WizardOfNG: Good post and utterance from a progressive and well-meaning Nigerian. Very different to the post of the nuisances above yours.
Sure that is always a worry but we have never had a decent culture of proper collection of taxes from those who can and should pay it.
I feel we should begin from that point at least and then play our part challenging Government to spend what is collected judiciously.
What we have now is condemnable i.e a situation where tax collection is lax and virtually non-existent because Government is too focused on oil income to care about other legitimate avenues of raising money to use developing Nigeria. The principle of collecting tax efficiently is sacrosanct to all serious nations of the world.
A resource rich Nigeria has no business taxing citizens up to 25 percent of their income in a poverty capital of the world. That person u want to tax 25 percent of his income most likely has parents, siblings and friends who are poor and constantly depend n him of survival. That same person u want to tax 25 percent has fuel to buy for generator to generate electricity or install expensive solar, he has water to dig to generate water to use, he has to buy expensive water botttle to drink, he has expensive health care to care for for him self and those who rely on him. He has wack education to deal with or pay through the nose to get quality education. Nigeria has resource, money, fund generated from VAT alone is huge. The problem Nigeria has is corruption and tribalism based system. With tribalism based system, no body will be able to challenging the politicians because everything is seen in the eyes of tribalism. Protest wont work. Fuel subsizy was removed, allow Nigerians see the benefit of that, provide Nigerians with stable electricity, ensure free and fair election, decentralize the country so states can compete well, then introduce this type of tax, Nigerians will gladly pay. For now, all money goes into funding the lifestyle of politicians, their families and side chicks. Pls, we wont pay. Just 4 years of service, politicians are taken care of for life. WTF! If u dont blokc corruption, tax money will waste. We have a very useless country where tribalism has finished us. As for me, I wont. I will use every legal means to stay awy from this until Nigeria starts fixing core issues I listed above. If I cant find my way around it, I leave the country and pay tax to a country that works well. |

Burob: Please go & help yourself, instead of looking 👀 for excuses. Hahaha Helped him self how ? Govt is taking money from his sweat but has not provided him 24/7 electricity and has stopped subsidy for electricity. Govt has stopped subsidy for fuel so he has to buy expensive fuel to power his generators since there is no light. Govt has not given him water, he has to dig bore hole. Govt didn't give him quality healthcare, he has to pay through the nose to get quality healthcare. Govt has not provided him with security, he has to pay Ransom to kidnapers or fly to avoid being kidnapped. So, what exactly is he gaining while govt takes tax from him, lots of VAT, bank charges, income tax, our resources, etc. All of U who defend these beasts who milk us , one day na one day. |

motymop: i have a first hand experience on how they do it
if you are using a toll for instance, you dont pay cash, you use your phone and dail a code to pay, as you pass the toll, they will issue you the receipt.
They are actually very advanced when it comes to collecting tax.
every damn thing is taxed in that country. They dont have oil. They dont have abandunt resources. We have endlesss list of abundant resources. Our problem is wacky centralized system of govt that has made the sub states useless. No matter how much Nigeria makes, if Nigeria fails to fix wacky electoral system, over centralized system, extreme corruption which all boils down to wacky political system because no president will try those who will help him rig election. If we dont fix these things and control our population, if u like pay tax from now till end of next year, it wont make any changes. It does not stop governors from looting the money. We were told that after subsidy removal, we will enjoy, how far, has anything changed? No, has health care gotten better? No, how aboyt our universities, do they now look like South African universities? No. How far our emergency services, are they now working? No. How security gotten better? No! Sometimes, i feel blacks were designed to be lesser beings. If u dont fix the structural and root cause of ur problems, u cant make any progress. Nigeria can work if we do these things: First, fix political structure and allow states to make their own money and spend it in their states. States will learn to be competitive. No need to spoon feed anyone. Everyone hustle and harness the resources found in ur domain. 2: This will reudce the over I must be president and enable us fix electoral system which will help elect more credible and people oriented people. 3. The above will help reduce cost of running govt. The current system over pamper politicians. Damn, those guys are super rich. Maybe richer than Musk if we dont know. Naija politcians are swimming in free money. 4. If we decentralize our system, people will not weaponize population. This will enable regions and state only pursue efficient population systems. 5: Ban religion in schools, open and public places. Let build STEM Focused society. 6. Digitalize the public contract sytem, salary system, open the damn thing, work on the packages of politicians. Let money paid for contracts be used for the contract. 7. Cut down on population growth. These things will get Nigeria working within 2 years. No be by taxing me 30 percent of my income. |

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx At least Americans dont buy to power generator. They dont need to install expensive solar. Let me give u my day to day hustle: I have gen for my two busineses. I had two gen for my apartments. I had to install 5kva sola to power my apartments and u know how much that cost, right? I had to buy fuel for my two businesses, fuel my car. That is a great burden. U take tax from me, yet I had to dig bore hole, I had to fuel generator, i dont have stable electricity except i either install expensive solar system or fuel generator, I had to deal with insecurity by paying for estate security, I dont have any health care benefits, I had to sort that out my self. So, I ask, what exactly is the tax for? The roads are bad for my car. I struggle while driving as pot holes are so normal everywhere in Nigeria. So, the billions are for politicians to create mouth watering packages for them selves? |

how does your response correlate with the rubbish you stated in your mention? You said aside from Lagos the rest of Yoruba state is a ghost town and now I just cured your ignorance and explained to you that aside from Lagos l, Ogun is a thriving state with economic activities taking place and dangote is also about to open a sea port in Ogun and also oyo is a commercial state with economic activities taking place and I proved that with a stats that clearly shows how the economic activities is reflected on the growth of the state making it more viable than your unproductive region. But in Una usual manner you have deflected and talking about poverty and other irrelevant things.
So is there no poverty in Lagos and other developed climes? Just like I stated, aside from Lagos, the rest of Yoruba state are doing far better than your region and that’s evident in the trend of migration from east and other part of Nigeria to Lagos and other part of yorubaland and if you are in doubt, take a trip to Ibadan and see the loads of your migrants blodas, if it was ghost town like you stated then why are you economic migrants migrating to the place?
You lot just come online and make a blanket statement without facts and when you are being hit with fact you deflect and start with your incoherent gibberish Every dam state in Nigeria has economic activities. Are u ready for a call? Make I school u. I can see u are coming from the state of tribalism whgich is very common in this local forum. No wonder it has failed to go global enough. I said what I said because the way Nigeria is structured, the entire regions are not growing. Which mumu activitioes are u talking about? Compared to the population of these regions in Nigeria, the so called activities cant even be felt, no wonder hunger is so high and nothing looks like working. I dont know why some of u think everyone here is a local champion. Oga,, No region In nigeria is working. From A to Z. The country is poorly structured. |

indeed, the rest of Sw is ghost town and Ogun state is the most industrialised state in Nigeria boasting of economic activities while oyo state just the size of your unproductive region is far more developed and more economically viable than your 5plot of Potopoto land. Go to Ibadan and see the number of your migrate blodas and clear your ignorance…..continue deceiving yourself 😂😂😂 Abeg, oga leave these rubbish numbers. We are talking about real factors that affect humans. Any state has 24/7 electricity? How about emergency service system? How about clean water if not rubbish borehole? How about proper health care service? How is the poverty level? how cordinated are the cities? How cordinated are the markets? What are functioning sporting events there? Make una leave this. This is not Igbo vs Yoruba bullshit. Nigeria is wacky and all states amd all regions are same. Travel go working countries, u go spit on these statistics u provide here. It wasn't criminal intent and I believe it's a civil case unless you can justify the fact he intentionally crashed into you. hence, you are at disadvantage. If he knows his onions, he might even pay you 5000 per month if the case gets to a court.
Your best bet, hold on. Use a bit of force from the police (threat), don't over do the force part as you never can tell the connections he can wield. Just a little at a time. The case has been settled, he paid my full money 650k he paid in 3 months, his truck was kept at the police while he paid my money after i fixed my car. |

Even though Trump has signal over time to meet Putin to end the war but Putin is making it more frustrating with his unrealistic demands. If Trump wants to beget respect he must be an unbending rod like Putin and not contrary to what I read in BBC that he wants to agree with Putin that Ukraine must give up some lands he must state unambiguously and unequivocally that Ukraine will not give an inch of their territories except Crimea that has long gone and if places like the Dombas areas wants to leave, it should be done through referendum under the the supervision of UN. Dey play. I thought war, took control of your lands, lost some soldiers and U want me to give up the lands, like how? It is war, U have lost it, U have lost it. Delay more, we will keep taking more lands. We will lose some fighters but we will keep taking more lands. And any land taken can never be given back or U fight to take it back from me. And Ukraine has been fighting to reclaim lost lands and has not been able even with all the help and money. So, the best thing, end the war, count Ur loses and move on. |

From a young age we were taught to sweep and clean our own house and backyard before going to help out the neighbors. It seems it's the other way round in Nigeria.....charity begins elsewhere It is brain washing, as Nigerians, we have shown that we cant fix our selves, so, we ran away. Forget the sweet name we call it, we have a failed society that has overwheled us. Like, imagine where we dont have a working health care system, educational system is already dead and we cheer the politicians who take their own kids abroad for education, we usually line up to welcome their kids and praise the leaders. We have failed, we cant build a viable society, dont mind us when we make noise, it is completely empty. We dont have any sector that is working in nigeria, I mean, none works. |
