My 3-Year-Old Son Can't Read Or Write Letters, Please Help by kenny1111: 3:48pm On Oct 22, 2020
Good afternoon everyone,

please I need advice from all parents and Educators and parents on Nairanland. today I just realized my 3years old son cant even read Letters A to F talk less of A to Z but can read Figure 1 to 10, I am seriously worried.

I don't stay at home except for weekends as I am working outside my state, but due to the curfew I find my way back home yesterday so I was able to discover this problem in the early hours of today.

I know the mother is trying cos I have seen different live videos where she was teaching him and working on his assignment, most times I pity the boy so much because of the beating from his mum alone makes me sick but I can't really complain since I know is for his own good and I know how stressful it is for a mother with 2 kids to manage her time and all that....

I called his teacher immediately and she told me my son will be going to Nursery class when the present term is over due to his age, sadly she didn't say things I expect to hear from her so I told her I will visit the school once the curfew is over, I need explanation, is private school that bad these days ? my son can't even write 2 and 3

I have bought Video CD, bought many play book materials containing letters and figures displayed boldly, I bought counting and so on when he was 2 years so i expect a better result by now.

pls sir and ma, I need help on how to guide this boy to learn better, what should I do and how should I go about it.

Note: any time I am home, I always go through his books, assignments and read his school rhymes for him.

pls Help

Oga, abeg, make you take am easy on that tod.

Apart from the fact say the pikin never even reach age to dey stress unnecessarily over A, B, C, and D sef, you suppose don know say school no be for everybody. Abi you no dey this same world wey we dey live?

You've mentioned how the kid is good with numbers. How about you take that as his forte and encourage him more in that line.

I won't say he could be autistic or a special needs kid yet for a lack of any professional diagnosis, but I'm sure there isn't anything wrong with your son.

You guys need to allow the kid be a kid and quit with the mental, emotional, and physical abuses on such a young fragile mind.

Please,

Stop stressing the boy. He's a child. He is not writing common entrance tomorrow morning. He doesn't have WAEC exams next week.
It's okay for him to be lazy at holding pencil. In fact, his fingers muscles are strained holding them. Let him go to school to play. Make learning at home fun for him.
He'd make a professor, don't worry but just not at the age of five. Give him at least twenty more years.

3 years.

He is still young biko.

All these private schools with overstressing kids.

Don't worry he would catch up soon. Some kids are like that. .it would be like magic when he eventually starts writing and identifying letters and numbers.

Oh sorry sir you are facing this, but you shouldn't worry much,my thoughts was he doesn't read and write at all. Any child that is good with numbers is a smart child,am not saying this to pacify you am only saying the truth. He is still very young. Tell the mum to ease up on the beating, she should talk with him more, get educational cartoons. Observe him for now what are his interest, that way you can help navigate alphabets. Don't be worried it doesn't call for alarm. This children are smart than you think. Don't be surprised he even reads and write elsewhere. But observe his interest and see how you can incorporate the alphabets there.

Are you a Russian
ABI where are you rushing to

If he is just moving to nursery classes then he is still okay with what he knows already.
Let me do a short breakdown for you
Playgroup/kindergarten (1yearold) -all they go to school to do is play sing rhymes and sleep
Prenusery1/kg1 (2year old)- learn life basic skills, greetings etc sing rhymes play and sleep. Some schools may introduce them to the alphabet but they don't really expect them to Know it
Prenusery2/kg2(3year old)- they start giving them pencil so their wrist will be trained to hold it well, they start reading the ABC so they will get used to it

Then Nursery 1 and 2 by now they would have known how to hold a pencil properly here they will start learning numbers up to 100/200 so when they get to nursery 2 the will start all these 2/3 letter word.

Just keep calm and find time for your kid. Monitor his improvement and communicate well with his teacher

He go det okay. Let him reach Nursery 1st

keep quiet!
Every child learn at their own pace! If you aren't a parent just shut it instead of making this op feel something is wrong with the child.

nothing is wrong with that child. he isn't a slow learner and he isn't anything. he is a child and should be allowed to learn at their pace.

My children at 3plus can't write anything but check back at 4plus and see them reading literature .Theyd always look me in the face and say I don't want to write anything and go back to playing.
Playing is fundamental to a child's mental development.

you the father should engage him and plz play with him. Talk about his favourite cartoon or game of interest and infuse it in what you want to teach them . If you shout or flog you instil fear in them and the aim is defeated. I gist pjmasks, Messi goes to Okido, word world and others and before you know it I divert to numbers and letters. It piques their interest and makes teaching easy for me.

If it is1 or 2 letters that was learnt in a day, praise him and repeat again 2moro.

Again, nothing is wrong with him. you ppl should stop stressing him. Don't listen to those who tell you that their 2 yr olds are already writing up-to 500.

I'm Owlette while my learner is Catboy. lol

Hehehe grin.

I had to start by laughing because,I experienced something similar or worst.

Mine, when I was in primary 1,I could remember vividly that saying A to Z was an illusion. My siblings tried their best and gave up,but not my mum.

My mum instead spoiled me with more goodies. She made sure my lunch box was filled with my favorite snacks(Nasco biscuit and fanta),but trust poor me to come home with a heart wrecking report card as we use to call it then.

My sad ordeal continued until primary 3.As if the scales of ignoramus was expunged from my life.
I moved from the bottom to 8th position for the first time in my life, and the rest is now history.

In fact, while my mate's were going for law and other courses in the university, yours faithfully enrolled for philosophy.

For me you don't have anything to worry about. Just encourage your child in every little effort he makes.Capitalise on his strength and you will see him blossom.

Here are some few hint
- Please ask your wife to stop beating him, because it will instill fear in him, he will become frighten to learn because his young mind isn't conditioned to learned under such duress.

-Solution

2. Promise to reward him with his favourite snack anytime each time he gets right what you teaching him, it will motivate him and his concentration and focus towards learning new thing will be high.

3. your son is a slow learner but has got a very wild imagination in his head and as such he may not catch up immediately the way u imagined.

- Solution
4. Get educational tools for him, buy video cd where those cartoons sings and rhyme with numbers and letters, and see him sing along, let him watch it daily and all time and u will be amazed at the transformation. Shalom cool

Cut the guy some slack, this is 2020, he's been home over 7 months already.

Did you get a tutor during the lockdown?

My son is also 3 yrs and I honestly had the same frustration too when he clocked three in June. I got him a tutor then and I'm amazed with the progress he's made so far.

Today, though unable to read A-Z off heart, he can read them pointing at them, identifying their sounds and words starting with them. He can now count 1-40.

I already told the tutor I'm not interested in school this year anymore as we've changed the 3x class to 5x a week class since 2020 has been such a mess.

Your son would pick, but you and your wife must be ready to make sacrifices and take part in his learnings.

As a kid, i had issues with numbers and reading as well.....

At some point, my dad gave my younger brother and i money to count..... I was 7yrs[primary 3] and he was 6yrs[primary 2]..... He counted it perfectly and i couldn't... My dad threatened to throw me outta the 2nd floor if i couldn't count the money.... I tried severally but couldn't.... He was so dissapointed and shouted at me all night...... But my mum kept on consoling me and told me I'd get better with time. She NEVER scolded me, not even once..... My siblings actually felt something was wrong with me.....

My dad later changed us to another school where i repeated primary 3.....

And guess what...... I became a mathematician before primary 6..... I was able to read anything readable.....[I aslo went for some mathematics competitions]

I'm now a mechanical engineer and doing very okay for myself....[i aslo taught myself python programming and a lil bit of web designing]...

That your child might actually turnout to be a genius in life.... Intellectually, some kids develop very early.... Some develop late..... Or very late..... Scolding that child will put fear in him and prevent him from learning at his own pace....

The fear my dad put in me actually delayed my learning..... Thank God for my mum oooh...... I understand what my dad was trying to do back then.... He wanted me to learn fast but didn't know my ability to learn back then as a 7 year old was quite slow.....

You're expecting too much from that baby at that tender age.

Rome was not built in a day.

At 3, you shouldn't be worried about this, it's not an issue.

Can he recite rhymes, poems, etc properly?

Can he answer simple questions about himself?

Dear OP, there's nothing wrong with your kid. He's learning at his own pace like someone mentioned earlier. One shocker: Buying a lot of books for your kiddo is not going to magically transform him into reading whiz. In fact, buy him fewer books, but ensure the books you buy him are colourful, with few words written in bold scripts, pictionary and suitable for his age, and most importantly have contemporary learning contents. With technology, learning has become easier than before. Hook up your laptop to your TV, and let your kid watch some amazing, fun and educational channels on YouTube. YouTube has an immense collection of learning materials for kids. Another thing you can do is to buy English alphabet flashcards or better still print them yourself at this link.

https://www.flashcards.pics

Lastly, tell madam to ease off on beating the kid because she's unwittingly doing more harm than good to him. All the best to your kid.
