Some days back, the Nigerian social media users were dragging Desmond Elliot like Tiger generator because he tagged the youths as children. I was a bit indifferent about the whole brouhaha because wetin I dey think big pass all that noise and after watching the now infamous video, my indifference did not change.

Desmond later came out to apologise in tears for calling us yoots 'shidren', and while I was wondering aloud on this forum what the whole fuss about, my friend told me offline told me this-

"The problem is that the Nigerian social media space is now a lynch mob. Nobody is ready to listen to common sense, people are incapable of comprehending simple ideas and people are very intolerant of any view that does not agree with theirs

People are reacting to Desmond Elliot's video based on what they think he said, not based on what he actually said"

This friend shared the full YouTube clip with me and after watching it again, I realised how very toxic social media has become.

I stumbled on an article by Ivan-Whyte Eagle Lawson who has articulated my thoughts on this whole distracting nonsense featuring Desmond as the lead character.

While you people are here screaming at Desmond Elliot, hope you know the price of a bag of Onions has gone up from 3,500 to 7k, bag of local rice from 25 to 28k while sachet tomato don climb from 50 naira to 120 naira, amongst other demonic increases and it is not yet festive season o!

The writer is trying to sound "smart" but he's not. Some things I can pick up from his post

1) Sports gambling and gambling in general is big business everywhere in the world. If you think Bet 9Ja makes money because Nigerian youths are lazy, then you are not very smart.

2) People have a right to be upset by anything they want to, it's their God given right.

3) The fact that Desmond Elliot is more concerned about the "image" or negatively of Nigerians on social media than the living conditions of Nigerians in Nigeria justifies what every comes his way.

My friend sharap ya mouf! angry He was dragged on SM because that speech was patronizing of a demography that had just made more impact in 11 days than he had done, his whole years gaining weight in the Lagos HOA.
If he’d ever been a part of, or even thought of exercising of his rights in such manner in school, he’d have been a lot more respectful of those same youths. Nonsense!! angry

Put it however you like. Desmond Elliot made absolutely no sense in his speech. His speech didn't even address the crux of the matter at hand.

Next time he should learn to articulate his words without "emotions" so that he doesn't cause more problems than he is trying to solve.

I also followed his interview on arise tv... Nothing still made sense.

Didn't care to read those super long quotes simply because I've got a serious case of BULLSHITOPHOBIA. I'm unable to handle Bullshít. Those times that Nigerians were winning twitter battle back to back, none of them complained o, now is when we're criticizing them (although some people criticize anyhow but its out of anger that's been bottled up for years) they are complaining. I asked someone to tell me ONE good thing, just ONE good thing about Nigerian politicians and he couldn't say anything sensible, he was telling me they don't sag trousers and draw tattoos. Smh. All those years that Nigerians were BLASTING PDP, i did not hear their opposition party complain, infact they also threw in some jabs; it's your turn and now you're complaining. Na Elder wey behave himself we go respect. Shikena

Twitter has become a cult. The celebrities and influencers are now going into bully mood. They also do that to themselves. Twisting stories to fit their narrative.

I feel you are only defending him because he is a celebrity turned politician.

Desmond messed up, he was more concerned about belittling young people who said mean things on the internet than their lives being under threat. He assumes these problems that led to the protest and riots started overnight because of social media and wasn't because of decades of mismanagement.

How do you want us to respect an Oba that hides food meant for his people in his house?

At least he was right about one thing, there might not be a Nigeria soon, and it won't be the youths that killed it, it would be the current administration of kleptocrats.

Much that I tried to avoid social media discuss, but some news and headline will keep calling one attention.

Why will he refer the youths as children?.. He can't be more angrier than the same youths.

To what extent does he condemn the killing in Lekki Toll Gate?.

No one was born and named after as thugs, looters etc... If he has been deprived like other young Nigerians out there, he will understand that all that happens following Lekki shooting are situational and natural occurrence from the oppressed.

It is not only Nigeria has witnessed that in history. So, let all go back to the remote cause- Lekki Shooting and natural cause - hardship, acute poverty, inaccessible social amenities, and poor health care in the country.

Desmond Elliot and his defenders are all idiots for calling Nigerian youths children. It's such an imbecilic metaphor that casts doubts on their credentials as clear thinkers and progressive temperaments.
Would they rather have youths in the dark ages, shut out from the world , from technology, and revolving in the crypt of the ignorance?
He did not call Nigerian youths children.

He was referring to the young ones who were cursing.

Trust me there are internet users between the ages of 17 and 25 who curse out 50 year olds.

In this context they are children.

You can't call youth children, children is bellow 13 and youth is above 13 so if truly you and Desmond understand what you are saying you will know this is wrong, if you want to use children use it and if you want to use youth use it.. They are not the same Mr man, beside the English language has not change.. Oo wrong now

Or can you say all the children are youth?
