Because Peter Obi lost an election, a lot of people have (bitterly) posted absolute rubbish on social media regarding President Tinubu, especially here on Nairaland.

This has culminated in Ikemefuna posting even more nonsense and again, President Tinubu has looked the other way.

If President Tinubu had prosecuted just one person on Nairaland, a lot of there allegations from Obidients would have slowed downm Of course there is a side issue with the moderation on Nairaland as well.

I do hope Tony Elumelu has pity on this unfortunate boy, but if he doesn't, I have no issues with it.

Tinubu fighting over these will only:
* Give Rufai OSENI and the ARISE team with enough ammunition.
*Inebehe enough opportunity to practice what he learnt at the NLS.
* FALANA and the likes to create a new constitution.
*Sowore an opportunity to be more popular.
* VDM enough access to the governorship of his state come 2099
* Various poorly educated social media experts to mushroom all over.

Let's break it down without the emotions:

*What he legally did wrong:*
Under Nigeria's Cybercrimes Act 2015 (as amended 2024), what he tweeted falls under cyberstalking or false information that can cause breakdown of law and order or damage reputation. Section 24. It's not treated as just "trolling" anymore. Once you attach a real, respected person's name to a sexual allegation you cannot prove, especially someone like Tony Elumelu's wife who is not a public entertainer, it moves from banter to criminal defamation.

That's why police could arrest, arraign, and get a remand at Ikoyi. The law allows it.

*Why the family videos may not help:*
Tagging Tony Elumelu daily with Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4 of apology is actually bad strategy. To a billionaire, it looks like emotional blackmail on the timeline. And legally, forgiveness from Elumelu does not automatically end a criminal case - because the charge is Federal Republic of Nigeria vs Deriko, not Tony Elumelu vs Deriko. The complainant can write a letter of mercy, but the police or court still decides.

*What usually works in these 19-year-old cases:*

1. Stop the public apology thread immediately. One formal, private apology letter through a lawyer to Tony Elumelu's office, carries more weight, than 7 online apology videos.
2. Get a lawyer focused on bail variation and plea bargain, not just begging. His final exams which he is going to write in the university, is a strong ground for bail, not for acquittal.
3. Show remorse + take down + undertaking not to repeat. Courts in Nigeria have been lenient when the offender is young, first time, and the tweet was deleted.
4. Family should reach out to the nominal complainant's legal team privately, not via Twitter.

The painful truth: He, Deriko, a 19 years old undergraduate student, used AI images to deceive people that he was a wealthy older man based abroad. He already built a pattern of impersonation. Then he used that same platform to defame a family, as prominent as that of Billionaire Tony Elumelu. At 19 years, he thought the consequences was going to be highest only online "dragging". Now he is chewing half-cooked beans in Ikoyi prison.

If Tony Elumelu shows mercy, it will be out of compassion, not because he is obligated to. A 19-year-old with 8 siblings missing final examinations, over one tweet, is exactly the kind of story that needs one adult to say "let him go and warn him seriously."

But that mercy has to be sought properly, not through daily Twitter tags.

If his family likes, let them foolishly go ahead today and do a Day 5 online apology video to Tony Elumelu. Then they may have to continue till Day 100.
