Intending UK Social Workers Get In! by TheLasyBuddha: 3:45pm On Oct 30, 2020
Several threads have been opened especially for professions that are highly sought-after abroad.
This is space for people who are Social workers in Nigeria who intend to practice in the UK and for practicing social workers abroad.

This thread would appreciate the experience, suggestions and opinions of people who are in health or related professions to enable us reach our goals in life.

Issues to discuss would be but not limited to:

• Proper visa application procedures, tips and tricks (Tier 2 General / Health and Care Visa).

• Getting registered into Social Work England and other regulatory bodies in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

• Tips on finding employment, CV and cover letter format.

• Places with high employment prospect OR opportunities.

• Places to live with considerable cost of living as a new immigrant.

• Other relevant information that would be helpful.

I look forward to receiving contributions from others.

As a student in UK between 2008 to 2011, I did a social care work at Perth and St. Andrews, both in Scotland. I worked 4 hours a day during classes and unlimited hours during summer and after graduation.

My employers then, NHS Scotland, was willing to assist me with sponsorship to settle in UK but the occupation then wasn't on the list of jobs under sponsorship in UK. The conservative government of David Cameron made things difficult then.

Luckily for me, I secured a job in Nigeria and returned back. Is there a visa category for social workers at the moment? I doubt as only nurses and other health care workers are allowed in under the new visa rule. Social and care work is not there.

Thank you for your contribution.

The new Health and Care Visa includes social workers as occupations on the shortage list.
The Health and Care Visa will apply to the following list of Standard Occupational
Classification codes:
• 2112 – Biological scientists and biochemists
• 2113 – Physical Scientists
• 2211 – Medical Practitioners
• 2212 – Psychologists
• 2213 – Pharmacists
• 2214 – Ophthalmic Opticians
• 2215 – Dental practitioners
• 2217 – Medical Radiographers
• 2218 – Podiatrists
• 2219 – Health Professionals not elsewhere classified
• 2221 – Physiotherapists
• 2222 – Occupational Therapists
• 2223 – Speech and Language Therapists
• 2229 – Therapy professionals not elsewhere classified
• 2231 – Nurses
• 2232 – Midwives
2442 – Social Workers
• 3213 – Paramedics

You could consider applying.

One notable hurdle seems to be assessment of non-UK qualification. This seems to be a tedious exercise that I have been researching about. Obviously, there is a huge difference in the way social work is taught in both countries. This may impact the assessment process. Do you have any suggestions about this?

Registering under Social Work England can be expensive (£495 scrutiny fee and £90 application fee), one could assess their credentials and register under other social regulatory bodies in the UK (my choice Northern Ireland Social Care Council, which charges £350 for assessment and registration fee) and then pay only £90 to register under SW England. This means saves you cost and stress.

Social workers are professionals who work with individuals, communities, families or groups going through psychological or social challenges to enable them have the strength and coping skills to deal with their personal problems.

The also connect people to resources in the community that could help people lead meaningful lives. These resources may be material in terms of financial benefits such as government doles and grants; or non-material benefits such as skill acquisition programmes to enable people gain employable skills, or mental health services for those who are differently abled mentally.

Imagine problems people go through daily, social workers are professionals who help people help themselves to deal with these problems better.

What's the job prospect for social workers in Scotland?

As a student, i did care and social work then. I don't know the current situation of things now as I am no more in the UK. I left UK in 2011 to Nigeria.

But as a student then, I was paid £6.5 per hour. I was the only black person in my place of work. A lot of vetting and police report were needed to be engaged as a care giver because care and social workers works with vulnerable segment of the population - the aged.

They really felt it when I told them that I was leaving. I could see the raw emotions in the faces of those old men. I gave them the best of care beyond their expectations, gisted with them, told them stories about Africa. Engaged them even in the UK local politics and they were marvelled.

Because of my dedication to duty, the Matron of the care home offered me an opportunity of a live- in caregiver. That's, to live within the care home with meals instead of coming from my home. I disengage with my landlord sharply. Put a student in my house and collected the unutilized six months rent I had earlier paid from the new occupant.

I took the offer without hesitation as it saved my rent, bills, utilities and transportation cost and my pay was increased to £8.5 per hour with free breakfast, lunch and dinner. I saved quite substantial amount before coming back to Nigeria. They didn't know that I had masters degree. grin

Lol. Nice.
Did you ever wish you taken up a profession in the social care sector? Why haven't you gotten back to the UK?

Also, which part of the UK would you recommend for employment and living, apart from England? I have been considering NI, is it a good choice?

I studied social work at the University of Calabar. It is practically the most underrated course in the faculty of social sciences in most universities in Nigeria but one of the most highly sought-after professions in EVERY developed nation of this world (no exaggeration).
It's one easy ticket to your dream country abroad and people don't even know this. Social work is to social sciences as medicine or nursing is to science; that kind of reputation recognised internationally.

To study social work in Nigeria, just have Mathematics, English, Government, Economics, Geography and any other subjects (schools have their entry level requirements, ensure to check the difference).
You could also study social work as an online or distance learning programme offered by institutions abroad.

You must have the passion to study social work to excel academically and practically. Do your research to understand what the profession is about before you decide if it is right for you.

Surprisingly, it is one of the easiest programmes to get admitted into. Score 180 in JAMB and do well in Post-UTME, you may likely get in. It is an area of practice most people don't know about.

Not at all. I am in the finance and business line. A chartered accountant by the way. I picked up the care job just to work as work in my area was not forth coming.

Doing care work is not my thing. However, it has now become a specialised area and even very competitive. Getting a UK employer to offer you a position when you are not currently living in UK may prove extremely difficult. No harm in trying. Ensure you register with the relevant bodies before applying.

I was already in UK as a student, didn't bother registering with the Scottish care council as I knew I wouldn't stay there long. Though the Matron of the care home where I worked implored me to register and write all their exams.

I'm afraid your certifications and years of experience may not get you a social work role most places in Europe. Usually, to practice social work abroad requires a BSc in social work, although, there are few exceptions to this. In Alberta, Canada, for example, the minimum of a Diploma is accepted to practise in the province. In Scotland, you may not need a social work qualification to start your career in social services. Typically, a person with your level of experience are highly sought after but you need the required qualification to get employed, getting up the ranks would not be difficult for you.

I'd recommend you look into https://www.sssc.uk.com/careers-and-education/qualifications/ to get more information about getting a job abroad.

I hope that helps.

Have you had any social work job experience so far? If yes, you stand a good chance. I'd advise you register through Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC), then register with Social Work England, it'd be cheaper.
SW England scrutiny and registration fees cost £585 but NISCC's credential assessment and registration fees cost £350. Afterwards, register with SW England with only £90.

If you have had your credential assessed in any of the regulatory bodies in the UK, you won't have to do that again, you will only pay for the registration fee.

There seems to be some mixup between a care worker and a social worker . From your write up your job and experience was as a Care worker and not a social worker

Social worker is what is on the shortage skill list and not a care worker . To be a social worker on the UK is heavily regulated and a care worker is not. These are very two different professional pathways

You are correct. But migrating as a social worker to UK from Nigeria may prove extremely difficult. It is not in a shortage occupation and getting a sponsor will be near impossible as there are lot of qualified residents.
