Dear Nairalander,

I just completed my PhD in Europe and now looking into relocating to the US to do a specialized training to be a medical physicist. Sadly, only US masters/phd degrees meet up the entry requirements. For internationally trained applicants with a PhD, they need to complete a post-PhD certificate program (8 - 12 months duration) before they can be accepted into the residency training. Would it be possible to obtain an F1 visa to attend this program? Is there anyone in possession of a PhD degree with experience of applying for an F1 visa?

I hope this helps someone. Goodluck to those still trying to get their visa approved.
Visa approved 13/11/20
VO: Pass me your I20
VO: xxxx University, right?
Me: Yes
VO: Biology PhD, right?
Me: Yes
VO: Why xxxx University?
Me: A key factor in my decision to pursue a PhD in this university is the overlap between my research interest and that of professors in the department like Prof. Bleep and Prof. xxxxx. In addition to that, the fact the the admission came with full funding made it an easy decision
VO: Are you married
Me: No
VO: Do you have a winter jacket?
Me: I’ll get one if you approve my visa
VO: I’ll be approving your visa, go and pay your reciprocity fee over there.

Greetings everyone,
Please I have this situation to present to you and would love a candid advice.

I am married, no kids yet but seeking travel with my wife to the U.S via STUDY or INVITATION from a friend living and working in the U.S.

He's going to invite me and wife to come over. Then when we arrive I can apply for some courses and stay back.

My question: Is it possible for me and wife to be invited and stay back in the US legally, without cutting corners?(remember we've only been invited).
Do you know of anyone that has travelled through this means?

I just want to be sure if this option canwork

Me:. Because I have been working in the pharmaceutical industry since my graduation and National Youth Service. I am having a good career in the industry. VO: (looking curious) Ok tell me, what do you do now in your current role.

Me: I work with xxxbn pharmaceutical company as an Asst Quality Control Manager. VO: (looking straight into my eyes while I looked into his his confidence, but not arrogant) yes please tell me

Me: like I said before I analyse medicines that many lives depends on. This program will improve my scientific and technical competence in all areas of drug analysis, advanced chemical instrumentation due to the increasing regulatory requirements in promoting the quality of medicines. When I conclude this program, I will be coming back to continue to train young scientists working with me in the lab and will fulfill the requirements to be promoted to senior managerial level in my organisation.

VO:. (types for some seconds) and asked are you married

Me:. No, but I am in a serious relationship and will be getting married on my return from this program.

VO: Okay, I will be approving your visa. Go to window 22 and pay reprocity fee ( Then the usual POE advise them gave me white paper with yellow tag)

Note: I wrote this transcript BC I know it might be of great use to working professionals who have been in the industry of any for some years before going for a graduate program. In all things prepare well and pray, God can do all things. No financial documents was

Intellectual pursuits in our Contraption is like none other - we sink deeper by the day

Below are examples of what some students (undergrad and PG) have to go through in Nigerian universities. Did you experience any of these?

COPIED Compiled by the one and only Eketi Edima Ette!!

On Project/Master's Thesis Defence in Nigerian Federal Universities - A thread:

"We had to pay hotel bills for the members of the panel. You could also offer sex, if your supervisor is the devil's apprentice. Transport money inclusive."
- Erdoo N.

"I decided I'd never have anything else to do with Nigerian universities, the day I saw people defending their masters dissertation presenting coolers of rice, garden eggs and crates of drinks to their supervisors. I legit thought someone was getting married."
- Bibian U.

"We we're told we'd pay 60k each, for both entertainment and logistics of external supervisor."
-Chiamaka O.

"We spent the night prior to my mother's defense at the University of Ilorin, cooking coolers of rice with assorted meat for the lecturers."
- Omekagu.

We fed the whole department.
Paid a prior fee of 2k.
Still gave supervisor gift. This same supervisor then came on one of my Facebook posts to say how I'm too opinionated to get married. I blocked him for my peace of mind. I don't have strength."
- Sylvia E.

"My husband was so frustrated by his Uniuyo supervisor for this, that he abandoned his MBA and finally got it from a UK university without any sort of bribery."
- Uche N.

"In ESUT, students have to buy brand new suits for their supervisors."
- Udeh O.

"Envelopes filled with money. Hotel bills. Payment to the school. External supervisor's fee. The mental stress.
Ah! The only reason I'm still doing it is because I've come too far to stop. After Master's, I'll never do anything school in this country again. Never!"
- Bello A.

"Some departments will even provide you with a menu and list of people you'll feed on the day of your thesis defense.
I nearly wept for my friend, when one non-teaching staff started dragging her because meat had finished."
- Esther A.

"Ordinary B.Sc project I defended, mh supervisor collected a bag of rice. On the defense day, we went to an eatery and bought food and drinks for all the supervisors in the hall."
- Harrison P.

"The money I spent on my supervisor was enough to buy a piece of land in GRA.

-A bottle of special nonalcoholic wine and MTN airtime worth 1.5k for "consultation" before he approved my topic.
-Two months DSTV premium subscription...

-N5000 for every chapter I took to him for vetting. Except Chapter 4 - he made me pay 20k for it because, "all my project students knows I do it better."

-The day of defence, we(a group of about 15 students) paid 2k each for food and transport fare."
-Odichi R.

"We paid 40k each for 'refreshment' and 'honorarium' during internal defence. We are also going to replicate that amount, if not more, during external the defence."
- Ịhụnanya A.

"For BSc project defense we contributed money to feed the supervisors."
-Oreva E.

"My project topic was originally on aquatic snails.

My supervisor said I should bring some snails to his house, not even the aquatic snails that I was supposed to be working on. I bought half a bag of land snails for him.

A week later, he changed my topic to Catfish and demanded that I buy some catfish and and bring them to his house for inspection. I had to do it. I wish he'd asked for rice and drinks, like my colleagues were asked. If have spent less money."
- Ruth D.

"The best thing I ever did for my life and mental health was to abandon my Master's program halfway. My blood pressure was always high. They killed my zeal to study and do research. Nigerian universities? God forbid!"
- Ene P.

"I abandoned my Master's program because my supervisor wanted to have sex with me. I told him I'm a married woman. He said and I quote, "That's even better! I like them married. If anything happens, we'll both keep our mouths shut." No one listened to my report.
- Annie U.

“And Postgraduate students do multiple defenses - proposal, internal and faculty defense, then the very almighty external defense. Multiple seminars too

And refreshment is served in ALL

Aswear, MSc in Nigeria was the most challenging thing I've done in my life so far”
Seriously? Hmm

You must understand that different categories of people are following this thread. Some are young graduate without much professional experience while others have worked in their field for years b4 going for graduate degree to take their careers to the next level. This transcript focused more on those in healthcare profession and how one may convince the VO based on how his or her job affect human lives. I am sure many of them here knows the transcript is helpful.

Finally, your personal opinion is recognised. Thank you.

I have a lot of messages in my inbox, with all sort of questions.
I have to say this is a time of rush and pressure for everyone.
I have been very busy, but I promise to reply every message and try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.
Please keep asking your questions here except it's personal and you cannot share publicly.
Two of the guys who recently got their visas have promised to always come here to help with answers to questions.

On Emergency Appointment
To those messaging me about what to do if their emergency appointment is denied. Please note, there's not much than to wait for new date to pop up for the location you requested an emergency appointment from (then reshedule for that location or to a second location). Or cancel your current unsuitable appointment, lose the visa fee and pay a new visa fee, then request emergency from that location or another location.

But I think as more people are interviewed, earlier dates may show up. Should you wait? Should you cancel and pay another visa fee? Only the applicant can answer this question.
If this is your question, please relief me of the stress by taking what's explained above as the answer you'd get from me. There are other people that can also answer questions here, even better than me. They are always ready to help.
_____

To those who were refused today or other times, please note that the F-1 visa is like a goal. Sometimes, we fail to achieve it once, but will you stop? NO! A goal is something you pursue until attained, adjusting in your pursuit, looking for better options, taking instructions, and so on. You adjust, push again, prepare better, or wait and get a strong and competitive admission with funding. You don't give up on your goal, or it would mean you never really wanted to achieve it in the first place.

Disappointment is a part of the human experience. Some of us had to experience it to become wise, stronger, learn, change our view and embrace the reality that life is not easy, and so on. But a single setback, even multiple setback, doesn't mean it is the end of our dream. Fall 6 times? Get up the 7th! So get up! Don't give up if you mean it.

All the best!
Hi @fairheart, I am a new user on here. My visa application was refused last week in Lagos. I have scheduled another for Abuja and the earliest date I got is in March 2021. I later noticed that the instruction for expediated appointment says you can't request for one if you have been rejected in the past 6 months. My program starts in January 2021 and I was hoping I would be able to use the expedited appointment. What do you advise I do in the circumstance? Do you think they may still grant me an expedited appointment regardless? I hope to hear from you.

Thank you

Please when you get the emergency interview let us know. I have also picked March but no response on the emergency interview even though I told them not only about my school but how I was rejected with no proper questions asked about my school. I will still email my school to defer, just to be on the safe side still. I can only hope that I get a fair chance to tell and sell my self and my purpose of schooling next time because even on my DS160 when asked why I was refused, I told them how my interview went with just 4questions.
