Oga with all due respect, i stay in Canada i know what happens here in Canada, how can you bring up ur kids in the African way in a place were your kids are trained to call the police as early as 5years. etrange: |

Someone talked about Nigeria and respect. In reality, Africans train kids to respect their elders or people higher than them. However, they don't train kids to respect human beings irrespective of age , status or Gender. Respect in Africa is just one way. An African rich man will never respect the poor. African bosses will never respect their subordinates, Africans are not trained to respect institutions, this is why police has become errand boys to powerful people, African dont respect people with disability etc. It is because of our lack of respect for human beings, that is why our general society is bleeped up. Respecting elders is good but it doesn't take the general society anywhere. What will make a difference is respect for human beings. 6 Likes |

etrange: You are still making the same Mistake. You say Nigerians are known for Scamming as a general statement and then it makes me wonder why same Nigerians are some of the world leaders in Medicine, Science, sports etc. Can you just stop this and start giving yourself the right Orientation by telling yourself and your kids (if you have any) that you are the best in the world. Even you a Nigeria from your own comments thus far shows you are even racist to your own people because you got brainwashed by your Western slave masters. |

Godbpraised: Thank you. Calling the cops on your parents for simply being firm on their own kid. My kid, my rules but no the system has even taken that right away from you |

Godbpraised: There's nothing wrong with a kid knowing how to reach for help. That knowledge can come handy at any time. But if you'd be honest with yourself, you'd acknowledge the fact that African kids hardly call police on thier parents. That's becayse whether your child will call the police on you or not is not a function of the fact that they have the training but a function of how you raise your child. |

Tetehjewels: Oga, Nigerians are known for scamming. It may not be our reality, it may be a misconception but that's the general mindset the vast majority of people out there have. I did not start and I do not necessarily agree with. Blame it on those spoiling your name. |

etrange: That is the general mentality of your slave masters which you bought into because they spoon-fed you with it. Same way they would come here and make documentaries about our jungles only and every other ugly place and spoon-feed their people that Africa is a jungle and we live like monkeys. All just to paint Africa in a bad light You clearly are blind to the politics at play in the world. They brainwash you into thinking you are the scum of the earth and that you live in a shithole and then dangle their carrot infront of you just to entice you to leave. They use you to build their countries which is the grand scheme all along.. They say Nigerians are known for Scamming yet these same Western countries welcome you with open arms and because you now live there they hype you and change the narrative to NIGERIANS ARE HARD WORKING. I wonder where the scamming tag suddenly disappears to in such times? 1 Like |

ekerintee: Valid points. But the good thing is the unavailability of choices here. There are Christian schools, catholic schools, etc. So you get to choose the environment you want for your child without subject them to any unnecessary hardening. Africa is a good place but I think kids need to grow up where they'd eventually live. |

Yes, however the parent would still have to raise their child. If they let the streets raise their child, their child in Africa may end up being worse than those in the western world. Denrele, Charlie boy and Bobrisky all grew up here but their minds were probably elsewhere. |

Tetehjewels: Well, see it as you may, that's the perception. Nigeria is not the only country in Africa, why point them out? All the scamming crimes out here usually involve one Nigerian at least. I keep defending them but they wouldn't stop. Americans may have high tech scammers but if fate has made it such that our low tech scammers are the ones easily caught and thereby creating a false impression that there are more scammers in Nigeria, I can't deny that the impression isn't there just cause I want to be loyal. I'd gladly build any nation where I get value for it. You can keep building Nigeria, that's your choice. |

etrange: Again wrong perception and wrong understanding. Nigeria is the largest black Nation in the world and the leading African country and Western powers know that the only way to fully penetrate Africa is to weaken Nigeria thus the massive de-campaign against Nigeria which you have been brainwashed with Why do you think that when a Nigerian who happens to be an American citizen, etc commits a crime he is immediately described as a NIGERIAN IMMIGRANT but when he does something note worthy of the press he is described as a citizen of their country? A lot of African Nationals claim to be Nigerian in the face of crime and this is common knowledge. Stop joining them to run down your own country. Rather be bold enough to speak well of her if indeed your brainwashing is not yet complete. |

Raise your kids where you are residing. No need shipping kids to Africa to go learn one religion or language/culture Unless you are all moving there. If you live overseas, make sure to live in good community with good schools. If you can afford it, religion or private schools for elementary - high school. Teach your kids to respect people, obey the laws, rules and regulations. Don't put too much emphasis on Nigeria language - french or Hispanics or other general language is okay to learn and apply more than Nigerian languages. |

I've never been outside the borders but it is certain that kids raised in the 80s/early 90s were better raised than kids these days. A child was a collective effort then as neighbors could deal with a child and the parents won't misinterpret it for something else. Technology has made things more difficult these days and we are finding it difficult to cope with it. People prefer other form of discipline to usual beating. The western world have moved on from this stage we are and soon we'll find out that their method is better than ours. Raising kids in Nigeria these days is difficult |

Tetehjewels: Lol... Nigeria is known for scamming. Whether Nigerians are scammers or not is a different thing. Whether the perception was planted or not is a different thing. But is true that the country is known for scamming as we speak? The answer is Yes. You wouldn't need to to speak well of Nigeria if there was no existing impression to correctly. Why would you be offset when I mention this existing impression? You can argue that's not the reality but that's still what the country is known for despite the works of great Nigerians out there. There are other countries known for this too. |

Godbpraised:enough percentage to tell you that nigeria has lost what u would call family value any overseas sending his child back to nigeria with the intention that the child should be educated on the african value is wasting his or her time.the child could end up worse.nigeria is not as it was in the past.u can teach ur child the african value in whatever country u located. |

WoundedLamb: Don't mistake politeness for respect. It is politically correct to be polite to everyone you talk to, but that doesn't imply respect at all. As an example, just observe how they treat strangers and foreigners compared to how Africans treat strangers and foreigners. Especially in Scandinavian countries. I agree they'll smile and thank you for opening the door, but never notice you beyond a frown if you are of no use to them. WoundedLamb: There is little family support. Everyone is literally on his own financially. No one even thinks of taking his/her parents to live with them. And no, care homes are not only for when one is not around, they often lodge them there permanently, with fewer and fewer visits as time goes by. In Africa, we don't even have such homes. I call my parents every day and I escape at least every two or three days to taste my mother's superior cooking. My kids are as close to their grandparents as they are to us. Family relationships in Africa is a whole different category from that in Europe or the US. WoundedLamb: It doesn't have to be so. Apart from the manners and values, an American is probably tens of thousands of dollars in debt by the time he's out of university. An African goes there with a fresh degree, no crippling debt and an enthusiastic perspective for the future. And within one year, he is better off than many Americans. Emigrants almost always tend to excel. Throw an American into Nigeria on the other hand, and he's helpless once his cash runs out. He can in no way cope with life, and will probably run straight to the US embassy and beg for help. So aside from values and culture, an African upbringing teaches us adaptability. I would like my kids to be survivors wherever they find themselves. But I guess everyone will have their perspective on this. 1 Like 1 Share |

VenumX:In all honesty it is not the locality that makes a child good or bad the one on the left probably had loving parents, grew up in a good home and was raised in the right way while the one on the right probably never knew his dad since the dad was a deadbeat dad who never took to his responsibilities and the mom was probably busy jumping from one man to another.na the end result be that,if u want ur child to be good then be ready to play ur parent role and the child will follow the right path irregardless if its nigeria or US. |

Interesting read so far. I do agree with crackhaus and risenphoenix1 on some of their points. Personally, I think whatever you want to instill in a child( in naija or abroad ) should be instilled between 0 and 7 years, everything you would teach later is just a buildup of that initial teaching. You can't start teaching a child to greet, to reapect people, be disciplined, to obey parents basic morals after age 7, it just won't work, you start young. Once you miss that wherever you are I don't see what magic that will be performed, I think its a lot easier to instill such values in naija than abroad but then peeps have done it over there and the children turned out well. |
