Not on your life, Agatha thought and smiled. She shrugged. 'Alright. Thanks for your sermon, dear friend. I guess I have to face this squarely. It's my luck.'

Anfani came to hug her again. 'What a luck you have! What about us your friends? Are you not going to celebrate this 'big catch' for us?'

'Sure thing. This afternoon, we'll go to eatery to have good food. We'll also take drinks. You, Fatty and I: we'll have jolly time together.'

‘Yes, yes,’ Anfani gushed. ‘That’s what friends are for!’

Several days after Joe lost some valuables to Wendy, the police had neither been able to track Wendy down nor recover his stolen items. Joe found it difficult to believe that the lady would go un-apprehended and unpunished, just like that.

He had been telling those who cared to listen how grossly incompetent the police were. He however still believed she would be arrested and forced to pay for her crime.

He was trying to forget his misadventure with her and move on with life. This afternoon, he had asked Agatha to see him in his office by noon, when her lectures for the day would have ended.

She came to his office few minutes to one.

'Agatha, baby. See how you're shining every day.'

Agatha smiled. 'It's the grace of God,' she said.
Indeed, she was looking good. With the money she had made from Nelson Ovie, she had been able to upgrade her wardrobe.

She had been able to buy designers' wears and accessories. Nelson had not stopped at the money he first gave her. Last Saturday, she called him to thank him for the generosity he had displayed the previous day.

He had invited her to the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos Island, where he treated her to sumptuous meal. The surprising thing was that he had not gone beyond that; he had not made any sexual overture. That was very surprising.

'First and foremost, I want your friendship’, he had said. Agatha had consented whole-heartedly. There was no qualm with that, was there?

'I must say I miss your company in the last day,' Joe was saying.

Agatha grinned, but she was certain she was no longer comfortable with her lecturer or his love antics.

'Any way, I don't have much to say now. Let us meet at our usual place and at our usual time.

Then, I'll show how delectable you are and how I have improved in my sexual prowess.' He laughed at his own joke.

Agatha didn't find it funny but smiled.

'So, you can go, now. We'll meet at the rendezvous, then I'll show and prove to you that I'm much better now.'

She hated the smugness which Joe displayed, but she tried to appear impressed. She didn’t dissent but she inwardly resented another intimate moment with him. She would have to do something about him.

Another part of her mind told her that Nelson wanted more than he had shown, so far. But what exactly did he want?

Time would tell.

As for Dr. Joe, Agatha was seriously beginning to loathe the idea of continuing to have an affair with him. Whatever they had done in the past must belong to the past. Henceforth, there should be no re-enactment of such a thing.

Just then, the phone beeped to announce the coming of a text message. In the same audacious spirit, Clara picked up his phone to read the message.

'This message can't be from a niece,' she said in acrimony. 'The message from your Princess reads: 'I've just called to say hello. From Sade (Princess), your future wife.' Now, how can this so-called Princess be your niece?'

Manu was dumb-founded. What kind of silly joke was Princess playing? How could she write such a message and call herself his future wife?

'Princess is playing pranks,' he managed to say. 'She likes to play pranks.'

'I think you're the one playing pranks,' Clara said heatedly. 'You said the Princess' real name was Bola, but it turned out that she is Sade. Why did you tell me about marriage, when you've already got a lady?'

'Oh, no, no!' he said quickly and vehemently.

'Believe me, I never promised Princess, or any other lady, anything marriage. In truth, she's not a niece, but a friend. She likes to play pranks, and she's in the act, right now.'

Clara still made a face and he had say more to disabuse her mind.

'It cannot be,' he said pointedly. 'I stand before almighty God to proclaim that the only lady I've promised to marry is you, Clara. Let no call or message from anybody give you doubt.'

With his avowed declaration, she decided to believe him.




'You can stop the car here,' Agatha said. The driver did as he was told. Agatha got down from the car.

'Okay, goodnight,' she said.

'Goodnight,' the driver replied. It was a few meters to the gate of her father's residence, but she would walk the rest of the distance. Agatha didn't want her daddy to know about Nelson yet.

To avoid being asked about the owner of the posh car that came to drop her, she opted for getting down before getting to the house. The time was few minutes to eight in the evening.

The three children and daddy were at home.
Her sisters were glad to see her, as usual.

'Sister Agatha, good evening,' Nnena greeted.

The other two joined in the greeting.

'How're you all?' Agatha asked. The party answer was in the affirmative.

'How about daddy? Is he at home?'

'Yes, daddy's in his bedroom,' the youngest of the girls answered.

Agatha opened her bag to bring out niceties. There was a little something for everybody.

Nnena took her valise to the second bedroom, the one the girls used. After a while, Agatha decided to go and greet Eddie in his bedroom. She knocked at his door.

'Yes?' his voice called from inside.

She opened the door and went inside. 'Good evening, daddy.'

He looked up from the laptop he was working on by his bedside.

'Agatha. How're you?'

'Fine. How was wok?'

'We thank God. How was school too?'

'Fine. All is well.' Her mind went to Doctor Joe Sabada. Thank God he had stopped disturbing her. But wait a minute, why didn't she report his harassment to her father?

Eddie was a lawyer and could have easily taken up her case. Inwardly, she shrugged. Perhaps, God wanted Nelson to be the one to fight for her.

She was about to make a retreat from the bedroom when Eddie called her back.

'Sit down,' he said and pointed at one of the plastic chairs in the bedroom. He too sat up on the bed. That meant there was a serious matter to discuss.

She sat down and looked at him expectantly.

'Yes, there's this thing I've noticed about you in the last couple of weeks,' he started.

He looked at her intently. 'Take a look at yourself and tell me what's going on.'

She looked at herself from the bust down to her feet and shook her head. 'Daddy, I don't understand.'

'Really?' He raised an eyebrow. 'Let's start from your neck. That necklace you're wearing is solid gold. Then, your wrist. That wristwatch, Rolex or something, is very expensive. Look at the dress you're putting. I can bet that the perfume you're wearing is exotic. Where are you getting the money to buy all these?'

Agatha smiled. She was not surprised he was saying this. She had actually thought that sooner or later, he would say it.

Unconsciously, her eyes went to her left fingers. She had removed the diamond studded engagement ring Nelson had given her.

If she had not removed it, Eddie would have mentioned the item among the list that he just mentioned. Agatha smiled again. It was time to tell her father the truth.

'Actually, daddy, I've been meaning to tell you. There's this man I met who has been taking care of me.'

He nodded meaningfully. 'I knew it. I knew that a man or men would be behind this. Have you started prostituting your body or what?'

'Daddy, it's not as you think. And it's not men, but a man that is responsible for these changes. His name is Nelson Ovie. He has his own company and he's into clean business. Although he was married before, he wants to marry me. He's the one behind all these.'

Eddie opened his mouth. 'What? You mean you want to marry a papa all because he's doling out money on you?'

Agatha chuckled. 'He is not papa. Nelson looks young and energetic. I believe he's serious. I've told him about you and he is even eager to meet with you.’

Eddie looked at her for a while. 'How could you be sure that he is genuine and serious? How could you tell that he's really in love with you, and he's not a fraudster or a yahoo guy? How could you be sure he's not a ritualist?'

'He's serious, daddy. He really wants to marry me, as he said. He's not that young. He was married before and he's presently close to fifty. He said he would like to meet you. He has even given me engagement ring.'

‘What! Is that one not too old for you to marry?’

‘I think – believe – that he’s okay for me. He really wants to meet with you, dad.’

'I want to meet him too. I want to know details about him - where he works, where he lives, what he does for a living, and so on. I want you to bring him to this house as soon as possible. You're still very young, Agatha, and I don't want you to fall into the wrong hands.'

She thought briefly. 'I will have to contact him. If it is possible, he will come around tomorrow, Saturday.'

Eddie nodded. 'That is okay by me. That is very okay.'

That Friday evening, Anfani and Fatty were at the Queenzy Club to do what was becoming a regular weekend gig. Even among the crowd, Anfani could notice a particular guy that kept staring at her.

There were four of them doing the show, but the man's eyes did not leave her for once. Not surprisingly, after the show the man was waiting for her at the manager's office. It was almost a replica of what happened when Nelson showed interest in Agatha.

Once again, Cyril was playing the role of moderator.

'I'm Collins,' the man said. 'And I'm pleased to meet you. Your dance is as fascinating as your beautiful body.'

'Thank you,' Anfani replied.

'Where do you stay?' he asked. 'I'll like to know you more. I'll definitely like to see you again, not exactly in a place like this, but somewhere more discreet and private. Where d'you stay, queen?'

Anfani was very excited about his zeal. 'I'm a student of Lagoon-View University.'

'Oh, that's very good. But you've not even told me your name.'

'I'm Anfani. My friend here is Fatty.'

He shook hands with them. 'Are you going back to campus? I can give you a ride.'
Campus was not their exact destination that evening, but Anfani nodded in affirmative.

'Good, let's go,' he said.

They went out of the club. His car was a glistening Porsche car in the car lot. Even in the night, the car was glistening.

There was no doubt that it was a very expensive wonder on wheels. Fatty went to the back seat while Anfani stayed with Collins at the front.

The two chatted excitedly as if they had known each other for years. Fatty was taciturn and would have totally withdrawn to her shell if not that Anfani occasionally prodded her to answer a question or confirm a statement.

Many minutes later, Collins parked the car in front of their residential hall.

'It has been such a wonderful night, Anfani,' Collins said. 'Having your company has made my day.'

'It has been such a wonderful thing to meet with you too,' she replied.

'Can I come around tomorrow morning to take you out? I want this to be the beginning of a very loving relationship.'

Earlier, Anfani had told Fatty that she would be spending the whole weekend with her boyfriend. She expected Anfani to politely decline Collins' offer, but this was not to be.

'Why not?' Anfani answered. 'I'm free for the whole weekend.'

'Oh, that's very good. I'll come around tomorrow morning by ten. I hope that time is okay by you.'

'Sure.' She nodded.

He brought out a bundle of one hundred naira notes. 'You and your friend can have this for now.'

'Oh, yes,' Anfani said excitedly. 'I've been praying for the kind of luck Agatha has. Now, God is obviously about to answer my prayers.'

'Really?' Fatty said cautiously.

'Of course, is it not obvious?' She looked at the money in her hand. 'I know this is just the beginning of many good things that will still come. Now, how do we share this money?'

'Just give me any amount you think I deserve,' Fatty said. They went to Anfani's room. As soon as they stepped inside the room, Anfani counted thirty pieces and handed them to her friend. Fatty took them and put them in her purse, without any opposition.

'Thank you,' she said. 'And goodnight.'

Early on Saturday morning, Fatty was back in her friend's room.

'Anfani, I think you should not follow that man, Collins, or whatever his name is.'

'I know you'll say this,' Anfani retorted. 'I saw the big jealousy on you since yesterday. It was written all over your face!'

'It's not about jealousy,' Fatty quickly said. 'The dream I had about you is not a good one. I think you should not follow him out.'

Anfani burst out laughing. 'You see your life? You see what envy and jealousy will make you do?'

'But, Anfani, I'm serious.'

'Listen, Fatty, I beg you in the name of the Lord not to pour san san for my garri. Since when did you become Joseph, the dreamer? Please, if you don't have good things to say, go away.'

‘But …’

‘Hey, no but. Leave me alone, please.’

‘I’m only trying to counsel you as a friend.’

‘Keep your counsel, Fatty.’

Fatty realized the futility of her effort. She let Anfani be.

Nelson was in Eddie's house later that Saturday. He brought some wines and champagnes along.

'I'm happy to meet you,' he greeted Eddie by shaking his hand. 'Agatha has told me a lot about you.'

'You're welcome,' Eddie replied as he motioned his guest to a seat.

'I needed to confirm what my daughter told me,' Eddie went on. 'I needed to confirm what Agatha said about the relationship between the two of you. But first, what can I offer you?'
Nelson smiled. 'Water will be okay.'

'Just water?'

Nelson nodded. 'Yes, just water.'

Eddie ordered the house girl to bring a 150 cl. cold bottle of water with a glass cup.

Some moments later, Nelson dwelt on the main reason why he had come.

'I love Agatha, and I want to marry her,' he said. 'I know there's a wide age gap between us, but then, it's my firm belief that love conquers all.'

He went on to tell him about his family, his first wife and children. 'Loving Agatha matters a lot. I'm ready to give her all the love she deserves. I will give her the best of love a man should give a woman.'

Eddie nodded. He needed no further confirmation.

'I needed to be sure she is in the right hand. I needed to be certain she's not manipulated,' Eddie said.

'She's in the hands of a man that loves her,' Nelson asserted.

Monday was always a busy day for Agatha. Her lectures started nine in the morning. By noon, she would have a break. By one o'clock, she would resume lectures.

It was three o'clock that the lectures would finally end. During the recess she had at noon, she went to a nearby eatery to eat. She then relaxed in a lecture room and resumed her lectures by one p.m.

It was few minutes after three o'clock that she went back to her hostel room. To her surprise, she discovered that Anfani had not returned to the campus since Saturday.

'That's quite strange,' Agatha told Mene, her second roommate. 'Normally, she should be back latest by Sunday evening.'

She picked her phone and dialed Anfani's two known numbers. None could get through. Concerned, Agatha went to Fatty's room.

'Where's Anfani?' she asked as if the latter was Anfani's care-giver.

'You mean she has not come back?' Fatty thoroughly looked ruffled.

'Oh my God! I warned her. I warned her not to go out with Collins or whatever his name is on Saturday!'

'What're you saying?' Agatha was nonplused.

'We met a man at the club on Friday who showed great interest in her. He called his name Collins. On Saturday morning, he was around to pick her for outing.

Over the night, I had a bad dream about her and I came to warn her not to go with the man, but she accused me of jealousy. That was the last time I saw her.'

'This is serious,' Agatha said.

By the following morning when they had still not seen Anfani, Agatha became really worried. In addition to whatever the matron and the university authority would do, Agatha decided to inform Nelson.

She did not have any contact of any of Anfani's relatives. It was Tuesday morning and Nelson was on his way to work when Agatha's call came through.

'Good morning, dear,' she greeted.

'Honey, how're you?'

'I'm not feeling fine. Anfani, my friend and roommate has been missing since Saturday.'

'Really?'

'Yes. Fatty said it's a man they met in the club on Friday that came on Saturday to pick her. Since then, we've not seen her. We tried to contact her numbers but none was going.'

'That's serious,' he said. There was a pause. 'But, you don't need to worry your head, my dear. I'll see what I can do.'

'Please, do something,' she pleaded.

'I will. For now, calm down. There's no need you worry your head.'

Agatha nodded. 'Okay, dear.'

‘I will swing into action at once. Relax your mind.’

Agatha grinned. She wished she could really believe him. ‘Okay, love.’

Kay was the Manager of Pleasure-Zone Restaurant and Bar. In his two years on the job, he had experienced a lot of things - some pleasant, and some unsavory. In his little way, he had been able to manage the place well.

That meant he had succeeded in making good business for his employer. However, in the last couple of weeks or so, business had been dull.

Some of the regular customers such as Femi and Manu had, for reasons best known to them, stopped coming. Juliet too had withdrawn her service and it appeared Princess was following suit.

There was a particular customer who used to come with friends. They knew him as Big Balo. Big Balo would come, order for drinks for himself and his friends and they would all have jolly time.

It was amazing the kind of capacity Big Balo had for drinking. Even after five bottles, he would be as sober as a priest. And he could drink on and on.

Yesterday, Balo, a very valuable customer, had made an unusual request.

'Where is Princess?' he had asked Kay.

Kay had scratched his head. 'It's like she's not coming here again,' he answered.

'What? So, where does she go, now? Make her come o. I miss her already.'

What a thing to say! How could Big Balo say that? Were there no other ladies?

'Get her back, or I'll go where she goes,' Balo added.

‘Are you serious?’

Balo looked at sternly at him. ‘Do I look like a comedian? Get that Princess for me.’

Now, it looked like a light comment, but Kay did not want to take things for granted. Some moments later, he picked his phone to call Princess. Sade was at the boutique where she was now working as sales attendant when Kay's call came through.

'Good afternoon, Princess,' he greeted.

'How're you today?'

'Fine. How're you too?'

'Well, we thank God. I thought you have fully recovered. Why are you not at work?'

Work indeed! Sade thought grimly. She however managed to maintain a cool mien.

'Thank you for your concern, Kay. I'm okay now.'

'So, are you resuming today?'

He made it look like he was asking her when she was resuming work in an oil and gas company.

'No, Kay. I'm not resuming today, and I'm not ever going to resume there again.'

'What! Why?' he almost bellowed. 'Why're you leaving us?'

'I can't continue with that kind of job again. I've turned a new leaf now.'

'Big Balo has been asking of you. He misses you and wants you back in a big way.'

She grimaced. In her mind, she said to hell with Big Balo. She however spoke in polite manner.

'Tell Balo to look for any other lady.'

'But it's you Balo wants!’ Kay was almost yelling. ‘Balo really misses you. Look, from the way he talks, he is ready to spend on you handsomely.'

Again, she felt like saying to hell with Big Balo, but she suppressed the urge.

'Tell him I'm not into that kind of thing again; that I’m a totally different person. Good bye.'
With that, Sade cut the line.
