I called his teacher immediately and she told me my son will be going to Nursery class when the present term is over due to his age, sadly she didn't say things I expect to hear from her so I told her I will visit the school once the curfew is over, I need explanation, is private school that bad these days ? my son can't even write 2 and 3

I have bought Video CD, bought many play book materials containing letters and figures displayed boldly, I bought counting and so on when he was 2 years so i expect a better result by now.

pls sir and ma, I need help on how to guide this boy to learn better, what should I do and how should I go about it.

OP please chill, your kid is perfectly ok. I couldn't read/write till I was 6, yes 6. And you know what, I was one of the best graduating pupil in my secondary school and I had 2.1 (strong one) in computer and mathematics in my university days. Kids are not even taught how to read and write, in Germany and Austria, till certain age (5 or 6). Have you heard of the German machine and technology?

Stop bothering your mind and disturbing the kid. Slow learners are usually the future geniuses.

You need to engage son outside electronic world. Get him plain papers, notebook and marker let him be using to scribe things around with time he will learn.

Make use of alphabetic sets and signs to help him with his qualitative reasoning. Parents these days make the mistake of using electronic means to teach their kids but trust me 90% of the time the kid is marveling at how the person talking is in the box than learning what is being taught.

Another thing... Let his mother stop beating him and rather employ the use of rewards. No one learns through pain and lastly let him learn at his own pace.

Speaking from what I've seen.. Some kids y'all tag as dullards are intelligent they just need a different form of approach to assimilate and comprehend things..most Nigerian parents don't even know that dyslexia is a thing and no matter how u nag or beat such a kid, if the specialized method of teaching him isn't adapted all efforts would be futile and the kid's potential wasted!

Better allow your kid to grow first.

Leave the boy alone. My boy couldn't write much at age 3. One year later, he can write 1-100, one-1 to ten-10, 2 multiplication table, Aa-ZZ etc.


For now, his brain cant take so much but as he grows, he will find learning natural.

I perceive fear due to the beating from the mother.
Now that you are home, show him love talk to him, you have a lot of talking to do so as to build confidence in him. discourage all negative information he may have received from the mother. I see a brilliant boy coming up to make history in your generation.
Pray with him and always let him be around you. Build confidence in him and pls do this in relationship with the mother. Encourage the mother to always tell him that she loves him.
Do this and thank me later.

If your wife was a teacher, taught my child and beats him like that, I swear, I'll make sure she sleeps in army barracks for a month so that she can receive sense. Some parents are too abusive for my liking.

Few years ago after my waec i went to stay with my uncle pending admission and i discovered his then five year old kid couldn't say the two letter words, states and capital and other things a child his age can read wholeheartedly.

I also found out that his mother made every home lesson she has with him a millitary exercise (different kinds of discipline instrument), verbal abuse, she also went as far as telling his home tutor not to hesitate to flog him. With all this u would expect the child to hate book work.

firstly when i engaged her about it she said she knows whats best for her son and am only a teenager what do i know.

To cut the stories short i took up tutoring the child with just my phone/laptop before convincing her to enrol the child is a better school which which uses the fun way to approach learning.

Today That boy is 9 years he just wrote his FSLC and ever since primary 3 has been taking the first

You should visits the school and monitor the surroundings yourself! Moreso you need a good talk time with the teacher and hear the report about your child readiness and difficulties.
Ensure any school you put your children, has a good record.
Last option consult specialist to understand if your child is a special child and needs special attention.

nothing is wrong with that child. he isn't a slow learner and he isn't anything. he is a child and should be allowed to learn at their pace.


My children at 3plus can't write anything but check back at 4plus and see them reading literature .Theyd always look me in the face and say I don't want to write anything and go back to playing.
Playing is fundamental to a child's mental development.

you the father should engage him and plz play with him. Talk about his favourite cartoon or game of interest and infuse it in what you want to teach them . If you shout or flog you instil fear in them and the aim is defeated.

If it is1 or 2 letters that was learnt in a day, praise him and repeat again 2moro.

Again, nothing is wrong with him. you ppl should stop stressing him. Don't listen to those who tell you that their 2 yr olds are already writing up-to 500.

I would gladly allow him to just play around and make learning more fun.

At those age they are still just developing their mental skills and no pressure should be exerted on them. You can start worrying if he can't memorise basic things at 5 or 6.

Pls don't take his childhood from him in d name of school, at 3 na watch Barney n friends eat food sing n sleep Dem dey do for school. U at what agedid u start going to school sef? If he is the first child sometimes you Will discover the junior one is Abit sharper, all na stage, because he really didn't interact much with everyone

Nothing is wrong with your boy...

Tell your wife to stop beating him, he will not learn by beating and shouting... Go to the school and talk to the class teacher to help you put more efforts in teaching him...

I will also advise you change the school and also confirm that the boy is not passing through stress, A child of 3yrs old should not be spending more than 5hrs in school (8am to 1pm)


I hope your wife is not the type that drops him off in school as early as 7am and pick him up by 5 or 6 in the evening?

Try and see things through by yourself... Sometimes all in the struggle to make ends meet, we tend to do it at the expense of the care and conducive environment that this innocent kids need.

You have raised an important most of these private schools that have little kids hardly provide the right environment for this children, they are not even supposed to be in a 'school structure' till primary 1 maybe. They should be in a sort of home/school learn/play environment and very few preschools, nursery, creche provide that.

A child of that age should be able to have nap time, watch cartoons, take a bath , things he can easily do at home. You now take a little child to a school where he can't even rest and he will stay there for 7-8 hours, the child will be so stressed.

I understand that we parents have to work hard but the least we can do is take those children to a place that has a homey feel.

All.these parents trying to thrust and burden their incompetencies on their children. Why don't you teach him skills like painting, drawing.

You can buy old toy or appliance get a screwdriver open it, figure out how it works with him. stretch his imagination.

With the way the world is going now where there is emphasis on skills over certificates, you are still beating your child to learn ABC that he would later know.

It takes patience to teach kids o, I know this because I once taught nursery 2 for about 2 years and the first time I taught in one of the school where I worked, the pupils knew close to nothing and they were way above 3 years of age, some were even 7 years old in nursery two. It took love and and a whole lot of patience for them to improve, the first week ehn, I was frustrated but within 3 weeks these kids picked up drastically. I think the mother doesn't have patience neither does she know how to handle kids academically, get a lesson teacher to take your child, with love and patience the child should improve. Also, do know that we all learn at different pace and beating kids doesn't always help.

Op, at what are dis you start primary school ? If you were born in my old days, u woukd agree with me that your son is ok. There's nothing to worry about... remember, we do not have equal understanding, kids develop differently

Pls don’t put pressure on an innocent kid. Let a child be a child and stop trying to force your expectations on him/her. Am pissed. This are the kind of parent that compare kids making them lose there self esteem. Let him catch up at his own pace. Adopt a strategy. Take note of his talent or things he shows interest him then guide and encourage him. Plenty 1st class graduate with masters degree are on the street without jobs . All Na grace of God.
