Nigeria spent about $2.01bn on external debt servicing between January and April 2025, marking a 50 per cent increase compared to the $1.33bn recorded during the same period in 2024.
This is according to the latest international payments data published by the Central Bank of Nigeria on its website, which was obtained by The PUNCH on Wednesday.

The data showed that debt servicing alone accounted for 77.1 per cent of Nigeria’s total international payments within the four months, a sharp rise from the 64.5 per cent share recorded in the same period of 2024.

In total, the country’s international payments, comprising debt service, remittances, and letters of credit, stood at $2.60bn as of April 2025, up from $2.07bn recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.

The figures highlight the increasing burden of external debt on Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves, which reportedly fell by about $3bn during the review period.

An analysis of the monthly trend shows that Nigeria paid $540.67m in January 2025, slightly below the $560.52m recorded in January 2024. In February, the figure stood at $276.73m, almost unchanged from the $283.22m paid in February 2024.

However, in March, debt service spiked to $632.36m, more than double the $276.17m paid in the same month last year. The trend continued in April with another $557.79m disbursed, representing a 159 per cent increase from the $215.20m paid in April 2024.

Within just two months (March and April), Nigeria spent nearly $1.2bn on debt repayments alone, pointing to a heavy schedule of maturing loans during the period. The sharp rise in obligations suggests the settlement of large commercial or bilateral debts within those two months.

The PUNCH observed that the two-month period coincided with the clearance of an external debt obtained from the International Monetary Fund.

The IMF earlier confirmed that Nigeria has fully repaid the $3.4bn financial support it received under the Rapid Financing Instrument to cushion the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement sent to journalists on behalf of Mr Christian Ebeke, the IMF Resident Representative for Nigeria, the Fund said the repayment was completed on April 30, 2025. The loan, disbursed in April 2020, was aimed at helping Nigeria address a sharp fall in oil prices, economic contraction, and fiscal pressures caused by the pandemic.

“As of April 30, 2025, Nigeria has fully repaid the financial support of about $3.4bn it requested and received in April 2020 from the International Monetary Fund under the Rapid Financing Instrument to help alleviate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the sharp fall in oil prices,” the IMF stated.

German Consul General to Lagos, Mr Weert Borner, has cautioned leaders of West African countries against partnering with Russia for peace, security, and stability in their countries.

The German Consul stated this in his remarks at the International Conference on ECOWAS at 50 held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos on Tuesday.

He particularly warned Sahel countries relying on Russia for their defence, in Africa Corps, noting that the relationship was not driven by true interests and respect for their countries.

Rather, Borner said Russia was playing a “Power and Resource” game aimed at having the ability to influence and control the allocation and distribution of resources.


He argued that the lack of sincere interest in the development of African countries is epitomised by the fact that Russia had no concrete, impactful project in West Africa.

“Do not regard Russia under President Putin as a reliable partner on peace and stability in the region.

“From Russia’s direct neighbourhood to various parts of Africa, Putin’s Russia is playing a power and resource game without respect for the true interests of the respective country or region.

“The former Wagner mercenaries are now acting in several African countries, including parts of West Africa, as so-called Africa Corps, directly guided by the Russian Ministry of Defence in Moscow. I do not know of any concrete Russian project in West Africa that can have a positive impact on the well-being of West Africa’s nations and people,” Borner said.


The Consul General noted that the ECOWAS remained under high pressure following the exit of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, apart from the issues of terrorism, banditry and organised crime across the region.


As against Russia, he said the German Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the root causes of terrorism and instability in the ECOWAS countries can be seen in a budget of €500 million for various projects in the region.

He added that the German government supported the ECOWAS Commission in mediation and crisis prevention.

“We are offering training for peace-keeping units, both for military, police and civil personnel. We are co-financing and offering technical support for an ECOWAS partnership for cybersecurity.

“We are financing several programmes for enhancing stability and good governance in specifically fragile areas of the ECOWAS region,” he added.

Specifically, Borner said Germany is consulting and financing seven regional energy infrastructure projects within ECOWAS, contributing to improving medical laboratory infrastructure and family planning services in the region.


Resident Representative of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Nigeria, Marija Peran, called on ECOWAS to deepen regional integration, security, and economic governance over the next 50 years.

She lamented the persistent threats of political instability, terrorism, unconstitutional changes of government, insecurity, and transnational crime across the region.

“Economic asymmetry between nations threatens the principles of equitable growth. The elusive dream of a single currency remains hampered by structural hurdles. Political instability and unconstitutional changes of government continue to test the democratic fabric of ECOWAS. And perhaps most pressing, the scourge of insecurity—terrorism, insurgency, and transnational crimes—casts a long shadow over our collective progress.

“In this defining moment, let us invoke the spirit of the founding fathers—not merely in reverence but in renewed purpose. The next 50 years should be defined by deeper economic integration, reinforced political cohesion, and an unwavering commitment to security and prosperity for every West African citizen,” she said.

Director-General of the NIIA, Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, expressed hope that ECOWAS would overcome its current challenges within the next decade, noting that the body had built resilience over time.

He praised Gen. Yakubu Gowon and the late President Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo for setting up the ECOWAS as a reference point for regional integration.

Dignitaries at the event included former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon; ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi; Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; 2023 Social Democratic Party presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo; former Foreign Affairs Minister, Major Gen Ike Nwachukwu (retd); Mrs Erelu Dosumu-Abiola; Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr Abubakar Audi; Prof. Olawale Albert; and Prof Bola Akinterinwa.

By December 2025, the Federal Government has assured Nigerians that Section 3 of the East-West Road, which runs 15 kilometers from Eleme Junction to Onne Junction in Rivers State, will be finished and accessible to the public.

During a tour of the project site in Rivers State, the minister of works, Dave Umahi, gave the assurance.

In addition, he further stated that the awaited Eleme section will be operational within the next ten days.

After conducting a press tour of the area, Umahi spoke about the economic significance of the road corridor, particularly its ability to facilitate the movement of important oil and gas infrastructure to the Onne region.

The minister spoke with representatives of Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), the project’s contractors, while accompanied by Tarilade Enwereama, the controller of works for Rivers State.

Enwereama boldly claimed that the road’s restoration project will last between 50 and 100 years.

Enwereama noted that “we expect this road to serve Nigerians for many decades” because it is being built to the highest engineering standards.

Umahi once more confirmed that Section 3 will be completed on time, including those that have been designated for flyovers.

He affirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to completing high-impact infrastructure projects by estimating the total cost of the ongoing construction work at 156 billion.

We are determined to finish this because it is a national economic asset. Umahi predicted that the entire Onne stretch will be accessible in 10 days and the Eleme portion will be open by December.

Since the work has begun, the Minister has made his ninth appearance at the site. His frequent inspections and tangible improvements on the ground indicate that Nigeria’s South-South region is now putting more emphasis on infrastructure development.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has disclosed that state governments have received more funds from the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to implement projects in their respective states.

The governor also revealed that his strategic alignment with the government at the centre has paid off with more cash allocated to the state for more projects and human capital developments.

Governor Eno, who was inducted as the Patron of the state chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), also rallied support for the Tinubu- led federal government.

He urged the Institute to project Nigeria in good light as the ongoing socio-economic reforms were about yielding fruits.

The Governor spoke during the investiture ceremony of the institute’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Uyo, the state capital.

Governor Eno’s investiture, LEADERSHIP learnt was followed by the re-election of Dr. Ike Neliaku, as President and Chairman-In-Council, along with induction of the state’s Commissioner for Special Duties, Comrade Iniobong Ememobong and 15 others as council members.

Governor Eno promised to abide by the code of conduct governing the Institute and support its ideals.

He appealed to NIPR members to continue projecting Nigeria positively and declared his support for Tinubu’s administration, even as he urged Nigerians to patiently cooperate with the President as he works to change the nation’s fortunes.

Speaking about his administration’s achievements ahead of the May 29, 2025, two years in office, Governor Eno highlighted that numerous projects have been executed without borrowing from financial institutions.

He attributed the availability of funds to strategic and visionary decisions taken by President Tinubu, which have yielded increased revenues and more funds for developmental projects.

Eno also expressed his determination to make the state a tourist destination of choice in the country, citing the ongoing reconstruction of the abandoned 5,000-seater capacity International Conference Centre and a 200-room world-class hotel as indicators of his administration’s commitment to developing the state’s tourism sector.

For his part, re-elected NIPR President, Dr. Neliaku stated that the honour bestowed on Governor Eno was in acknowledgement of his role in promoting the organisation’s code, professional standards, and solemn commitment to creating a more reputation-conscious society.

Addressing the AGM, Neliaku highlighted his administration’s achievements over the past two years, listing them to include digital migration of membership applications, establishment of sectoral hubs, execution of Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with various organisations, and the annual Nigeria Spokespersons Summit.

President Bola Tinubu has granted regulatory approvals for the issuance of all critical licences required for the Kolmani Integrated Development Project, a multibillion-dollar oil exploration initiative located between Bauchi and Gombe States.

The development was disclosed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the permanent site of the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy in Alkaleri Local Government Area on Sunday.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, quoted Lokpobiri as saying the approvals were part of efforts to ramp up oil production by activating all available hydrocarbon platforms across the country.

He said, “The imperative to activate all available oil platforms for increased production led President Bola Tinubu to grant approvals for the issuance of all critical regulatory licences for the Kolmani Integrated Development Projects.”

Lokpobiri noted that the administration was committed to leveraging the full potential of Nigeria’s energy resources to drive industrial growth, create jobs and boost national revenue.

“Mr President is intentional about transforming our energy landscape into one that fuels industrial growth, creates jobs and enhances national revenue,” he stated.

Commending Bauchi State for aligning with the Federal Government’s energy goals, the minister said the establishment of the oil and gas academy demonstrated the state’s commitment to building local capacity for the sector.

“With this academy, Bauchi is making a strategic contribution to the development of the human capital needed to drive our sector forward,” he added.


The minister also highlighted the importance of developing local capacity to manage Nigeria’s abundant fossil fuel reserves, while commending the Petroleum Technology Development Fund for its role in manpower development.

“PTDF has played a critical role in ensuring that our sector is not just productive but also future-ready,” Lokpobiri noted, expressing optimism that the new institution would forge a strong partnership with the PTDF.


On his part, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, appreciated the Federal Government’s support and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the academy’s success.

“This institution will serve as a foundation for skill acquisition and innovation that will benefit not just Bauchi State but the entire nation,” the governor said.

The Kolmani Integrated Development Project, was first inaugurated in November 2022, marking the start of oil exploration in Northern Nigeria. It’s situated in the Kolmani River II oil field, a border community between Bauchi and Gombe States.

According to him, these projects will allow previously closed companies to reopen so they can continue operating and open new ones. [/b]“This will bring benefits to the region, which will lead to everyone benefiting because wealth will increase. Therefore, we must return and continue this project,” he said.[/b]

“We will continue with the oil drilling in Kolmani and other places. After the oil drilling, we will also ensure that we complete the gas pipeline from Ajaokuta to Kano,” Ojulari said.

The Federal Government has said that 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory, have reduced their debt profiles, having repaid about N1.85trn in domestic debt between June 2023 and December 2024.

This was contained in The Explainer magazine, a weekly publication of the National Orientation Agency, dated May 16th, 2025.

“Today, at least 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have reduced their domestic debt portfolios at an unprecedented rate. Thus, within a period of 18 months, spanning June, 2023 to December, 2024, these states have repaid a whooping total sum of N1.85 trillion to their creditors,” the publication read.

The NOA further disclosed that the 36 state governments and the FCT had accumulated a domestic debt stock of N1.66trn as of December 2014. By the end of 2015, their domestic debt profiles had risen to N2.5trn.

However, by June 30, 2023, the total domestic debt of the 36 states and the FCT had reached over N5trn,

“Thus, states such as Osun moved from a debt profile of N37.82 billion in 2014 to a whooping N145.71 billion in June, 2023 when President Tinubu assumed office. Delta, one of the highest receivers of FAAC allocations also moved from N211.95 billion debt in 2014 to N465.41 billion by 30 June, 2023.

“In the same vein, Jigawa sank from N1.57 billion debt in 2014 to N43.13 billion in June, 2023, while Imo went from N28.95 billion in 2014 to N220.84 billion in June, 2023. Anambra’s domestic debt surged from N2.88 billion in 2014 to N76.4 billion in June, 2023 and Sokoto moved from N7.65 billion only in 2014 to N91.68 billion in June 2023,” the publication further read.

The NOA explained that the Tinubu administration’s twin policies of ending petrol subsidy and floating the naira were “tremendous blessings to the states”, leading to a free up of revenues, with states witnessing a leap in federal allocations.

They added that while the states and Local Governments shared a total of N6.16 trillion in FAAC allocations in 2023, which was a 28.6 per cent increase from the N4.792 trillion they received in 2022, the allocations increased in 2024 to N9.58 trillion, N3.42 trillion higher than what they received in 2023, leading to the high debt repayment among the subnationals

The Agency also disclosed that of the 33 states, Delta, Lagos, Imo, Cross River and Ogun states top the list, with Delta repaying N265.83 billion, Lagos N96.23 billion, Imo N94.70 billion, Cross River N85.91 billion, and Ogun State N81.35 billion.

“However, there are only three states which failed to reduce their debt profiles. They are Niger, Enugu and Rivers States. Instead of following the footsteps of their colleagues, these states borrowed more. Thus, between June, 2023 and December, 2024, Niger State increased its debt burden by N18.79 billion. In the same vein, Enugu State borrowed additional N26.09 billion while Rivers State increased its debt by N138.89 billion within 18 months,” the NOA stated.

The Agency further stated that the Federal Government had expended more than $7 trillion (N11.2trn) in servicing its external debt within the first 18 months of the Tinubu administration, with the International Monetary Fund as the highest beneficiary of the FG’s debt repayment drive.

“As at June 30, 2023, a month after the president assumed office, Nigeria’s indebtedness to IMF stood at $3.264 billion. Six months after, specifically in December, 2023, Nigeria’s IMF debt had shrunk to $2.469 billion. One more year later (December, 2024), Nigeria has further reduced its indebtedness to IMF to only $800.23million. This $800.23 million balance at the end of 2024, has now been totally cleared in the second quarter of 2025 as confirmed by IMF. So, essentially in less than two years of Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria has paid off its entire $3.264 billion indebtedness to IMF.”

Among other debts repaid by the FG are the N22 trillion securitized Ways and Means arrears, the first N100 billion Sukuk bond offering issued in 2018, and N5.87 trillion in domestic debt paid off in 2024.

The Publication also noted that domestic debts had gulped the sum of N8.81 trillion in 18 months, while Nigeria’s total public debt stock “has dropped drastically from $113.42 billion as at June, 2023 to $94.22 billion as at December 31, 2024.”

Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has explained the reason behind President Bola Tinubu’s invitation to Rome by Pope Leo XIV.

DAILY POST reported that President Tinubu departed Abuja for Rome, the capital of Italy, on Saturday at the invitation of Pope Leo XIV.

Tinubu, who was accompanied by top Catholic leaders, is attending a solemn mass marking the beginning of the Pontificate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the 267th Bishop of Rome and the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Papal invitation sent by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Pope Leo XIV underscored the need for President Tinubu’s physical presence at the event.

DAILY POST reports that long before he became a household name in the Vatican, Robert Prevost, simply Fr. Prevost, and Prior General of the Augustinian Order from 2001 to 2013, visited Nigeria nine times.

When he left the post of Prior General, Provost maintained a connection with the west African country.

He was invited to Abuja in 2016 for the Mid-Chapter Assembly of the Nigerian Augustinians while he served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru.

Just before he became the Pope, Cardinal Robert Prevost was expected in Nigeria in July this year for the ordination of new priests in the Augustinian order.

And Bianca, who appeared on NTA Weekend File from Rome immediately after President Tinubu landed in Rome, said it was his connection to Nigeria that made Pope Leo XIV request the physical presence of the Nigerian leader.

Mrs Ojukwu, who pointed to the connection between Pope Leo XIV and Nigeria, also noted that Nigeria accounts for one of the fastest-growing Catholic populations in the world.

She noted that Pope Leo XIV is not a stranger to Nigeria with his deep knowledge of the streets and chapels in Abuja and Maiduguri.

Speaking on how the Papal invitation and the presence of Nigeria led by the President could build a good relationship between the west African nation and the Vatican, Mrs Ojukwu added,

“Of course, the new pontiff is the spiritual leader of over 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide. As he had already mentioned, we’re living in a world punctuated by so many tensions, so many conflicts, so much unrest.

“Nigeria’s Catholic community understand the importance and the stabilizing effect the pontiff will bring to the New World Order.

“We of course, appreciate the fact that he has considered Nigeria a very, very important country in Africa, being, of course, the most populous nation in in in in Africa.

“And with the President’s foreign policy thrust, with the President’s concentration on ensuring that one of the key elements policing peace across the African continent, and also ensuring that there is religious tolerance across the country.

“I think it’s particularly significant that being a Muslim, he accepted this invitation to join in the Pontifical mass tomorrow.

“It says a lot about his approach to ensuring that he’s a president for all Nigerians, irrespective of creed, or religious affiliations.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a message to Malian leader General Assimi Goita, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting Mali’s democratic transition and deepening economic ties between the two nations, declaring that West African countries are stronger when united.

The President spoke on Thursday in Abuja while receiving the Letter of Credence from the Ambassador of the Republic of Mali, Cheick Oumar Coulibaly.

“We should strengthen our bilateral relations, and it is hoped that Mali will achieve its democratic goals. We are open to any support we can render. I want you to see yourself as a member of the family here.

“For me, we are one in West Africa and Africa. The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has made its position clear, but no nation can succeed alone. We see Mali as a brother and are ready to collaborate and exchange ideas.

“I can assure you that Nigeria is home for you. When you feel like seeing us, our doors will always be open,” the President said.

The Ambassador of Mali thanked the President for consistently providing leadership for the sub-region and the continent.

“I wish to convey the fraternal greetings of the Head of State, Gen. Assimi Goïta, and the highest appreciation of the Malian people for the Nigerian leadership and support,” he said.

Coulibaly said Nigeria had maintained its leadership role in Africa while acknowledging the Nigerian military’s supply of troops for various UN peace missions on the continent and the subregion.

“The Head of State particularly told me that I was on a mission to the biggest country in Africa. He said he knows it’s not easy, but I should look for solutions as a diplomat. We know that Africans must solve African problems.

He noted, “I appreciate you as a leader and father in Africa. ”

President Tinubu also received letters of credence from five other envoys, urging closer cooperation to promote global peace, understanding, and prosperity.

Among them were Ambassador Bengt Van Loosdrecht of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; High Commissioner Selestine Gervas Kakele of the United Republic of Tanzania; non-resident Ambassador Dr Sabit Subasic of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Ambassador Andrey Leonidovich Podelyshev of the Russian Federation; and Ambassador Patrick Egloff of Switzerland.

Welcoming the Tanzanian envoy, the President praised the country’s leader, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, for her courageous leadership and impactful contributions to the African Union.

“We will continue to work together. You can see the situation across the world. No one can do it alone. We will continue to collaborate in areas of knowledge and technical know-how,” he said.

The Tanzanian High Commissioner acknowledged the significant impact of Nigerian investments in Tanzania, citing contributions from the Dangote Group, UBA, GTB, and Sahara Energy.
“We should strengthen collaboration not only government to government but also people to people as we see in the film industry and sports. Nigeria has a vibrant and wonderful film industry, and it is collaborating with Tanzania,’ the Ambassador stated.

In his meeting with the Russian ambassador, President Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing technical partnership with Russia and expressed a desire to expand cooperation in steel production, science, education, and nuclear energy to bolster electricity supply.

“Our partnership has been fulfilling, but we need more technological support with our rapidly growing population. The Ajaokuta Steel Complex, constructed by Russian companies, will only realise its potential when fully operational,” President Tinubu stated.

Ambassador Podelyshev reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to expand cooperation, particularly in education and energy, emphasising ongoing agreements on nuclear power.

Addressing the Swiss ambassador, President Tinubu pledged to create a more investor-friendly environment through regulatory reforms, especially concerning potential litigation.

“We will address any legal issues that could impede progress in our economic relations,” he assured.

Ambassador Egloff highlighted growing Swiss investments in Nigeria, noting expansions by companies such as Nestlé and Lafarge in Lagos, Kano, and Gombe States, and praised ongoing collaboration on security and intelligence.

Controversial Delta State College of Nursing student, Osato Edobor, who recently stirred nationwide attention over a viral TikTok song referencing First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reportedly failed her final year examinations, raising fresh concerns about possible academic retaliation or personal stress fallout.

Edobor’s academic status became public shortly after internal results from the Delta State College of Nursing, Agbor, were released this week. The student nurse, who had been issued a query in March 2025 for her involvement in the social media trend that used the now-viral audio clip “Na Your Mama Be This?”, was allegedly placed under disciplinary scrutiny following backlash from political quarters.

According to internal sources within the college, Osato’s results showed significant shortcomings across multiple clinical and theoretical courses, failing to meet the minimum passing requirement in key assessments.

Although school authorities have not publicly linked her performance to her viral controversy, critics and student bodies are questioning whether institutional bias played a role.

The nursing student had earlier accused the college of intimidation after receiving a disciplinary memo that cited her “disrespect” to the office of the First Lady.
