Politics › Tinubu Sets To Appoint Himself As Petroleum Minister by Prestar(op): 2:55pm On Aug 17, 2023 |
Tinubu sets to appoint himself as petroleum minister, drops El-Rufai from cabinet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu might likely assign the Petroleum Ministry portfolio to himself as he dropped former Kaduna state governor, Mal. Nasiru El-Rufai from his cabinet.
On Wednesday evening, Tinubu through a statement signed by Willie Bassey, the Director, Information in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, announced the portfolios of the 45 ministerial nominees confirmed by the senate.
Former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike emerged as Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Festus Keyamo as head of the Aviation Ministry, while Dele Alake will man the Solid Minerals Development Ministry.
Other ministers are Wale Edun (Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy), Adegboyega Oyetola (Transportation), David Umahi (Works), Festus Keyamo (Aviation and Aerospace Development), and Betta Edu (Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation).
The President reserved the Minister of Environment and Ecological Management, for Kaduna State. Recall that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and two other ministerial nominees were screened by the Senate but were not confirmed.
A replacement is expected from Kaduna State following the withdrawal of the ex-governor.
A close look at the list showed that the Ministry for petroleum resources had no substantive minister.
President Tinubu did not assign anyone to head the ministry of petroleum resources, he did appoint Heineken Lokpobiri, a legal practitioner and politician, to be the minister of state for petroleum resources.
Just like Muhammadu Buhari before him, the president seems to want to lead the ministry himself. Recall, during his first term, Buhari chose to be the minister of petroleum resources alongside naming other ministers, and he kept this role in his second term too.
It is important to note that Nigeria is having a hard time reaching its goal of 1.69 million barrels per day as stated in the 2023 budget. This target is crucial for obtaining the necessary oil revenues the country requires.
In July 2023, the country managed to produce only around 1.29 million barrels per day, including condensates. If we exclude condensate production, the country’s output was 1.08 million barrels per day.
Note also that from 2024, the country will be required to adopt the 1.38 million barrels per day quota, newly assigned by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Although 2022 was a year that saw a massive drop in crude production, the war is not over, as Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), security agencies and third-party contractors like the Tompolo-led Tantita Security, are still struggling with crude oil theft, which hampers crude oil and gas production and creates a revenue problem for operators.
Nigeria’s oil sector has not seen a huge influx of investments in years as investors are looking to new producers in Africa, while legacy producers like Nigeria are largely ignored. Meanwhile, a massive deal like the Mobil-Producing and Seplat asset sale which could increase the country’s oil and gas production is left unapproved.
Operators in the industry have noted in the past that there have been cases of regulatory mismatches between the Nigerian Midstream Downstream Petroleum Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
To tackle these issues, the country needs a capable and knowledgeable person with an awareness of the industry’s challenges and the focus/drive to fix them under the Ministry of petroleum resources.
To his credit, President Tinubu has made moves to ensure that there’s a clear regulatory framework regarding operations in the industry. He has also taken action steps to sell off some assets in the NNPCL to the private sector, to increase productivity and revenue through transparency and efficiency.
Soon, Nigerians will find out if he is indeed the best man for the job of petroleum minister. SOURCE: https:///tinubu-sets-to-appoint-himself-as-petroleum-minister-drops-el-rufai-from-cabinet/

Politics › Oyo Governor Makinde Wants Single 6-year Tenure For Nigerian Politicians by Prestar(op): 10:17pm On Aug 16, 2023 |
Oyo governor Makinde wants single 6-year tenure for Nigerian politicians after winning second term Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has advocated for a single term of five or six years for politicians in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
This came after four months after being reelection as the governor of Oyo state.
According to the statement, Makinde stated this at a dinner in honour of the National Executive of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), to flag off their retreat in Ibadan.
The governor said this would allow such political office holders enough time to do everything they have in mind within a single term instead of thinking about a second term.
“I am a supporter of a single-term structure. As a matter of fact, I didn’t want a second term and I told the fathers of faith that four years may not be long enough to do everything that you want to do, but it’s long enough to make your own impact and go your own way.
“But maybe, if we have the opportunity to discuss this, I think a five- or six-year single term will really be enough for most of us to do whatever it is that we are supposed to do,” the governor added.
Makinde further called on Nigerians to pray for those in positions of authority, stating that political campaigns are over and that it is now time for governance.
According to him, governance is about the interest and wellness of the country, political parties would come and go but the country would remain, hence the need for Nigerians to pray and work with those in positions of authority.
The governor, who described the theme of the retreat, “Going from Strength to Strength”, as indicative of where Nigeria should be as a nation, urged all Nigerians to join hands to rebuild the nation, while calling on Christians to pray for the restoration of Nigeria’s glory so that it could go from strength to strength.
He said: “I listened to the National President of the PFN, Bishop Wale Oke, on the theme chosen for this serious event, ‘Going from Strength to Strength’. Well, I think this is really apt, because that is where we are supposed to be as a nation.
“We must think about rebuilding our nation and the role the body of Christ has to play in that process. The Bible asks Christians to pray for their leaders. As Christians, we should carry out the work that God has assigned to us effectively.” SOURCE: https:///oyo-governor-makinde-wants-single-6-year-tenure-for-nigerian-politicians-after-winning-second-term/

Crime › Grandfather Allegedly Sells Grandchild For N700,000 Day After Birth by Prestar(op): 8:25am On Aug 13, 2023 |
Men of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested an elderly man identified as Monday Chukwuka for allegedly selling his one-day-old grandchild for N700,000.
The State Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, in a statement on Saturday, said the grandfather was arrested at his hideout in the Ibafo area of Ogun State following credible intelligence.
According to Osifeso, the suspect, who is the biological father of a young girl who gave birth to the child that was sold, had confessed to his crime.
Chukwuka was said to have taken the baby from his daughter after she had delivered the child, under the pretense of handing the child over to someone who would look after her.
The Police revealed that a bundle of new birth certificates and some equipment being used for baby deliveries were recovered from the factory, adding that the suspects, as of the time of arrest, were unable to give any satisfactory explanation about the parentage of the babies recovered from the factory.
The senior citizen also reported confessed that he sold the baby because he could not afford to take care of his teenage daughter and the child, so he used the proceeds to rent a shop and buy goods.
Another suspect, Favour Chukwuka, who bought the baby from the grandfather, claimed another couple currently at large gave her the job to look for a baby because of their childlessness, pocketed N50,000 and handed over N650,000 to him (Monday).
The statement read in part: “Osifeso said: “On July 10, 2023, an actionable intelligence report was received by a team of Police operatives attached to the Command Monitoring, Oyo State, about the ‘harvesting of a day-old baby girl’ from her teenage mother, identified as Sarah Chukwuka, in Oyo town and the sale of the girl-child to a criminal cartel that operates a baby factory in Abia State.
“The suspect further explained in detail how he moved the day-old baby to Abia State, where he sold her to the owner of a baby factory located at Obehi, Okwa West, in Abia State for N700,000.
“Investigation was extended to Abia State, and in the process of a coordinated raid on the baby factory, a female suspect identified as Popoola Bunmi and four other accomplices, whose names are Chinwedu Peter, Chidinma Blessing, Chuckwu Christopher, and Favour Chukwu, were all apprehended in connection with the criminal activity.” SOURCE: https:///grandfather-allegedly-sells-grandchild-for-n700000-day-after-birth/

Politics › Nigerian Military Confirms Getting Requests To Overthrow President Bola Tinubu by Prestar(op): 6:55pm On Aug 12, 2023 |
BREAKING: Nigerian Military Confirms Getting Requests To Overthrow President Bola Tinubu In Niger Republic where the military recently removed the country’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed receiving requests from unnamed persons to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The DHQ suggests that proponents of the coup d’état are basing the calls on alleged poor welfare within the Forces.
The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, confirmed this in a statement released via the DHQ’s official Twitter account @DefenceInfoNG.
he military frowned on the call for military intervention in the nation’s democracy, labelling such as ‘unpatriotic’ and ‘wicked’, and an attempt to divert the focus of the Armed Forces from their constitutional duties.
While acknowledging the significance of ensuring the welfare of its personnel, the leadership of the DHQ said it remains resolute in safeguarding the principles of democracy in Nigeria.
“We detest any attempt by any individual or group to instigate the law abiding Armed Forces of Nigeria to embark on any unconstitutional change of government in our country. We wish to state unequivocally that the military is happy and better under democracy and Will not get involved in any act to sabotage the hard-earned democracy in our country.
“The AFN under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa is determined to ensure complete subordination of the Armed Forces to constitutional authority under His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and will not be distracted from its roles that are well defined in the 1999 constitution (as amended),” said Gusau.
On July 26, 2023, a group of soldiers led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani overthrew the government of President Mohamed Bazoum in a military coup.
Tchiani subsequently declared himself the head of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, while placing his former boss and country’s democratically elected president under house arrest.
Gen Tchiani has so far refused to compromise with any of the suggestions made to him, including appeals by the Tinubu-led ECOWAS to restore democratic rule in the country.
He has kept most international envoys at bay but met with Nigeria’s former central bank governor and former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, on Wednesday, among others. SOURCE: https:///breaking-nigerian-military-confirms-getting-requests-to-overthrow-president-bola-tinubu/
