Magnoliaa: Magnoliaa:You are just all over the place bringing in equality ![]() What has equality got to do with Kamala Harris chosen as the running mate of Biden? Last I remembered, Pakistan elected a female Prime Minister in 1988. They don't strike me as 'epitome of equality'. If you don't understand the context of the thread, read the OP calmly, and comment again (if interested). This gender equality/ inequality is honestly getting stale and creates mental block during discussions. Where are my thread on male celebrities? Did I create a thread on 'over-hyped' female celebrities? |

Kayyy:In order to be chosen by him, she had to be available first and to be available and even considered for the position of the VP you have to come a long way. This is what we are celebrating considering the fact that minorities have to pass bigger hurdles to get to the goal. |

mariahAngel:Nope. I would not think 'thank God I am a Nigerian', ''Bolaji' has made a way for us' bla bla. My point is with the position: Vice President which is a running mate of the president. If she was elected the President, that another discussion. |

bukatyne:lol...I never said it was enough. I m emphasizing on the importance of choice of VP If religion isn't a key, you won't see the politicians at church camps and other large gatherings when election is around the corner |

femi4:Is there a specific slot for the VP on the US voter's ballot? If Biden lost, could Kamala be the VP? |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by Magnoliaa(f): 12:57pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
bukatyne:Yes, because it is a factor whether you (choose to) see it or not. What has equality got to do with Kamala Harris chosen as the running mate of Biden? You do not see how a woman and a person of color being the VP of the United States relate to equality? I will tell you one of such consequence - a talking point. Yes. It is another great feat, an addition to what women have been doing, and if personally do not value being able to talk about, that's on you. You can choose learn about the other consequences of such a feat. Last I remembered, Pakistan elected a female Prime Minister in 1988. They don't strike me as 'epitome of equality'.Baby steps and accumulated wins? And in a country fraught with religious tensions and wars, you're seriously drawing a comparison with? Even at that, so? Being woman prime minister is a decision centered on equality. It is a single case, but it matters. If you don't understand the context of the thread, read the OP calmly, and comment again (if interested).I read the OP and understood its context perfectly. And I responded based on the that. Harris is a woman, and that's a reason her being celebrated. Didn't you want answers and contributions? Or you seek an echo chamber? This gender equality/ inequality is honestly getting stale and creates mental block during discussions. But you can bank on the "rife" it creates to share your opinions and open threads, isn't it? You want to tell people not to celebrate HER unnecessarily or not? Where are my thread on male celebrities? Did I create a thread on 'over-hyped' female celebrities?Oh. Sorry. Wrong use of words there. I'll be specific. Politicians. Over-hyped politicians. How many of them have you questioned the cult-like support they get? |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by bukatyne(op): 12:59pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
Hathor5:@First paragraph: her achievements is great, go to Disclaimer 1. This thread is not to dispute her qualifications to be VP @Rest of the post: does not answer the question in the OP. |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by Magnoliaa(f): 1:04pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
bukatyne:Everything in her comment answered the question: why the 'idolization?'. Being a woman also mean that there are likely going to be policies she'll put in place that are privy to women's needs and discrimination - from a woman's point of view - and other minorities. |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by femi4: 1:04pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
bukatyne:It's a joint ticket. Only party name is on the ballot paper |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by bukatyne(op): 1:08pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
Magnoliaa:A woman winning an elective position is not 'equality'. It is people deciding she is fit for the job or she has the resources to rig the election in her favour. @bold: The cure I needed to know you are projecting on the OP. How many VPs are over-hyped? Who do I compare Kamala's case with? Do you understand the difference between Biden and Kamala in this case? One was elected; one was a running mate. We are over-hyping the running mate who would not be IF the president did not win. EOD. |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by Nobody: 1:15pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
Kamala Harris, not minding my reservations about her, deserves to be congratulated, even celebrated. The first female American VP is no small feat. She try. |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by Hathor5(f): 1:20pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
bukatyne:It does. She is THE FIRST FEMALE VICE PRESIDENT in America and OF COLOR too. That's new. That's special. She is THE FIRST to have achieved it. That's a historical milestone. That's why people have strong reactions to her particularly. You can't separate her personal traits and her achievements. It's a combination of both that makes it so special. Mike Pence was one of many white men to hold the position of a VP. She is the first of her kind to hold the position. They are both qualified but their backgrounds differ. Obama wasn't only celebrated for his achievements. He was also celebrated because he did something nobody before him did. Mariah said it. If she was a Nigerian, many Nigerians would celebrate her too. They would be proud of her achievements as Nigerians. If she was Yoruba, you would feel some sense of pride too whether you confess it or not. It's human to identify with a group of people and take pride in the achievements of their members. |

| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by bukatyne(op): 1:32pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
Hathor5:So the hype is the fact she is female? If she was Yoruba, I would naturally feel sense of pride. A big congratulations to her. However, I would not think the future is Yoruba and other crazy stuff going around. |

| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by Hathor5(f): 1:58pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
bukatyne: Hathor5:The hype is that she is THE FIRST FEMALE OF COLOR to become the VICE PRESIDENT OF THE US. Combination of achievements with personal traits which often are a hurdle to becoming what she has. see red |

Hathor5:Ok, so if she was Jamal or Kamal with same characteristics and qualifications, you wouldn't see the much need to hype it? |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by Magnoliaa(f): 2:09pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
bukatyne:She's a female DOING and BEING and PROVING. Goddd. Were Yorubas killed and oppressed and dehumanized and are subjugated in exactly the same way women are/were? Your personal convictions do not hold for all. And that is fine. Celebrate how ever you want. If you didn't create this thread for like-minders to echo your thoughts and you directed it to the people who are celebrating her, then consider what they are saying. Everybody knows a particular crowd that are celebrating her, but you're trying to rip this off a women's right stand. "I'm talking to you people oh, but don't come close. I haven't mentioned you." If another woman should do anything notable like this, in another field, she'll still be celebrated come tomorrow, because (and you don't have to see it), there are biases about women and what they can do or not do. The more women change these narratives, the better. A woman winning an elective position is not 'equality'. It is people deciding she is fit for the job or she has the resources to rig the election in her favour. You almost got it here. A woman winning an elective position because it was decided that she FITS is the essence of equality. It's showing that women can LEAD and is helping dispel myths about how women are only good as cooks and whatever. Despite or in spite or whatever of her being a woman, she ran, and she's in that position. Rigging? That's on the electoral system. The point is a woman is doing it (and I'm aware that not everything a woman does is empowerment, but when it comes to such issues, we'll hash it, within its context). @bold:Hathor has explained why Kamala is different. Men lead and are selected all the time, no one bats a lid. There's nothing different happening. Me asking you to point out male politicians you've criticized before because of hype, is because you're asking why the undue hype of Kamala. Or you mean you're asking why the undue hype of Kamala as a VP? Or as a woman? They are inseparable. Because in answering why the "undue hype" as a simple running mate, I'll respond with a gender-specific reason. And this reason(being woman) doesn't mean she doesn't have the brains for being a VP. We're hyping because she's a woman, yes. But Biden would not be making decisions alone na? They both won. You can't rule out Kamala's influence. She happen to be a woman, and we're celebrating that. If Biden didn't win, no problem... She'll prolly still be another woman at the echelons of politics running for presidency/VP like Hillary, making two of them. The trend is getting set until it becomes normal for more women to run along men for such positions. Are you using the "VP position" as a loophole? Male politicians get hyped. Men are hyped, in every way, and I'm saying I've not seen you question that 'hypnotic, cult like pull' men in powers hold over the masses like you're doing to Kamala. Trump is always inciting vawulence; IPOB sees him as a Messiah, so, Harris as well can be hyped to Pluto and back by online-warring independulant weemyn. Whether as a VP or as a woman. Dazzol I'm saying. |

Magnoliaa:If in 2021 Kamala becoming the VP is still helping you dispel the myth that women are only good for cooking, you are several years late to the party. We have the Margaret Thatchers, female winners of Nobel Laurettes, the Queen Victorias, Croatian sexy presido, Queen Aminas, Queen Cleopatras, Angela Markels, Dora Akunyili's etc etc etc. Perhaps if you stop seeing women from the lenses of victimhood, you would understand the OP better. Is there any male VP or deputy Governor hyped the way Kamala is hyped today? @bold; after 10 posts, you are just landing. If she was the President elect and Biden was the VP, then this hype is on point! |

Chii59:What is the difference between a female immigrant VP in the US and a male Igbo VP in Nigeria? Ok, bring a similar example. Obama that would have been a great fit was 'unfortunately' the President. |
| Re: Kamala Harris: Why The Idolization? by cococandy(f): 2:27pm On Jan 22, 2021 |
You don’t seriously think that the two factors can be separated do you? Her being female and the “idolization”. Remember the reason why it’s happening is because a sexist country like America is getting better at fielding female representatives. Unless you mean you don’t want a gender war on the thread then that makes sense. But the topic itself is based on gender. bukatyne: |
