The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has said it is still on strike.

According to the labour union, its organs will meet to decide on the outcome of the meeting with the Federal Government.

Posting on X on Tuesday, NLC wrote: “Until we hear from Our Organs at our Meeting scheduled for today, 4th June, we are still on strike.”

On Monday, the Federal Government and the organised labour reached an agreement that might end the ongoing strike.

The organized labour embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday to push for an improved pay package for workers.

The strike led to a meeting between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume and labour leaders in Abuja.

At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that “Further to the negotiation by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW) and subsequent withdrawal of Labour from negotiation, the Leadership of the National Assembly intervened on 2nd June, 2024. The Organised Labour declared nationwide strike on Monday, 3rd June, 2024 to drive home its demands.

“The Federal Government, in the National interest, convened a meeting with Labour held in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Monday 3rd June, with a view to ending the strike action.

“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000.”

Some unions have shut their workplaces to comply with the directive of the two labour unions to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.

On Friday, the organised labour announced that they will be commencing a nationwide indefinite strike due to the refusal of the Federal Government to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

According to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, the strike will begin at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

In a joint statement delivered by Ajaero and his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Festus Osifo, they expressed their serious concerns and disappointment over the Federal Government’s failure to finalise and pass a new National Minimum Wage Act into law.

They also demanded that the government reverse the increase in electricity tariff to N65/kWh.

Recall that both unions had given an ultimatum of May 31, 2024, for negotiations on the new minimum wage.

However, talks between organised labour and the Federal Government broke down on Tuesday after both parties presented their offers.

The government increased its initial offer of N57,000 by adding N3,000 to make it N60,000. ,

This proposal was rejected by labour during the meeting.

During negotiations at this meeting, labour also lowered their demand from last week’s proposal of N497,000 by removing N3,00 which reduced their new proposal to N494,000.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities in a statement addressed to the branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of ASUU on Monday, the association’s President, Emmanuel Osodeke, directed lecturers in universities across the country to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress.

The statement read, “The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, 3rd June 2024, as a result of the failure of Government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff.

On Sunday, Aviation unions directed its members to withdraw services across airports in Nigeria.

The unions include the National Union of Air Transport Employees, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers.

The union stated, “In compliance with the directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria—we hereby inform the general public, aviation service providers, airline operators, aviation businesses, and all aviation workers nationwide that starting from 0000hrs of June 3, 2024, all services at all Nigerian airports shall be fully withdrawn till further notice.”

The PUNCH learnt that the unions decided after an emergency meeting held on Sunday.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has instructed its members to join the ongoing strike led by the organized labour.

The NLC and TUC commenced a nationwide industrial action on Monday in protest against the N60,000 minimum wage proposal of the Federal Government.

ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, issued a statement on Monday, instructing branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of ASUU to mobilize lecturers nationwide to participate in the strike as an affiliate of the congress.

The statement read, “The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, 3rd June, 2024, as a result of the failure of Government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff.

“Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress.

“Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilise all members to participate in the strike action. Yours in the struggle.”

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in Lagos, was shut down on Monday, June 3, by members of the Labour Union, enforcing the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Organized Labour.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC commenced a nationwide industrial action on Monday in protest against the N60,000 minimum wage proposal of the Federal Government.

In the photos which emerged online, members of the labour union were captured with canes chasing FIRS staff out of the Agidingbi, Ikeja, office.

The Edo State Police Command has apprehended a 19-year-old named Godstime Abhulime on suspicion of kidnapping a four-year-old pupil and collecting a ransom of N300,000.

Daily Post reports that the State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect kidnapped the minor, a primary school pupil at Emaudo in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Adegboye said the suspect would soon be arraigned in court.

It was gathered that the suspect, who related to the victim, lured the minor out of the house and whisked her away on a motorcycle to an unknown destination.

An anonymous source close to the family, who spoke to newsmen, explained that the suspect and his accomplices kept the minor in captivity for two days before reaching out to her parents for ransom negotiation.

The source said one of the suspect’s accomplices, Destiny, popularly known as ‘Paulo’, who reached out to the victim’s family members, demanded for N7 million ransom.

He added that the family of the victim, however, reported the incident at the Ekpoma divisional police office who went on the trail of the suspect.

According to him, after much negotiations and out of fear that the kidnappers may harm the victim, the family paid N300,000 for the release of the girl.

“One of the suspects, Godstime who is relation of the victim was later arrested and confessed to the police they kidnapped the baby in order to get money to bail themselves from some cult members who threatened to kill them,” the source said.

The Nigerian Government has expressed concern that the proposed N494,000 new minimum wage by organized labor could potentially cripple Nigeria's economy.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja while reacting to organized labour demand and indefinite strike action.

The minister lamented that the N494,000 minimum wage demand would amount to a N9.5 trillion expenditure burden to the government.

According to him, they had agreed to increase the country’s minimum wage by 100 percent to N60,000 from N30,000 in line with the current economic realities.

He frowned at the 1,547 percent new minimum wage proposal by the organized labour.

He noted labour’s N494,000 minimum wage demand will make the federal government downside its 1.2 million workforce which does not portend any good for the country’s economy.

“The sum of N494,000 national minimum wage which Labour is seeking would cumulatively amount to the sum N9.5 trillion bill to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“Nigerians need to understand that whereas the FG is desirous of ample remuneration for Nigerian workers, what is most critical is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not encourage any action that could lead to massive job loss, especially in the private sector, who may not be able to pay the wage demanded by the Organised Labour,” he said.

Recall that the organized labour is billed to embark on indefinite strike on Monday, June 3, over the government’s failure to implement a new minimum wage and reversal of the April 3 electricity tariff hike.

Ahmed Aliyu Jalam, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has died in a car accident.

He died while traveling to his hometown in Jalam, Dambam Local Government Area of the state.

Daily Post reports that the Commissioner died in the fatal car accident alongside his driver on Saturday.

The State Governor, Bala Mohammed confirmed the tragic death of Jalam in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.

The statement reads, “It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the sudden death of the Honorable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bauchi State, Hon. Ahmed Aliyu Jalam (Maikankana), who died as a result of a ghastly motor accident on Saturday, 1st June 2024.

“His demise is deeply felt by His Excellency, Governor Bala Mohammed, his cabinet colleagues, friends, family, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched during his lifetime.

“On behalf of his family, the government, and the people of Bauchi State, Governor Bala Mohammed extended his deepest condolences to the members of Jalam’s immediate family and the entire state. He prayed that the Almighty Allah forgives Jalam’s shortcomings and grants him Aljanna Firdaus.”

Daily Post reports that Ahmed Aliyu Jalam died at the age of 60 and is survived by his wives and many children.

He served as Commissioner for Religious Affairs in 2019 and was reappointed as a commissioner in 2023 where he served under the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs until his tragic death.

Hon. Jalam, fondly called Maikankana, also served as a councilor in 1999, caretaker chairman in 2007 and executive chairman in 2008.

The deceased will be buried today, Sunday, June 2, 2024, in his hometown, Jalam, Dambam LGA of Bauchi State, at 11:00 am.

A First Bank employee identified as Tijani Muiz Adeyinka is now on the run after diverting N40 billion at the bank’s head office team in Iganmu, Lagos.

He allegedly diverted those funds to 98 bank accounts classified as first beneficiaries, including his wife’s.

The bank, with a market capitalization of ₦829 billion, reported the incident to the Nigerian Police Force on March 25, 2024, and obtained multiple court orders to freeze accounts connected to the stolen funds.

As reported by Tech Cabal, Tijani Muiz Adeyinka, the employee implicated in the scandal, held a managerial position in the electronic products team at First Bank’s headquarters in Iganmu, Lagos. Adeyinka, now a fugitive, allegedly diverted approximately ₦40 billion (around $29 million) over two years.

He purportedly exploited his role to misappropriate funds by directing customer reversal requests to a merchant account under his control. His ability to finalize transactions without additional approvals allowed the scheme to go unnoticed.

The fraud came to light following a customer complaint, prompting an internal review by the bank’s control unit, which uncovered numerous suspicious transactions. In response, First Bank alerted the police and pursued legal measures to mitigate the financial loss.

First Bank took proactive steps by obtaining three court orders between April 4 and April 8, 2024, to freeze hundreds of accounts suspected of receiving the diverted funds. Among the affected accounts were 98 classified as first beneficiaries, including one belonging to Adeyinka’s wife, as well as numerous second-tier accounts.

Court documents revealed that Adeyinka routed funds to his wife’s account at Zenith Bank, which then dispersed the money across 34 additional accounts. These accounts subsequently channeled the funds to 1,190 other accounts, creating a complex network of transactions to obscure the origin of the stolen funds.

In a statement to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police dated May 10, 2024, the bank affirmed its collaboration with law enforcement agencies to uncover the circumstances surrounding the fraud and apprehend all individuals involved.

“We hereby bring to your notice the discovery of fraudulent transactions into various transactions within and outside the bank and request your good offices to set up the machinery of investigation in place with a view to unravel the circumstances surrounding the said fraud and get the culprits apprehending to face the wrath of the law,” read a letter dated May 10, 2024, from First bank to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.

Fraud remains a big issue in Nigeria’s financial services industry. While fintech startups receive disproportionate scrutiny, the country’s biggest banks are often on the receiving end of fraud attacks too. In 2023, Access Bank lost ₦6.15 billion to fraud and Fidelity Bank lost ₦2.5 billion in three incidents.
