I'm not farming mushrooms currently but based on what I know and have taught some people, it is profitable.

Mushroom cultivation is broad. Know what people want and dwell on it. Like oyester mushroom which is easy to cultivate and widely acceptable by mushroom lovers.

Carve a niche for yourself in areas like...malls(that won't place restrictions on your products due to nafdac approval issues) but if you have nafdac, that's fine.

I think the fresh one moves fast here than the dried. This is a pointer to know which to produce more. Although the dried has more market value per kg compared to the fresh per kg.

You can sell to pizza producing outlets.

You can sell dried to either as whole or powdery forms in hospitals.

You can sell to food vendors that prepares more of African dishes.

Ensure your product is hygienically produced and work well on your packaging-very key.

Market your product by creating awareness about the benefits..that's the edge you have to make profit.

A shocker, there is a mall here which gets supplies of fresh and dried mushroom...one of their staff just informed me last week that the supply has ceased...and he confessed to me how people rush the fresh one.. that's a good opportunity to sell and I believe there are other malls like that around.

I hope this is helpful?

You have not yet started but already telling them it is profitable. OMG! And funny, they are all posting WhatsApp numbers for an inexperienced person to teach them. Lol. You all can learn the rope together. Nothing bad.

Anyway, do not go into it if you do not have the market. The market is very slim. You can sell dried mushrooms to customers who prepare food for a group of people like hostels. But it's more of contracts in nature. Only those with "legs" can do it. Do you have such? You are wasting your time posting sales of mushroom here. You that want to sell dried mushroom, how many friends or relatives of yours can buy 1kg at the price you want to sell it? You know the answer.

To sell fresh, just know you need a cooling means to move it from your farm to selling point. It must be contract based too. This is even tougher. Your packaging must be superb. Spar and Shoprite pick from specific farms in Nigeria. You cannot even enter shop rite again cos the guy in charge is so perfect with the Nigerian system. And the guy handling Spar has understood the Nigerian market too. Can you do this?

Now, ask yourself the question. If it is so profitable, why are those selling you seeds not making it huge? Do they also sell fresh and dried mushrooms with the millions and billions they put on paper for you? One of them in this forum used to work in one govt firm in Oshodi Lagos with mush room specialty (nor sure if he is still there). The govt firm has not secured enough contracts to supply fresh and dried mushrooms, not to talk of the staff who comes here to advertise. And he is encouraging you to start what he knows he cannot do himself. Lol. His thread is like up to 100 pages in this forum. I laugh when I see his updates on...making millions producing mushroom.

I can tell you my colleagues who are in the business who have closed it. No doubt if you have the market, it's so profitable. But the work you put in it coupled with how you start running after workers is so crazy. The good thing is workers have nothing much to steal cos they cannot even sell it. So, aggrieved workers always destroy properties before leaving. This issue is one reason the business always has issues. And when you cannot meet your regular target of supplies due to these challenges, your offtaker will drop you.

Remember, Marketing 101 turns a farmer to an entrepreneur.

My post is not to discourage you, but to let you know ahead the challenge you are going to face. If you eventually set up a WhatsApp group due to this, I hope sales of seeds is not your initial plan. Use the group to address Marketing 101 and let sales of seeds come later. If you put it first, be rest assured you are going down sooner than expected.

Goodluck!

I tried it before after some training. It's profitable but not as easy and straightforward as it sounds. Those who do very well mostly have large establishments. I know of one that is in Ijebu and supplies some of the big supermarkets. Ensuring freshness from farm to market is key. Mushrooms gets spoilt easily. There's the option of drying but dried mushrooms are cheaper and not the preferred choice of mall shoppers.

A lecturer in Yabatech is a researcher on mushrooms and can give you more insight into the different types of mushrooms, their uses and product viability. Apart from the familiar mushrooms there's one that is used to deal with fibroids by Yorubas called Olu Iju (in Yoruba language). There are various options depending on your focus.

Try to learn a lot more. Visit mushroom farms and make more enquiries about marketing before you venture into it.

I wish you the very best.

We don't just train people, we mentor you till you can stand alone. We also support you financially among other benefits.

For our mushroom farmers, where to sell your mushroom isn't a problem. Just call us and we help you get buyers for your mushroom in both local and foreign market.

I think you don't want me teach you the A to Z with figures and facts. Yes, the cost of production is low if you have means of transporting huge substrates. But you start feeling the heat when you need to harvest and supply within few hours; else, it goes bad. And you need to put it in a cooling van or moveable coolers. How many people you are training can afford it? Again, if you dry, do you know what that means?

Bro/Sis, you can never have huge market for this thing and have time to teach anyone. Not possible. All these foreign and local whatever you are writing are doubtful. Come out straight to these people and let them know the risks. Of course, that Mr A fails does not mean Mr B is going to fail. Dont get me wrong, it is profitable all over the world, even in Europe and in the US. But in a nation where electricity is a big mess, it is not advisable for someone who has low capital. Teach this first, and let them patronize you knowing this truth. For your information, I used to have a mushroom business I ran for many years.

God bless you. I love honest people, and you will reap the benefits of honesty. You said it neatly: the business is for well established investors - "bigger boys and girls". To maintain freshness from farm to market is the KEY - cooling van or coolers inside a can/truck. Again, accurate production to schedule harvest and meet up with offtakers requests is another factor.

There are quite a few Nigerian researchers into it. FIIRO in Oshodi has got a whole department dedicated for it and they run training.
https://www.fiiro.org/old_website/index.php/products/144-edible-mushroom-cultivation
They can download A to Z of it for you like wetin. But the business part, they are zero. They cannot even market their own products efficiently like a research institute. Lol. But I know many of them leverage on the kind of place they work to get personal contracts here and there. Yeah! I know about Yabatech too. But here is the thing: our economy is bad and it doesnt make it easy. Lecturers will only show one how to grow, but like you also agree with me, the most important aspect is marketing. Marketing first..

There is a professor I met some years ago who was one of the team members that suggested using a specie of mushroom to clean up oil polluted areas in Delta region some years back. Yeah! Many big oil firms do clean up with mushroom, and they employ researchers. I know one masters student some years ago under one professor who jammed his luck. The contract came, and he moved with the professor to the site (In Europe). The boy returned extremely rich in naira..lol.

------ A research paper --------
Oil Spills Remediation using Native Mushroom-A Viable Option
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/270023502_Oil_Spills_Remediation_using_Native_Mushroom-A_Viable_Option

Scientists advance cleaning up crude oil of spills with bacteria, mushrooms
https://m.guardian.ng/features/scientists-advance-cleaning-up-crude-oil-of-spills-with-bacteria-mushrooms/amp/

Scientists and lecturers tend to go into these areas above more than the edible kind we sell and eat. There are so many things mushrooms are used for. I am quite sure some researchers in FIIRO are making cool FOREX silently. Even I have rounded up most of my commercial farming ventures and gearing up for more researches. Kinda more interesting to me and more lucrative in this present Nigeria.

Thanks so much for being truthful.

We are in a digital world sir, all you need to do to know about lifeplus is to go on Google and type lifeplus foundation International or visit any of our office in your state.

The fact that some people failed at something doesn't mean there are people who can't do it successfully. The future belong to those who sees possibilities in opportunities before it becomes obvious.

By the grace of God, lifeplus foundation international is in over 30 states in Nigeria. A visit to any of our office will change your mindset about Nigeria. At lifeplus foundation international, we believe Nigeria will be great again through Agriculture. We believe we can do it together, me and you.

Also, we are in Ghana, Benin republic, Cameroon and south Africa already after just three years of our operation.

On Mushroom Farming:
Your mushroom don't have to go bad even if you produce in metric tonnes. You can add value to it by sun drying or oven drying it or turning it into powder.

At lifeplus foundation international, I insist there is both local and International market demand for both fresh and dry mushrooms.

We ensure our members produce, process and package their mushrooms to meet International standards.

Thanks

Do I sound like someone in the stone age for you to bring up digital age? So, its stone age information that I dropped above. Bauh? Lol

FYI, your ogas in your Life whatever foundation have approached me somehow. Well, is it not the man that was flooding the whole place with "bring money, invest, and we turn it to gold"? And then promises investors will climb up whatever pyramid? Make una dey deceive yourselves oooo. Nothing more to say. I have not accused him of fraud, but I am smart enough to know a good working business prospect. Come in the next 5 years, and when you and the foundation are still standing, we can talk. For now, please, hold your peace..

Read again what I wrote and the lady above and what we said about drying it. Oga, you just entered this thing. In fact you do not know it personally. You are a mere marketer or one of the employees there. So, please, do me a favor, just "free" this topic. Market is abroad but your foundation is yet to fully start operating. Interesting! If I dont know this foundation it's how you just will confuse them.

Please, be careful with foundations and NGOs..Many of them are frauds. That's how they open and pack most of the money raised. Instead of the man to use just this mushroom profit after setting up by himself to raise money, he is busy setting up pyramid. He doesnt need other areas he is promoting. Only him wants to start with snail, pepper, mushrooms, bla bla bla. Even as rich as Dangote is, he picks one at a time and does it well. He doesnt set up foundations to raise money. He goes to banks to raise money, not from desperate Nogerians through pyramid deceptions. That is a red flag. No matter what he says, I can never deal with him. NEVER! And these desperate Nigerians are buying into it. Desperation is really bad. But when they see the one teaching them and showing them the way, they become wild. Anyone who wants short cut journey will be short cut life along the way. He wants to export all the stuff abroad at once. Lol. Why don't Nigerians think?

On the positive side, you guys arent supposed to run this thread like this. I am smart enough to know that either the OP is genuinely looking for info about mushroom, or he is a marketer with you guys. Nothing bad in the tactic. Nice one! But you know you are not the only one in the foundation who is in this this thread. Do not let me start proving it cos I know. You only brought the flyer at the right time. Lol. Nice strategy. Bro, release vital info freely here, and grab people. Even while doing good, you will see your competitors start attacking you soon. Lol. Just make sure the market you are beating your chest here is real. Otherwise, do not stand for what you do not know about. Bro, the best marketing strategy in forums is to teach. It works like magic. Those people who do not release info do not last. And when you start teaching people will relate with you. They will test you. The way you answer them tell how well you will last. If I go 100 times, and I put a post here, they know. Bro, I do not hide myself. And if you know how many people beg me daily to not leave them? I think only Lucifer can resist these people with their pleas. Yet, there are many oppositions. Funny, even the oppositions learn. Is that not a mystery? I see them using the same drip I put a whole post to teach them. I changed the culture of bringing bad drips with my pen (posts). I can see the standard of drips around has really improved. More rolls of thicker ones are imported cos my readers tell them what they want now. Cos I gave them freely what they need. Even the bad ones are eager to read. This is the power of being a teacher. Even the ones competing try my approaches. The ones they dont gets they want to use stubbornness to get so it doesnt lool like consultants too dont know. Lol. But that's stupid na. They said carrying buckets can do veggie. Now, are they not changing? I do not need to go to your farm to know if you are on the right path or wrong. They deceived with farms they dont won't or big projects. They start displaying pictures...lol. And you just see them go silent or give useless excuse. Most know me, never will I post pictures anyhow. It doesnt matter to me if they are making money, or if they have more followers. My aim must be achieved and some have been. If I need to insult anyone and go on a long battle for the person to have his brain reformatted and not mislead people, I will do it again and again. Whether you appreciate me or not, I will put in my quota to develop Nigeria. I fight you and your use platform simultaneously. As long as Nigerians are on your platform, I am a stakeholder too. I will put in you Ethics and good business manners. And if it takes me 10 years to get at you, I swear, I will go on. May be silent, but I will hit back. And I am aware what they can do. I'm always ready. That's me..so, bro.. do the right thing. Teach and convince them that truly there is market abroad. Do not just say it. Too many frauds. It bleeds me inside to see JJC lose money. So, kindly change. Do not be like those bad elements who see only consultancy as the only way they can eat. And they always do bad jobs. But when another is teaching, they are angry. Teach! Teach!! Teach!!! If you are sure of the market you have abroad, teach here and they will run to you. Then after, buy from them. Otherwise, your ogas are just using you. When they hit it, they will run away.

Anyway goodluck in your adventure (not yet a business for you with the so called foundation).

who's into mushroom business, i want to hear from those into it.

Nigerians spend over 65% of their income on food. Dear mushroom associate, you might be leaving money on the table when you don’t position yourself optimally in the food sector.
Here are a few tips to position your mushroom business in the food sector:

1. Cooking videos
More often than not, people don’t know how to use mushroom. Create cooking videos that explains how to work with mushroom. Recall, if they buy it and don’t enjoy it; they wouldn’t come back.

2. Value addition
Convert mushroom to other products that is more familiar to your client. Mushroom tea, mushroom spice, mushroom snacks, already-made mushroom soup bowl, etc. Recall; it is easier for consumer to relate and buy a familiar product than a emerging product.

3. Target Audience
Your primary target audience are not farmers’ groups only. Share your product on food groups, fitness groups, vegetarian groups, health groups. Push your product to groups that have older persons, caterers, churches, food malls, hotels. Collaborate with people that sell other healthy food items. Attend food exhibitions, cook and sell. Keep pushing!

4. Benefit
Share the nutritional benefit of mushrooms; break it down to simpler words.
Instead of mushroom contains calcium, say, it is good for your bones.
Instead of it contains anti-oxidant, say, it boost your immunity.
Instead of it contains ergotheine, say, it has zero cholesterol; it is good for your heart.

5. Cooking guide
Create a cooking guide (it can be in a one-page black and white paper), add it whenever your customer orders your product, drop it at outlet that sells your product, share it. Change the recipes every month, use catchy headlines:
-Why you should make Mushroom ogbonno soup for your husband this weekend
-The secret to grandma's egusi soup
-Harvard standard mushroom egg sauce
-Your heart will thank you when you try this mushroom soup recipe
-Serve this mushroom suya in your next party
