PoliticsAnother 536 Nigerians Evacuated From Libya by potofsoup(op): 2:32am On Mar 01, 2011
http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/18209-another-536-nigerians-evacuated-from-libya

The evacuation exercise embarked upon by the Federal Government to bring back stranded Nigerians in Libya has recorded additional 536 evacuees who were successfully flown to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Sunday night from Tripoli International Airport.

The total number of the evacuees so far, after the first batch of 499, is now 1,035 returnees which included adults and children.

The Director-General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Muhammad Sani-Sidi, while receiving the second batch at the airport said that the next flight, after receiving all necessary clearance, would leave for Tripoli today to bring back remaining Nigerians that had been registered and screened for the evacuation.

He said so far NEMA had continued to provide foods and medication as required for the evacuees at the designated special camp on Abuja International Airport road. He said that transportation arrangements were provided to take the passengers to their respective states of origin.

Welcoming the returnees to Nigeria on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Martin Uhomoibhi, said the Federal Government was passionate about the well-being of Nigerians and was glad to see them safely back to the country. He urged the returnees to be law-abiding citizens and contribute to national development.

One of the returnees, Bash Ali, a Nigerian professional boxer, who was in Tripoli for medical treatment, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for giving the directive for the evacuation exercise and the courteous and speedy response of response agencies for the intervention, especially the NEMA, security personnel and foreign affairs.

Bash Ali said that, “I am proud to be a Nigerian… I am proud of this encouraging exercise. Home is home… and home is sweet nothing is more comforting than to be among your people at home.”

He said as an African he was not happy at the turn of the event in Libya, saying that the crisis was caused by bad advisers rather than a single individual.

There evacuation exercise being coordinated by NEMA is targeted as evacuating over 2000 stranded Nigerians who are willing to return to Nigeria from the crisis in Libya.
PoliticsTinubu’s Call For Doctors’ Sack, A Slip Of Tongue - Nma Boss by potofsoup(op): 2:29am On Mar 01, 2011
http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/18205-tinubus-call-for-doctors-sack-a-slip-of-tongue-nma-boss

The chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Edamisan Temiye, has described as “a slip of tongue” and an “empty threat” the call by former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu for the sack of the striking doctors in the state.

Tinubu made the call recently in Lagos while reacting to the prolonged strike of the doctors saying that it was not compulsory that the doctors worked in the civil service.

But Dr Temiye told journalists in Lagos on Monday at a press conference that the doctors would not succumb to any threat, intimidation or blackmail from the state government or its agent.

“I am sure this is a mere threat. It is not possible to sack all the doctors. By the way, where will they get replacement? Doctors are not even enough not to talk of sacking some.”

In another development, Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum (YRLF), has condemned Tinubu over the statement that the doctors on strike should be sacked, stating that, “if Tinubu is truly a good leader, he should not even contemplate such not to talk of advising anyone to do that,” adding that, “if it were to be during his administration, he cannot do better than he has advised.”

A statement signed by the secretary-general of the group, Mr. Akin Malaolu, said that “the utterances is a further confirmation of the repugnancy of political leaders into appropriating to themselves leadership without any affirmation from the people.”

“Brother Bola Tinubu” in his vituperation and ranting forgot too soon that he is not the doctors’ employer and therefore his right to communicate directly in the matter is limited. We believe that spoken or written material should not contain matters which tend to “threaten”, “coerce” or “interfere with the doctors in connection in their union activities or in their relationship with their employer.

What we noticed so far was that the state government has negotiated in the dark without given attention to details and this has turned out to be a disaster for it, but the doctors are more conscious and articulate in terms of expected remunerations going by the strength of their strike.

The group therefore urged Governor Fashola to ignore Tinubu and continue to dialogue with the doctors’ union without losing his cool. Fashola must at this period re-evaluate realistically the reliability of those negotiating on his behalf as it is important to remember that the people are sad, forlorn in hope and would grieve when they are confronted with sick relations without redemption from those that should promote their welfare.
PoliticsFg Appoints Acting Head 4 Code Of Conduct Tribunal.to Begin Trial Of Bola Tinubu by potofsoup(op): 2:24am On Mar 01, 2011
FG appoints acting head for Code of Conduct Tribunal •To begin trial of Bola Tinubu, others

http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/front-page-news/18229-fg-appoints-acting-head-for-code-of-conduct-tribunal-to-begin-trial-of-bola-tinubu-others

AN acting chairman has been appointed for the Code of Conduct Tribunal, in order to kickstart the trial of former and public officers that had been charged by the Code of Conduct Bureau for allegedly contravening laws governing assets declaration.

Nigerian Tribune exclusively gathered on Monday that an emergency and unpublicised swearing-in of Danladi Yakubu Umar will take place this morning at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The swearing-in will be performed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysious Katsina-Alu.

Spokesperson of the Code of Conduct Bureau, Mrs Idowu Jokpeyibo, confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune last night that Umar, the only sitting member of the tribunal, had been given letter of appointment as the acting boss.

According to her, “I can confirm to you that he (Umar) has been given letter as the acting chairman. I cannot say more than this for now.”

Umar, a lawyer, is said to have been made the acting chairman of the tribunal following the inability of the body to attend to its statutory responsibilities, especially in the areas of prosecuting accused persons charged to the tribunal by the Bureau over alleged non-compliance with the laws guiding assets declaration by public officers.

He was reportedly notified of his swearing-in just yesterday (Monday).

Three members are statutorily required to sit on cases but two are constitutionally needed to form a quorum.

It could not be confirmed last night if the other two members had already been appointed by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, which supervises the bureau and the tribunal.

Umar was said to have been appointed to the tribunal about two years ago and had been handling the affairs of the tribunal along with the late Muritala Adebayo Sanni, who died a few weeks ago.

Sanni was acting when Justice Constance Momoh retired from the tribunal last year.

The death of Sanni left only Umar as member and with his elevation, a source revealed that two members would soon be appointed to begin trial of accused persons in full force. Our sister publication, the Saturday Tribune had exclusively reported that the death of Sanni had stalled the trial of former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu, who was charged with operating foreign accounts, as governor between 1999 and 2007.

Jokpeyibo had confirmed to our correspondent that the bureau immediately filed an amended criminal charge against Tinubu at the Code of Conduct Tribunal for immediate prosecution.

According to her, “the charge against him for operating foreign accounts as governor, which is against the constitution, was filed some weeks ago. The EFCC handed over the case file to us since the bureau is empowered to prosecute such matter. We have re-filed the case, which could not go on in April 2007 because he had immunity then.

“You remember that the EFCC took over the case file, when his immunity as governor stalled it. But it was handed back to the bureau some weeks ago and we have taken the necessary steps to commence his prosecution. This has got nothing to do with politics, because there is tendency for politics to be read into any step one takes during election period. The case is now with the Code of Conduct Tribunal.”
It was gathered that the case file was returned to the bureau shortly after the courtesy visit of his boss, Sam Saba, to the chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs Farida Waziri.

Checks at the Tribunal revealed that Tinubu’s trial was being put on hold by the death of the tribunal’s chairman, Justice Muritala Adebayo Sanni, a few weeks ago.

He was said to have died about two weeks after the charge was filed and cases being handled by the tribunal could not go on.

In the amended charge, the former governor was accused of engaging in the operation of several foreign bank accounts since he assumed office in 1999 till date, “contrary to section 7 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, Cap 56 LFN, 1990 and punishable under section 23 (2) thereof as incorporated under paragraph 18, part I, Fifth Schedule to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
PoliticsRe: 90% Of People On Nairaland Will Not Even Vote- So, Does Their Opinion Matter? by potofsoup(op): 12:41am On Mar 01, 2011
Truth is - opinions here matters nothing. It ends right here. Or where do you think it goes to? Even, think of it. How many Nigerians of voting age comes here and reads and then changes their opinion about anything?

Its just an avenue for frustrated individuals to vent their frustration on one another, trust me. If not, why will people curse each other unprovoked? Curse each other because he doesnt agree to your views? Come on. This is an avenue to come to when your partner insults you and you find no one to vent the anger on. Or when you are tired in you studies and want some air. Look. Opinions here dont pass here.

You feel me?

No wonder GEJ, Ribadu and Buhari doesnt know about NL. They know they cant reach anyone in there because the place is full of people who will not even cast a vote talkless of anything else. So, whats the in fighting on NairaLand for? All the name calling, etc? why dissipate all the energy when you wont even vote?

The politicians have chosen the platform that matters to them - Facebook, because they know they can reach millions whose votes will count, not the people here who are abroad and frustrated about their inability to come home.

Is it then worth it?

the law is the law.

LOL. Whether you like it or not.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, Abah said that other individuals, including judges, top military and police brass, are not allowed by law to use tinted glasses on their cars, and that they should therefore remove them to avoid embarrassment.

The minister stated that the current situation where seven out of ten vehicles were tinted posed a great challenge to security personnel as they find it difficult to identify occupants and contents of such heavily filmed cars.

“Whether we are honourables, chief honourables and traditional rulers, we are meant to be seen by the people we are administering. Those in authorities should ensure that the tints on their car glasses are removed. Policemen have authority to remove the tints on the spot. All Commissioners of Police in all the states and the FCT are to ensure strict compliance to the law. By this announcement, all permits given in respect of tinted glasses are hereby cancelled,” Abah said.

You are concentrating your effort on a man who has served his time and purpose for his "offences" - while thousand others like Tinubu roam the streets without persecution. Why not spend your time, energy and time on getting him prosecuted and spending wrist slapping jail time as well? At least the people you mentioned served their time. No point wasting time talking about them anymore. Ok?.

I love this man. While others rely on name calling and propaganda to see them win the election, this man takes Naija politics to new heights, talks without character assassination which is the hallmark of all his opponents.

Come on, brother. God bless yah real good. I know they will follow with insults and curses and name calling, but that doesnt change a thing sir. Even if they call you clueless, daft, moroon, bastard etc- it doesnt change anyone's opinion. Ride on sir while others relish in their character assassination.
PoliticsThe Core Of Who Am I - Gej by potofsoup(op): 5:24pm On Feb 28, 2011
As I go about Nigeria campaigning, I am telling Nigerians my detailed plans for Nigeria. However, today I want to talk to you about the core of why I am in public service.

Public office to me is not a means to adding value to the holder of the office. Publc office is the vehicle through which social harmony, happiness and inspirational communal existence is promoted and enhanced. I personally do not believe that you become a 'big man' by simply holding a public office. No! People with that type of mentality are only borrowing moral authority from the office they occupy and as soon as they leave that office that authority leaves them.

I believe that public office is a pedestal for you to use your strength of character to add value to the office by serving the people you are meant to serve and giving glory to our Creator.

Some people accuse me of being humble to the point of servility. They do not understand that the whole purpose of public office is to serve. This is why our late great leader, Umaru Musa Yar'adua said that we were servant leaders. We have not come to demand service from Nigeria but to give service.

This is the principal reason why I opened this page to communicate with Nigerians. I am acutely aware that I do not hold this position of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the wishes of any power other than the freely given mandate of the Nigerian people and the grace of God. And that is why I communicate with you because next to the Almighty God, the Nigerian people are my power source and just as an electrical appliance will not work when not connected to it's power source so also can I not work effectively if I am not connected with you the good people of Nigeria.

And while there are politicians who have substantial commitment to Nigeria and others who may have partial commitment to Nigeria, my commitment to Nigeria is total and there is evidence to back it up.

It is believed that a man's greatest treasures are his children and immediate family and the proverb goes that where a man's treasures are there his heart also will be. All my children, every last one of them school in Nigeria and of course my wife and I are fully on the ground. Some might describe other treasures a man has as his real estate property. And again every property I have in life is in Nigeria. Some might consider money as another treasure and again all my accounts every last one of them is domiciled in Nigeria. In everything I do I make a conscious decision to put Nigeria first whether it is in my dressing or the food I eat, or even the music I listen to. I am totally sold out on Nigeria.

What does this tell you? My commitment to Nigeria is not partial, neither is it substantial, but it is total. You can trust me to take good decisions on behalf of Nigeria because I am a stakeholder whose progress is tied to the progress of Nigeria.

This is the core of who Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is. I have made myself an open book, completely transparent to Nigerians because I want to earn your trust. I do not want to demand trust, but I want to inspire it by the way I live my life and with your help and God's favour I shall continue to do this. GEJ
