"pirates ouyos" stands for "ijaw pirates", not oyo pirates.

Someone said that but the Onikoyi Royal family of Ikoyi is of Ethnic Oyo Origin and they rule the East of Lagos Island

Oyo= Ouyo

The matter has been settled

Ijebu call it Eko

Benin called it Kuramo after the first Portuguese name

The Ijebu have sized all the land except a piece at the tip of the Island (Isale Eko) where Benin still has influence

The actual translation:

"Captain Horseley called it Eco, and that is how the yebous refer to it; but it is not their land: it belongs to Benin, whom have named it Korame, you can recognise the Curamo from older Portuguese reports, just like Eko represents the Ichoo from Holland Hydrographs. Long ago Korame was linked to its metropolis by a very narrow piece of land contained between the great Laguna and the sea; but it has been a while since the Yebous have seazed that very narrow piece of land of which the eastern extremity was invaded by ouyo pirates; and Karamé remained isolated at the extremity of the great Laguna, while it continues to receive from Benin it's governor or political chief."

The jebou seazed only a very narrow piece of land linking lagos to its metropolis (the rest of Benin empire)

Please stop saying nonesense, in this paper it is very well explained that "ouyos" stands for "Jos" which we call ijo today.
Also it's weird you didn't find it strange that oyo people would be pirates, oyo are landdlocked people who had no presence near the sea. ijo are still pirates today.

The fact is you don't understand the text because you don't speak french and you also lack common sense.

No doubt about that. No Oba of Lagos ascends throne without the blessing of Oba of Benin.

Are you for real or something else needs to be put in place?

What an arrant nonsense from your gut

Benin held only the tip of the Island because Ijebu seized the rest including the Metropolis ( Even till today)

What is "language of land" and "tongue of land" ? You failed to notice that your google translation translated the same expression in 2 diffrent manners, and both translations are litteral translations with no meaning in english.

For your info "langue de terre" means "narrow piece of land", not "language of land" nor "tongue of land".

Broda tire o, do you actually know that they were speaking Yoruba (Ile ife dialect) inside the palace of the Oba of Benin before they stopped around the 19th century. The two major empire in the Southern Nigeria is the Benin empire and the Oyo empire both came through Oranmiyan a Prince from Ile Ife. The only thing about the Benin empire is that it is a mixture of Yoruba from Ile Ife and the Aborigines of Idu/Igodomigodo. Also there was no name like Yoruba around the 14-15 century until Ajayi Crowther used it to Unify all of us with same Language,
culture, traditions, norms and value system and from the same source Ile Ife, so during Benin did not want to be part of us, even when they were in Western Region, it was Oba Akenzua that was the major force that pushed for the creation of Mid West region.

Ok, I have had my fun with this scam artist named christistruth00. I am the person who actually found the historical document in question and posted it to nairalanda.
Here is the actual translation:

"Captain Horseley called it Eco, and that is how the yebous refer to it; but it is not their land: it belongs to Benin, whom have named it Korame, you can recognise the Curamo from older Portuguese reports, just like Eko represents the Ichoo from Holland Hydrographs. The document comes from a book: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k62093119/f11.image.r=Yebou

@ Areafada, Gregyboy, Samuk, Davidnazee.

Very obviously the metropolis being talked about is Benin !
Macof why are you such a liar ?
For your info, "langue de terre" means : "very narrow piece of land". You don't speak French and your Google translation won't translate that, because it is an expression.
While discussing history with you guys yoruba, it always comes down to this: you must lie ! But why ? It is history, it has already happened, why try to create your alternate reality ?

For readers who only want the truth, the text is here for you, don't be lazy, translate it.

Also, when you see expressions like "langue de terre" you have to first look at its meaning in a French dictionary ( just type the expression on Google, it should give you the meaning in french), then you translate the meaning (which would be words in french) into English.
Don't believe me, just do the work and don't be lazy.

Also, as can be seen in the third caption, "ouyo" doesn't mean "oyo". Ouyo refers to a bunch of pirates whom were also called Jos. The ouyo pirates are most likely ijo people ! Gbam !

Benin didn't own, they controlled some parts of Lagos Island by conquest and it didn't tantamount to ownership of Lagos.

The bolded simply means you are speculating.

Isale Eko is the Area between Idumota Market to Obalende. Oba of Lagos influence doesn't reach beyond there and the Land the Markets are on belongs to the Aromire Awori Yoruba family.

That is the Isolated tip of the Island that the document called Korame which Ijebu called Eko

The rest the Ijebu took over and you will still find the Ijebu there today

Oranmiyan did not really style himself as Oba because he was a warrior, Nevertheless he stayed in Benin for a very short period, Eweka dynasty formally stated the Obaship and of course his father was Oranmiyan

oranmiyan is like fatherchristmass, he was made up in a story.
ife is a village and the story around ife was made up, the oni is just a priest of a village, the only link between ife and Benin empire would exist is ife was a village under Benin empire.

What was Igbodomigodo as at the time Oranmiyam came? City? Empire? Village?

You mean Oranmiyam never existed?

You are the Liar trying to Claim more than Isale Eko (Markets not Land)

Lagos Metropolis was what Ijebu took over they are still there!

Lekki and Eastern Lagos is Ijebuland!

In the Ota war of 1842 the Egba took all the Land from Abeokuta to Ebutte Meta

It was the British that arranged a Peace agreement that gave all the Land South of Sango-Ota ( Except Ebutte Meta) back to the Awori

Well anybody would be specualting, only the honnest would say "probably". Indeed the text doesn't say "ijaw" because the name ijaw didn't exist back then ! Instead the text says "Jos" and gives a description which fits the ijaws. So the people who best fit the description are the ijaws, and that is no speculation rather than the illiterate self-serving comment of your fellow yoruba who was quich to say "oyo".

Oranmiyan did not administer as Oba in Benin, even when he founded the Oyo empire and he became the first Oba ( first Allafin of Oyo) he still left and went back to Ile Ife his final resting place.
