MINISTER of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has decried continuous fall in the standard of education in the country. Adamu, who spoke in Yola, the Adamawa State capital during official commissioning of completed projects in the college, lamented a situation in which graduates can neither read nor write in a tolerable manner.

He said the situation was a cause for concern, adding that students and teachers need to sit up and face their tasks squarely if the situation is to be reversed.

“Some graduates of tertiary institutions across the country cannot read or write applications,” said the minister who was represented by the Director of Tertiary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Hajia Rakiya Gambo Iliyasu.

The minister elaborated that students and even graduates had been found to be unable to write one full sentence without multiple corrections needing to be made.

The minister urged all stakeholders in the education sector to sit up to ensure that the decline in the value of education is bridged within the shortest time possible.

Six completed projects which included a computer ICT Centre, sports centre, a centre for early childhood education, an undergraduate studies complex, among others, were commissioned during the ceremony at the FCE main campus in Yola.

All the six complexes were built by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), a fact acknowledged by the Provost of the college, Prof Abdul-Mumin Sa’ad, who earlier in his welcome address said: “Today, the Federal College of Education, courtesy of TETFund, is proud to have achieved major breakthrough in structures."

Truth

I think the problems lie more with the government, so they have the major part of the solution to offer, not the teachers and students.

The known fact is that, apart from the unity schools in Nigeria, government hardly takes care or show concern to the other public primary and secondary schools.
In the past, there are always inspectors from the LIE(Local Inspectors of Education) and School Boards who always make emergency and unnoticed visitation to primary and secondary schools to spy on the teachers and the Principals, check the lesson notes and the teaching skills, where are they now?
Are they still doing these?

Reading and writing in a tolerable manner are learnt during the course of Basic education (6-3). If a student can’t get it right during the basic education course, he may not likely get it right again.
How then is it justified moving these students to University through quota system in our tertiary education admission, neglecting the place of the mean cut off marks?

Government also has to make sure there is a solid body or council with the task of registering qualified teachers and annual upgrade of teachers that will be recruited into the private and public schools. Not any Tom, Dick and Harry can teach and impact knowledge.

I wondered just HOW some of my coursemates gained admission into the school when I was an undergrad.
They can't even string simple, error-free sentences together!

They are all around us. Garbage in, garbage out!
Was it not one of them that posted "I am a CORPSE member" on Facebook some years ago? Then, they defend/console themselves with "English is not our mother tongue" and "Na who pass sabi book!"

Y'all quoting me to say it could be Auto-correct, I thought it might be, too. So, I checked out his previous posts. Dude dropped more bombs than North Korea!

And no, he ain't a Northerner.

In as much as I’d like to disagree, a large percentage of Nigerian graduates can’t read nor speak good English.
It’s a given English isn’t our language, but we were coerced to speak it hence we need it to communicate since we bare the tag “Graduates “
During my NYSC days in Ogun, you’d be surprised that a so called graduate cannot spell properly let alone speak correct English.

Most undergraduates are in school having little or no idea of what they’re doing.
It takes more than a degree to be called a graduate
That said, you can’t really blame them, the system is messed up, imagine our university in the supposed giant of Africa is on strike and students have little or no idea when it would be called off.. we need a total rebirth in Nigeria, because from the look of things, we are far from redemption

See this one.

During NYSC, the kind of mediocrity that Igbo students from South East display is beyond description.

Their men can only smoke like chimneys and their women can only copulate like donkeys. They sleep with everything for anything.

ADAMUdaCOWBOY:

My brother I see them tire! Speaking pidgin all over the place, you'd think they are just being casual, the guys no sabi speak English. In their universities, the guys that pass are the ones that pay the lecturers well and the girls that graduate will have to "copulate like donkeys" with the lecturers. grin grin

100%

Even the president of the country can't
You people can't stop contradicting yourselves. You accuse someone of reading scripts on live TV but still say he can't read or write.

Translate passage to Yoruba.

This one is following his Oga's footstep.

Even if we can't read and write, should it be coming from our Education minister?
