NB: I'm a married woman thanks |
It is well ...ma take heart |
's not easy having a kind heart in a cruel world, not everyone will have the heart you have and not every one will appreciate you and what you do for them. So be prepared to face a lot of disappointment and betrayal along the way..... My only hope is that KARMA exists ...I have been a victim of karma and it always has a way of making me behave right.... Why this intro you make ask, because 25 percent of illnesses are caused by emotional distress...I have customer who comes every week to buy Lexotan...... though he comes with prescriptions I wasn't comfortable with his frequent intake....i had to ask him a question or two and he opened up to me that his wife left him with his kids....hmm....we spent hours talking...he laid the cards on the table....he told me how he trained the woman in school....he was her first....how he got her a job , established her only to find out that she was cheating with another man....despite that, he forgave her and they tried to make their marriage work....according to him he isn't innocent in the acts of adultery anyway this things happens. I appreciated the facts that he was truthful and sincere about his contribution to the breakdown of the marriage.... I tried speaking to his wife the next day she's also my patients, called her up she sounded so unruly on the phone....hmmmm this man must have done something wrong...i don't think it's normal for a typical African woman to pack her bags and her children and leave her matrimonial home...there's something Mr Chinedu (Not real name isn't saying). I called him up and counseled him on the need to move on at least for now so as not to harm himself as his health is fast deteriorating.....I know there are a lot of people out there going through one form of emotional problems or the other.... which is currently affecting their health and state of mind....no drug or medicine can help solve the problem....the only thing is to really love yourself...if you have being good count your blessings and move on....its their loss not yours...when we start loving ourselves, everything in our life works...we come from a place of love , positivity and gratitude we can live a much more abundant and vibrant lives. Every thought we think is creating our future and ultimately affecting our health. The importance of our emotions can not be underestimated. When we have a deeper understanding of how they affect us, we can use them to help in our healing and creating a better life for ourselves. In addition, no treatise on the subject of the emotions would be complete with out understanding the power of our minds in affecting our emotional reality. For so long emotions have been something to be kept under control and a perception of weakness has often been associated with an emotional display. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The suppression of our emotions is one of the fastest ways of setting up an energetic disturbance in our bodies. Emotion = energy in motion, and when an energetic disturbance or blockage occurs within, we are then at risk of creating dis-ease, cellular damage, etc. Disease can be healed if we are willing to change the way we think and believe and act! Incredible examples of healing have been attributed to the healing power of the emotions. A prime example is American author, Brandon Bays who shares her amazing story in her book” The Journey”.She tells of how she completely cured herself of a football sized tumor, by exploring the layers of emotion associated with the tumor and completely resolving all issues around them. The book shows the role our emotions have in creating the reality we experience and an effective way of changing that reality. Emotions are now recognized as having a sound scientific basis. Dr Candace Pert in her book, Molecules of Emotion states, “For me the key concept is that the emotions exist in the body as informational chemicals, the neuropeptides and receptors, and they also exist in another realm, the one we experience as feeling, inspiration, love-beyond the physical. The emotions move back and forth, flowing freely between both places, and in that sense, they connect the physical and nonphysical. We know that the way health occurs in the physical body has to do with the flow of the biochemicals of emotion. “My work has taught me that there is a physical reality to the emotions.”

Out of every 20 patients I consult in the pharmacy at least 2 patient complains of internal heat mostly from the stomach region...i usually prescribe antacids as I always suspect ulcer or gastric reflux and advise they stay hydrated that is, drink enough water...but recently this complaint is on the increase even amongst elderly patients and patients without any history of gastric problems ......i did my usual research and came up with some facts and home remedies on how the challenges of internal heat in the body can solved and this includes the causes, symptoms and treatment of internal heat. Internal Heat is a situation in which a person feel heat sensations all over the body or in some specific areas of the body. Sometimes, the heat starts from the stomach, the chest, the throat or the waist region and radiates all through the body. In fact some people feels very hot from inside (high core temperature) but would have a normal temperature outside the body (skin temperature) Moreover, some will feel intense internal body heat and will start sweating profusely while others will only feel hot within without sweating. Internal heat occurs irrespective of the environmental or atmospheric conditions and may sometime come with headache, tiredness and rapid heartbeat. No matter the form it shows up, Internal heat in the body makes the sufferer very uncomfortable. Causes Of Internal Heat In The Body. As a matter of fact, Internal heat is not a disease. Rather, it come as symptoms or signs that your body put in place so as to inform you that something may not be right or to warn you of an impending danger within your body Therefore, when the underlying cause is treated, the internal heat vanishes easily. There are several factors that can cause internal body heat. This factors ranges from minor to major. Here are some of them Dehydration Hot atmospheric conditions that prevent proper core body temperature regulation through sweating. Improper clothing Strenuous physical activities or exercise Certain drugs and stimulants such as cocaine etc Excessive worry and Emotional problems. Illness and medical conditions such as malaria, infections, stomach ulcer, high blood pressure, insomnia, seizures, muscular agitations, neurological disorders, rare tumors and lots more. It is of utmost importance that you study your body well so as to know your exact actions that triggers the internal heat. Knowing these triggers will help you to avoid them as much as possible. Based on our survey, Here are some common triggers Hot and Spicy foods Oil and fried foods Foods rich in sodium Caffeine and Alcohol Cigarette smoke INTERNAL HEAT SYMPTOMS Vomiting Headache Confusion or Agitation Muscle weakness Not sweating in the heat Seizures Fast Pulse or rapid breathing Fainting and loss of appetite INTERNAL HEAT PREVENTION Stay hydrated!!! Staying hydrated prevents you from losing to much liquid in your body by sweating. Wearing loose clothing: As much as you want to wear as little clothing as possible, wearing loose, billowy clothing is actually much better for keeping you cool because of how little it actually touches your body, While also protecting you from the sun's harmful rays. Wear Sunscreen!!! This should go without saying, but sunscreen should be applied regularly and only contain SPF 30 or higher Try to avoid being outside less exposure to the sun means less risk Try not to drink very much alcohol or coffee. Both of these drinks are dehydrating, and being dehydrated is one of your main defenses against internal heat. Avoid heavy exercise Invest in a fan. Eat foods with heavy water concentrations, such as watermelons, cucumbers. INTERNAL HEAT FIRST AID Keep them as cool as possible. Move them to an air-conditioned area, if you can or at least from direct sunlight as far as you can. Put them in an ice bath, But only if they get internal heat from exercising. It's dangerous to put children or adults in an ice bath especially if it wasn't sustained while exercising. Put ice packs in sensitive places close to blood vessels. Ice packs are best around the neck, armpits, groin, back and inner knees . You can buy a pack of 24 Disposable ice packs and keep them in your first aid kits in case of an emergency. Have them drink lots of water. Check their body temperature regularly. Make sure they're lying down, with their feet slightly propped up. Risk for Internal Heat Includes People with: Diabetes Alcoholism High blood pressure Physically exhausting jobs such as gardening Recreational drug usage Mental illnesses Certain medicines including antihistamines, diuretic, antipsychotic and heart medicine. HOT FLASH ALSO CALLED HOT FLUSHES: A hot flash is experienced as a feeling of warmth or intense heat spreading over the body. It may be accompanied by red, flushed face, perspiration and rapid heartbeat.Just like internal heat, A hot flash is a symptom and not a medical condition. Hot flashes are often very brief ranging from about 30 seconds to a few minutes. On the average, a hot flash lasts between two and thirty minutes. CAUSES OF HOT FLASH: Although the major cause of hot flash has not yet been determined. This is probably due to the fact that majority of research on hot flashes are focused on the remedy. Nevertheless, there is a general knowledge that hot flashes occur as a result of declining level of the reproductive hormone either in a man or in a woman. But the exact way in which this reduction in hormone level affects thermoregulation in the body is not fully understood. Generally, Hot flashes are characteristic symptoms of perimenopause (around menopause) and menopause. This is primarily because there is a notable reduction in the level of female reproductive hormone (estrogen) around this time. However, several other factors and medical conditions as listed above can also cause hot flashes. NATURAL TIPS TO COMBAT HOT FLASHES: Avoid the triggers Eat healthy: Since it is generally accepted that the major cause of hot flashes is reduction in the reproductive hormone level. Hence taking foods that will increase the hormone level will adequately combat the hot flash. Examples of food items rich in estrogen/phytoestrogen are : Black cohosh, Flaxseed oil, Red clover, wild yam etc Take vitamins especially Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Stay Hydrated. Wear the right type of clothing Breathe slowly and deeply Stay in a cool environment especially at night Click the link on my bio for more health tips and juicy gist

O clap your hands all ye people , clap your hands all ye people... I was going through some health forums and blogs, scouting for health topic to blog about and i saw an interesting article about clapping as a form of exercise which i'm about to share. Now, this article is specially for those who feel reluctuant when asked to give a round of applause during any events or celebration ...you are actually doing a whole lot of good to your health... We all think of clapping as a way to applaud somebody for a job well done in sports, award shows, theater or movies. However, there are a number of hidden benefits that clapping has been proven to have. In the recent years, there are different types of groups in parks who get together in the morning and/or evening. Some of these groups indulge in laughing, there is also another group who gather around to clap. Our body is a bundle of nerves and blood vessels spread all through the body and is one of the most complex networks we will ever know. Each organ is linked to the other and a bad effect on one organ can put the other in danger. The palms, basically, contain nerve and blood vessel endings and stimulating them through clapping helps improve the health of organs like kidney, digestive tract, and lower back. Sounds surprising? Well, there are about 30+ acupressure points in the palms, which are activated when you are clapping. These connect various organs including low back, neck, kidneys, lungs, stomach, etc. and have indirect benefits as noted below. 1. Clapping improves the overall heart health and maintains the blood pressure level. Blood circulation to various organs is also improved by regular clapping. Clapping also helps improve asthma-related problems by promoting the function of nerve endings that connect these organs. 2. Reduced occurrence of infections. Clapping helps immunity by boosting white cells, which are essential for fighting germs and therefore reduces the occurrence of frequent infections. 3. Regular clapping is also shown to have benefits on improved bone health in cases of arthritis and associated pains for the back. Be it middle or low back pains, there is an immense benefit from clapping. The severity of the pain can be reduced significantly. 4. Strange as it may seem, clapping is also shown to reduce instances of insomnia and improve hair health. 5. For mental illnesses like depression and anxiety, clapping can be very easy to do exercise that costs actually nothing. If you think the kidneys and palms are very distant from each other, think again. 6. For gout, which affects the kidneys, clapping is shown to be immensely useful. Both the severity of gout and the progression of the disease can be halted. A word of caution: For better results, clapping is to be done after applying an oil like mustard oil or coconut oil. So next time, your clapping shouldn't be a part of just applauding. Include it in your routine exercise and see the results ... Scientific Basis for the Benefits of Hand Clapping. There have been very few scientific studies related to hand clapping. These benefits have been reported anecdotally for the most part. Only two rigorous studies have been conducted. One of these is from the Ben-Grunion University of the Negev in Israel. The possible link between hand clapping and the development of essential skills in children was investigated. Children in first, second, and third grades in several elementary schools engaged in songs involving hand clapping. One result was that children who participated in this type of singing developed skills that children who didn’t participate did not develop. Another result showed that children who spontaneously engaged in hand clapping during recess had neater handwriting, wrote better, and had fewer spelling errors. Because this kind of exercise seems to train the brain and influence development, those children didn’t get the hand clapping exercises were possibly at greater risk of developing learning difficulties. Teachers also reported those children who participated to be better socialized overall. The children appeared to benefit from the hand clapping and singing primarily in three grades. The ages for these grades were roughly seven to ten. This appears to indicate a developmental process is occurring during these years that has effects on emotional, sociological, physiological, and cognitive development. There also appeared to be a benefit for adults in this study. The researcher engaged university students in the same kind of hand clapping exercise. These students reported being more focused and less tense after the exercise. Another study involving functional MRI imaging investigated cortical activation and hand clapping. Results of this study showed clapping to bring on more cortical activation in the primary sensorimotor cortex and the supplementary motor cortex than grasp-release movements and sequential finger opposition. These results indicate hand clapping to be an effective mechanism for stimulating the brain. Benefits of Hand Clapping in Children... Hand clapping has benefits in adult brains and in children’s development. This latter may be one of the more prominent areas of benefit. Motor planning is one of the skills children must learn in order to successfully accomplish everyday tasks such as getting dressed, engaging in games with others, and writing. In motor planning, a child has to come up with a task, figure out how to complete it, and then do the physical actions to accomplish the task. Games that involve hand clapping also use motor planning. Motor movements involved in clapping must be practiced over and over in order for them to become automatic. Clapping games help children practice crossing the midline of their bodies. This is an imaginary line that bisects the body. Crossing it is important in the development of handedness and brain connectedness. Learning to place things in sequence is an important developmental task for children, also. This helps them in learning other skills, especially in academics. Clapping games help children learn to sequence in a playful atmosphere. Many of the clapping games require children to tell a story in sequence as they clap. The coordination of the two sides of our bodies is a fundamental skill needed in many aspects of daily living and learning. Opening a bottle, putting on earrings, driving a manual car, and tying shoes require coordination of both sides of the body. Clapping games are very good at helping children learn this necessary skill. They require the use of both sides of the body over and over. Clapping games also help children learn visual tracking. This is the ability to use the eyes to follow objects without moving the entire head to do so. This skill is necessary for good reading skills to develop. Developing rhythm and beat skills are necessary for children to later learn how to dance, improve coordination, learn some gross motor games, and play an instrument. Clapping games are an excellent way to learn rhythm and beat. Improved socialization is another benefit from clapping games. Many of these games involve more than one child, making the opportunities for socialization great. Often, one of the children involved in the games will be a bit more advanced than the other. This allows those who are slower to learn from the more advanced one. This also allows for peer coaching, which can be a wonderful tool for children who have difficulties. And the clapping games don’t appear to be “learning” in the strictest sense of the word; they are, rather, play time. These clapping games can give children a developmental edge that helps them avoid childhood stressors and sets them up for a bright future. Conclusion:Overall, clapping appears to work like acupressure or acupuncture. It seems to help the energy move through the body and helps the brain make new connections. It improves focus, reduces tension, and may have an effect similar to that which reduces pain in cancer patients. It also has many developmental benefits for children. It’s an easy and fun way to take care of your brain. Click the link on my signature for the more health tips.. . cc:lalasticlala Cc:dominique, sissy 3

Hmmm!!! Peps gone are the days were women are being blamed for not having kids in a relationship . Believe it or not male infertility is seriously on the rise. According to a recent article by Mr sunny.o. Abarikwu there has been a decline in the semen quality of young healthy men worldwide with similar findings being reported in Nigeria. The rate of male infertility currently was put at 11% according to his article. Unfortunately, the true figure could be higher because Nigerian gynecologists frequently report that infertility cases constitute between 60% and 70% of their consultation in tertiary health institutions . I personally in the past two years have seen cases of not just low sperm count ie oligospermia but Azospermia lack of sperm cells in the semen. I have seen the devastating effect this conditions can affect a man which brings me to a case I'm currently handling . Three months ago before I even though of blogging , i was attending to my customers in the evening . It's usually busy i don't even have enough time for proper consultation because of how impatient the next patient can be...i noticed a young woman she should be in her late twenties or early thirties, average height , dark in complexion with a worried look. She held on to a bag . I thought she was a medical representative of one pharmaceutical company ...i was already saying to myself "Pls I can't attend to any company representative now, I'm so busy that I don't even have time for myself" ...i wanted to discharge her so as not to waste her time, interrupted my consultation and asked her politely ... "Hello ma, pls can i help you, what do you want?" her response " ma I want to see you privately, I was directed by my neighbor who you assisted with her ovulation period and now she is pregnant " I was like " oh ok give me a second I'm almost done" I rounded up with my consultation and beckoned on her to come to my office ...she got to my office,I offered her a sit and she started her story.... "Ma I have been married for the past 6 years I got married at 24 and I am 30....i have not been able to conceive.. .I have done all sort of medical tests ...taken fertility drugs yet to no avail. Every medical test result says im ok....why can't I conceive.. .she reached out to her bag and brought out heaps of finished drugs....i screamed because they were quite much.... I asked her certain personal questions ranging from her period count, ovulation, abortion records,STI's and STD infections ....fortunately she was a virgin before she got married . I then asked what about your husband, has he gone for any medical test...she replied "Ma, honestly that has been my greatest challenge ... I have been pleading with him to follow me for medical checkup .. ..he refuses...anytime he finally agrees due to pressure from friends and family , he always has a way of missing the appointment with one excuse or the other....click my signature for the complete gist

Kampack:Lol oga please take it easy.... pharmacists are trying even in an uncondusive environment. |
Hmm!!! I like the facts that Nigerians are becoming health conscious ...i mean it's like everyone is a doctor or pharmacist. Before patients comes to the pharmacy, he/she must have read through about his ailment ..thanks to Google and Wikipedia .....As medical practitioners, It keeps us on our toes and ensures we are knowledgeable so we would not be seen as dummies... During the week, a man came to get some medications that included an antibiotics for his child age 2... he handed the prescription to me and I dispersed the drugs.....the antibiotics was about to expire in two months time....he then checked the expiry date and refused to buy it...he was like "madam this drug was manufactured 2016, and it's expiring in two months time....pls I need the new batch that was manufactured recently...i tried to explain to him that this is the current batch available in the market, it's even scarce .....all my explanation fell on deaf ears as he vehemently refused...he collected the other drugs and left... Now I have had the experience over and over again...i appreciate the fact that everyone is taking responsibility for their health by checking and cross checking production and expiration dates of product....thanks to late Pharm Dora Akunyili.....i really don't blame them....I mean "this is Nigeria "...if you know, you know... But they are facts everyone should know about close to expired or expired drugs...this are facts from reputable research institutions... Many medications are very expensive and people hate to waste them. To avoid a costly visit to the doctor for a new prescription, many people have to consume expired drugs. Physicians and pharmaceutical companies, because of legal restrictions and liability concerns, will not sanction such use and may not even comment on the safety or effectiveness of using their products beyond the date on the label. What does Expiration Date mean? The expiration date, required by law in the United States, beginning in 1979, indicated the date the manufacturer guarantees the full potency and safety of the drug. At the time of the medication expiry date, the drug must be at least 90% of the original potency under proper storage conditions. The expiration date does not indicate a point when a medication loses potency and is no longer effective or becomes harmful. In general, drugs expiration date is 2-5 years from production date. FDA regulations do not require manufacturers to determine actual long-term drug potency and stability. For example, if a company chooses a three year expiration date, it does not have to test beyond that for prolonged effectiveness. 2. Potency and Efficacy. Medication's potency gradually decreases starting from the moment of its manufacture. This process is not in anyway spontaneous after the expiry date. Expired drugs have not necessarily lost their potency and efficacy. The expiration date is only an assurance that the labeled potency will last at least until that date. Ongoing research[3]shows that stored under optimal conditions, many drugs retain 90% of their potency for at least five years after the labeled expiration date, and sometimes longer. Even 10 years after the expiration date many pharmaceuticals retain a significant amount of their original potency. Important note:Solid dosage forms, such as tablets and capsules, are most stable past their expiration date. Drugs that exist in solution or as a reconstituted suspension may not have the required potency if used when outdated. Click my signature for more info...

Yep!! The long holiday is here again...throughout last week, the demand for appetite stimulants was quite high as kids were returning from boarding houses. As a mother, i know how frustrating it is when kids lose appetite for food , i tell you very frustrating cos lots of mothers were worried about the decrease in appetite in their toddlers ...According to some mothers, their kids used to have healthy appetite but they are currently witnessing what is called an Appetite slump . It is known that poor appetite is the leading cause of malnutrition in children, every child passes through this phase at a point in their lives, others make a quick recovery and others it almost becomes permanent . If this conditions is not arrested, it can lead to a lot of health problems in children which can even affect them in their adulthood. Children in this article refer to kids from infancy to 12 years of age....before we talk about enhancing kids appetite naturally , what are the causes of poor appetite in children : Illness: An underlying medical condition can be behind your child's sudden loss of appetite .when you've tried all you can and the poor appetite still persists, then you need to see a doctor immediately so that he will diagnose the cause and when the root cause is treated, appetite is usually restored. Illness could be sore throat, high temperature , rashes, flu and restlessness. Intake of other fluids and snack in-between meals: when your child takes lots of fluids other than water and snacks in between meals, it will affect their intake of proper foods and this habits should be discouraged. Also giving babies that are still breastfeeding excess water and fruit juice fills up their stomach ...this can make them quickly feel full, this will lower their appetite and make them resistant to food. Slow rate of growth: changes in the rate of growth can affects a child's appetite and this is completely normal. A child grows rapidly during the first year but after that, the rate of growth slows down and they usually eat less food during this period. Teething :The growth of teeth in babies can cause loss of appetite due to the pain and discomfort caused by the tearing of the guns. You can relieve the pain by giving your baby teething toys to chew on. Breastfeeding or bottle feeding can increase the pain and disrupt appetite , so you should try feeding from a cup and feed them cold foods like yoghurt and mashed fruits. Other factors that causes loss of appetite includes Stress,Viral and Bacterial infections, Depression, Food intolerance ,Anemia:This is another possible cause for a child's poor apetite, if the child looks weaker, tired and irritable than others it could be a sign of Anemia. This condition requires urgent medical attention as it could interfere with the child's performance, growth and development . Sore throat Intestinal worms: Worms in the intestine can cause poor appetite in children. They enter the digestive systems and live there as parasites, from there they cause a lot of digestive problems and disorders. They also cause dysentery, Intestinal bleeding and loss of appetite . De-worming your child will help and this should be done regularly like every three months. Zinc deficiency: A reduced level of Zinc in the body leads to poor appetite ,digestive problems and poor absorption of good.Add rich sources of Zinc to your child's meals like chicken, wheat bran, cashew nut and pumpkin seeds. The above factors are the few causes of loss of appetite in children now how do we increase appetite naturally Make breakfast compulsory: Give them a good and healthy breakfast everyday, this will increase their appetite and boost their metabolism after the night fast and it will also get the body ready for the day's work. Making breakfast compulsory in your home is a tried and tested formulae that boosts healthy eating in kids and this habits follows them in adulthood . Papaya :This fruit is a natural appetite stimulant; it increases appetite in kids and helps them gain weight. It is also rich in vitamins A, C and E which help in improving appetite. Give them homemade papaya juice and this is safe for kids at age 7 months and above. Give children a lot of Basil: This herb is effective in boosting appetite and improving digestion; it is safe to use for babies above 8months. Sweet potatoes : This increases appetite in children and helps them gain weight in a healthy manner. They are also rich in dietary fibres and this food is one of the best weight gain foods for babies. You can feed babies with sweet potatoes from six months of age and above. Boil it till soft then mesh and serve with a sauce of your choice. For kids under age one, do not add salt or sugar. Take water before meals:Kids should have water first thing in the morning when they wake up, even before milk; they should also be given water 30 minutes before meals, and this will boost their appetite. Cinnamon:Cinnamon can increase appetite in babies, toddlers and children effectively; it can even increase appetite in adult, it is rich in hydoxychalcone which increases appetite. It is safe for babies of 7 months old and above. Add cinnamon powder to their meals, porridge and drinks. Feed them every two hours:Children who fuss over food because they are not too hungry should be given food every couple of hours; this will boost their digestive system enough to feel hungry. You can do this in the form of snacks; replace snacks with healthy meals and give it to them every two hours. Instead of a cookie, you can give them a sandwich; instead of chips, give them muesli or cereal. These healthy replacement will boost your child’s appetite. Don't force children to eat: This will make them resent food the more , let them chose the quantity they can finish per time. Make meal time fun and avoid distractions . Ginger: This herb is powerful in increasing appetite in everyone including toddlers and children ; it is one of the best appetite enhancing foods. Crush ginger and extract the juice. Add the extract to their drinks or good. This herb is safe for kids above one year of age... Peanuts:Peanuts are effective in boosting appetite; except your child has allergies to peanut, give him/her fried peanuts regularly to boost appetite and build the body due to its rich content of protein. You can also give your child peanut butter if he/she doesn’t have an allergy to it. Please note that peanuts should not be given to a child less than one year of age and peanuts also have rich content of zinc. Reduce milk and dairy products :Too much milk is behind the cause for low appetite in many children; too much of this kills their appetite for the next meal; replace milk and milk products with yogurt, cream and cottage cheese. Thyme: This is effective in boosting appetite in babies and kids, add it in rice and other meals.. Offer food in little quantity: For those children with poor appetite that are irritated at the very sight of food; offering them their favourite food will help to initially kick start their metabolism and keep it running, healthy foods can follow when they start accepting the very idea of eating. Carrot juice: carrot is effective in stimulating the appetite ,give your kids a half glass of carrot juice 30minutes before meal to increase hunger. What you should know and do:As earlier mentioned; the eating habit your children develop as toddlers can determine their eating habit and this can affect them for the rest of their lives. This is because poor eating habits are hard to break; so as a parent, it is your responsibility to correct poor eating patterns and habits in children. Make sure your children eat in a healthy and positive atmosphere; makes sure the foods are always coloured with plenty fruits and vegetables this will help them develop healthy attitudes about food and themselves. Eating together as a family is one way to help your children develop healthy atitude and mindsets about food. When to seek medical Seek medical help when:You think an underlying medical condition is responsible You suspect anemia If your child throws up after every meal If your child is suffering from diarrhea or fever or both If your child has not gained weight in the last six months You notice your child is losing weight without apparent reason You think your child is depressed You can meet a doctor to adjust or change your child medications if it has poor apetite as a side effect.. Aproko means gossip (for our international readers)... Truth is Every Entrepreneur will agree with me that getting an effective employee is quite challenging....some employees have this lackadaisical attitude when it comes to their job..."after all no be my papa work, I can't kill my self, all I know is end of the month I will collect my salary...its really sad and disheartening that we really do not have dignity in Labour ...its indeed very sad...Anyways that story for another day ,I don't know about other retail pharmacists, but do you notice you have some very loyal neighbours and customers who are ever so quick in report every form of gross indiscipline and inappropriate behaviours by your staff when ever you are not around? Despite having cctv cameras they always look out when your staff misbehave outside the premise....well i have oh!!! plenty sef...they seem to know more than me ,all the latest gist and happenings in the coomunity not only do they know the latest gist, they are always ready to watch your back and defend your practise around. Don't blame them though having been here for more than eight years from a humble beginning in a small shop 2010 till 2015 with our recent expansion....i have grown with the community and I have come to accept that more people know me than i realised....i am somebody that keeps to myself though I'm quite friendly with neighbours and I love my privacy, still they always have a way of getting information about my staff members ...and it really amazes me..... I recently placed a staff on suspension, found out she was pilfering and misbehaving with a married man ....how did I know ..thanks to madam phileomina (not real name) my neighbour. Even with my computer system , whenever I took physical stock count we will experience shortage with the drugs and all..when I confront my staff, they will tie it to the excess money not accounted for during sales..... So I came to the office late on Tuesdays last week as I went to the market for some stocking of drugs and sundries. Madam phileomina beckoned on me that when I am well settled ,she will like to see me...i ask "hope no problem she said no.... About 45minutes later, I signalled her to come that I'm done.....she then came into the pharmacy . I took her to my office as she said it was a private discussion ...she then started her gist.. "Madam Chidinma you know we are sister's (ie both igbos) ...i know how hardworking you are and how over the years you tend to keep a good reputation ..i answered yes she then continued .."please talk to you sales assistant ..when ever you ain't around , outside the pharmacy , they tend to behave unethically it's either, they are rude to customers or they over charge customers for products being bought and dating other peoples husband... I'm like what madam Phileomina who please!!! Madam phileomina responded: it's Rita (not real name) she is dating lawyer (lawyer is a good and old customer of the pharmacy who helps us with change) lawyer's wife complains that Rita sends her husband inappropriate Whatapp messages and she lawyer's wife is becoming uncomfortable about it, infact she wanted to come to the pharmacy and embarrass Rita but because you were not around, she didn't want to take laws into her hands... Madam phileomina had to console lawyers wife that she would report the matter to me as she knows I'm not aware... I was shocked to say the least...and angry at the same time which kan scandal be this... !!! As a rule I dont allow any sales assistant give out her personal number to customers ....if a patient wants a contact number to get in touch with the pharmacy, we have an office number. I called on Rita as she's the oldest staff, she has worked with me for over seven years...i confronted her with the information I received right in front of Mrs phileomina , she agreed about the said messages which were not scandalous but denied that she's dating lawyer. It's usually prayers and motivational quotes and she sends it to all her contacts on Whatapp .... she also made certain statement " ma even if I want to date a man not lawyer with his mouth odour, I was like Rita don't say that please! lawyer is some ones husband, Rita responded ,Aunty pls I'm somebody's wife...what if my husband hears this gist what will he say, Rita then continued madam Phileomina gossips too much , Ma you need to hear what she says about you...then lawyers wife came into the pharmacy when she sighted my car ... In my presence, lawyer's wife, mrs philomina and Rita started a heated argument, the situation almost became messy ..i had to quickly invite the police .I told Rita to bring her phone, she did and I actually confirmed the text messages that they were actually not scandalous....mrs phileomina also confirmed it. I guess lawyers wife had insecurity issues and extremely possessive .....you needed to have seen the embarrassment on Mrs phileomina's face when the whatsapp message wasnt as scandalous as she thought but she kept insisting that Rita and lawyer were having an affair . I began to wonder what's is this woman's business . She tends to know every body's gist and unfortunately some of this gists are true...No matter how you try to avoid her, she knows what goes on in the pharmacy much more than me set.. ..for example three months ago my pregnant sales assistant had to leave due to her pregnancy . Madam phileomina told me that pregnancy belongs to my neighbor the electrician when I confronted my sales assistant , she denied ...after she left assist left for her maternity found out it was true...they are even married sef...right under my nose..i did not even know about it. Anyways , I had to place Rita on one week suspension for breaking the rules of the pharmacy .....since she is quite popular around the neighborhood , some customers came and pleaded on her behalf, some also came and confessed about certain behaviours she displays but I should forgive her "as the angel you know is better than the devil you dont know" they knew all this character's but they don't want to be responsible for someone's job loss... Taking my time thinking seriously about it...cos in all fairness, she has served me faithfully.... but in all even though they are disadvantages I honestly like the fact that the community where I practise genuinely looks out for me....i guess I'm family... !!!So this week was I and my twin birthday...a lot of peps didn't know I'm twin...and they were like "Chidinma...pls I want to give birth to twins" I don't know what my mum did oh...but I know my mum's ancestral line...they have twins. So I guess ours is hereditary ....Gone are the days when women experience multiple birth due to heritage..according to scientists, every woman has the tendency of multiple birth ....you can have twins naturally by boosting your ovulation ie hyper ovulation either thru diets or certain hormonal drugs. I did a little research on it...but first how does giving birth to twins happen... How do twins happen? If you are keen to increase your chances of conceiving two babies then it’s important to understand how twins are made. There are two types of twins; identical and non-identical. Identical or monozygotic twins are formed when one egg is fertilized by one sperm which then divides into two separate embryos. Each shares exactly the same genetic components and identical genetic structures. Identical twins also share a placenta. Non-identical or dizygotic twins form from two separate eggs being fertilised by two separate sperm. These twins are their own unique little individuals and share no more genetic composition than siblings with the same parents. Each baby in a non-identical twin pair will have its own placenta. Another name for non-identical twins is fraternal; the other name for identical twins is non-fraternal. What about twins in families? Twins do run in families. But the genetic predisposition for having twins only applies to the mother. It is her family history which influences the chances of her having hyper ovulation. Any woman can have identical twins and family history does not play a role with these. What will help boost my chances of having twins? Being older rather than younger helps. It seems to be a twist of nature that just before a woman enters peri-menopause, her ovaries start releasing more than one egg each month. This “fertility spike” is also influenced by a surge of oestrogen. Fertility research has proven that twin pregnancies are much more common in women who are over 35 years. But this only applies to non-identical twins. Have fertility assistance such as in vitro fertilisation or take fertility drugs. These stimulate the ovaries to support more than one ovarian follicle each month towards maturity. The result is that more than one egg is released. Pick your own genetics carefully! Though we all know this is impossible. But if you come from a family where non-identical twins are common then your family history and genetic endowment means that you’ve got a greater chance of having them yourself. But identical twins can occur in any family. Be of African/American heritage. Women from this ethnic background have a distinctly higher rate of twin pregnancies. Having been pregnant before. Women who have previously had a baby or two have a higher chance of conceiving with twins. Have a big family. This theory is based on pure maths; the more times you conceive the greater the likelihood of conceiving more than one baby. Get pregnant while you are on the pill. Difficult as this can be overall, there is a higher incidence of women conceiving with twins when they are on oral contraceptives. Try to conceive straight after you have stopped taking the pill. The theory is that for the first couple of cycles the woman’s body is going through a hormonal readjustment phase. Already have a set of twins. Because the likelihood of conceiving with twins again is higher in women who’ve already had them. Be heavier rather than lighter so that you’ve got a higher body mass index (BMI). Some researchers claim that a woman with a BMI of greater than 30 boosts her chances. But considering a healthy range during the fertile years is 20-25 and 30 would put you into the overweight/obese category then this is not a healthy recommendation. Taller women tend to conceive more twins. But there is nothing you can do about your height, other than blame our parents! Take a folic acid supplement before you conceive. The general recommendation for women who are planning to conceive is to start taking folic acid supplements one month before conception. Encourage your partner to eat some oysters. The urban myth about oysters being an aphrodisiac is not entirely without basis. Oysters are high in zinc and this helps with sperm production. The more healthy and mobile his sperm are, the greater the likelihood of being able to fertilise an egg or two. If he’s keen to take supplements, the recommendation for men in their fertile years is 14mg/day. Green leafy vegetables, cereals, bread, seeds and wheat germ are all excellent sources of zinc. Be a twin yourself. Mothers who are twins are more likely to have twin babies. There is no influence on the male partner’s side, only the mother’s. But it does seem that fathers may pass the twin gene onto their daughters for their future conception possibilities. Eat more yams/sweet potatoes. It is a fact that more women conceive with twins who live in areas where yams are a major component of their diet. It seems that a naturally occurring chemical component of the yams helps to support ovarian function. Keep breastfeeding your older baby or toddler. Women who are producing prolactin and breastfeeding are more likely to conceive with twins. Though some women do not resume regular ovulation and menstrual cycles for the entire time they are breastfeeding; this is very individual.

readers! ! You been reading about multiple birth...now it's of a known fact that certain kinds of food influences hyperovulation in women which results to multiple birth...Ever since I started blogging, I research and read much more...was going thru a research with regards multiple birth because there's been an increase lately in the desire by women to experience multiple birth.... Fam, could you believe that a small farming community known as Igbo-or a is known as the twins headquarters in the world and is located in Nigeria . This community has the highest incidence of multiple birth . It is curious but little known fact that the rate of twin birth in West Africa is about four times higher than the rest of the world...it is said that each family in that community has at least a set of twins and three sets of twins were born in every 19births. According to fertility experts, the reason for the high incidence of twins in this community is as a result of their diet. It could lie in the consumption of certain kinds of yam and vegetables ... So there you have it...okra leave also known as Ilasa and igangan are diets used by the Igbo-ora natives....Igangan contains natural phytoestrogens which is thought to stimulates a woman's ovaries to release eggs from each side. Regular intake of wild yam in your diet , helps in fertility challenge in women. It is said to be used for those kind of miscarriage that has to do with spasm.... Click my signature to watch how Ilasa soup is been prepared...

While in pharmacy school, I think my third year or so can't really remember. We were taught about Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR). Prior to that , I lost a dear friend of mine her name was Nma, she was a student of the university of Calabar..According to stories, she had malaria and bought Fansidar...immediately she took the drug, she started reacting to it...her skin had blisters and ruptured, she was looking like a burnt patient...she couldn't survive it...we all thought it was a spiritual attack...you know Nigerians can spiritualize every thing ....Not until I was taught in pharmacy school about Adr example Steven Johnson's syndrome ...that I knew drugs can actually cause an unexpected and dangerous reaction which can result to death... All through my career as a pharmacist, I always pray never to have such experience...i personally ensure I ask questions about the history of drug reactions from my patient before I administer any medication...i guess Wednesday wasn't my lucky day. So last week Wednesday, the pharmacy is usually busy in the evenings....i really don't like checking patients vital signs like sugar level, blood pressure in the evening due to the rush hour...but an elderly patient came , looking so desperate and sickly.....with his explanations,it was obvious that his blood pressure was high...i just had to check his vitals signs to be sure before any further diagnosis ....while I was attending to the elderly patient, a young man came into the pharmacy to get a pain relieving drug...he wanted an effective one...though he had used one before and according to him, it was effective unfortunately he couldn't remember the brand...he wanted that exact one...our sales assistant then offered him another brand since he could not remember the one he was used to and told him how he should administer it...assuring him that he will get the same result.. he left... On Thursday morning, while I was preparing for work, I got a call from the sales assistant ...according to her, the man and his people came to the office with some police officers to arrest her....he reacted seriously to the drugs...according to him,he fainted, his body was stiff and his eyes rolled back...he felt his soul leaving his body...his wife and brothers rushed him to the nearby clinic where the doctors quickly attended to him by administrating drips to neutralise the effect...the products he reacted to was a combination of paracetamol and diclofenac 50mg...after he was relieved, he reported the case to the police saying we were sent to kill him. I had to calm them down thru the phone and rushed to the office.... On getting there, after listening to his side of the story, I educated them about ADR.. since the drug was not an expired drug..there is no case..its was just a drug reaction..thank God it wasn't worst ....i then took it upon myself to take him to the hospital for a thorough medical check up...Ensured he was ok...paid all his medical bills and apologised..... he was grateful.... i came back to the pharmacy ..... breathe a sigh of relief....thank God it wasn't worst than i thought .... So blog visitors, Do you know about ADR (Adverse Drug Reactions) Well, An adverse drug reaction (ADR) is an unwanted or harmful reaction experienced following the administration of a drug or combination of drugs under normal conditions of use and is suspected to be related to the drug. An ADR will usually require the drug to be discontinued or the dose reduced. An adverse event is harm that occurs while a patient is taking a drug, irrespective of whether the drug is suspected to be the cause. A side-effect is any effect caused by a drug other than the intended therapeutic effect, whether beneficial, neutral or harmful. The term ‘side-effect’ is often used interchangeably with A DR.. although the former usually implies an effect less harmful, predictable and may not even require discontinuation of therapy (e.g. ankle oedema with vasodilators). Drug toxicity describes adverse effects of a drug that occur because the dose or plasma concentration has risen above the therapeutic range, either unintentionally or intentionally (drug overdose). Drug abuse is the misuse of recreational or therapeutic drugs that may lead to addiction or dependence, serious physiological injury (such as damage to kidneys, liver, heart), psychological harm (abnormal behavior patterns, hallucinations, memory loss), or death. Drug abuse is the misuse of recreational or therapeutic drugs that may lead to addiction or dependence, serious physiological injury (such as damage to kidneys, liver, heart), psychological harm (abnormal behavior patterns, hallucinations, memory loss), or death. Types of Adverse Drug Reactions ... Dose-related adverse drug reactions represent an exaggeration of the drug's therapeutic effects. For example, a person taking a drug to reduce high blood pressure may feel dizzy or light-headed if the drug reduces blood pressure too much. A person with diabetes may develop weakness, sweating, nausea, and palpitations if insulin or an oral antidiabetic drug reduces the blood sugar level too much. This type of adverse drug reaction is usually predictable but sometimes unavoidable. It may occur if a drug dose is too high overdose reaction, if the person is unusually sensitive to the drug, or if another drug slows the metabolism of the first drug and thus increases its level in the blood Dose-related reactions are usually not serious but are relatively common. Allergic drug reactions are not dose-related but require prior exposure to a drug. Allergic reactions develop when the body's immune system develops an inappropriate reaction to a drug (sometimes referred to as sensitization). After a person is sensitized, later exposures to the drug produce one of several different types of allergic reaction. Sometimes doctors do skin rest to help predict allergic drug reactions. Idiosyncratic adverse drug reactions result from mechanisms that are not currently understood. This type of adverse drug reaction is largely unpredictable. Examples of such adverse drug reactions include rashes, jaundice, anemia, a decrease in the white blood cell count, kidney damage, and nerve injury that may impair vision or hearing. These reactions tend to be more serious but typically occur in a very small number of people. Affected people may have genetic differences in the way their body metabolizes or responds to drugs. Some adverse drug reactions are not related to the drug's therapeutic effect but are usually predictable, because the mechanisms involved are largely understood. For example, stomach irritation and bleeding often occur in people who regularly use aspirin or other non-steroidal anti -inflammatory drugs. The reason is that these drugs reduce the production of prostaglandins, which help protect the digestive tract from stomach acid. When to see the doctor When you’re taking any medicine, it’s important to be aware of changes in your body. Tell your doctor if something uncommon happens. It may be hard to know if an adverse reaction is caused by an illness or by your medicine. Tell your doctor when your symptoms started and whether they are different from other symptoms you have had before. Be sure to remind your doctor of all the medicines you take. Symptoms of adverse drug reactions include: skin rash bruising bleeding swelling dizziness severe nausea and vomiting diarrhea constipation confusion trouble breathing abnormal heartbeat. Contact your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. They likely will have you stop taking the medicine to see if the symptoms go away. The doctor may prescribe another medicine to treat the reaction. If your adverse reaction is severe, you might have to go to a hospital. Never stop taking a medicine on your own; always talk with your doctor first. Common drugs that causes Adverse Drug Reactions Any medication can trigger an allergic reaction . That said, some are more likely to cause these types of problems than others: Antibiotics -- amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin , tetracycline and others Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen Aspirin Sulfa drugs Chemotherapy drugs Monoclonal antibody therapy -- cetuximab, rituximab, and others HIV drugs -- abacavir, nevirapine, and others Insulin Antiseizure drugs -- carbamezapine ,phenytoin, and others Muscle relaxers given by IV -- atracurium, succinylcholine, or vecuronium So peps once you react to the above drugs, or any other drug. Ensure you report to the medical doctor and make sure you don't take the drugs again as the resultant effect maybe fatal.

We don't cut blisters or rather sachets of medications , some patients will come to a pharmacy even the educated ones " madam give me ampiclox beecham Dat pharmacy chick:850 naira for 1 blister, you need to buy 2 a complete dose...no oh I want one cap.. Datpharmacy chick:sir we don't cut this is a pharmacy not a chemist☺. Patient:"but I can't finish all its too much Datpharmacychick:well there is nothing I can do If you are taking any form of medications , ensure you take the complete dose to avoid resistance ...thats why a lot of patients claim that drugs don't work any longer... 2. This post is not to undermine our dear doctors, but doctors makes a shockingly large amount of mistakes/errors that you the patients will never see. Wrong drugs, wrong dosage and wrong directions to top the list. So don't be scared or think the doctor doesn't know his job if we request to speak with the doctor. It's human nature to make mistakes. Pharmacists are there to correct errors in prescription that's our strengths ☺. 3. Our duty as pharmacist is to counsel patients, correct errors in prescriptions, ensure drugs are administered at the right time, correct route of administration, right dosage for a particular ailments and our patients are quite knowledgeable with their medications. 4. Doctors don't really like phone calls from pharmacies nope they really dont . If you are not convinced or comfortable with pharmacist correcting you medications or substituting it or if you want something above what the doctor recommended ....i suggest you call the doctor yourself . 5. Pharmacists have the right not to disperse narcotics or controlled substance when we sense an abuse. "Customer is king" we know, but not when you want to be on a codeine dietby buying 5bts of codeine syrup and tramadol. When we ask you questions , you can't give a convincing answer. No sir!!!we won't sell. You health is of paramount importance to us. 6.Talking on your cell phones is still is and will always be exceedingly inappropriate when we are trying to talk to you. 7. You cannot return medications that didn't work or you don't want. Once it leaves the pharmacy counter, it's yours.. .forever. The only exception that is if an error is made by the pharmacy or manufacturer. We try to keep it to a bare minimum (and then it is destroyed ) Every patient deserves to know that every drug that passes into their hands had only been handled by the manufacturer, the distribution center and the pharmacy . 8. Prices varied from one pharmacy outlet to the other: yes this is a major ish." Madam your drugs are too expensive "I hear this statement everyday ...truth is there are various factors why price varies from one pharmacy outlet to another ..how we source our drugs, location etc...you don't expect a drug that is 1000 in egbeda should be the same at Ikoyi. They need to pay their rent and have other financial responsibilities....We need to breakeven, we are here to serve as well as make profits, it's not a charity organisation. 9. We also have our bad moods. Pharmacists are human too...some days, we have our mood swings and want to be left alone. If you have a friendly pharmacist, and on this particular day he /she isn't their usual self, please be patient and understand. It's really not easy running a retail outlet. The responsibility are enormous from stocking, to stock taking, ensuring our vendors are paid, pharmacy functioning properly , dealing with expired drugs, dealing with patient atitude and bad behavior, also your workers. 10. All patients are important, "I must be your best patient" yes you are. But everyone is attended to fairly,so when you come to the pharmacy wait for your turn to be attended to, preferential treatment are usually not encouraged☺ Thanks for your cooperation Datpharmacychic☺ Click my signature for exciting posts

The numerous loss of lives and tragic events in various parts of the country particularly the berger fire gosh!!!What a terrible way to die and the final blow my neighbor, a fellow pharmacist was laid to rest last Friday.. hmmm never had a lot of emotional stress all in one week...went for her burial at Atan Cemetery..honestly,there is really nothing to life...Never knew how loving and kind she was...with numerous testimonies about her goodwill...i just saw her as a competitor wish I could reverse the hands of time to get to know her better....may her soul rest in perfect peace Amen Inspite of all these happenings there's always a reason to laugh at the pharmacy due to one drama or the other...A RECENT CASE OF EVERYDAY FOR THE THEIF, ONE DAY FOR THE OWNER We offer a drive through service to a set of our regular customers..we already know what they want so they will just park in front of the pharmacy and one of the sales assistant will attend to them....There is this particular customer Mr Collins(not his real name) he comes to buy condoms and he buys them in bulk. According to him it's his method of family planning as he has decided to take his destiny into his own hands, he does not want to be deceived anymore by his wife. I was impressed because it is of a known fact that most men are allergic to condoms... So one Friday as usual, he parked in front of the pharmacy...unfortunately for him, we were all busy attending to customers in the pharmacy so Mr Collins had to wait for one of our sales assistant to attend to him...while he was waiting, I noticed a woman (let use Mrs Anne) was about entering the pharmacy ,saw his car, while walking towards it she was talking in a loud voice "Nna you are here...i have been trying to call you, but your number is switched off" I didn't hear the rest of the conversation as she approached Mr Collins car. The sales assistant went out to deliver his condoms wrapped in a black nylon bag...i don't know what transpired between Mr Collins and Mrs Anne...all I knew Mrs Anne started yelling "You will meet me at home useless man, is this the cough syrup you came to buy Collins.. .answer me na...so this is what you do...you come to the area on time...switch off your phone...spend money on small small girls...then come home claiming you are attending one meeting or the other...you will meet me at home stupid man" Aha people started gathering..."madam please calm down!!! Trust Nigerians and their aproko behavior .. Mrs Anne now came into the pharmacy in order to avoid further embarrassment ....she then started yelling and asking dat pharmacy chick funny questions ( I don't know how she wants me to answer her to put petrol into an already existing fire) she continued yelling " my husband is very useless.. please ma, you are a woman ( referring to me) how often does he buy those condoms because we don't use condoms i was shocked ( family planning indeed)...that is my husband Every time he claims he doesn't have money yet he bleeps around...infact I'm tired of the marriage..he is so irresponsible ..i'm practically the one that fends for the family...he does not contribute a dime to the family upkeep ...always claiming business is dull....i responded "see my sister, man matter dem no dey put am for head otherwise you will just die and leave your children behind for another woman...just leave him alone and face your life, build yourself...live for your children....when he is tired of frolicking around he will crawl back home (Abi I can't say more than that ). I took Mrs Anne to my office she shed a tear or two...i just made sure she was calm before she left the pharmacy ... Apparently according to the sales assistant, Mr Collins lied to Mrs Anne that he came to buy cough syrup as he was having minor throat irritation....on getting to the car, the wife Mrs Anne wanted to check the brand he bought but alias it was 2 rolls of condoms choi...when Mr Collins could not hear the yelling and embarrassment from his wife, he drove off... After she left I sat down...nawa for some men oh !! even if you want to play away match must it be within your neighborhood sorry some men are so dumb not that I'm in support but this things do happen.....i can only imagine the royal rumble wrestling that will happen at home...i can't but imagine oga di tough..... Thank God it's Friday yay .....its another weekend.....and Yes,Weekend isn't complete without our Sunday rice...but for those looking for a healthier replacement try Bulgar Wheat . Bulgur wheat, sometimes also called cracked wheat, is a lesser-known type of whole wheat durum grain. Compared to refined carbohydrate foods made with enriched or refined wheat, bulgur wheat is a much better source of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Bulgur is low in fat, high in minerals like manganese, magnesium and iron, plus it’s a good source of plant-based protein. On top of this, bulgur wheat provides a very good dose of the dietary fiber you need for digestive and heart health — over 25 percent of your daily needs in every one-cup serving! Epidemiological studies find that whole-grain intake can be protective against health conditions like cancer, heart disease, digestive disorders, diabetes and obesity, which suggests that bulgur wheat can be a part of a healing diet. (1) In addition to vitamins and minerals, whole grains supply important plant-based phytonutrients that lower inflammation and prevent free radical damage. These include compounds such as phytoestrogens like lignans, plant stanols and plant sterols. Difference between Bulgar wheat and other wheat flour The difference between bulgur and most types of wheat flours used in many packaged products is that bulgur hasn’t been stripped (or “refined) of its bran and germ, which are where many of the nutrients are actually stored within a whole grain. Bulgur is usually sold “parboiled,” which means a very small amount of the grain’s bran is partially removed, but it’s still considered a whole grain by the USDA and the Whole Grains Council. This results in a wheat product that’s high in carbohydrates but low in fiber and nutrients. In fact, usually over half of the vitamins — such as thiamine, niacin, vitamin E, phosphorus, iron and folate — are lost during processing. Although some are added back into wheat products (a process known as “enriching”), they’re synthetic nutrients and not equivalent in quantity or quality to the kinds naturally present in unprocessed whole grains. Even though most people use bulgur wheat and cracked wheat interchangeably, they’re slightly different. Cracked wheat is crushed wheat grain that hasn’t been parboiled. Both types are whole grains and are very similar in terms of the nutrients and fiber they provide, however. Nutrition Facts A one-cup serving of cooked bulgur wheat has about: (3) 151 calories 8 grams of fiber 6 grams protein 0.5 grams fat 1 milligram manganese (55 percent) 58 milligrams magnesium (15 percent) 7 milligrams iron (10 percent) 8 milligrams niacin (9 percent) 0.2 milligrams vitamin B6 (8 percent) One important thing to clarify about bulgur wheat is that it does contain gluten, as all wheat-containing foods do. Gluten — the protein found naturally in all wheat, rye and barley products — can cause digestive issues for many people, especially if they have a compromised digestive system to begin with or poor gut health.
