TWO persons were killed in Saki, Oyo State, on Thursday as angry youths in the town engaged officers of Nigeria Customs Service in a bloody fight.

Our correspondent gathered that some Customs officers chased a driver, who they claimed smuggled bags of rice into the town.

The driver, whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, was said to have been shot dead in the process.

The killing was said to have triggered a violent reaction from the youths of the town, who attacked the Customs office in the town and also killed an officer of the NCS during the showdown.


Sources said the NCS office was set ablaze and vehicles parked there were damaged, but it was not clear if the building was completely burnt.

Although nobody was said to have been killed apart from the two earlier cases, some residents, it was gathered, sustained injuries.

In order to prevent further loss of lives and property, the Okere of Saki, Oba Khalid Olabisi, imposed curfew on the town starting from 7pm on Thursday.

The Director of Media of the Okere Palace, Mr Akeem Olabisi, said, “Kabiyesi has imposed a curfew, which starts from 7pm. This was done to prevent the situation from degenerating.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Olugbenga Fadeyi, said a resident was killed during a faceoff between some persons and a team of Joint Task Force, which comprised policemen, Customs officers, soldiers and others.

First of all is the money even there.
This guy came and cleared so many debts that Oshiomole owed. Especially workers, He is the most worker friendly Governor we have ever had. I know pension arrears that he cleared, backlogs. He spent time working on the finances of the state and blocking loopholes. Contracts were not over inflated anymore. People had to do things the right way. He spent so much in training teachers. I witnessed two of those trainings myself. His Tax reforms are superb, that's why drivers welfare are supporting him. Have you send Workers against him, the few ones who came out from Ekiadolor ask them how much they say he is owing. Business people love him, market people love him because he dealt with multiple taxation and Agberos can't wake and issue their own tickets. He is constructing major roads in Benin but he has done so many streets and and lanes. Not just in Benin but elsewhere. We were lucky in Edo that we never went into full lockdown. During the corona peak, he gave commercial bus drivers tax free months.

The people against him are just politicians. Obaseki doesn't even know how it works. It his deputy who knows it. When Obaseki went on a month break, he made his deputy to be acting. Do you know that when the security vote for that month came, the deputy gave it to Obaseki, but the man told his deputy that the money was his because he was acting then. This is a man who doesn't really seek power. He is fighting because he has been pushed to the wall and taken for granted too much. Almost everybody who worked with him were nominated by Oshiomole. Tell me what else do they want from him. It is this people who could not see a way of stealing that complained to Oshiomole for him to go against Obaseki.

The governor has made lots of stride and you don't see him as a loud person. The people you see everywhere with Ize iyamu are politicians. For the first time Edo masses are against the political elite. Yes he has his fault no doubt. People here don't really hate Ize iyamu, but 60-70% of Edo people don't like Oshiomole forget the media hype you see.


I tell people that, the election will not be easy for anybody. You guys will see, if the election is free and fair, I bet you Obaseki will win. The sympathy he is drawing is too much. Go to the street people are angry with him that Oshiomole is still walking, that Kabaka is still a free man. People want him to use his powers. This election is all about Egos.

The Edo State Government has condemned the attack on Governor Obaseki and his supporters during his campaign at Etsako West, ward 10, in Edo North Local Government Area.

Obaseki had embarked on a ward-to-ward campaign to seek for votes ahead of the September 19 governorship election, but his campaign train came under attack by suspected hoodlums.

The governor’s Special Adviser, Media and Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said, “The Governor’s campaign team was attacked today (Thursday) by men believed to be sponsored by Adams Oshiomhole and Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

“The reason why we are so sure is because the governor is embarking on a ward to ward campaign, not local government like the APC is doing.

“The governor was just actually arriving at the ward that Oshiomhole belongs to which is Etsako West ward 10; so some people were planted close to the location and started shooting at the governor’s campaign team. The plan was to scare the governor from coming and scare away the governor’s supporters who were already there.


“And interestingly the people didn’t even run away. I heard that a child was hit by a stray bullet from a locally-made gun and fortunately the child survived. But the governor still went ahead to hold the rally after the irresponsible behaviour of the hoodlums.”

However, the Head of Media, APC campaign committee, John Mayaki, described the allegation as baseless.

He said, “We should all go out to campaign. I am busy in my village campaigning. All they do is accusing. I really don’t want to respond. We should be campaigning now and trying to win votes for our parties.

“The campaign should be issue-based. I am not interested in accusation against Oshiomohle because he is not event contesting in the election. They have been spreading falsehood about him. They should go and campaign.”

A businessman, Mark Davies, is demanding justice after allegedly being falsely accused of attempted rape by a woman, Chiamaka Hamzat, in the Wagbare Estate area of the Igbogbo-Bayeku Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that trouble started between Mark and Chiamaka when the executive of the estate purchased a transformer to power the area and demanded money from each landlord before they could be connected.

In a bid to power his house, Mark, whose building is located about 400 metres away from an electric pole, reportedly paid the estate management and purchased a long wire, which was connected to the pole.

Chiamaka and her husband, Yusuf, were said to have approached Mark to connect to his wire after paying the fee demanded by the estate management.

Mark told PUNCH Metro that the reason the couple approached him was to avoid purchasing a long wire to connect to the pole, which is at a far distance away from their house, adding that after he agreed, they went behind him to connect another building.

The Rivers State indigene said, “It was when the current started fluctuating that I traced the wire and confirmed that they had connected another building without informing me. I told Chiamaka to inform her husband to disconnect the other building, because two of my television sets had developed faults as the power was fluctuating, but they refused; so, I personally disconnected the two buildings.

“Unsatisfied with my action, Chiamaka and her husband reported me to the Wagbare Estate CDA executive and they all visited me at home and during the meeting, I told them that I could not please them at my own expense. Our conclusion at the meeting was that they should buy their wire and connect directly to the pole.

“They were not happy with the conclusion and since then, Chiamaka had been abusing me whenever she saw me passing, but I always ignored her. But on February 28, 2020, after the school bus took my kids to school, I was returning home when she accosted me and poured a bucket of water on my body. I became annoyed and told her that I would get her arrested.

“She held on to my clothe, tore it and cut my necklace, but unknown to her, I was recording the assault. I never touched her and I have recordings of the incident. I left her and went home to avoid further trouble and went to hospital to treat myself because I was sick.”

The story, however, took another dimension when the father of four said Chiamaka went to the Ikorodu Divisional Police Station to accuse him of attempted rape and tore her clothes to authenticate her claim.

He added that despite presenting overwhelming evidence to refute her claim, the police were still bent on prosecuting him.

Mark said, “You won’t believe that this woman personally tore her clothes and went to the Ikorodu Divisional Police Station to misinform the police that I came to rape her and she refused and I started beating her and tore her clothes in the process.

“I went to the station and the Investigating Police Officer, Sergeant Adenike David, started saying I went to rape a married woman and tore her clothes in the process. I was shocked. So, I played the recording to her and her colleagues and they were surprised that Chiamaka came to lie to them.

“They said if not for the recording, I would have been charged for rape. So, Adenike called Chiamaka to come to the station and on getting there, she asked her why she lied and she said because I am a single man, people would easily believe her story. Adenike started begging me, but I refused and she gave me a caution paper despite her colleagues telling her that the woman was now the suspect.


“The case was later transferred to the OC, who tried to mediate between us and wanted me to leave the matter, but I refused. The case was moved to the Divisional Crime Officer, Uzoma Martins, who heard from both of us, but refused to take a look at the recording, and at the end of the day, said the woman should be released, because she was a first-time offender, but I insisted that there was nothing like that in law. They even tried to change the incident to a matter of two persons fighting.”

In a bid to get justice, Mark said he petitioned the Assistant Inspector-General in-charge of Zone 2 and a signal was sent for the transfer of the case, but Adenike allegedly refused until she was threatened with a query.

“Chiamaka was brought to the Zone 2 Command headquarters on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. I want justice because my name is involved and I have children; I don’t want somebody to refer to them as children of a rapist tomorrow. I want justice, because this kind of thing can affect other men as some other women can rise up anytime and accuse them of rape and the police will take sides with them, because the law favours women than men,” he added.

When contacted, Chiamaka stated, “I poured water on him on that day because he had been embarrassing me, but I did not report to the police that he attempted to rape me.”

However, a telephone conversation between Mark and Adenike, which was made available to our correspondent, put a lie to Chiamaka’s claim.

In the conversation, Mark asked, “How can she (Chiamaka) allege that I was almost raping her and beat her and tore her clothe?

Adenike responded, “That is her complaint; that is what she told me and when I heard what you recorded, didn’t I scold her in the presence of her husband that she was the one that caused everything?”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Zone 2 Police Command, Hauwa Idris, described PUNCH’s journalists as impatient, adding, “Allow the police to do their work to find out whether the woman is telling lies. That is how one of your reporters went to write rubbish against me the other time.”
