I think it’s a sound investment decision. Ever since infusion of NIPP capacity into the system, the issue of power generation capacity had largely been solved. More importantly is the fact that the technology of scaling up generating capacity has largely been domesticated as demonstrated by Azura plant and other smaller plants. So if you have the technology and the capacity and it remained largely stranded, why don’t you export it to other countries that lacks capacity? You earn revenue, you create more space for the private sector to thrive and it’s the efficient way to go.
Following a cue from the success recorded by obj administration on the deregulation of telecommunication sector, gej administration decided to liberalize the power sector. It was a sound policy decision and it was easy to fly because everyone saw the success of telecommunication deregulation. But the implementation was the problem especially in the distribution aspect of the chain. The first problem was that they replaced public monopoly with private monopoly. At the onset of the liberalization of telecom, we were made to believe that per second billings was not possible until the arrival of competitors. The same thing is playing out in the distribution chain of the power sector now. The second problem was that the distribution and generation chain was hijacked by opportunists. Firms without technical and financial capacity but with strong connects were allocated slots. So what will now happen is that they will go to local banks crowding out the genuine deficit units, go to ADB, go and raise bonds and all manner of financial structuring to raise funds and pay for the assets.
After clinching the trophy, the first priority is to repay the loan and meanwhile the asset acquired is in a state of disrepair and deteriorating but you cannot default in loan repayment otherwise penalty charge applies so you have to leave one for the other. That is why you see all of them struggle and everyone is frustrated. They want to make the public pay for their acquisition of assets. In this circumstance, you cannot have any new investments
Once you have succeeded in deregulating and give private sector a space, in all honesty solution to power problem like brf said is not rocket science. I went for a meeting at West African Heath Organization Bobo - Dioulasso in 2006 and had a stopover at Ghana because I missed my connecting flight. A South African and I went out for a walk at night and the fellow was kind of disgusted at the sight of electricity cables running riot all over the place and I told him the same thing obtains in my country. He said they have started running underground cables in South Africa. Why can’t the government/private sector provide underground cabling infrastructure that can accommodate three or four power distribution operators?

Why not invest in transmission and distribution infrastructures. What's the issue with the policy makers in this clime.
Talk is cheap, after they have invested you will not want to pay your electricity bills, you will asking for Federal Government subsidy?

True! But the story has been the same since the PD-Pigs were granted the opportunity to change things since 1999. They have all succeeded in destroying so many destinies and the future of the country people.

Obasanjo, Yaradua and Jonathan met power generation at around 4000MW and left it at that after a combined 16 years in power. This man came in and suddenly, we have 13000MW. Is it his fault that your hero, Jonathan foolishly privatised distribution of the power in Nigeria? Is it his fault that Jonathan sold DISCOS to himself and his cronies at giveaway prices with 8 billion dollars take over clause?
I will say it again, the infrastructural developments we have seen under Buhari surpassed what Obj, Yaradua and Jonathan combined together gave us.
Ndigbo can vote for whoever they want, inconsequential 5 percentile!

Electricity is reel time, it needs competent people to handle it, when Jonathan goes and sells it to clueless people, the future looks bleak, it isn’t rocket science, but needs competent men of vision in control, not blind oblivious bats.

Much of Nigeria's generated electricity remain unused because the country is not able to distribute it as a result of poor transmission and distribution network, which has prompted it to sell to neighbouring countries.Other countries that get their supply from Nigeria include the Republic of Benin, which receives supplies of at least 80 per cent of the total quantum of electricity consumed in the country as well as Niger Republic and Togo.

Interesting. Wisdom is profitable to direct. This decision is unwise(foolish).

Improve transmission and distribution of unused megawatts of electricity by apportioning a percentage of the budget to them annually until completion.

It's pity u dnt understand the reason behind this connection. Nigeria is using River Niger to generate power in kainji which has its source from other countries, they'll not construct dam for irrigation to avoid obstructing the generation and part of the then deal is to connect those countries with the power generated.
Please use current Egypt-Ethiopia tension which may escalate to war; Egypt is using Nile River for irrigation and has the largest irrigation system in the world, now Ethiopia is constructing dam which may hinder Egypt's irrigation system and they're already at cold war.
Many educated Nigerians have zero knowledge of governance and international relations that's why we always embarass ourselves in our comments including the well educated ones.

The bold sentence is where the solution to our distribution problem lies as it offers users leverage to select operators base on performance, thereby enhancing healthy competition among distribution operators.
Prepaid metering will be a must for this to work effectively.

This government? You think that what you are seeing today just happened to be here today? No, that's a result of years of neglect. So, you might want to take a step back and analyse things differently.
Jonathan sold power sector to private individuals and they're not investing in it at all. The government can't take it back due to the outrageous cost of getting it back. That's a dilemma for the government.
Do you even know that DISCOs are rejecting power for distribution? But don't worry, this is a short term solution.

A very naturally obvious move. I hope the natural gas reserves last enough to the point Nigerian citizens are able to reap the benefits before and after the country is restructured. The busbar is infinite, it is the wheeling capacity and distribution network diversity that need investment and growth. Investments into the wheeling Capacity and distribution network diversity for their growth should partly come from sale of Connection agreement with Chad et al. and not directly into servicing PPAs. Some of those PPAs need to be reviewed. Azura I'm looking at you.

The Niger River is shared by nine countries in West and Central Africa, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria, Nigeria is obligated to provide those Countries that request electricity at international standard price, so that they don’t dam the River Niger again for electricity & irrigation, Egypt is presently having a problem with Ethiopia for it building a dam on the River Nile.

They have constant electricity, their transmission is up to par, thanks to the french, not these jagajaga you have in Nigeria, electricity is a business for the private sector, Nigerians don’t want to pay the international price, so you get what you pay for, get the pricing right for profitability, the private sector will fix the inadequacies, but Nigerians will not want to pay, the Military as a carrot to stay in office, subsidized everything for them, now today for them to pay the real cost for anything is a problem, they want it free, they even have a word for it “ awoof”.

This is terrible governance.

I can understand selling power to Benin republic, Niger and co based upon on the River Niger agreement.

But we have absolutely no reason to sell to Chad.
We need all the power in Nigeria. The effect on the economy is much bigger than the useless dollars Nigeria will get from them which they will still owe.

Nigeria is expanding north when we should be expanding south towards more productive ventures in Togo and Benin republic and central Africa.

Electricity is there, it is reel time it can’t be stored, as you generate you use, Nigeria’s problem like in everything is maintenance, transmission & distribution is the problem, all the Countries that have rights to the River Niger like us, have better electricity than Nigeria. Nigeria loses more electricity it generates, than it supplies.
