest to this. What you call N95,000 is a peanut relative to the millions of naira each child pays for three terms. One thing good about their schools is that they hardly sack teachers once the teachers are given them results. Their parlance is "We do not reward effort but result." If yours allows the teachers to have access to their students parents, then the owner of the school is a very good person. The second is that they hardly owe teachers. Of course why should they considering the millions of naira the collect from each student. Teachers in those schools can hardly earn in a year a student school fee for a year (three terms). For instance, your annual salary is N1,140,000. Prove me wrong if a student school fee in the school for three terms is not far more. Lastly, if you can, avoid the afternoon lunch you see as blessing. Let me not discuss on that.

For the private Universities except mission Universities, some of them hardly pay salary for months. Their work load often times frustrate academics who thought that with the job, they will proceed for their PhD. They hardly employ sufficient academics for each department as a result of running cost. Hence, you might see a scenario where an academic is assigned five courses or thereabout to take in a semester.

Lastly, your father is looking at the money. Your mom and babe are looking at the ego.

I am a lecturer in a federal university currently studying abroad. When I saw your comparison, I almost call you a fool for deliberating a university job over secondary school job until I saw this. The private university is not towards your best interest. A university employer is suppose to hammer on faculty growth not the other way round. Don't even imagine you can get extra money from this university. You would be sacked! And why are they giving you such long hours of work( 10 hours per day). This is the kind of place that would use you and drain you. I will advice you go talk to new employees in the school to see are they are coping. Please go for the exploits with your fiancee so she will get firsthand account. She is scared you making the wrong decision while she is alive. Right now, she is sold on names. Of course, she won't leave you. I think it is best for you to continue your secondary school job and start studying toward your PhD. Write standard text books in your subject area. I believe you will get a good university after your PhD. Most importantly, you should be looking towards writing GRE and applying to US universities. PhD students are paid like N500k monthly to be a student. Follow the application process on TRAVELS
Op, diligently consider this advice.

Thanks Mayflowa.

I will advise you to listen to your father, continue with the secondary school and aim to become a principal in one of those aisen schools. Most of those private university can own you for months, I am talking from experience. To make money through text books may be nearly impossible because they don't have much students as compare to public universities. Why not continue with the secondary school, get your PhD then apply in public universities and by his grace you may get job. Listen to your father.

I would have asked you to leave the secondary school, take the offer of the university and make sure you use them to build a career in the academic profession but you see at this stage you ought to have a dream or goal so let your goal or dream drive you. Mind you some private secondary schools are way better than some private universities. Dont let your decision based on the ego of being called a lecturer o. Who ego help?

On a more serious note maintain the secondary school job. I c room for progress.bpaying u 96k shows they r a high brow school. Keep it.

Take the lecturer job, it will open new job paths. You already have experience as a secondary school teacher, and can get those type of jobs again in the future, the lecturer role will open up the same path for you, and you can in the future pursue both types of job.
