President Trump Wondered Out Loud If Injecting Disinfectant Could Cure COVID-19
On Thursday evening, after the Labor Department reported that 4.4 millionAmericans filed jobless claims in the past week, California announced its deadliest day since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and New York City’s top health official estimated that a million New Yorkers have already been exposed to the virus, President Donald Trump speculated about the possibility of curing COVID-19 patients by injecting them with disinfectant or exposing the insides of their bodies to ultraviolet light.
Trump’s comments at the daily coronavirus task force briefing came after William Bryan, the Department of Homeland Security under secretary for science and technology, gave a presentation about new research into how long the virus can survive under different environmental conditions. According to Bryan, “emerging results” show that the virus degrades faster in warmer temperatures and higher humidity, and that it dies quickest when exposed to direct sunlight. However, Bryan was careful to say that it would be “irresponsible” to suggest this means summer should be a “free-for-all.” He also noted that bleach and ammonia are effective ways to kill the virus on surfaces.
Trump quickly seized on the findings to brag that he had once predicted the virus would “go away” when exposed to heat. (“I think when we get into April, in the warmer weather, that has a very negative effect on that and that type of a virus,” he said in one interview in February. “So let’s see what happens, but I think it’s going to work out fine.”) But then, of course, Trump could not resist pushing beyond what the science says, noting that he has asked DHS science officials to examine whether UV light can be used to “hit the body” or somehow used “inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way.”
“And I think you said you’re going to test that too?” he asked Bryan.
“We’ll get the right folks equipped,” Bryan responded noncommittally.
“I see the disinfectant knocks it out in a minute,” Trump continued, now entering magical thinking mode. “And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside, or, almost, a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs.”
Though he was more measured than Trump, Vice President Mike Pence also tried to spin a sunny scenario, based on several factors, that “could well give us a summer respite from the coronavirus.”
(Scientists, for the record, are still unsure of how the heat of summer will affect the coronavirus. Two weeks ago, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine published a report saying that while some laboratory data suggests that higher temperatures and humidity levels kill the virus faster, many other factors influence its transmission between humans in the “real world.“)
At one point, Trump mused to Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force, “I would like you to speak to the medical doctors to see if there’s any way that you can apply light and heat to cure.
Please fellow Nigerians, has anyone got a link to the Nigerian High Commission London, the website is down. This is getting irritating by the minute, with all the noise about re-branding the nation, common website to get information is not available. To maintain a website shouldn't cost more than £20,000 par month.
Can anyone provide the roles and responsibilities if any of the following job titles in government, it seems that these have been identified in all levels from federal to the local councils.
Special Advisers; Senior Special Assistants; Special Assistants; Personal Assistants;
It is my humble understanding that for a government to function efficiently and effectively, it must seek to reduce bureaucracy at all levels. This however is not happening in our country, hence the under-development that is rampant all over.
I personally think all these bogus jobs should be scrapped to limit the expenditure of government and in turn allow developmental projects to take effect in the country.
This is just blatant rigging in broad day light. I guess Mallam Buhari and other Northern politicians of various parties will be blind to witness all these. If their party did not win the election, then the Southern folks will take all the blame, hence the destruction of precious lives and properties.
In the South, rigging is done by politician thugs with guns.
What a free and fair election indeed.
We still have a very long way to go,
I think most of the International Observers are very well paid by the Federal Agents, so that they can all come out and say the elections has been free, fair and credible.
It is a pity that a lot of Nigerians in the UK do a lot of wrong and illegal things in the name of God. I was quite appalled when one pastor gave a testimony in a church on Old Kent road of how he has come to the UK possess the 'land' with illegal travel document. According to him he was driving without a driver's license and was caught by the MET, one thing led to the other and they found that he is an illegal immigrant and was going to be deported…, the long and short of his whole testimony is that God intervened and he escaped deportation but he never told us how. It is amazing how we justify breaking laws of the land by simply dropping the name of God and 'our faith'.
Judgement will really start in the House of God and we will all give accounts of our journeys thru the earth to our God. Nigerian christians should fear God because He is a consuming fire.
The above is quite true, reason why we have seen a huge explosion of churches in the UK. To anyone who knows South East London very well, right from the huge roundabout in Elephant and Castle by the Arcade, throught Old Kent Road, via Camberwell, Peckham, all the way to New Cross, you will see churches pastored by Nigerians, a number of them have over-stayed their visa extension. Hence they are using 'working in the ministry' has a cover-up and opportunity to get their indefinite right to remain in UK. May God help us.
In the Nigerian culture I grew up in 27 years old male or female is nothing, when it comes to beating. I think this has to do the family culture that is passed down the generations. A very close lady, almost 40years and married with 2kids was heavily scolded and nearly beaten by her dad who is a very influential Senator.
What a shame to the President, Ministers, and the PDP Party with their noise making about fighting corruption in high places. This just shows that we still have a very long way to go in trying to wash ourselves clean from the dirt and shame we portray to the whole world. Ours is a country where criminals go about their daily business of causing hardship on the general population. Still some stupid individuals will call Mr President's move as been diplomatic in nature, to me this is plain stupidity and a cause for mass election rigging in the SouthWest.
What we have to do in this election is to make sure our votes are counted and do everything possible that there is no rigging, let us do what was done in Kano State in 2007. We should be prepared to fight for our votes.
