babacares: Apart from this, pos settlement is usually T+1, you can actually, most likely if you report to your bank immediately before the end of the day, the merchant account will not be settled, also you can apply for dispute and you will get your money back. The investigation takes months |

abfalkolly: It's big deal bro,wht he said is very right,if truely thy used POS,the chance of being caught is high..God bless naija.. Card based transactions i.e transfers don't show the names of sender or beneficiary. It is upon further investigation that the bank gets information on the account that was credited . Which takes a while and before such information can be given to the victim he would also need to provide a court order, because it's 3rd party information. And you don't get court order immediately you request for it bcoz you need police report affidavit and then you use that to get the court order, which also sometimes takes more than a week. In this period, of course, they account must have been cleared. The only thing that the bank would then do is to place a restriction on the account. The safest thing to do, is to have another account that is not card based. God is the utmost protector anyway. Theses guys are not playing |

madgoat: The police are incompetent. This is not the first time we are hearing of people robbing with POS. Even in Lagos a lot of stories are shared of how 'one chance' robbers use POS but we have never heard the outcome of any investigation or any arrests being made tied to the POS. Card based transactions i.e transfers don't show the names of sender or beneficiary. It is upon further investigation that the bank gets information on the account that was credited . Which takes a while and before such information can be given to the victim he would also need to provide a court order, because it's 3rd party information. Reference: Exactly. Sensitive devices require multiple redundancies. Have multiple bank accounts all with a different method of access. You can have just one (or max two debit cards with only one on your person at all times), another access by online banking only, another by cheque only, another OTC only. If you wish another for just cardless withdrawals. Just like comm devices, never do dual sim and never pitch your entire life on one mobile network. All these things could be hacked and your sensituve data compromised. In Nigeria thus us common sense but yet again contributes to the high cost of living and doing business we all talk about. Collective/institutional security lags terribly behind.
A cous lost her purse to pick pockets at a supermart and it was a traumatic experience. First she had to shut every physical and cyber backdoor. Then she had to battle only God knows if they were swindlers or abductors who had so much data on her and then had to go through the maze of red tape to replace card after card from banks to PVC. I was amazed that one could be so naive as to carry around on ones person the twenty or so cards and devices that defines ones life. Even with armed escort you will never catch me with more than a couple of phones (two networks), one debit card, drivers license, security access card and five thousand in loose change. That is the limit of what I can afford to loose in one fell swoop to accidents or incidents. ?? |

CharleyBright: It is a booming business in Abuja. Armed gangs posing as drivers and passengers and robbing unsuspecting passengers. But what I don't understand if true is the use of POS to rob. That will be a foolish thing to do, as all POS are tied to an account,- an account is tied to a name and BVN. If robbers rob and use POS to debit accounts, the account tied to the POS is credited. All police investigation requires is to trace the account tied to the POS, and the criminals can easily be identified irrespective of the fact that they withdraw the money. Card based transactions i.e transfers don't show the names of sender or beneficiary. It is upon further investigation that the bank gets information on the account that was credited . Which takes a while and before such information can be given to the victim he would also need to provide a court order, because it's 3rd party information.
