The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG)
in charge of Zone 4, Kalafite Helen Adeyemi, on
Tuesday said the police has begun an
investigation to probe the incident that led to the
killing of a 50-year-old woman now identified as
Ronke Adelugba, in Akure, the Ondo State
capital.
Mrs. Adelugba was suddenly killed on Sunday at
her residence at No. 1 Akinyemi Street, off Ijoka
Road, Sijuwade close, by a seven-man squad of
police officers from the Ala unit of the Oda
Division Police Station, Ondo State Command, in
Akure.
Apart from being a longtime widow, Mrs.
Adelugba is the Accord Party ward woman leader
in the state, SaharaReporters learned from
sources.
Adeyemi addressed journalists in Akure shortly
after a closed-door meeting with women leaders
and community representatives, and said the
police officers that were involved in the matter
have also been arrested.
She disclosed that the officers should exhibit the
fear of God and lamented over the recurrent
extra judicial killings of innocent civilians in the
state.
“The police officers in the state should
remember ‘there is God’ and [I] am appealing to
their conscience,” she said.
Adeyemi revealed that the officers have already
been placed under detention with the move to
unravel the circumstances that caused the death
of the 50-year-old woman.
“The Commissioner of Police in the state as I
was briefed on actions taken, the [policemen]
involved have been arrested and are under
detention,” she quickly told the waiting
journalists.
Thereafter, the AIG guaranteed that the police
would make sure “justice” prevails in its cause of
investigating the crime.
Earlier, the AIG had embarked on familiarization
tour of the State Command of the Nigeria Police
Force, where she charged officers to double up
in the fight against crime.
Also speaking concerning the incident, the
outgoing Commissioner of Police in the state,
Isaac Eke, described the incident as
“unfortunate.”
Eke said the command is currently investigating
the issue while two suspected criminals who
were wanted by the police were arrested during
the raid on the street.
The police boss disclosed that the arrested
persons would help police in its investigation to
unravel the actual cause of the woman’s death.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters’ latest investigation
has shown that the command was trying to
cover up the incident.
Police sources told our correspondent that the
command is likely to issue a press statement
and dispatch it to journalists in an attempt to
deny any link of its officers over the case.
